The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Will, it turned out, wasn’t a native New Yorker at all. In fact, he wasn’t even originally from the US. He’d moved to this side of the border in early high school and had been here ever since.
”Yeowch…” Quin said in reference to starting high school in New York. She’d been lucky, she’d had her middle and high school years in the suburbs, even if her parents had been strange.
Was she the globetrotting type though? ”Nah, I’m from Illinois. Just outside Chicago. Come here for school. My parents still live there…” Quin said, choosing the simplest order of events. She couldn’t very well explain that she’d lived in New York for over a decade before it had all been wiped away.
As for places she wanted to go…Quin had to think about it for a minute. If she could go anywhere…where would it be?
”I honestly don’t know, but I’ve always thought those German fairytale castles sounded cool, so maybe I’d start there.” she said with an easy grin.
"Yeah, learned to keep my head down and ears open pretty quick." Will retorted with a forced laugh as Quin gave her succinct thoughts on going to high school in NYC. "Buncha tension in the news that year too... Social justice stuff, protesting the police... some riots I think. Not a good time to be an unfamiliar face." Culture shock had hit him hard and fast.
Will nodded as Quin gave her own explanation as to where she came from and why she was here. Seemed education of one sort or another had brought them both to the city. "Illinois? Cool. Can't say I've been much out of New York, besides the trip here... And I think I've been to Jersey a few times? Does that count as leaving New York?" He asked, half-joking.
He had to think for a few moments himself as Quin turned his own question back on him. Where would he go, if he could go anywhere? "Jeez, you'd think I'd have an answer ready." Will said apologetically, giving a small grin as he puzzled over the idea.
It'd have to be some place quiet. Maybe a bit remote. Not the tropics, nowhere with too much pollution, and not too near the sea. And there'd have to be something breathtaking to experience. "Ah, I dunno exactly, but maybe one of those Artic places where the northern lights look completely crazy." Will answered with a small nod.
Standing upright and pulling his back off the trunk of the tree he'd been leaning against, Will tugged at the front of his shirt, peeling the fabric off his skin where it had stuck once more. Looking up through the branches of the canopy overhead, he flicked the fabric back and forth to make a bit of a breeze against his skin. "Or maybe it's just our friend the sun makin' me think that."

”I’ll bet you did.” Quin said, shaking her head. Those years were bad enough without a new school and New York City norms and mores.
And it had been during the year of the riots. Quin didn’t remember the riots specifically, but she knew they’d happened when she’d been a cop so it was likely she’d been right in the middle of that whole mess.
Quin’s empathy for the situation was clear on her face, she couldn’t relate to the exact situation but being uncomfortable in her own skin was something she was deeply familiar with.
‘Illinois’ and ‘cool’ were not two words you often heard together unless it was in the specific context of Chicago, but Quin laughed when Will mentioned Jersey. ”I think Jersey is another planet, so it definitely counts.” she said.
Will didn’t have an answer ready for the question he’d asked her and Quin waited patiently as he thought.
The arctic? Northern lights Quin sighed wistfully at the thought, ”God that would be amazing…” Quin said, ”I’d give anything for the air to be so cold it hurt my face right now.” The shade was far better than the sun, but it wasn’t that much better. ”Im sure I’ll feel different in January.”
"Yeah." Will agreed with Quin as she talked wistfully about the idea of the cold, and how she'd probably feel the opposite way come winter. "Grass is always greener, right?" He commented with a chuckle. "But, I think I still like the cold a bit more, y'can always throw on more layers." Will commented, giving his shirt a tug for emphasis before letting the sweat damp fabric fall back against him.
Quiet and cold for him, fairytale castles for Quin. Not exactly trendsetting destinations, nor what first came to mind for exotic locales or vacation hotspots, but that was a bit refreshing.
"German castles though?" Will asked, giving Quin an inquisitive look as he brought her choice back to the forefront of the conversation. "You a big fantasy fan then? Y'know, knights and dragons and princesses?" The man gestured with the empty bottle in his the emphasize the nouns as he spoke.
Will himself wasn't much of a fantasy buff, though had gotten swept up with the occasional blockbuster or media sensation in the genre, like Chess of Crowns a few years back, or the movie series with the magical piece of jewelry, the name of which escaped him for the moment. Even so, he knew the tropes well enough, and working in a cafe as he did caught plenty of the genre through osmosis... especially considering he inevitability wound up eavesdropping on anyone with a habit of reading under their breath, regardless of it he wanted to.

