Character
Personality: Cora is very confident in life. She has a 'no F**** given' attitude, and is the last one to apologize for anything. Her powers make her feel like there can literally be 'no strings attached'.
Despite being able to see relationships between people, Cora is cynical. She feels that while love may exist, being able to see all the other strings connecting people weakens it. How can someone love one person, then become attracted to another? Over her years she has cheated herself a few times, all with the idea that she could just erase the strings and erase the mistake.
Under the surface Cora probably wants love more than she admits. She has ruined good relationships all on her own because of mistakes, and seeing strings change with time makes her envy. She has seen unbreakable strings in the past, and wants to find that for herself one day. But it is hidden behind her own frustration and emotions.
Hobbies/ Interests: Cora rides a motorcycle, is active and does things like hiking, shooting, and rock climbing. She is interested in fitness and generally likes to be out doing things whenever possible. She doesn't like to be bored and sometimes comes across as a daredevil. Job or part time job and description: Cora owns a rock climbing gym, inherited from her parents. She sometimes works as an instructor there, but more often than not just ends up yelling at people and the staff kick her out. Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Cora is afraid of boredom. She doesn't like standing still, or being forced to do nothing. To her the concept of having nothing to do is actually something worth being terrified of.
Cora's father broke his back in a rock-climbing accident, and seeing him unable to move brought an intense fear of being helpless. Cora never wants to be left where she can't do something for herself, and it has created a reckless abandon to do whatever she feels like. Special talents: Pro rock climber. Physically very fit.
Morality
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Cora borders on Chaotic Neutral to bad. She does what she wants and lives life with an attitude of having no regrets. However, she does have a sense of mercy for bad relationships. When she sees someone suffering, she is more than willing to sever the string and make that go away. To her, erasing a relationship isn't about being nice, but more about getting even with the concept that relationships only cause pain. Removing one is doing justice and getting rid of things forcing people to stay attached after the fact.
Mutations
Mutation description: Threads of Love // I SEE them, YOU see them Cora can see relationship threads connecting people. They are different colors depending on the intensity of the relationship.
Cora can always see the strings, but she can also make them visible to others. By grabbing hold of the threads, she can use her own energy to reveal them to another person. Because some people have many threads, it takes more energy to show them. She usually ignores the lightest ones and just chooses to pick for the troublesome relationship. Finding broken threads and releasing people from them is her own sense of justice.
Threads of Love // I CUT them
Cora has the ability to cut threads connecting people. She can use her right hand, pointer and secondary finger like a pair of scissors, and with energy 'erase' the relationship. What this does is cause a wave of amnesia to both parties. They will forget each other: their interactions, conversations, and feelings. If they were at a party together once, they would remember anyone else there, but not that person. Each persons brain would replace that person in it's own way: another face, a stranger, etc. Actual items from the relationship would not go away. For instance, if they severed a thread from a bad breakup that had a dog, the person could remember the dog, but associate it with their childhood, a friend, etc.
Threads of Love // I TEST Them
Cora can 'attempt' to cut any string other than devotion (dark red). When she tries to cut through a bond and the parties don't share a desire to have it removed, she can temporarily fray it. While the string is still attached, it would look sort of ghostly to her, and the individuals involved would have a temporarily amnesia of each other for an hour. The difference between this and cutting the bond for good is the feeling of attachment would remain. While they may not remember who someone is, if there was extreme danger, they would still be inclined to protect that person they cared about, or if someone was flirting with them, they would feel more a sense of the situation being wrong. The string would repair itself after an hour, and all memories return.
Strengths: Threads of Love // I SEE them, YOU see them Being able to see relationships gives Cora a lot of ammo. She was able to see her friend’s mother growing attached to someone other than her father, she is able to see when someone starts to have feelings for her, and she is able to get rid of those attachments before they are too strong.
Cora is also able to track people by their strings. By picking a string, she can follow it, as if a tiny thread has literally wound it's way through a city from one person to another. By holding the single string she doesn't have to worry about being distracted by other threads. She only sees about an inch of each 'thread' at default.
Threads of Love // I CUT them Being able to erase a bad relationship is freeing. Cora can get rid of old baggage, forgetting faces, and have a good night out without worrying about bumping into someone later.
Threads of Love // I TEST Them
By temporarily severing threads, Cora can confuse the people around her. If she is in a situation she needs out of quickly, this is a good way to cause a problem and get away.
Weaknesses and Limitations:Threads of Love // I SEE them, YOU see them There are many threads attaching people. Cora only sees where the thread starts (about an inch) until she isolates one and decides to follow it. Cora can identify a person by the string connecting them, and while she can't actively see memories, the general 'feeling' coming from a string is what she has to go off of.
