The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It took a lot longer to get back to the X-men headquarters on foot than through the mirrors. In fact, Jesse lost his way twice, and ended up going in circles until he could orient himself by the reflective surfaces (that he stayed well away from, thank you very much). It had been years since he walked on a street like a normal person. If he had not been cautious of SUPER, he would have enjoyed every minute of it.
It was chilly outside. He was cold. He was also hungry, and he was wearing clothes borrowed from Gawain, for the first time in a very long time. He was wearing an old face too; the dark-haired, roguish one that had been the very first of his faces that Becca ever saw. It was only appropriate, really. The old signature smirk appeared on his lips as he walked up to the apartment door.
He lingered, for a moment. This should have been very romantic. Even with their conjugal visits of the mirrorworld, there was nothing quite like coming home. Really home. He hoped Becca was not going to freak out. And he also hoped that whatever it was, it was permanent. He was not sure he could have gone through the same ordeal another time. If he had to smash all mirrors in the apartment, so be it.

Pregnancy was exhausting. Rebecca was constantly tired, she felt swollen, she was dealing with cravings and her mirror-bound spouse could not go out in the middle of the night so she could address them, and of course, she waddled. She was defiant early in her pregnancy that she was too graceful to waddle, but entering into the home stretch of the incubation, the physical changes were becoming unavoidable.
As much of a workaholic as Rebecca was sometimes considered, she was starting to burn out with work. She no longer took a role behind the bar, and thankfully, none of her bartenders wanted to be the girl who made their pregnant boss fill in. Even still, the back office work was still draining in combination with her (minimized) role with the X-Men.
At the very least, Rebecca was done for the day. She removed her bra the moment she entered the apartment, knowing Astrid was staying at the base for the night for training and surveillance. She called out for Jesse, but was surprised not to hear her spouse call back. They knew her schedule and usually waited at the apartment for her return. Rebecca dismissed the silence; how much concern trouble a mirror-locked person get into?
Rebecca was just getting into her comfy pants when a knock on the door could be heard from the entryway. Cautiously, she approached the door, wondering who could be dropping in so late. With SUPER still lurking around, she was careful answering the door at all times.
She was not greeted by a SUPER Agent or a friend. The face she saw was a face she immediately recognized. A face she knew she would never forget.
And in that moment, Rebecca looked, wide-eyed and speechless. After years lost, her brain was at a loss to process how Jesse was standing before her.
Jesse braced himself as the door opened. For one, he hoped that Becca would not be overly upset, and just keep over or something from joy... and he could also not completely sure that his wife would not just outright blast him out of the building for being suspiciously not in the mirrors. So, he stayed still, waiting for the visual to process, hoping that Becca would recognize his face. He had not used it since the very first time they met.
There was an endless pause as Becca's mismatched eyes stared at him. Eventually, Jesse flinched first; he made a shy smile and wiggled his fingers in greeting.
"Hey, honey." really, what could he possibly say? She looked lovely. Like a graceful, six months pregnant deer in headlights. "Um... surprise?"

Not having Jesse around for years of her life was the hardest thing Rebecca ever had to deal with. When her parents died, she was too young to properly process the pain. When she lost her team, she was an absolute mess, but she was able to focus herself on rebuilding the X-Men. Realizing that the person she loved more than anything in the world was stuck on the other side of a mirror and likely would be for the rest of their lives, though? It was the kind of defeated that left you wondering why you should continue if things were never going to get better.
There were times when Rebecca wanted to hope. She had plenty of dreams where Jesse made it out of the mirror. She also, unfortunately, had plenty of dreams where she watched her spouse get shattered. Meeting Mirror gave Rebecca the most tangible spark of hope she could remember having, but while getting to take visits to the other side made things easier, it was not the fix she always hoped for.
And so, standing in her doorway, looking at the first face Jesse ever wore with her, Rebecca was too overwhelmed to process her thoughts. Could she really be dreaming? If so, her mind was crueler than she deserved. A trick or a spy? It all felt too good to be true.
But Jesse smiled. And he greeted her like the charming dork she married. The tears welled in her eyes as she choked out the name, ”Jesse…” The flood of emotions crested and she jumped forward, throwing her arms over Jesse’s shoulders to pull him into a tight hug. She buried her face in the spot between his neck and his shoulders. It felt real. He was real. Happy sobs were muffled by her real husband.
Eventually Rebecca gained just enough composure to pull away slightly, only to move in for a long, deep kiss. They were not sharing a moment in a warped mirror dimension. She was kissing Jesse half in the hall and half in the apartment that they could finally share together again.
The kiss broke and Rebecca would have smirked if she was not permanently smiling from ear-to-ear. ”It took you long enough… You know it’s impolite to keep a girl waiting.”
Becca teared up as she looked at him, and Jesse's chest tightened too as he looked at her. She was beautiful, and radiant, and very pregnant, and, most importantly, on the same side of the mirror world. Eventually, she moved first, burrowing into his shoulder and hugging him tight. Jesse hugged her back, wrapping his arms around the compact bundle of her body, and hummed softly, pressing a kiss to her temple. She was real... she was more real than she had been, even on their... conjugal visits to the mirrors. Maybe it was just Jesse's senses setting back to normal. Sounds, smells... everything was more vivid on this side.
Becca pulled back and kissed him. Jesse kissed back with all the passion he had for her. She was smiling when she pulled back.
>>”It took you long enough… You know it’s impolite to keep a girl waiting.”
"Sorry, it took me some time to figure it out. You're the brains, you know that." Jesse smiled back at his wife. The door was still open, so he moved into the hallway and pushed it shut behind him, before he leaned down to pick Becca up in his arms "Umph, you're... a very beautiful pregnant woman" he corrected with a grin, carrying her back to the living room. Their living room. To a couch. That he could now sit on. With her.