The grass was always greener, Quin had to agree with the sentiment. It wasn’t that the redhead disliked winter, it could be outrageously beautiful in New York City, but it did tend to drag on.
Will was right again though, ”Exactly,” she said to his point about layers, ’It just seems easier to warm up. Days like today it just feels impossible to be comfortable.” At least in the absence of air conditioning.
They were back to Quin’s interest in German Castles and Will was curious if Quin was into fantasy and the like. She shrugged, ”I don’t dislike it.” she said, ”But I feel like all the fairytale castles from when I was a kid were based on German castles. I just always thought things like that would be cool to see in real life.”
Quin thought about it for a few minutes, ”It’s also really flat where I’m from, I like mountains.” The mountains had always been Quin’s favorite places to visit when she’d gone on long road trips with her parents in the summers.
”It’s not as exotic as the arctic, but they’re beautiful.”
Will listened as Quin explained her reasoning for her earlier answer, to go see Germany, visit and tour the castles. Not fantasy, like he'd guessed, but fairytales from when she was younger. That made sense, the things you grew up with tended to stick with you for better or worse. Felt nostalgic, if nothing else. "Be nice to see something more than skyscrapers and warehouses." Will agreed, "Bet it'd feel like stepping into another world, being inside a castle like that."
Will hadn't been many places you could really call mountainous or hilly himself, having grown up entirely in one major metropolitan area or another, but he did have some vague memories of camping trips in northern Ontario that included forested mountains and wide lakes. He was pretty sure at least, no doubt there'd be family photos hiding somewhere on MyFace that'd jog him memory about the when and the where.
"Mountains 're nice. Haven't really been hiking or anything, but... Think I'd go crazy livin' out on the prairies and seeing straight to the horizon."
He shrugged in response to her comment on the arctic being more exotic than mountains. "S'not like I've been anywhere near the arctic. Might end up hatin' it if I ever went. It's just..." Will looked to his left and right, taking in the expanse of the park and the steel and glass of the city beyond it. "Never really been anywhere that's not a city since I was a kid. Place like that, away from all the noise and light and smog... Sounds nice, y'know?"
His tone had slipped into something a bit more soft and serious than he'd intended and he shook his head with a quick laugh, trying to bring levity back to his words. "Probably change my tune the moment it dropped below -30 though."

Skyscrapers and warehouses. They could definitely be overwhelming, Quin mused as she looked out and over the trees where the ever present buildings loomed over everything. It was so weird sometimes to remember those summer-long road trips like they had just happened a few years before, only to be told it had been decades.
Will pointed out that he thought it might make him crazy to live somewhere so open and Quin shrugged with a smile, ”It’s not so bad when you realize that quiet is a thing that actually exists.”.
Will continued to muse about the merits of areas away from the city and Quin nodded, ”My parents are the tree huggiest of hippies and teachers.” she said ”Any time they were off work we were off in our van wandering the country, staying in campground and communes. It has its benefits, but the city does too.” Quin tilted her head slightly and looked at Will again, eyes narrowing slightly in curiosity.
”My parents are the tree huggiest of hippies and teachers.”
Will had to admit that the way Quin had grown up sounded interesting, if a little alien to the way he was raised. "My folks were a lot more urban. Dad was always trying to climb the corporate ladder. Still is, last I heard. Mom was into the community, PTA, HOA, that sorta stuff." He gave a little chuckle and shook his head. "They took me camping once or twice, but, we mostly stuck to the city."
As Quin talked about how she used to travel all over the country with her parents, Will tried to think back on the fuzzy memories of the camping trips. It'd been long enough, he could remember little more then vague recollections of wood smoke and s'mores and the long car ride there and back. Doing that for weeks or months at a time though? Traveling the country, staying in campgrounds and communes, away from the steel and smog and noise of the city? Honestly, he'd have probably hated it back when he was younger, back when he was still living in Canada, but it had a charm to it now.
His sign? Right. Astrology. "Leo." Will answered, sounding only a tiny bit unsure before adding, "Least I'm pretty sure. End of July's Leo, right?"

