The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Nate had to give Devon a break because he obviously meant well. Natalie was a touchy subject and it was made touchier because there was so much uncertainty in what they were looking for. On paper, they both wanted something low-risk, but in practice, there was probably no such thing. Quin and Natalie were different people and, much to his surprise, he and Quin were handling light and casual far better than he and Nat.
For the time being, it was best to flip the script and get Devon in the hot seat. For a man who could give advice out freely, introspection seemed to be a bigger challenge. Devon was fixing the world first and himself fifth or sixth.
As expected, Nate struck a chord with his teasing comment. He even gave up a telling comment about Noel. ”She didn’t, we both just clearly see your need to crack that shell of yours. Or, you know, at least get laid,” he added nonchalantly, knowing that was sure to get a reaction out of Devon.
Apparently, after the mess Devon went through with his doppelganger, Noel’s advice had less to do with stress relief and more to do with the lonely lifestyle of leader. She was not wrong; Devon’s life had a lot of responsibility and plenty to weigh him down with, and all those things were easier to process with support. Friends were nice, but a real connection was special. Nate would hold his tongue, though, because he had little room to comment with his current predicament.
What he had no problem commenting on? His speculative remarks regarding Devon’s sexuality. He’d answer for those with a grin on his face. ”I expect nothing. It’s a big, varied world out there and it’d be pretty hypocritical of me to assume heteronormativity in the people around me. So I figured I’d keep it open ended.” Nate had guesses, but he was not going to jump the gun by full-on assuming anything about Devon.
>> ”She didn’t, we both just clearly see your need to crack that shell of yours. Or, you know, at least get laid,”
“Heh,” Devon said with half a laugh, half a grin. The closest to action his bed had seen was actually with Noel… and Dopple Devon the Demon. What troubled him more was that two people had similar thoughts or feelings about him, yet hadn’t conferred on the subject. Did he seem that untouchable, that closed off? When had his reserved but friendly demeanor become a shell? When had his friendships not become enough?
Probably when those friendships became more like work-friendships and he saw friends rarely. A lot was coming down to work, the purpose he put his energy to, and the need to not be closed off from things – whatever those things were. Probably all the over-analyzing didn’t help and gee, look what he was doing.
Serena. Juliette. Max. Matthew. Spasm. Artair. Ghost. Muse. Ranger. Noel. How many had disappeared even? He couldn’t reach Agnes, hadn’t been able to find Matthew…. The world was a busy place, but was part of the problem he wasn’t making friendship enough of his business? That sounded awfully terrible, considering he felt humanity was part of his business.
But something more than friends, someone within the groups of ladies or gentlemen? Devon was intrigued to hear what Nate had to say on the matter. It wasn’t something Devon troubled himself with, but maybe it was also something he tried to ignore.
>> ”I expect nothing. It’s a big, varied world out there and it’d be pretty hypocritical of me to assume heteronormativity in the people around me. So I figured I’d keep it open ended.”
A black eyebrow arched as Devon slowly turned his head fully in Nate’s direction. The video game wasn’t as important even if he was dying again. He jerked and ducked back behind some ruined walls and then looked back at Nate. “Hypocritical?” he queried. “Well maybe I don’t know Nathaniel Holloway as well as I thought.” He chuckled briefly, “I suppose open ended would be one way to say it.”
Nate had to give his friend a little leeway; with his lifestyle and his responsibilities, dating was not an easy landscape to break into. It was hard to meet someone without any pretense or preconceived notions, and anyone’s intentions could be less than pure. Devon had every reason to be guarded, but Nate and his friends had to be around to encourage him to take chances. (And possibly threaten anyone who would mistreat him.)
Part of what made Haven a place Nate felt at home in was the sense of belonging. He had friends, he had family, and there were… other people he was close to in different but not insignificant ways. The point was, he had people he cared about and who knew him better than most.
And now Devon was learning something new about Nate, which he found amusing. ”I am a man of many mysteries and varied taste. There were many women along the path of roguishness, but they were definitely not alone. Heck, there was a cop I met at a bar recently and… well, let’s just say he’s a very pretty man.”
