The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Rebecca was in her own little world of self-loathing, oblivious to Jesse’s transformation behind her. The whole botched endeavor screamed of her carelessness a year earlier. She was pursuing Jesse to give her renewed focus and keep her on task, and in the end, she gave into her base instincts. Tension built prior to her losing control with Geo, but being around her thief, (which she still thought of Jesse as,) it was like something clicked into place.
She was overthinking things. Hormones and adrenaline. That was all that clicked in place. She was still glowering when a “new” voice replied to her from behind, and she flinched like someone had snuck up on her. Her face had high cheekbones and sharp features, and her short blue hair fell over her eyes, but it was still Jesse. That would take getting used to, not that they would be around each other long enough for that to matter.
Jesse’s hand was on her shoulder, and as much as she wanted to pull away, she didn’t feel she had the energy. ”Yes, sleeping with shifty felons is new to me, as it turns out,” she grumbled, offense in her tone. She sighed, realizing how useless her anger was when she was just mad at herself. ”Well, then again, I guess I’m making a habit of making s****y decisions.” She was not around to prevent the fall of the X-Men, and now she could not apprehend a thief without putting herself on a radar. Her tenure as an X-Leader was going to be short, painful, and doomed to fail.
Hoping to focus on something else, Rebecca looked back to Jesse, surveying her. ”It’s a neat trick,” she admitted begrudgingly. ”Is this… er, is this your ‘real’ face, I guess?” If it was, she could certainly do a lot worse for herself than looking like some alt rock model.
It wasn't really that Jesse felt bad about their.., encounter, earlier. She was not the kind of person that would regret something that felt that good. But she could tell that Impact was very much confused by the whole thing, not to mention being caught by the owner of the mansion, and she was not quite done blaming herself yet. It wasn't about desire with her, really. It was about weakness.
>> ”Yes, sleeping with shifty felons is new to me, as it turns out. Well, then again, I guess I’m making a habit of making s****y decisions.”
Jesse pulled her hand back just in time that the redhead could not feel her wince. In the end, she was still just a thief. That was not news either, she had been used to being seen as a criminal from an early age. Rejected by multiple foster families, she knew that whatever face she used, people would see the same thing anyway. Might as well embrace it. Except, for some reason, Impact's bitter words still found a chink in her armor.
>>”It’s a neat trick. Is this… er, is this your ‘real’ face, I guess?”
"I don't have one." Jesse answered shortly, standing up to rummage through the closet. She was still underdressed, and she hoped she'd find one of those nice soft bathrobes. Also, she didn't have to look at Impact while talking. "I've always been a shifter, and never knew my family so I don't exactly know what I'm supposed to look like." she smirked a little, but it was less playful then before "I don't have a face, and you don't have a name. Don't we make a wonderful team..."

When Jesse’s hand pulled away from Rebecca’s shoulder, she felt the pit of her stomach deepen. This was all a game to “her thief,” sauntering through life with her charm and her freedom. That was what made sense, and it was important to remember that.
Except the atmosphere in the room seemed to change as Jesse stood from the bed. Rebecca was not naïve; criminals were people, and in many cases, they were people with troubled pasts. Even knowing that… no family, no identity… not even a face of her own. The way she confessed her past, it was a genuine, emotionally-vulnerable moment spoken in a cold tone. It was not her imagination; something had changed in Jesse’s demeanor.
Was it hurt?
Jesse proved, once again, that she had a way of reading the redhead like a book. The name did not fool him, regardless of how nice a name it was. Evidently, she was not a Michaela. While donning the bathrobe, Jesse made it a point to look away, and that distance turned her frustration to guilt. Standing up, she strode to Jesse and wrapped her arms around the fluffy robe material at her waist.
”Rebecca,” she admitted softly, pressing her forehead against Jesse’s back. ”I’m… I’m not turning you in.” The “prize” to her pursuit no longer felt rewarding. Jesse was one white collar art thief in a world filled with bigger problems. If the shapeshifter wanted to walk into the bathroom and leave through the mirror, she was not going to be the crime fighter to stop her.
Jesse knew she had probably gone too far, with the bitterness as much as with the confessions. She was still coming down from the high of endorphin and adrenaline, she told herself, otherwise she would not have gotten annoyed by being called criminal, or brought up her woe-is-me childhood. It was too late now, anyway. She shrugged into the bathrobe and tied the belt around her narrow waist, wondering what was going to happen next.
Two arms wrapped around her, and Jesse stiffened for a moment, not sure what to expect from the redhead at this point. Was she still trying to keep her from escaping?
>>”Rebecca. I’m… I’m not turning you in.”
Jesse chuckled a little, tension going out of her posture, and shook her head.
"Now that sounds better than Michaela." she smirked, turning around in Rebecca's arms to look down at her "See, I knew having a crappy childhood was going to come in handy at some point..." she muttered, smoothing some red hair out of the vigilante's face."So... which part bothered you more, the criminal thing or the female thing?"