Will spoke about his parents and Quin nodded. Things for him sounded far more normal than they’d been for her. He spoke about his parents in the past tense though, like he hadn’t talked to them in a while. Quin wondered about that, but it wasn’t the sort of thing you asked a person you’d only just met.
”Camping is one of those things that generally only goes really well or absolutely awful.” she said, ”Not that mediocre camping doesn’t happen…people just don’t talk about it nearly as much.”
Quin had loved it as a kid, running barefoot in the grass, singing along with guitars around a fire pit, all the people cooking together. Swimming in lakes and streams with kids she’d just met that morning… It struck her sometimes how odd it was that she had ended up here in the first place, and thought she couldn’t remember…something had to have happened to make her decide New York was the place to be.
Will spoke, answering the question that Quin had asked and she looked back at him in mild surprise, ”A fire sign.” the redhead said. ”Interesting that the sun seems to have it out for you.”
Quin wouldn’t have guessed Leo from the brief interaction they’d had so far, but Leo’s could be tricky like that with their confidence and charisma. How those things manifested themselves could be shockingly different from person to person and it was hard to tell what kind of influence life had had on a person’s personality.
The sun was starting to sink in earnest now, and Quin knew she’d need to leave fairly soon if she wanted to get out of the park and back to her place before dark…which came earlier in the city because of the way the buildings blotted out the light.
”In all seriousness though, you’re okay now? Maybe don’t push so hard when it’s so hot?”
Quin's talk about her own parents brought to mind his own relationship with his mother and father. Not bad per se, but strained. Texts here and there. Calls on birthdays. Evading questions about when he thought he'd be going back to school, or if he'd found a career. Not a job, a career. Will never did have an answer.
Will gave a short laugh as Quin commented on his sign, hitting again on their shared joke about the sun. "You'd figure it'd cut me a break, eh?" He joked back, peering up at the quickly setting sun through the branches of the trees. Huh, guess he'd been in the park a bit longer than expected.
”In all seriousness though, you’re okay now? Maybe don’t push so hard when it’s so hot?”
"Yeah, I'm good." Will responded with an earnest smile, holding up a hand as though to ward off further suspicion and concern. "But... I'll keep an eye on the temperature next time. Hate to have you have to cut your run short twice on my account." Will did look largely recovered from the earlier exertion, a little breathless and red in the face, but a far cry from before when he'd nearly been bent over double and gasping for air like a fish out of water. Admittedly, he wasn't looking forward to the walk back to his apartment with the way his legs ached and felt like rubber underneath him, but that was hardly an alien feeling.
"Jeez, it's gettin' a bit late." He commented to Quin, bringing up the time and sinking sun as the shadows from the trees stretched out further and further. "Hope I didn't keep you from anything too important." Will gave her a sheepish smile, feeling a bit guilty for taking up Quin's time with his thoughtless stubbornness.

Will assured Quin that he was okay and the redhead nodded, he certainly looked better than he had when Quin had stopped to check on him during the run. Will also promised to pay more attention to the temperature the next time and Quin thought that was probably for the best. She planned to do the same and simply not run if it was going to be anywhere near this hot.
Will seemed to notice the sinking sun then and Quin shrugged lightly, ”It gets dark so early here,” she commented, echoing her thoughts from earlier.
As to whether he had kept her from anything important and Quin actually laughed, ”My wild plans for the evening involve not studying and streaming the alarming number of shows I missed over the last few weeks of the term.” Avoiding spoilers online had gotten dreadfully difficult and she already knew that she was going to pick up on a few things from headlines she’d stumbled on while doom scrolling at night. ”So no, you did not keep me from anything important.”
"I dunno, sounds pretty important to me." Will commented with a smirk, stretching his arms over his head as he straightened up, trying the work the last bits of fatigue from his body. "I know I'd rather binge half a dozen episodes of something, rather than study."
"Personally, I'm just looking forward to the AC at home..." Will admitted with a chuckle, "Was going to go out after this, but..." He waved dismissively at the sinking sun. "Think I'll stay in, look up ways to kill the sun instead."
He pulled his phone out of his pocket, fumbling with it to try and pull up the time. The power button gave a soft click, click, click, as he tapped again and again until the unresponsive device dimly lit up. Just past 8pm? Guess that made sense with the sun hanging so low now.
"But, it's nice knowing there's still people looking out for each other." Will said as he stuffed the thin slate of metal and glass back into his pocket, looking back to Quin. "If you're ever in my neck of the woods while I'm on shift, I owe you a drink or two." Like with any food service job, the only polite thing to do when someone was decent to you was to promise to sneak them something on the house in return. He was pretty sure it was an official code you had to follow. Probably.

