The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

[AV] That Unmistakable Feeling in Your Stomach (Jesse)
Becca was pregnant. They were having a baby. Jesse still marveled at those words bouncing around in his head. His hand wandered down to rest on Becca's belly, even though it was too early to really feel anything there, but it was an intimate gesture, something warm and real.
>>”Heh, yes, having a baby does mean I’m pregnant in this instance. Hence the pregnancy test. That’s… is that… I mean, is there a problem with this? With me being pregnant?”
"No!" Jesse backtracked, seeing concern in her face "No, no, just... Um." he sighed, kissing her on the forehead "The rest of the team might kill me for getting their boss pregnant."
It was a real concern, of sorts. Not the killing part, obviously, but the part where the X-leader was going to be out of commission waddling around for a few months instead of going on missions, in the middle of a rip in the space-time continuum...

Rebecca could not help but react to Jesse’s change in tone. She was content in the moment, but her natural instinct was always to assess risks and concern herself with what could go wrong. Whether she was a pessimist or a realist, Jesse’s apparent worry caught her off guard. It was not that he was upset they were having a child, right? He was so happy about it seconds earlier. Then what?
The truth came with a kiss on the forehead that calmed her racing thoughts. She chuckled, because Jesse had a point, and it was a silly one. The team was going to freak out at the news of their pregnancy, but knowing the odd family dynamic of the group, it was likely to come in the form of excitement and unavoidable hugs. ”Who are you kidding? They’ll love this.”
Of course, there was the more practical issue of her pregnancy Jesse was pointing out. She was the team leader, and pregnancy was not an asset on some of the missions X-Men went on. Of course, being a workaholic, her first response was, ”I mean, I’m sure there will still be some missions that I—”
The look she received from Jesse made it apparent that she could leave that sentence hanging. He would not be alone; the rest of the team was not going to let Rebecca join in on dangerous missions if they knew what she would be risking. ”I can… maybe take over Red Team Leading on missions?” She paused, before adding, ”Very, very far from the action?” The last thing she wanted was to leave the team completely for the duration of her pregnancy.
Still, even on Red Team, Rebecca was not going to be able to lead the team on the front lines. She often appointed temporary Team Leaders when the group had to split up, but actions were always run by her. She had been hesitant to give someone else the reins because of her admitted control issues, but it might have finally been time. (Mainly because it now seemed unavoidable.) ”Maybe I should finally appoint another Team Leader. I’ll only be half of one for a while…” Boy, that hurt her pride, but it was hard to argue the worthiness of the reason.
"Yeah, they will" Jesse admitted with a chuckle. Astrid would be excited, and Shivs would be beside herself... The whole team, in general, was more like family, even if not always completely functional. And a baby was hope, for a future. The first X-baby... Jesse was already feeling protective, more so than usual.
>>”I mean, I’m sure there will still be some missions that I—”
The look he gave her shut Becca up immediately. There was no way he was going to let his pregnant wife go into the field. On any mission. Even if he had to keep her in the mirror world for nine months... And she knew that.
>>”I can… maybe take over Red Team Leading on missions?... Very, very far from the action?”
"We'll talk about it" Jesse allowed hesitantly. Of course he knew his wife enough to know that she was not going to give up the X-men completely. It was not a job, after all. It was survival, for all of them.
>>”Maybe I should finally appoint another Team Leader. I’ll only be half of one for a while…”
"That'll be a decision for the whole team." Jesse pointed out "Later." he added with a small smile. They could allow themselves to savor the moment. Jesse sat down, pulling Becca down too into a more comfortable position, with his arms still wrapped around her.
"So... what do you think the kid will be like?..."