It wasn’t a dream. Rebecca was kissing her husband outside of the confines of the mirror world. Everything felt more real; the way her fingers felt running through his hair, the taste of his lips. It was just an assault of good feelings overwhelming her because she thought she would never experience them again.
Jesse was still every bit the charmer and flatterer he always was. He was also the perfect romantic, and he was taking advantage of his physical form to carry her—with some effort—across the threshold. She giggled through her fresh tears. ”Call me fat and you’ll be sleeping on the couch tonight.” Had there ever been an emptier threat issued? Pregnant or not, she had so many plans for her evening with Jesse after such a long break.
They took a seat on the couch, with Becca sitting sideways so her legs were overlapping Jesse’s and she could hold her husband from beside him. She kissed him on the cheek. ”This is so wonderful. I have someone to run and get me craving foods now,” she teased before her eyes widened. ”Oh my God, you can eat. I should have cooked! I just ordered a pizza. I could make something though! I should make something.” she said, feeling like she should have somehow known she would have a husband to cook for that night.
If Becca was heavier than usual, he did not feel it. She had a nice round baby bump, but the joy of carrying her, to a couch, distracted him from measuring actual weight. She fit so well. And looked so happy.
>> ”Call me fat and you’ll be sleeping on the couch tonight.”
"You are not fat, you are pregnant" Jesse reiterated, resting a hand on her belly as they settled down "And yes I enjoy saying that."
Such a simple thing, sitting a couch with one's wife. Often portrayed as an uninteresting marriage. People needed some perspective on that.
>>”This is so wonderful. I have someone to run and get me craving foods now... Oh my God, you can eat. I should have cooked! I just ordered a pizza. I could make something though! I should make something.”
"You should stay put" Jesse wrapped an arm around Becca as she wiggled "One, you didn't actually know I was coming home... like this. And two, seriously, hun, I have not had pizza for years. You should have ordered two."

Had it really been over two years since Becca and Jesse curled up on a couch? It felt so natural, like it was how they ended every night together. There were nights when things were so hard and Rebecca cried herself to sleep, yet now they felt like a distant memory. There were temptations and doubts along the way, but she would change nothing; why would she when something so simple give her the best feeling in the world?
Her hands rested on Jesse’s atop her baby belly. She made the motion to go to the kitchen, but Jesse thankfully tethered her down to the couch in his arms. As much as she wanted to play the good wife after such a long time, she also had no desire to leave his side. She might never do so again.
Instead, she just rested her head on Jesse’s shoulder, smirking. ”I’d love to say you can have most of the pizza, but I can’t make any promises once the pregnancy monster comes out.”
Becca did not insist too much before she settled down. Jesse wrapped his arms around his wife. Couch, wife, baby bump, pizza. The perfect evening.
>>”I’d love to say you can have most of the pizza, but I can’t make any promises once the pregnancy monster comes out.”
"You can have all the pizza you want." Jesse promised gallantly, although the thought of pizza kind of made him feel like he should shift into a female body and claim sympathy cravings. "Okay, so maybe not all... Like, 95% of the pizza?... We should just order a second one, shouldn't we? And maybe Chinese. Ooooh, burritos! Definitely burritos. What say you, hm?..." that last part was spoken directly at the baby bump, who as the definite source of said cravings, was the ultimate authority on food decisions. Probably for the next 18 years at least.

