The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

When she told Devon that he could set the pace, he speed up a bit and Lee easily matched him. She had more than enough energy to run circles around him, so she had no problem jogging beside him.
When Devon started explaining his powers, Lee listened intently. She could see how not having control of powers affecting weather could be problematic to say the least. ”It's probably not as drastic or noticeable, but my emotions affect my powers too,” Lee told Devon with a bit of a shrug. Not likely noticeable considering their jogging. ”I mean, it's probably like that for most mutants, especially at first.”
Then Devon was saying that he could arrange for her to be able to use the training facilities at the Sanctuary, and Lee smiled over at him. ”That could prove to be quite useful,” Lee said, glancing over to Devon. ”Though, it would be nice to not have to leave Manhattan to practice with my powers. That's why I never made much use of that at the Mansion.”
Devon was intrigued to hear how Lee’s abilities were affected by her emotions. But he held back from any further comment when she mentioned that it seemed that way for most mutants. In Devon’s experience that was not true, not in the way that Lee likely meant though Devon knew he was a more extreme case anyway. He’d wait to speak on such when they knew each other better as it was seeming likely…
He was happy to have the conversation turn to Sanctuary. If Lee was a well-meaning, even mildly philanthropic sort, perhaps he could convince her to visit, volunteer some time, and make use of the facilities there. “It’s certainly useful,” he continued smiling as they jogged along, “It’s not that far and for peace of mind when practicing your abilities, rather worth it I think. Plus, if you’ve got a lot of energy to burn…” He chuckled, “There’s plenty to do there, always. But it’s not required. It’s a community center too and when mutants need practice help, I like to be sure they can get in. Your son could come as well, plenty of kids there and we’re very careful with security. The community has really embraced Sanctuary now and we aim to keep it that way.”
“There’s parts of Red Hook I’d practice in too, abandoned warehouses and the like, but things have changed. A lot of urban renewal in the last year will do that,” he nodded. “Otherwise, I venture out east to Montauk but that’s a far longer drive,” he laughed again.
“Are you still affiliated with the mansion or the X-Men?” he queried, having waited to address that detail. “I visit occasionally, see a few friends and I have a few patients there from time to time.”

Lee listened carefully as Devon talked about the Sanctuary. That did sound good, Not only other kids there for Kevin, but the larger community was embracing the place? A place that was known to help and house mutants? ”That sounds amazing,” Lee said, looking over at Devon as they jogged. ”How did you guys get people to become more accepting?”
From her trips to the Labs, Lee knew that it could take quite a while to get to Brooklyn. But they had had to rely on cabs or public transportation then. Lee did have a car now, and her licence, even if she hadn’t driven since moving back to New York. ”But it does sound worth checking out. And as much as I hate it, Kevin is getting older. It’d probably be good to start getting him around some other mutants than just me and his father so he can see other, more generally useful, powers.”
Was she still affiliated? What? ”I’ve never been,” Lee said, the confusion likely evident in her voice.”I have friends who’ve lived there as well, though I’m honestly not sure if they still live there. At one point, I was quite familiar with the infirmary, and DocProf delivered my son, but I’ve never lived there or anything.”
>> ”How did you guys get people to become more accepting?”
Devon smiled proudly, “It went a bit in both directions, honestly. A lot of outreach, volunteerism, transparency of who and what we are. In the wake of the tragedy at Odessa, we wanted to embrace our differences and the community. There were some groups trying to threaten that and the residents in the area, but we pushed them back. We had a block party to invite everyone in, gather donations, etc. It helped we encouraged and worked with the police willing to visit.”
>> ”But it does sound worth checking out. And as much as I hate it, Kevin is getting older. It’d probably be good to start getting him around some other mutants than just me and his father so he can see other, more generally useful, powers.”
Devon nodded. “It’s amazing what representation and a community can do,” he smiled. “While it brings some together through necessity, many learn a lot about other cultures including human and mutant. Education is one of the core values now.” And partly where Haven had come from.
She then explained her affiliation with the Mansion, which was a little confusing at first. He kept his jog at the same pace as he learned she’d never been yet being familiar with the infirmary. Maybe that’s because of who had delivered her son. She sounded just as confused as he.
“Sorry, I’m confused,” he glanced to his side and chuckled a bit, “You said you’ve never been but you’re quite familiar with the infirmary? Indirectly you mean? Maybe I’m tired after all. I’ve never lived there either though, simply friends with a few and I visit.”

