The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"The only thing I found out was that she walked out of Mondragon Labs one morning, almost as if she was going for a walk. She didn't have any bags or anything like that. She never came back."
Iris fidgeted. Not much comfort could be offered in such a situation, even if she could bring herself to do so.
"I found out a few years ago... The police don't give a crap! about anything. They didn't care about Judy when she was raped and murdered."
She winced visibly, and immediately felt guilty for thinking he was going to do the same thing to her on their first encounter. Although, given the situation, she had every reason to jump to that conclusion.
"I've searched the places I own, Sanctuary. I've gone to her parents' house. Hell, I even checked out the X-Mansion, to see if she had returned there. But I haven't been able to find Nicki, or any trace of her."
"Ni-.... Nicki?"
Iris's face froze in shocked amazement, as did her brain. You could practically see the gears stop moving. Unable to say or think anything intelligent, she settled for movement.
She sat, or rather, plopped down onto the ground. After several moments on trying to assimilate what she'd heard, she stuck her straw back in her mouth. At least it kept her jaw from hanging open.
Finally she managed to speak, though her question seemed far from intelligent.

Kaz noticed Iris wince, he thought it was the sharp tone he had used. He would never have expected it would come from Iris' thoughts on their first meeting. When Iris stuttered when she repeated Nicki's name Kaz was both surprised and not. He hung his head as he chuckled. "Yeah. So you really did know her." He looked at Iris. "When she found out what happened at KP, and what happened at the Mansion...Nicki came to me and was ready to tear me a new one." He laughed at the memory.
"I was already packing my stuff to leave the Sanctuary. I didn't know what Syn had done to you until well afterwards." Kaz went silent for many long moments. "She was going to move in with me if she could still go to school at the Mansion while living outside of it."
Finally Kaz noticed Iris was sitting on the ground, he moved towards her, but kept a respectable distance. Kneeling down he scanned her face. It was obvious she was in shock.
"Who are you?"
Kaz looked at her confused for a moment. He nodded in some slight understanding. He chucked slightly. "I don't really know at times." He smiled softly. "I'm a very...odd and complicated person. I do what I want, when I want. I do what I think is right or necessary...at the time. If I find out I was wrong, I live with and admit it, and try to learn from it. I'm a guy who listens to his gut and emotions when I should listen to my head most of the time."
Kaz stood up and extended a hand to Iris. "I'm probably not so different from you or anyone. I put a mask, I have my skeletons and secrets."

"Yeah. So you really did know her. When she found out what happened at KP, and what happened at the Mansion...Nicki came to me and was ready to tear me a new one."
"Uh huh." The way the words were spoken indicated Iris hadn't really heard what Kaz had said.
"I was already packing my stuff to leave the Sanctuary. I didn't know what Syn had done to you until well afterwards."
"Uh huh." Another bland, and less-than-meaningful response. She didn't even notice the long silence between that and his next statement.
"She was going to move in with me if she could still go to school at the Mansion while living outside of it."
Iris finally shook her head, deeming it useless to try and figure all of this out. It was like trying to figure out a soap opera; unpredictable twists and turns in a plot that made no sense from the beginning.
Her straw slurped. She'd finished her expresso. Huh. Well, the headache was gone, at least. Though now she felt dizzy.
"I don't really know at times."
She blinked. He'd come down to her level and was staring at her again.
"I'm a very...odd and complicated person. I do what I want, when I want. I do what I think is right or necessary...at the time. If I find out I was wrong, I live with and admit it, and try to learn from it. I'm a guy who listens to his gut and emotions when I should listen to my head most of the time."
Well now, that sounded familiar....
"I'm probably not so different from you or anyone. I put a mask, I have my skeletons and secrets."
She stared blankly at the proffered hand, then back at him.
"You realize you're claiming to be normal, right?" She shook her head and closed her eyes and muttered, "I don't think I can take much more of this....." But she accepted the offered help to get to her feet, wobbling a bit as she did. How long had it been since the onyx had activated? Fifteen minutes? Twenty? Half an hour? She couldn't remember.
"Look, Kaz," she began wearily as she rubbed her eyes, "no offense, but I think I've just hit my limit of weirdness today, thanks to you. I liked Nicki, and I'd be glad to help you look for her. Later. But between you, and this gem and the caffeine rush..... I really need to get back to my apartment before I pass out. So, if you'd don't mind...."
She looked around for her bag, who's bump-induced flight had began all of this upside-down madness. Finding it waiting patiently in a doorway, she picked it up and began walking shakily through the shadows.