Threads of Love // I CUT them Cora is limited to what she can cut.
Some people have multiple strings leading to the same person. If a deep friendship develops a crush, she could sever the crush, but the fact that the friendship remains would keep almost all the memories intact. That would leave a higher chance of the crush strand reforming. // OOC: consent would be needed with the other roleplayer on what threads are severed.
Cora can also only cut certain threads on her own body. The threads on her right hand are permanent and she cannot remove them. This is a side effect of having the 'scissors' attached to the same hand.
Cora can cut multiple strings in a day but each takes energy. Basic strings would feel like a light jog across a parking lot, while cutting a red thread would be like going on a very difficult climb. She could do maybe one or two but not more without rest.
Threads of Love // I TEST Them
Cora uses more energy to fray threads that aren't meant to be cut. If she were to sever multiple strings to get out of a situation, she could escape but would be exhausted by the time she gets to safety. The threads that are frayed would also regrow within an hour, so this has no permanent advantage. Unless she just wants to screw with someone.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Stronger than average from her years of rock climbing, physically very fit and flexible. Cora could win in most fights unless it was against someone more professional. Fighting Style: Cora isn't afraid to fight dirty. Because acquaintance threads are easy to sever, if someone goes to fight her, the first line of defense is to cut the string connecting them. Can't remember me? Can't fight me! Cora also fights a bit like a boxer, a few good punches in fast and she can get out of there. Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Cora's powers are not anything that enhances her physically. She can defend against an average person, but not so much against someone with a powerful mutation.
History Of Your Character Cora grew up in California, and spent most of her childhood enjoying the freedom of a life on the coast. She grew up in a lower income school, and learned to solve most of her problems with her fists. Cora never knew her mother, who was a free-spirited woman who left when she was four. Her dad never complained though. He always claimed he loved her enough to let her embrace her freedom, and did not force her to be tied down with a child.
When Cora was 12 she developed her powers, and she was able to see the dark-red string from her father that led to her mother. She understood he meant what he said when he claimed she would always hold a place in his heart. However, she saw other relationships that confused her. Couples that had strings leading to other people. Friends with strings so twisted she couldn't tell who was feeling what. Cora grew cynical about love in general, and when she was 13, she had a bad breakup, and learned she could 'cut' that person out of her life. It was a new start, and it developed into her being a darker person.
Cora's father bought a rock climbing gym in New York and they moved there when she was 14. Cora helped him out before and after school, and this was probably one of the lighter points in her life. Eventually, she met a girl named Mae, and there was a short but intense relationship there when Mae's father passed away. However, Cora couldn't handle how dark the string from Mae to her was getting, and ended up cheating on her. While Cora could sever the relationship to the other person, she found she could not sever Mae, and that resulted in a messy breakup that she regretted. The string on her right hand is dark purple, but she cannot cut it, and it's a reminder that some mistakes cannot be undone.
When Cora was 21, her father had a rock-climbing accident in the mountains. He broke his back and became limited to a wheelchair, losing all mobility. Cora took over the gym, but they made enough he could afford to get a nurse to take care of him so she could continue with her own life in the meantime.
Now 24, Cora is living her own adventures.
Roleplay What’s your OOC alias?: Mati Where did you learn about this site?: I've just been here. Do you have any other characters on MRO, if so who: Tses, Evelyn, Zaid, Malcolm, Blue, Mae Sample RP:
Cora dipped her hand into the bag on her waist, scooping up more dust before reaching for another hand-hold. Her muscles flexed as she lifted higher, swinging one leg up, than the other, target in sight. Her pale knuckles let the strings on her hand stand out more than normal today, threads only she could see. On on hand, a tiny pink string connecting to a cute bartender she met across the road, and on the other, a dark purple string she could never get rid of. That one bugged her, a lot, but she learned just to ignore it.
There was another thread, one that wound to wherever her father was today. That one was red, but it was a thread she could handle. Her dad had been there throughout her childhood, the one red string she would hold onto through the years.
"Hey Cora! We got a new trainee coming in today. Did you want to meet them or want me to handle their intake?"
Cora muttered to herself, and like a spider monkey she recklessly made the last few grabs to hit her buzzer. If she had fallen, even the safety mats wouldn't have stopped injury, but she didn't own this place for nothing. She climbed back down in record time, taking a jump at the end that made the manager cringe. "So where's the new punk? Let's see how they climb." Better get this over with. She had better things to do today.
