Dinner finished much less eventfully than the rest of the evening had gone so far. No accusations, just simply awkward conversation and more awkward silences.
And then Rupert was up, clearing the table, putting the leftovers in the fridge and the dishes into an empty dishwasher. All before Lee could really even offer to help. Though, truth be told, with how much Rupert was moving around, and how little room there was in the kitchen for all that moving, Lee wasn't sure he'd want her help; moving and close quarters did risk contact, after all.
Then Rupert was disappearing. Hmm, so that's it? Lee couldn't help but wonder as she slowly made her way back into the living room where the hockey post game was on TV. He's fed me, offered me somewhere to sleep, and that's all he can deal with for one day? With how uncomfortable he had seemed even as he was offering his couch, it didn't surprise Lee all that much, but she had still expected him to say something, even if it was just a single word, when he left the room for the night.
Flicking off the television, Lee hadn't been interested in the game to start with, Lee was honestly a little surprised that Rupert was back, and more surprised when he set sheets down on the arm of the couch. And despite how uncomfortable he seemed, Rupert seemed to be trying to play the part of a proper host, telling Lee things she might need to know for her overnight stay, which Lee couldn't help but think was only making him even more uncomfortable.
Lee nodded when Rupert informed her that anything in the fridge was fair game if she got hungry over night, as long as she didn't feed the dog as well. Depending on how long it took her to actually fall asleep tonight, or how many times she woke up from nightmares, that information could be very useful.
And then came what almost seemed to be the most uncomfortable, most awkward part of the night. "Thanks Rupert," Lee said softly, giving the man a small smile as he started to make his way from the room. "I really appreciate this. Good night."
Once Rupert was out of the room, Lee took a deep breath and grabbed the sheets, making a bed out of the couch as best she could. Of all the unexpected things that had happened that day, this, her spending the night at Rupert's apartment, was by far the greatest surprise. Never in a million years would she have expected this to happen.
The 'bed' was made, the TV off, and Rupert doing whatever it was he said he had to do in his room. Lee looked around and realized something. Yes, she had somewhere to spend the night, and yes she had packed all her things for her move to Toronto the next day, but she had left those bags at Robert's place; she had nothing to actually wear to bed other than the clothing currently on her back.
Glancing down the hallway that led to the bedroom, Lee considered briefly asking Rupert if he had anything she could borrow. He had said he'd be there if she needed anything else, after all. That thought passed a moment later, though. He hadn't seemed overly impressed by his inviting her to stay. And he had brought sheets out for a couch that didn't fold out. If he had done that so he could toss the sheets the next day, so that his couch would be 'contaminated' as little as possible by her spending the night, she wasn't going to bother him by asking for pajamas.
With a sigh, Lee slipped her running shoes off and moved to turn some lights off. Guess she was sleeping in her jeans that night.