Jesse lightened up again, not after hearing that she would be let free, but after Rebecca gave up her name. She genuinely wanted to believe that was the thing the blue-haired woman was waiting to hear. Maybe she was the victim of a long-game con to finagle freedom from a hopeless situation, but Rebecca was going to tell herself that was not the case, and maybe she was lucky enough to be right.
Regaining some of her trademark light-hearted charm, Jesse joked about her crappy childhood. ”I’ll let you know the first time mine comes in handy,” she joked, finally smiling again. She wanted to smile around Jesse. She wanted to just let things be easy around her.
Her head leaned into the touch of Jesse’s hand brushing her hair to the side. The question surprised her; was that what Jesse was worried about? ”Definitely not the female thing,” Rebecca replied quickly. It was clear after their… endeavor in the study that she had no problems with women. ”The thief thing… I don’t know. I mean, I get it. I just… I can’t exactly ask for a dinner date at six when I know you’ll be out stealing at nine.”
Rebecca moved closer and kissed Jesse’s cheek. Things felt different again. Not bad or cold, but not playful and heated. The moment between them felt… honest. ”I did not expect you. Any version of you. You do something to me,” she confessed, a hint of sadness in her admission. Maybe she was reading too far into what she felt in the narrow space between them, but Rebecca could not help but feel that they could have worked. In another world, living different lives, maybe that night would not have to be the end.
>>”I’ll let you know the first time mine comes in handy,”
Jesse noted the implication. Bad childhood, huh. Not that it was very surprising for mutants in this world to have one, and especially seemed to be one of the motivating factors for someone becoming a vigilante. Vigilante or criminal were two of the most enticing options for someone with powers. Still, she found herself wishing Rebecca had had a better experience than herself.
>>”Definitely not the female thing. The thief thing… I don’t know. I mean, I get it. I just… I can’t exactly ask for a dinner date at six when I know you’ll be out stealing at nine.”
"Please" Jesse scoffed, trying to keep the conversation light "I never go stealing until after midnight..."
Would she actually ask her out on a date though? Jesse had never really been on one. Flirting and one night stands, sure, she had a lot of those, but dates... those were not really a thing. Mostly for reasons mentioned above.
>>”I did not expect you. Any version of you. You do something to me,”
I did a lot of things to you, Jesse's mind responded, but she bit the comment back. There was something more serious in the confession, something not easily said, and she did not want to break it.
"Well... it's not like I expected you either." she noted finally "I've never really been into the vigilante thing... not that what you guys do is not awesome, I mean, it's just... I was too busy looking out for myself to look out for the rest of the world. How do you do it?" she asked, letting go of Rebecca to move over to the room's minibar and fish some drinks out "I think we deserve these."

Rebecca liked that Jesse gave the conversation levity. No one would ever accuse the X-Leader of being light-hearted or whimsical. It was nice to be around someone who brought that feeling back to her.
Logically, she was making one bad decision after another, but something in her pushed her forward regardless. She was already laying low from security or even police searching for her alter ego. They snuck their way into a hotel room, and Jesse was handing her a small bottle of wine from the minibar. She held the neck of the cold bottle daintily so her heat did not spread through the small amount of alcohol. Minibars were thievery in their own right, providing small portions for jacked-up prices. For once, the good girl would not object.
After the art of thievery was brought into question, Jesse countered and asked about how she could shoulder all the weight and responsibility that came with vigilantism. ”I don’t know,” she admitted. Rebecca had been with the X-Men for most of her life. It always seemed like the place for her. She knew why she did it, but it was hard to find the words. ”I guess it’s because the world is crap. And there are too many mutant kids with crappy childhoods. But… the X-Men helped one of those poor, homeless, ginger kids.” She still remembered what it was like after her parents died, but before Arclight found her. The memories were bleak, and grew less clear every day, but she doubted she’d ever forget completely.
”It sounds stupid,” she admitted, brushing a strand of hair from her mismatched eyes, ”But I’m just hoping if I make the world better, then it’s even the tiniest bit better for those kids.”
She clinked the bottom of her bottle to Jesse’s drink and took a sip, tasting the sweetness of the rosé on her tongue. She pulled Jesse closer to the bed by the cloth belt of her robe. Her lips met Jesse’s again, but her kiss was softer than those shared at the Mansion. ”We deserve so much more than these.”
It was not exactly an easy question to ask - why did anyone become a vigilante? Or a thief? Or anything else? Jesse got some wine out of the minibar, because if they were going to be talking about childhoods and life goals, they deserved some alcohol. Especially after the night they had...
>>”I don’t know. I guess it’s because the world is crap. And there are too many mutant kids with crappy childhoods. But… the X-Men helped one of those poor, homeless, ginger kids.”
Poor ginger. Jesse sighed, looking at Rebecca as they both drank. It would have made a whole lot of sense for the two of them to bond over being lonely former street brats, but if Jesse really wanted to be honest about it, that was not what they had drawn them together in the first place. It was a common point, sure, but it was not their personality, or their chemistry. Those were harder to explain.
>>”It sounds stupid. But I’m just hoping if I make the world better, then it’s even the tiniest bit better for those kids.”
She really was one of those good-guy vigilantes. Making the world a better place. As far as Jesse was concerned, the world sucked big time, and she had never been sure that anyone could change that. Even with superpowers. But Rebecca believed that, apparently, and Jesse could not help but admire her for it.
>>”We deserve so much more than these.”
Rebbeca tugged her closer, and Jesse did not resist. The kiss was softer too, less heated and less desperate, but somehow... somehow it still managed to make her pull the redhead closer, looking for warmth to share. It was an unfamiliar feeling. Confusing, vulnerable, and intoxicating. It would keep them warm for days.