Jesse was smart. He was aware of the fight Rebecca would put up to remain a part of the X-Men, just as much as she was aware her spouse would do everything to keep her and their child safe. She wanted the same thing, but… the X-Men had been her life for well over a decade. How was she going to learn to step away and let people take the reins from her when she had been holding the reins with a vice-like grip for the past eight years?
Thankfully, as previously stated, Jesse was smart. They would have many discussions at a later date, and some might get heated. (She also tabled his comment about the team making the decision on how to appoint a Vice-Leader, because already had a candidate in mind.) There was no rush to worry about those details when they had more important things to talk about.
They were having a baby. The reminder made the worries and concerns fade into the background and soon, she was back to reveling in the exciting news. They sat down, and Rebecca nuzzled her head against Jesse’s chest, taking a quiet moment to think about the person they were bringing into the world.
”Looks-wise? I’m sure they’ll take after you,” she joked. It did make her curious whether the DNA Jesse provided was a lottery, or based on whichever of the many forms he took during their “reunion” when they conceived, or if the child would be a shapeshifter. Whichever answer would not matter. ”They’re gonna be precious. And maybe a bit of a troublemaker. We both had those phases,” she remembered with a shudder.
”But they’ll be good. And they’ll be happy.” Of all the things their child could be, that one felt like the only one that mattered and it was the one they could make happen.
Jesse gave his wife a look. It was a legit question - would the kid look the was he did when it was conceived, or be a shapeshifter, or...?
"The kid could literally look like anyone" he sighed. No jokes about taking after mommy or daddy here... or rather, that could be true in any case. Jesse chuckled. "... well, anyone with red hair." If they were lucky.
>>”They’re gonna be precious. And maybe a bit of a troublemaker. We both had those phases. But they’ll be good. And they’ll be happy.”
"You bet" Jesse smiled, kissing the top of her head "... and if they really are a shifter, we'll know soon... I was born like that. Which reminds me... we should get you to a doctor?"

Rebecca smiled, listening to Jesse contemplate what their child could look like. The possibilities really were endless, and she was prepared. ”Sorry, I was teasing a smidge. But really, if they’re born a shifter, I’ll love them just the same as if they’re born an elemental, or with a tail, or human.” She pictured the slim possibility that she and Jesse could end up with a human child, but she was fine with the idea. Hate was learned, not born; their child would not be taught hate.
As practical as the suggestion to visit the doctor was, it still made Rebecca groan. Despite working in a hospital, she was not a fan of taking trips to the doctor’s office herself. There was something about being poked and prodded (by anyone besides Jesse) that rubbed her the wrong way. It was for the good of the baby, she had to remind herself. She would do anything for them. ”I’ll call to set up an appointment with my obstetrician. In the meantime, Jules might begrudgingly give me a once-over. Maybe knowing I’m pregnant will thaw out that frozen heart.”
Rebecca gently rubbed her stomach with her hand. ”Who could be a mean b**** to you?” She smiled before she realized what was happening. ”Oh my God, I’m one of those women who talks to her stomach. That’s the woman I am now.” It was a far cry from the badass superheroine persona she touted so often.
>>”Sorry, I was teasing a smidge. But really, if they’re born a shifter, I’ll love them just the same as if they’re born an elemental, or with a tail, or human.”
"Ooh, a tail..." Jesse grinned. The X-gene worked in mysterious ways. Just because he was a shifter, and a mirrorwalker, and she could blast things with her eyes, did not mean that their kid would not have a tail. Or wings. Or the power to levitate. It was lottery, but at least it was never dull...
>>”I’ll call to set up an appointment with my obstetrician. In the meantime, Jules might begrudgingly give me a once-over. Maybe knowing I’m pregnant will thaw out that frozen heart... Who could be a mean b**** to you?”
Jesse chuckled as he watched Becca come to terms with the fact that she needed to go to a doctor... and also that the baby inside her belly needed special care and attention. She was already growing a whole new set of motherly instincts, at a rate that was alarming even to herself.
>>”Oh my God, I’m one of those women who talks to her stomach. That’s the woman I am now.”
"In other words, you are a pregnant woman. A very pretty one too." Jesse grinned at his wife, his hand joining hers on her belly "...we're gonna have to tell Astrid, too... I think we should tell her first."

