Character's real name: Nehanda "Neena" Jenkins Codename/Alias: Night Owl
Gender: female Age: 30 Nationality/Ethnicity: African (Masaai/Swahili) Birthplace: Kenya
Personality: Friendly, helpful, and outgoing. She is a fun person to be around, and a great listener. She usually naps during the day, and roams around in the evenings, part of the reason why she got her nickname, but she has no problems being woken up and asked for help at any time of the day. She can almost always be found with a smile on her face, which sometimes people find annoying. At first she may seem contradictory, because she seems eternally optimistic, but then will suddenly appear pessimistic. In actuality, she just a realist. 'Hope for the best, expect the worst'-type personality.
While she cares very much for the individual, she also sees the whole picture, and may act accordingly, thus appearing cold and uncaring. In fact, the exact opposite is true, though she might have trouble convincing someone that, for example, she broke their leg to keep someone else from getting shot.
It takes quite a bit of effort to understand her, but there is one basic fact: Treat her kindly and be tolerant of her quirks, and she will be your fast friend for life. Betray her, and you've made a dangerous enemy.
Quirks: She likes to be up high (i.e. in a tree, atop a wall, etc.) and sometimes will hang upside down like a bat to think.
Hobbies: She may be reformed, but Neena is still a thief at heart, and will at times go on a break-in spree, without the stealing, simply to see if she can still avoid being caught. If she is caught, she passes it off as 'testing the security system', and will show how to adjust the system appropriately. However, she has still spent numerous nights in jail for her 'tests'.
Phobias: None, due to mutation
Allegiance (Good, Bad, or Neutral): Good
Everyday clothing: Her clothing varies in color and style, but there is always some kind of bird to be found somewhere. Uniform (Optional. Required if eventually becoming part of the X-Men): All black, fitted, one-piece jumpsuit, no visible X-emblem, ankle boots, lots of hidden pockets with and for various objects, dark glasses to hide her eyes.
Pajamas: Whatever’s comfortable.
Hair color and style: Just-longer-than-shoulder-length black hair Eye color: Normally her eyes are a very light grey, almost white. Because of her power, the iris (colored part) of her eye changes color according to her current ‘sight’, becoming just barely tinted. Height: 5' 11 Build: Fairly straight and flat, not many extra curves anywhere, though she is a bit on the hippy side.
Scars: Numerous all over, from claw and bite marks to bullet and knife wounds, as well as several tribal markings. Tattoos: None, though she does have various healed over tribal markings. Piercings: None at the moment
Description of ability(ies): Primary power: Enhanced vision. She has a variety of different ‘sights’ (i.e., x-ray, infrared, telescopic, microscopic, etc.) Unfortunately, the one drawback is that her eyes are super-sensitive to sunlight, so she must wear special sunglasses during the day, or risk being permanently blinded.
Secondary power: Actually more of a mental condition than a mutation (though technically, wouldn't mental conditions be considered mutations of a sort?), Nina has no fear. Not just that she doesn't have it, she isn't capable of feeling it. For this reason she sometimes seems to have fast reflexes. She doesn't actually, she simply doesn't have fear to interfere with her actions/decisions. Also she comes across as slightly insane at times. She also cannot be embarrassed, indimidated, worried or frightened in any other way, nor does she flinch.
Third, passive power: Neena has a photographic memory. Anything she see's, in any vision, she remembers. (Updated 7/24/08)[
List of known 'visions' (More will be described later, as they are approved) - Her Xray isn’t the ‘Superman’-style vision (pick-and-choose, see through anything but lead). Her xray makes everything see-through, stress on everything. It’s like staring at everything through layers of velum or tracing paper. As such, depth perception is severely affected (moreso even then Compound vision), making it difficult to tell what is close and what is far. This particular vision causes her the most confusion, even after twenty years of practice.
