>> "I think there does need to be some degree of working together,"
Devon nodded appreciatively, glad they agreed on that. He nodded again on eliminating hatred and violence, though he often found the best way to combat abstracts was with education and legal action. Punishment for wrong doing and education, a global community of understanding for those doing right.
>> "We shouldn't feel ashamed of working for our own best interests even if we're working with humans in order to try and achieve them. Humans aren't going anywhere anytime soon."
“Indeed. It’s like targeting a black person seeking equal rights and being targeted for ‘serving his or her own interests.’ That’s ridiculous. We won’t criminalize that – or at least shouldn’t – though I guess I shouldn’t get started on my feelings there with the current government,” Devon sighed. “Same as the GLBT fighting for their rights.”
>> "How do you try to implement change? I mean real change, not just change in a person or two here or there."
“I think it takes a lot of work and many different things, but I find most true movements start with education and awareness. We need the government to back up what we want with law and legal action, not merely lip service to our ideals. We try to change those hearts and minds one at a time with individual example and volunteerism, which certainly Sanctuary helps accomplish,” he nodded, glancing at the door. “I’m hoping Haven helps empower other volunteers, activists, and brings together those that want to do more while encouraging education for all. We definitely need to work on the bigger picture too: fear and trust. The fear keeps us from trusting.”