As Lee listened to Devon talking about what had been going on at the Sanctuary in the time she’d been away from New York, Lee found her eyes looking over at him more and more. ”That...sounds amazing,” she said after a few moments. ”Truly. A lot of hard work, obviously, it really sounds worth it.” A block party, police officers willingly visiting? Lee shook her head with a slight smile, it was almost unbelievable to her.
But when she spoke about her limited involvement with the Mansion, Devon sounded confused. As he spoke, the misunderstanding became apparent to Lee, and she answered quickly to explain. ”I’ve never been affiliated with the Mansion, but I’ve been to the Infirmary there quite a few times over the years. By the time I found out about the place, I was settled enough that I didn’t need that kind of help, and I’m not exactly a teacher. Plus,” Lee finished with a shrug. ”Despite their intentions, I never really felt it was the right place for me.”
“Oh, thanks,” Devon laughed. “You never know sometimes. Maybe some sort of astral projection means you’ve seen it but never been there,” he shook his head and took a few quick breaths to compensate for the laughter.
“Agreed on the Mansion though. When I was younger, it may have been good for me though I likely would have rebuffed. My power was dangerously out of control as was I so it’s probably best it went as it did,” he nodded as they continued their jog. “I think – I know – I offended one or two before with my inquiry around their public involvement, government workings. I’m extremely thankful for what they’ve done though that wasn’t quite right for me. Not to say I don’t do my own public works, but I meant that more literally with the volunteering and all.”
“But if what we’ve done at Sanctuary interests you, I’d encourage you to visit. It’s nice to have a community and those of us who are settled can sure help those that aren’t,” he nodded, meeting grey eyes once more. “There’s a bigger picture to it too with the Haven organization’s involvement, but that’s volunteerism and striving for change on a larger scale. I think it’s good to know Sanctuary is well-positioned now, protected and striving. Having it be accepted by its community has been a challenge, but a good one. I’m sure some aren’t so pleased, and certainly there’s a new challenge in the impact from those beyond the Rift, but society isn’t just one person and the world’s gotten a lot bigger lately. Two worlds.”
Devon laughed anew with a sigh in his voice as they passed one of the ponds, the perimeter lined with twinkling reflections of the lamp posts. Cool breezes blew off the water. The winter cold was going to settle into the city and soon.

Lee nodded as she heard Devon’s words about the Mansion, and about the activities of some there. ”Yeah, some of what they do is useful, but I haven’t seen it do a whole lot in the long run,” Lee agreed.
Lee continued to listen carefully, looking over at Devon every so often as they ran. ”It does sound intriguing,” Lee said about the Sanctuary. ”I’ll make sure to stop by and check it out soon. If nothing else, from what you say it’ll be good for Kevin.”
Then Devon started talking about the ‘bigger picture’, and Lee nodded. A nod that Lee was sure Devon saw since they happened to be looking at each other at the time. ”Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to matter how much change happens, long term change doesn’t seem to happen unless it’s done on a large scale,” Lee commented. Such as taking over an entire drug cartel to curb the violence in Columbia.
”But I am glad to hear that the community as a whole seems to be accepting the Sanctuary more. It’s a good step to actually accepting us as individuals with everything that we can do.
“Yeah, the Rift,” Lee said, almost on a sigh. ”So many new questions, and so many new potential problems. Cause does anyone really know what’s going on with the Rift and that other world?
>> ”Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to matter how much change happens, long term change doesn’t seem to happen unless it’s done on a large scale,”
Devon gave that a very curt nod, “It’s never just one law or just winning over someone’s side. It’s about educating society, making policy change, outreach, and sometimes more…” He paused as his tone grew firm, “I agree completely.”
He nodded again about Sanctuary’s community, the inclusion and acceptance, but a frown crept up as she questioned the other side of the Rift. “Actually, I’m starting to think it’s Haven’s place to educate people about what life is like over there. We do know. It’s extremely anti-mutant and dangerous. There’s a special government agency that tracks and even takes mutants it finds of use. It’s called SUPER. I advise you never visit the other side of the rift,” he shook his head. “It’s not safe for mutants and seems a grimmer world overall.”
Devon’s eyes narrowed as he seemed to look more vacantly in Lee’s direction. He stopped jogging and blinked, “Excuse me, but I think your question has given me some things to do in the morning.” He made eye contact – real eye contact – with her again, “Can I give you my number? I didn’t bring my wallet so I don’t have a card on me.”