[/li][li]Microscopic[/b] - Like a common optical microscope, this allows her to magnify an object, and identify numerous microorganisms. Of course, it doesn’t help if she doesn’t know what she’s looking at. [/li][li]Telescopic (Binocular)[/b] – Like a hawk, she can zoom in and see an object quite far away. She can see clearly and sharply up to 5 miles (though it doesn’t matter, unless she somewhere high enough to allow unimpeded sight-line). She can push her visual line further, but after 5 miles it begins to blur. [/li][li] Infrared (Heat)[/b] – Also known as thermal imaging or heat vision, this allows perception of the infrared radiation given off by the body and most moving apparatuses, which heats up the surrounding air. Naturally, this doesn’t help her identify something that emits no heat. [/li][li] Night[/b] - Often confused with Infrared, Night vision accomplishes a similar objective, but the process and spectrum used is different, and is not dependant on the heat of an object. Unfortunately, she is especially susceptible to ‘retinal burning’ when using this vision. In otherwords, any bright-to-daylight strength light (including ‘white lights’) will blind her, anywhere from a few seconds to up to half an hour. If the light is bright enough or exposed long enough, she risks permanent blindness. [/li][li] Ultraviolet [/b] - In a nutshell, this vision allows her to see in a fourth dimension of color, like some birds and reptiles. It also allows, with the use of a florescent powder, to see what intruders leave behind. ie, fingerprints, footprints, cleaned blood spatter (when luminol is used), etc. On the negative side, ultraviolet is as harmful to her as sunlight, though in a different way. Over use of this 'sight' leaves her with retinal 'burns'. They head faster than the ones direct sunlight leaves, but prolonged exposure would still, eventually, render her blind. In the case of the powder/luminol, obviously, if it’s not there, she can't see it. (Added 9/29/08) [/li][li] Limited Compound[/b] - This vision splits her lens into numerous surfaces, which results in a mosaic vision, like a fly or bee, and allows her to detect motion very rapidly. (Know how it’s so hard to swat a fly? Exactly.) However, just because she can detect the motion doesn't necessarily mean she can do anything about it. ie, She may see a punch being thrown, and be able to dodge it fast enough. She may be able to see someone twitch, ready to pull the trigger on a gun, and attempt to dodge then. But just because she might see the bullet coming, doesn't mean she can't dodge it. In the end, it comes down to her natural abilities. Also, because this vision is 'faceted', the resolution is low (sharpness of the picture is slightly blurred, like an out of focus photo). Also her depth perception is affected, making things seem closer than they actually are. (Added 9/29/08)[/li][/ul] Cons (weaknesses) of ability(ies): Though each of her 'sights' have their own individual drawbacks, there are some general ones that affect them all. While she is able to use various 'sights' in conjucntion (ie, telescopic night vision or microscopic heat vision), she can only maintain it for a few minutes, and doing so results in major headaches, even migraines. Other than her sight, she is a normal human, and is susceptible to any harm that a human can suffer. Also, she doesn't experience adrenaline rushes, so life can be very boring at times. Also sometimes her reactions to events can come across as cold or insane to those who don’t understand her. Photographic memory cons: Neena may not be afraid, but let's face it, there are somethings in life you really don't want to remember..... (Updated 7/24/08) Fighting style (if any): She has no formal weapons trainning, but she can use both a spear and bow and arrow set. Her aim is near perfect. (Developing pattern here? lol) Also she often puts herself in harm’s way to find out as much as possible about her opponent, for both her own benefit and that of whoever’s team she is on. Fighting with her can prove dangerous, to both sides, lol. History of your character: Neena was born in a Masaai tribe in Kenya. Her lack of fear manifested from birth. She lost her mother to a crocodile when she was 2, and her youngest brother when she was 8. She was shunned by most of her tribe, including her stepmothers and father, her only friend being her grandfather, the tribe's Leader. Eventually though, realizing that she would never be accepted, Neena became a thief and took to the streets, at about ten years of age. Her lack of fear meant that she was caught in the act often, but was very rarely picked up by the police, because he would take what seemed like crazy chances to avoid arrest. As her main mutation progressively manifested, she became much more adept at her work and she attempted to find out if she could ever experience the thrill of fear. Along the way she was picked up and recruited to Xavier's school, where she discovered she wasn't capable of fear. That learned, she set about using her gift in a more constructive way. After graduating, she returned home to