The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Where months ago, Lori would have openly laughed at the idea of leaving behind the lies, now she actually sat quietly and considered it. She was a long time in reaching this point. Firsst discovering she was a mutant and sequestering herself away made her more comfortable with lies than truth. Now? Now she was living a life of convenience. Sure, she;d left the pretense of humanity behind, but the fabrications remained. An easier way to get this done or a fun life story that wasn't her own... did she have to be honest and live a respectable life? Was that still an option?
The best she could do for now was entertain the idea. She would have to weigh her options more before she could settle on something more than maybe.
Augh, but that was so backwards! The 9 to 5 job pushing papers or feeding people vices... there wasn't any challenge there. It was like being a zombie! Punch your clock and do your time and where did it get you? Fired in economic crisis. Passed over for promotion. Not even considered for an intellectual position. As she was now, someone else was always footing the bill. There was no need to work when people willing threw cash at you. And under the right pretenses, they were always willing to pay.
Lori sighed and unhooked her ankles from behind Jacen's back. Her legs were starting to go numb from improper circulation. she rubbed her free hand along a tingly thigh before begrudgingly disentangling herself from Jacen. She stood, but kept her hand on his as she tugged him upward toward his own feet and then tugged back ward to the bed behind them.
It took her a long moment before she realized what Jacen was talking about... Peanut butter? Oh. Food at the trailer. She was almost listening to him before and now she had to stop and think about what he'd actually said. "I don't really like peanut butter and jelly. It's too sweet." She rumpled the sheets and comforter as she found a space under them, still keeping his hand as a hostage. Would he want to be the big spoon or the little spoon? She tried not to think about it too much as she cuddled his hand up to her face.
She responded to his affirmation, equally hushed. "I don't think I have issues with thinking others are better than me..." The idea actually made her smile, a last sparkle of mischief before she closed her eyes. "I think I have problems thinking things the other way around..."
"OK, so scratch peanut butter and jelly." He said good naturedly as he rose to his feet and followed Lori back over to the bed. Did she realize she was still holding his hand? Holding hands didn't go along with relationships that were based purely on sex. Hand holding meant hearts were beginning to get involved. Had that hit her yet?
Moving behind Lori, Jacen looped one arm around her waist and pulled her tight against him so that they nestled together quite comfortably.
"And you don't always have to be the best either." He murmured quietly, as the two drifted every closer to sleep, "Sometimes it's OK to just relax and be you."

Jacen wasn't sure exactly what had woken him since he had forgotten to set his alarm the night before but whatever the cause he was now lying there just listening to Lori's calm breathing. Honestly he hadn't expected to wake up and find her still in the same bed so for a few moments he just savored the feeling. So this is what it was like to wake up beside someone that you honestly cared about.
"I care about her... don't know if it's love but I do care." Jacen reaffirmed to himself before gently placing a kiss on the nape of Lori's neck and then ever so carefully extracted himself from his intimate position. With slow but steady movement he was able to leave the bed without waking Lori... at least not fully.
Making his way through his morning routine Jacen brushed his teeth, shaved quickly, and then go dressed. He did his best to do everything with as few lights as necessary and as little noise as necessary in order to not disturb his beautiful bed mate. Approximately thirty minutes after waking up Jacen was ready to go. Armed with his duffel back in one hand and a coffee cup in the other.
Just as he was about to open the front door inspiration struck. Setting down his items he went into the kitchen and collected a pen and paper and wrote out a quick note. Walking back into the bedroom he folded the note and placed it on the pillow where he had been sleeping earlier. Finally satisfied, Jacen slipped out of the apartment and headed off to yet another day of fighting crime.

~~~~Lori~~~~
I'm off to work but you looked so peaceful sleeping that I just couldn't wake you. Coffee is brewed and waiting in the kitchen and if you're hungry there are some bagels in the cabinet and cream cheese in the fridge. I'll drop by your trailer in a couple of days to say hi and bring you whatever gifts I think would be appropriate. Take care of yourself beautiful.
"And you don't always have to be the best either. Sometimes it's OK to just relax and be you."
A quick snort out of her nose was the best response she had for that statement. If she'd been willing to pull back from the brink of sleep she would have explained that being herself was being the best. The two were inextricable. So she did have to be the best. She had to be. Because if she weren't she would no longer be herself.
For once, Lori slept in. She groaned herself awake and rolled over to check the time and rolled right onto something crinkly. Curious she dug around in the sheets until she fished out a note. The clock read 10 and that was unheard of for her. And getting a note since she'd slept in and her bed fellow hadn't? It was the twilight zone here.
Clear blue eyes flicked across the paper carefully absorbing any secrets it might have for her. Coffee in the kitchen? She took a deep breath a realized that was true, though it was probably super strong by now. Bagels and cream cheese was a pretty un-screw-up-able food. That was a good choice. What was not a good choice was that he was going to drop by the trailer. He did not say when and that was potential disaster right there since she'd also invited Mars. Lori tossed the note aside and grabbed up the mess of sheets to soak up the last bit of warmth and the smell of their bodies.
It was time to get up.
After sampling the coffee, Lori deemed that it was no stronger than whiskey and she could perhaps use a few chest hairs. She was stronger than the coffee. The sheets and her clothes were all in the washer just now. Lori was smearing cream cheese onto a slightly over cooked bagel in a pair of Jacen's boxers and one of his tee shirts. She somehow didn't think he would mind. In fact, he really couldn't mind if she rummaged through his things a bit, could he? He just left her there unsupervised, after all.
Lori made her way to the TV balancing her bagel and coffee in one hand as she sat on the couch and rummaged for the remote. She would have loved to dig through his movie choice, but there was a very real possibility that she would erase any VHS she neared. Considering he had a DVD and VHS player, she settled for watching some TV while she waited on her clothes. As long as she stayed calm and away she wouldn't bust it.
She washed the coffee pot, put away the toaster and wiped down the counters, She put her mug into the dishwasher and even put the freshly dried sheets back on the bed. Eventually there was nothing left for her to do but leave the clean, spare set of her clothes folded at the end of Jacen's bed. It was practically a promise that she'd be back and in need of a change. She picked up the note she'd tossed aside earlier and tucked it into her pants pocket. She'd left the jeans, baseball tee and undergarments and that left her in one of Jacen's shirts, her black pants, and a lack of under garments. Ah well. She'd be uncomfortable now, but next time she'd have everything she needed.
Briefly she considered leaving a note of response, but a little heart on a napkin seemed too... not her. She shoved that in her pocket too and made sure the door handle was locked when she closed the door after her.
She should probably take a Jacen vacation. Yes. Time away from him sounded wise.
...isn't that what she'd vowed to do last time she left this apartment?