”And there’s always that little bit more, that one person who changes their mind, or does something you don’t expect,” Lee said, shaking her head. Like in Columbia. Like in Romania. Like Slate changing his mind and going to college.
They knew that much about the other side of the Rift? ”As if we haven’t dealt with that enough with the Registration Acts in our own world,” Lee replied. ”It figures, though. Just when you think that we’ve moved past things like that, they get shoved back down our throats.” Again, Lee shook her head, then looked back over at Devon. ”Not that I’m planning on going over there or anything, but unfortunately there have always been dangerous places for people like us.”
But then Devon stopped jogging, and Lee stopped as well, taking a couple of steps back toward him. Her question gave him something to do in the morning? That...was curious. Lee wondered what it was he had decided that he needed to do in the morning, decided because of something she had said. Before she was able to ask about that, though, Devon asked if he could give her his number. Because he didn’t have a card on him. ”Yeah, sure,” Lee sadi, pulling her cell out of her pocket so she could save Devon’s number. ”Any particular time or day you want me to give you a call?”
>> ”And there’s always that little bit more, that one person who changes their mind, or does something you don’t expect,”
Like the President or any number of radical, possibly in need of assistance individuals. Of course some people were simply swayed easily, especially in a group. They didn’t call it mob mentality because they were all individual thinkers. Devon nodded with a faint sigh.
He was glad Lee wasn’t planning to visit the other side of the Rift but she was right, they’d had their own issues. A frown remained on his lips as he thought on the registration act and the camps. There was a great deal he wanted Haven to do and its members to be proud of, but SUPER and activities like their own past had to be exposed and stopped. He had some things to arrange in the morning.
Thankfully Lee seemed receptive to getting his number and talking more tomorrow. He needed to get home, get some plans down on paper, and get a few meetings scheduled. Devon gave her his number and then answered he with a soft smile, “Any time you want to call you can. However, around one or after four would be best. We’ll see up a visit to Sanctuary.” He nodded with another smile.
“Thanks for running with me, by the way. I may not have been able to sleep but I’m glad for it now,” he said with renewed positivity and a still brighter smile. “Enjoy the rest of your run and if you don’t mind – and I’d ask this of anyone I met running about late at night in the park – a text to let me know you get home safe would ease the mind.”

Lee nodded when Devon gave her preferred times to call him. One in the afternoon would only work if she didn’t take her daily nap, and with having gone for this run she should have her energy low enough that she should actually be able to fall asleep. After four o’clock would definitely work better. Sure, Kevin would be around by that point, but he was used to her having to either work or do homework at home at times. ”That I can manage,” Lee said, saving Devon’s number in her phone before tucking it back away.
And Devon thanked her for the run. Lee smiled and gave a nod of agreement. ”It was far more enjoyable than a solo run around this place. And it’s given me some things to think about too.
“Fair enough, I can shoot you a text,” Lee told the younger man. Even though she wasn’t particularly worried about her own safety while running in the park, even at night, others often were. Even when they knew full well what she was capable of, which Devon did not. ”Just, don’t wait up for it. I could still be out here for a while yet. It was nice to meet you.”
Giving Devon one last smile, and a quick wave, Lee started off again running down the path, tucking her earbuds back in to hear her music as she went.