Nate watched as his character was once again killed on screen, prompting a sharp, ”Sonuvabitch!” He took a sip of his drink to distract from the fact that he was not good at video games. He looked back to Devon and smirked. ”For the record, you are also a very, very pretty man.” It was surely something he had heard before, but Nate wanted to see how he reacted to hearing it specifically from him.
Nate was not very good at video games, either. Devon chuckled, “Hey I guess I’m not the only one-“
>> ”For the record, you are also a very, very pretty man.”
“Heh,” his chuckle died on his lips, his mouth stretching into a wide, open-mouthed, and yes, surprised grin. Then Devon too smirked, an eyebrow raising, as he turned his attention away from the game. “You were playing earlier, weren’t you?” He shook his head and chuckled again, one arm crossing his bare chest and stomach as blush was rising in his cheeks, “I thought so but I dismissed it.”
Nate was a playful cad, then. His record had said as much though clearly not to the level he’d just admitted to. Mysterious and varied tastes indeed. A recent run in with a copy? Devon would have been worried for a moment had he still be advising the Creator. But not, they’d been friends and colleagues for a while no and the formality of their meetings was gone. Maybe Natalie knew some of this and it had given her pause? She didn’t seem the type to be judgmental of such things, but in a lover maybe.
Devon in turn wasn’t shy, but he wasn’t altogether proud. Often he felt reserved in most personal matters while still outwardly social, friendly. He honestly didn’t think of himself too often. He did certainly enjoy the penthouse he’d acquired. Hopefully they didn’t all think money had gotten to him. His salary wasn’t actually much from Haven and most of his inheritance was now tied up in it and his business. However, it was true he’d likely never worry for food, home, or nice clothes again. It occurred to Devon it was likely troubling conversation of attraction came down to how he presented himself and what he had. Was that a bad sign?
“Thanks though,” Devon nodded his head slowly, the grin slowly fading. He picked up his drink and took a heavy swallow. “You’ve certainly the rogue style, dark and good features. A handsome man though I don’t think I could ever look at you quite that way. But how much for you is attraction and how much has been developed affection?” he queried, putting down his now empty glass. “Really even mutant sexuality can skew the lines of study in human sexuality. But simply, some are just attracted but don’t really develop relationships.”
Things with Natalie were too volatile to focus on. They were entrenched in messy, undisclosed feelings for one another, yes, but that was not the only matter. Nate was told not to tell Devon or anyone, but Natalie was up for a potential position in Chicago that would be a tremendous opportunity. Things seemed to have potential between them, but at the end of the day, Nate knew to be careful with people who might have to move their lives at a moment’s notice. It was his M.O. once upon a time, after all.
For the time being, he could focus on the very pretty friend he was hanging out with for the night. Devon was not going anywhere, after all. ”Let’s just say my old lifestyle involved a lot of temporary companionship.” Hence, his introduction to Natalie. ”And I’ve always considered myself pretty open-minded when it comes to my companions.”
Typical of Devon, he viewed the world through psychology and philosophy. It was part of his charm, honestly. Sure, he had the kind of cheekbones you could cut diamond with, but it was equally attractive to know someone could converse with you on the deeper topics of the world. ”For me, personally, I might not say developed affection plays much of a role. I did not exactly spend much time building attachments over the years. Though, in recent years, I think I’ve learned the appeal. Not everything is about animalistic attraction and sexual encounters that nearly break beds,” he mused aloud, giving Devon some playful insight into the more sordid side of Nate’s life.
”But maybe that’s it for you? I’m sure a man like you would have no problem picking a bedmate. If we did not know each other so well, I am sure I would be susceptible to your fashion magazine good looks,” he teased. The thought had crossed his mind, but Devon was truly a friend, and that would affect how Nate saw him in other ways. ”Maybe you just need to find the person you click with before it all falls in place.”
Nate watched his character die on screen yet again and set his controller down with a frustrated sigh. ”I don’t think this is our forte, friend. Why don’t we just relax?” Nate leaned to the side, wrapping an arm around his friend. ”Snacks, a movie, and some friendly and entirely innocent cuddling? How does that sound?” Friendship did not have to be without some degree of affection, right?
