Ted could smell death everywhere. Burnt flesh. Blood. He tried to block it out, but it was impossible. He could make out every detail; he recognised the scents of captives he knew, that he had come to befriend, but were now dead. He was able to make each one out, allascents that he knew, even if he couldn't put names to all of them. But then one did come with a name; Natalie! He dashed off in her direction, running straight into a guard. The guard was already scared, and when Ted ran into him the guard's gun went off. The bullet blasted through Ted's shin, and Ted dropped. The guard kept on running.
Inside Ted's mind, it had been reduced to the barren wasteland of his primal instincts. He kicked the cage open, but as he had become better at fighting off his instincts, they had become better at fighting back. As he stepped out of the cage, a beast appeared and lunged. Ted was caught off guard, and briefly forced back into the cage. He remembered the first psychic battle against his instincts, and with a little effort he caused a gun to appear in his hand. He levelled it at the beast, and fired. The beast dropped, and Ted left the cage.
The Beast’s eyes snapped open. Ted looked around at the devastation caused by the Resistance. He then caught Natalie’s smell again, all the stronger thanks to his now even greater senses. He then realised; he wasn’t being shocked. The bracelet must have broken. Then he realised that other mutants were using their powers… the bracelets were turned off! He dashed off towards Natalie.
Natalie opened her eyes. Then closed them again. He head throbbed angrily, and she could feel blood rolling down her cheek. She healed herself slightly, prepared for the shock, but knew that it would be better than bleeding. The shock didn’t come. She healed the wound more, and still no shock. She healed herself completely, and then realised. The bracelet was turned off, the Resistance was here! Then she saw the devastation. The Resistance wasn’t a small group of determined mutants; it was an army. The camps had become a battlefield, and she was in the middle of it. She looked around where she was. There was rubble, and bodies. Had something exploded? That would explain her head injury. She must have been just within the blast range, and only been knocked back.
Ted could smell her easily now. He was close. As he bounded across the rubble, he spotted her. She was lying in rubble, looked confused, and scared. Ted skidded to a stop next to her, and she recognised him instantly. She threw her arms around his next, glad that he wasn’t hurt. Then she saw the wound on his leg. “Ted, your leg!” Ted looked down at his leg. It wasn’t bleeding so much, and it didn’t hurt. Instead of pain, he just had an awareness of the injury. Natalie pressed her hands against the wound, and healed him. Ted nodded his thanks as he returned to human form. “Ok, let’s get out of here. Where’s the nearest exit?”
