The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

There were some sounds of groaning, rummaging, and shifting behind him, and Gawain grew more curious by the minute. He kept himself from turning around too soon, even though there was a good chance that the shifter would be gone, and all the spare clothes with it, by the time things quieted down. That's what he would have done back in the day, anyway.
Finally the stirring ceased, and Gawain nodded to himself.
"Imma turn around now" he announced, before he turned slowly, trying to mask his curiosity about whatever sight might greet him. Once he saw the now-human figure in the new clothes, a grin lit up his face.
"Oh, it's you" he said cheerfully, waving a hand "You made it after all, huh? Welcome to the Mansion. My name's Gawain. But I already said that..."
Adder held himself steady, not fully upright but enough so that he didn't look completely like he was about to bolt even if he was that close to it -
guy-who-smelled-like-not-cop-girl was talking like he recognized him, but the only way for him to recognize him would have to be that he knew what not-cop-girl experienced so either his mutation was tied to her or he was her but he hadn't picked up more of her scent when he went back therefore he wasn't just associating with her, which meant -
that this was the not-cop-girl he'd stolen from, and who'd drawn Aura's attention to him and he'd
he had shown himself in both his forms to not-cop-girl-guy-face-shifter and accepted clothing from the not-cop-face-shifter without fully knowing it. Maybe he should've told Cafas he'd run into a mansion-x-person before, Cafas would have known about this and could have given him more of a heads up, even though Adder didn't want to need that help; he'd picked up on the similarity on his own, sure, but that wasn't the same as actually identifying them -
He was locked in place caught up in the storm of his head, and the not-cop was probably staring at him by now but Adder wasn't going to meet his eyes to find out. Digging his toes into the grass, he shifted his weight to remind himself that yes, he could, he still had control and could move at will. Breathe.
Gawain watched the guy tense up; he might have gotten around to give the Mansion a visit, but that did not mean that he'd resolved to give it an actual chance. And since their first meeting did not go... quite splendidly, it was no wonder that wolf boy felt awkward around an X-man. The question made Gawain chuckle, and he tilted his head, keeping the safe distance from the visitor for both of their comfort.
"Enhanced sense of smell?" he guessed; it would have made sense with the canine form "Yeah, kinda. I'm a gender shifter. Dude one day, gal the other. You met me as Maya. Today's a Gawain day. Same brilliant personality, though. At your service." he grinned "Relax, I'm not gonna arrest you. The Mansion is a safe haven. Unless you threaten someone, that is."
There were rules, after all, even if they were a little nebulous.
Not-cop-face-shifter laughed. Adder flinched, though he contained it well and mostly kept it to a momentary haze of almost-becoming-fur across the back of his neck and shoulders. Breathe.
"More than you'd expect," he muttered, slowly letting some of the tension ease up and flow away like water on his guard-hairs. Technically speaking, he didn't know if his nose worked differently from street dogs - there were things that they never reacted to in the same way humans never reacted to smells, but which leapt out in unbelievable vividness to him - because he was wolf and not dog or because he was mutant and not dog. Maybe because mutant wolf?
Not a train of thought to share with other people, especially not-cop-face-shifter who made jokes about arresting him. He set his teeth and reminded himself firmly that he could outrun the not-cop here just fine. There was nothing shiny, just trees and grass and dirt and birds, unless not-cop-face-shifter could use reflections in eyes, so it would just be outrunning by foot.
"Like I'd bother going out of my way to threaten someone," he muttered. "Good way to get dead, that."
>>"Like I'd bother going out of my way to threaten someone. Good way to get dead, that."
Well then. Gawain had seen some chips on shoulders in his time, but this one was threatening to take the cake. What was this guy's deal? He was in the Mansion, sneaking around in his wolf form none the less (not that he had not snuck in via mirrors the first time), but even after repeat shows of goodwill and friendhsip, he was still not letting up. Gawain felt a pang of worry, wondering what happened to the guy that left him this cautious and ready to bolt.
"So... do you want the whole tour?" he ventured, nodding at the building "I'm kinda the greeter on rotation today anyway. And we've got food if you're hungry."
Not-cop-face-shifter's mood seemed to shift a little bit, and while it did make the guy a bit less threatening it didn't put Adder at ease at all. Plus he seemed to think that Adder had only just arrived. Should he let him keep thinking that? It was another layer between them, deflecting all the nasty dangerous stuff that went with attachment and familiarity.
He didn't want to spend too much time with not-cop-face-shifter either, though, so another tour was definitely out. Plus wandering around like that would probably draw nosy noisy kids who didn't know how to keep their fingers to themselves, and rich adults didn't take well to him even snapping at kids. Human or wolf snapping. He wouldn't have to if they taught their brats properly.
"I know where the food is," he said by way of tour-dismissal, but almost immediately figured that that wouldn't be enough to actually dismiss not-cop-face-shifter. "And there are too many people inside. So no."
>>"I know where the food is. And there are too many people inside. So no."
Okay, so wolf kid was not at all keen on doing the rounds. Gawain sighed, shrugging at him. He had really done everything he could do; he was nice and friendly and stuff, it wasn't his fault the guy was not meeting him halfway. Chips on shoulders that size belonged to Miss T's jurisdiction.
"Well, good." he said finally "You know where the food is then. Make yourself at home. My office is down the hall to the right, if you need anything, you know where to find me."
That was all he could do, really. It would take time, and maybe someone who had a less awkward first encounter with the guy, to take care of the rest.
Adder's ears leaned back at not-cop-face-shifter's shrug. It wasn't followed with anything aggressive, though, so when he moved backwards it at least wasn't an outright bolt. He made note of the office location just so he could avoid it later, and decided to avoid the kitchen for a while as well just in case not-cop-face-shifter decided to try to catch him there.
Then, without another word, he turned to the side and trotted towards the rest of the trees, ears bent back towards not-cop-face-shifter and pace a practiced-awkward split between a human jog and a wolf lope.
