>> “I’m here to help, as long as you want me to. I can’t guarantee a wealth of good advice, but I’ll do my best.”
Even though Lee was still clearly not pleased with this arrangement, Slate did not stop a small smile from crossing his face. “Thank you, Tarin.”
And then came the issue of what to do with their torturer. And the other men. Ah.
Slate stood again, somewhat awkwardly, as he looked at the men Lee had quite effectively incapacitated. “That,” he said quite simply, “is the easy part.” Fortunately, or unfortunately. Unconsciousness lowered the barriers around a normal person’s mind, and made Slate’s work unnervingly easy.
“If you do not mind,” Slate stated mildly, “I will simply do with all of them what I have done with our esteemed acquaintance over there. After that... I can make use of them.” They would be his, then. And, furthermore, they could be his ticket to capturing the woman who had sent them: all he needed to do was have them go back for quite the positive report, and catch her in her victory. All he needed to do was remove their free will on that issue.
“I am nearly done here,” he stated, quite simply. He gave a small shrug. He didn’t mean with the rebuilding, or the village, or this situation: he was nearly done in Colombia. “When we return to New York, I will call you to the Labs for your final decision, in case you change your mind.” He tactfully did not look to Lee while he mentioned this to Tarin. Read: in case a leather-bound Lee was an effective persuader, and Tarin had to withdraw his support. “Until then, please just consider what I have said.”
He wasn’t going to drag them further into his business here. Not when it was nearly finished. After all, what if they did say he was doing evil?
It was better to finish, and let matters speak for themselves. Whichever way they spoke.