”Me too, honestly.” Quin said when Will said that binging TV sounded like a lot more fun than studying. ”There honestly aren’t a lot of things I’d rather study than do.”
Air conditioning did sound amazing and Quin said a little prayer of thanks to the sky that she lived in a modern building with a modern cooling system. Will had apparently been planning to go out, Quin almost told him to make sure he drank some water first but then he said he’d probably actually stay in.
”Tonight does not feel like the night to hit the bars. Everyone will be sweating.” Ew.
Will pointed out that it was nice that there were still people looking out for each other and Quin nodded but smiled. ”Hey. I already explained that I was looking for an excuse to stop…completely self serving activity on my part.”
To that end though, Will offered Quin a drink or two if he was on the job when she was in his neck of the woods. ”I never turn down free caffeine. Where’s your neck of the woods so I can make sure I stop by?” it would have been impolite to simply accept the gesture then never show up. Obviously.
Will nose wrinkled in disgust as Quin suggested it was probably a terrible idea to go out. That everyone else would be struggling with the heat and sweating. The thought of being crammed into a bar with dozens, or worse a club with hundreds of people, all of them humid with the day's heat.
He had to suppress the shudder.
"Ulgh. Hadn't even thought about that." Will said, the sour expression slowly leaving his face as he pushed the thoughts of sweaty clubs and bars away, banishing them as far away as he could.
The conversation moved onto better things, and Quin tried to politely shirk his appreciation for her concern. That it was no big deal, she was actually being selfish. Will cracked a smile at the protestations, his smile broadening as Quin seemed to be willing at least to accept the offer of a free drink. It would seem she didn't feel like she had been that self-serving in her concern, in that case.
"Oh, over between 113th and 114th." Will gestured in the direction he was pretty sure was the right way. Maybe. He wasn't a compass. "Just off Broadway? Near the university... Uh, Columbia, I think."
Wait, was it Columbia, or was he just thinking that because of Columbian coffee? Eh, not that important, the rest of the directions were right. "Place is called Curse & Congregation. I think the owner's Wiccan? Or figured the students would like it?" Will explained, though didn't seem entirely sure about the truth of the statements. "Anyway, it's a board game cafe. You'll know it to see it."

Quin almost felt bad when she saw Will’s reaction to her statement about the people in the bars. In fact, he looked so distraught that she almost wanted to reach out and pat him on the shoulder. Poor guy. The train of thought brought Quin back to a night weeks before when she’d found herself in a less than…sanitary situation at a club though and it was her turn to shudder a bit.
They’d moved on now though and Quin nodded, eyes narrowing slightly in thought as Will tried to explain where she could find the shop where he worked. It was near the University? There were actually several in New York City so that didn’t narrow it down. Between 113th and 114th did though.
Will pointed out the name of the place though and Quin found her interest peaked. The owner was Wiccan? Maybe? Or it was a gimmick? She’d be able to tell the second she walked in. Quin herself wasn’t particularly witchy, but she’d grown up around plenty of wiccans and knew the signs of authenticity to look for. They were generally good folks, wiccans, and where there were wiccans, there was usually tea. Sometimes really good tea.
A coffee shop and a game cafe? ”It sounds amazing.” Quin said, ”Like board games?”
”You might regret telling me about this place. My favorite tea shop ended up on a social media list and I can’t ever get a table to study anymore.” if there were Wiccans, and board games, and any of those coffees Will had mentioned were actually palatable….maybe next semester wouldn’t be so bad.