Part of Rebecca felt like she should be doing something big. Where was the champagne she couldn’t drink?
It was unnecessary. Curling up on the couch and eating with Jesse felt like the most rewarding way to possibly spend her time.
No sooner did that thought enter her head than she had to revise it thanks to Jesse. The man definitely knew the perfect things to say to make Rebecca’s eyes light up. ”I love you,” she pointed out with a smirk before adding, ”Go get the menus from the kitchen.”
One round of phone calls to delivery places later, Rebecca was back on the couch, eagerly awaiting their feast and laying on her back so her head could rest on Jesse’s lap. ”So as much as I want to just chalk this up to a miracle, how did this happen, Jesse? How did I get so lucky?”
Jesse was probably going overboard with the food idea. It was like going shopping when hungry - there was no way he was going to eat all the stuff they ordered. But he was at least going to try them. And then feel horrible after. Solid plan.
>>”I love you. Go get the menus from the kitchen.”
Jesse grinned and kissed his wife before he went to get the menus. It was such a simple thing, walking into another room and fetching something so that she didn't have to. It was one of the million small things he had not been able to do in the past years. They ordered a sinful amount of food, and settled on the couch again. Becca rested her head on his lap, and Jesse ran his hand through her hair, admiring the feeling.
>>”So as much as I want to just chalk this up to a miracle, how did this happen, Jesse? How did I get so lucky?”
"We missed the obvious." Jesse chuckled, shaking his head. He could still scarcely believe it really had been that easy. "Mirror and I went to get the shifter kid from SUPER. We took him to the Mansion to keep him safe, and... they have a counselor there, who is an adapted human. What SUPER calls Kappas. She walked close to the mirror, and... boom. "

Rebecca was overjoyed. Not only did she have a spouse; she had a spouse willing to enable her pregnancy cravings. She was living the pregnancy dream! How on earth did she last so long without Jesse?
It was a genuine question: how had she survived so long? It seemed crazy now that she could feel Jesse's warmth and touch his skin and kiss those familiar lips. Regardless of the form Jesse took, she would never mistake his kisses for anyone else.
The food was ordered and Rebecca was content, almost ready to purr at the sensation of her hsuband's fingers running through her hair. He peace was nearly broken when Jesse explained how he was freed, mainly because Rebecca could not believe how stupid she was. "I'm such an idiot!" she groaned, turning her head to bury her face in Jesse's thigh for more extended groaning in frustration. "I shoulda dragged that SUPER to you when we were in their base. I shoulda pulled her by the ear until she got you outta the wall."
Of course, most of that was muffled by Jesse's leg. Rebecca finally turned over and sighed, a sheepish smile finally returning. "You know what? Whatever. All I care about is that you're here. You're here and I love you and you're going to get fat with me and make me feel better about it."
Becca groaned and rolled over. Looking back, the solution was so obvious that Jesse was already kicking himself for not recognizing it sooner. But he really could not blame his wife for making the same mistake. They just did not know enough about adapteds for the option to be on their radar. It was nobody's fault.
>>"I'm such an idiot! I shoulda dragged that SUPER to you when we were in their base. I shoulda pulled her by the ear until she got you outta the wall."
"You didn't know." Jesse chuckled, patting her on the back "It could have easily gone some other way."
>>"You know what? Whatever. All I care about is that you're here. You're here and I love you and you're going to get fat with me and make me feel better about it."
"I love you too" Jesse grinned down at her "And I can get fat right now if you want. Shapeshifter, remember? Although I'm not gonna look as good as you do." he added with a softer smile, resting his hand on her belly again.

Jesse made a good point. For the longest time, Rebecca was worried that anything could shatter them or cause them to vanish. Adapteds could have ended up on that list, and as much as Rebecca wanted Jesse out of the mirrors, she would not do anything that ran any possibility of killing off the person she loved.
As always, Jesse was the best she knew at saying the right thing at the right time and making her smile. Rebecca lifted her head off Jesse's lap enough to move up for a sweet kiss. Her head fell back down, resting comfortably. "Good answer. Though no cheating; you have to get fat the regular way with me." Well, minus the baby.
And speaking of, in a moment of brief but pleasant silence, Rebecca felt the child within her kick, prompting her to giggle at the little thump feeling before it hit her-- that was the first time Jesse had felt the baby move. "Honey, did you feel her?"
Jesse took a moment to drink in the realization that, for the firs time in a long time, their dreams of family might actually be possible. He was out of the mirrors, and hell if he was ever going back in. He could allow a moment to imagine growing fat together and changing diapers. Sure, they were still X-men, and mutants hunted by the government, but for tonight at least, he was not going to think about that. He smiled as his wife kissed him, still resting his palm on her belly.
>>"Honey, did you feel her?"
He did. Jesse's face took on an expression of pure wonder as he felt the little bump move and then kick again. He was sure he had never felt anything quite so magical in his life.
"Hello there" he let out a soft laugh, leaning over to press a kiss on the bump "Strong like your mommy, huh?"
Jesse was going to be a completely soft-hearted father/mother.