Kenya, Africa, to aid others like her. Now, at age 30, she's been requested to return to the school. She is a new teacher at Xavier's, mainly in charge of Danger Room training. She has Xman status, but doesn't go on any missions, mainly because she feels her abilities are not useful in the field. She also prefers to be around the kids, and often acts more like a teenager as opposed to her age. Recent History: Neena was among those captured and forcibly registered, and thrown into the Camps. She is one of few who have not had their spirits broken by the inhumane conditions. She constantly wears a smile, though lately even her smile had grown smaller. She's making every effort to keep spirits up, and keep hope alive for others, but it is an uphill battle. She's reverted back to her thievery, in order to try and make life bearable for her and others. Thanks to the head nurse, she had a supply of disposable sunglasses, but they only help a little. Her already-sensitive eyes are slowly deteriorating, threatening her with blindness. She had also turned to a subtle version of revenge; pranks and sabotage of the Guards and their possessions. She hasn't been caught yet, though there've been many close calls, including one incident with a now-blue-haired Jemanai. She's adopted a very klutzy, ditzy persona to deal with the guards; they have no idea what she's really plotting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sample RP: Neena wandered the airport, lost in her thoughts. It had been a while since she’d been to the states; twelve years to be exact. Once she’d graduated, she returned home to Kenya. She never thought she’d be back again, at least, not as a teacher. Considering how difficult of a student she’d been, ‘Teacher’ hadn’t been high on her list of career choices. Not that she wouldn’t have enjoyed pursuing such a career; quite the opposite in fact. But for some reason, most schools seemed to frown on her basic personality. She couldn’t understand why, as the kids were often attracted to her. Oh well. A call from an old friend had given her an opportunity to pursue her teaching career after all. Speaking of which... Neena glanced at her watch. She still had two hours before she was due at the school for a tour, but there was no harm in getting there early. After all it was easy to get lost in New York, especially since she hadn't been there in years. Strange sounds reached her ears. Looking up at a nearby building, she thought she saw people waving. Behind her sunglasses, she blinked. Her vision suddenly zoomed in. The people were indeed waving and yelling at her, and pointing, and they looked frightened. “Now, why would they be frightened?” she wondered aloud. She blinked her vision back to normal, then turned to look where they were pointing. The silver and white belly of an incoming passenger plane loomed overhead as it was coming in for a landing. Neena glanced around, realizing she’d ‘wandered’ onto an active runway. “Oooh! That’s why. Hmm. Don’t know why they’re worried?” With a shrug, Neena adjusted her backpack, turned and headed back the way she’d come, diagonally across the runway. Just as she’d cleared the lights at the edge, an ear-splitting roar sounded, accompanied by a rush of wind. Neena knelt to the ground to avoid being rolled by the wind blast. Once it passed she stood, and wiggled a finger in her ear, which was ringing. “Guess I should’ve brought earplugs. Oh well.” She continued on her way, whistling an off-key version of ‘The Wheels on the Bus’. -------------------------------- An hour and a half later, she’d paid the taxi driver and was standing at the gates of Xavier’s Sister School. She chuckled to herself and shook her head. “You never did do things small, Mr. X,” she murmured. Again whistling, she backed up and looked along the wall. There were several trees nearby. Climbing one, she paused to looked over the wall. With a grunt she launched herself at the wall. She landed with an “Ooof!!”, half on her stomach, hanging on with both arms and one leg. It was an awkward, and comical position, but she managed to climb all the way up, and pulled herself into a sitting position. She sighed, and grinned. “Not bad for a thirty-year-old maid.”She twisted, and fell to the ground, landing on her feet. Still whistling she made her way across the grounds. She was a half an hour early. She wondered if she’d be able to spot the Headmistress from Xavier’s description, or if she’d have to start asking students. That would be a good thing; after all if she was going to be a teacher here, she’d best start getting to know the students as early as possible. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Where did you learn about this site?: rping as Iris and Amp/Vibe[/color] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This is Neena's FUTURE PROFILE. It's a work in progress, but the abilities won't change. All in all, she is still that same overly cheerful, insane lady as always. FP Neena will have the following text color, to distinguish the two timelines.) Character's real name: Nehanda Neena Jenkins Codename/Alias: Night Owl