She was, indeed, a pregnant woman. The idea still gave Rebecca a fluttery feeling that was hard to contain. She was renewing her maternal instincts and adding baby talk to her skillset. She was already a parent, but Rebecca had never experienced raising a child up from a baby onward. It was going to be a new, terrifying, thrilling experience.
But none of that changed the fact that she was already a mother. As he rested a hand on her stomach, Jesse pointed out that they were going to have to share the news with Astrid as soon as possible. Rebecca could not agree more. ”Definitely. You had to be the first one besides me to know, but Astrid has to be the second. She’s going to be a big sister; this will change her life.”
Of course, becoming a sister was not the only change Rebecca was worried about. ”I need to make sure she knows right out of the gate that us having a baby doesn’t make her any less my daughter. She’s our child as much as the baby will be.” She could picture it; Rebecca standing with Jesse’s arm wrapped around her. Her hand would be resting proudly on Astrid’s shoulder, and in her other arm, she would cradle the newest addition to her family.
”We’ve really grown a family for ourselves, Jesse,” she said softly. Rebecca was a far cry from the cagey orphan girl the X-Men found so many years ago.
They were sitting in the mirror, taking the little time they had to spend in physical contact, and for the first time, there was one other person, a tiny spark of life, with the two of them, something he gave up hoping for in the past two years. Jesse was still overwhelmed by the impossible miracle of it all.
>>”Definitely. You had to be the first one besides me to know, but Astrid has to be the second. She’s going to be a big sister; this will change her life... I need to make sure she knows right out of the gate that us having a baby doesn’t make her any less my daughter. She’s our child as much as the baby will be.”
"She is. And I think she will make a great older sister." Jesse smiled. Even though Becca was Astrid's mother years before he came along, he thought of the winged kid as his own. Becca did the brunt of the parenting, but Jesse backed her up wherever he could; it was also hard to spend less time with Astrid since stuck in the mirrors. He missed being the other full-time parent...
>>”We’ve really grown a family for ourselves, Jesse,”
"We have." Jesse chuckled, wondering at the statement "I mean... from smooth art thief to father of two. What have you done to me, woman?"

Rebecca and Jesse were on the same page: Astrid was every bit their child as the new baby would be. Astrid had been Rebecca’s child for a few years before the couple got married, but Jesse did all he could to be a proper parent to the young girl regardless. Watching the way he was with Astrid went a long way toward cementing the feelings Rebecca felt for her former thief. ”She will,” Rebecca agreed, before adding, ”And you’re going to be as great a parent to the baby as you are with her.”
It was funny to think of how far they had come together. Their first meetings were art theft busts with the two on opposite sides. Jesse had been some criminal that found a way to fluster Rebecca until he wormed his way into her head. She was the vigilante who started to change how Jesse saw things. On paper, she was sure they were just going to be two separate entities with unresolved sexual tension lingering. Neither expected to fall in love, and yet, they were now sharing an entirely domestic moment together.
Rebecca pressed her hand softly against Jesse’s cheek, smiling sheepishly. ”That was clearly my plan. I stalked some charming rogue of a thief so I could groom him into a family man. I clearly play the long game,” she added sarcastically.
After everything the couple had endured for two years, not to mention the many tragedies of Rebecca’s life, it felt like karma owed her a perfect moment and it finally delivered. ”Jesse… I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever been this happy.” Yes, Jesse was still trapped in the mirrors, and that was terrible, but suddenly it felt like a small blip of darkness amidst so much joy. She had Jesse in her life and they were setting out on a new chapter of their lives together; that was what mattered.
>> ”That was clearly my plan. I stalked some charming rogue of a thief so I could groom him into a family man. I clearly play the long game,”
"You are a criminal mastermind." Jesse grinned, hugging his wife and swaying a little. Ever since their first reunion in the mirrorworld (courtesy of which they were having this moment now, more likely than not), simple physical contact had returned into their ways of communication, and it could say a lot without words. Like right now, it was saying Jesse was not upset about being domesticated at all.
>>”Jesse… I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever been this happy.”
"Me neither." Jesse smiled softly, leaning in to kiss his wife gently. Then, after the appropriate number of minutes of savoring the moment, he could not help but add: "Make sure you remember this moment when we're gonna be changing mutant diapers at 3am."
