Character
Personality: Claire is an extrovert who warms up quickly to new people. Her moods can change with mercurial speed, happy one minute, and ready to punch someone the next but ready to forgive them another minute after that. While she often comes off as flighty, she can be very serious, and is a good student. She's a lousy liar, and avoids doing so whenever she can; just not her style. If caught in regards to something, she has a tendency to say "who, me?" hoping to deflect the situation. To anyone who knows her, this is as good as an admission of guilt.
She is rather trusting, and that tendency can also make her a bit gullible. If she says 'Really?', all one need do is reel her in...
Hobbies/ Interests: She does various forms of dance, and loves to hike in the mountains of her home state. She likes to fish, but won't touch a worm. Ever. They're yucky. She started doing Origami out of necessity, since she couldn't use her power without it! Job or part time job and description: Working as a waitress; full-time college student. Fears/ phobias/ concerns:Claire worries about people getting along, and what's going to happen to her world. She's afraid of spiders, though not at a phobia level. That's reserved for Moose. Yes, she's phobic about moose, and freezes if she sees a live one. This has happened to her back home in Colorado. Claire has asthma, and always carries an inhaler to control it. Special talents: (not related to mutation) Breaking electronics. She and her phone don't get along. Her father emigrated from Scotland, and her father's side of the family still reside there. Because of growing up around this, she can speak with a very convincing Scottish accent as a result, and understand someone that talks with one, regardless of how thick it is.
Morality
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: (please explain) Claire is definitely Good, though she's had her moments of dumb 'why did I DO that?!?'. She's a regular church-goer, and has a pretty deep faith.
Mutations
Mutation description: Origami Constructs. Claire can make an origami model, and then cause it to grow into a 'real' example of whatever she made. A crane becomes a real crane, able to fly and do what birds do. A paper sword becomes a real sword that one could use. She can't make objects with moving parts (like a bicycle or a blender) however. Internal combustion engines are right out.
She can make animated objects (animals, people, insects, etc) and inanimate ones. A paper table model becomes a real table for instance. They have all the attributes a real example would have; strength, toughness, hardness, etc. They always look rather angular and paper-like however. A paper person might fool someone in a dark room, but they're obviously not 'real' in normal light. Paper creations grow to one foot per inch of the original model, or to normal size for that thing, whichever is less. A 4" tiger model would only become a 4 foot tiger - get bigger paper! She has some control over this, and could make a large or small version of something as long as the one foot per inch of model rule isn't violated. She could make giant hamsters for instance. Inanimate objects grow to a maximum of 2 feet per inch of model. She can't make anything much bigger than a car however, regardless of the paper size. Making large objects is fatiguing and making large animated objects can be even more draining on her. Constructs mimicking humans are the most draining of all.
While she can't see through their senses, she has a telepathic link to her animated constructs that gives her a general idea of what the construct is experiencing. "People" can give actual thoughts, where animals are only empathic feelings. It may be this higher level of awareness that makes human-like constructs so fatiguing, though more useful as well.
Animated constructs become so through, essentially, a small piece of herself that is added by her power at the time it is created and animated. Doing this has odd side effects on her however; she may have an overwhelming craving for fish after making a crane, or simply can't rest until she writes a haiku after making a samurai warrior. These things don't have to happen immediately, but if she procrastinates too much, she can reach a point where she’s so distracted she won't be able to animate further constructs until she takes care of things.
Strengths: Weaknesses and Limitations: She can do 3 animated constructs, or 6 inanimate ones or a combination. She could do 1 animated and 4 inanimate for instance, but not 1 animated and 5 inanimate. She'd have to release something first. She obviously must have paper to work with. While she could make some models ahead of time, they need to be stored carefully, as if damaged, that damage will carry over to the construct. A tear in a bird's wing would result in an unusable wing unless very tiny for instance.
Currently, from memory she knows how to fold a crane, a cat, a paper box (useful as a table, or even a tent if a door is made in it), a bat (as in the animal), a boat and several types of paper gliders. She might be able to use these kind of like a hang glider, but is afraid to test this for obvious reasons (possible death). Even if they work, directional control would be very rudimentary – lean!
UPDATE: She has added a tiger and dinosaur to her fold-from-memory list of creatures. Both are somewhat complex and she prefers to make them ahead of needing them. She's also pretty set on a glider that she's just sure would work! If she could find a pilot... She has a paper knife design that she can do quickly and could grow to sword size in a pinch. A crumpled paper ball makes for a great paper rock or even boulder that could stop a car or truck.
While models generally obtain the properties of the object they become, they remain as vulnerable to fire as anything paper. They repel water about the same as a paper cup, but will eventually get soggy. People last for 24 hrs (max), while animals can last for a maximum of three days and inanimate objects for a week. She can release them at any time, and when they expire (for whatever reason) they turn to dust.
She can maintain objects out to about a mile. Her emotional state effects this, calm allowing a little further, while angry, flustered, panicked and such might cut her range to half that. Objects turn to dust and are lost if they get beyond her range to control them.
Maintaining calm is very important as strong emotions and especially negative emotions (fear, panic, etc.), also tends to have greater side effects and be more fatiguing. Unfortunately, Claire isn't the greatest example of calm...
Every construct takes a certain amount of energy, and the bigger they are, the higher this drain is at creation. Also, the smarter they are, the more they suck energy out of her at creation. A paper human construct is much more tiring than a paper dog or cat. This is a one-time thing; after creation, the construct doesn't require any more energy from her. Big animals and people created in quick succession may tire her for a bit though. Compare to running up a couple of flights of stairs per object. General physical fitness helps with this.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: (Strength/Speed/Reflexes/Stamina/Flexibility) Claire has a dancer's body due to practicing various forms such as jazz, tap and ballet. She's strong for her size, and a pretty good distance runner, but all well within human norms for a girl her size. Fighting Style: What's over there! Pffft! Seriously, since coming to Xavier's, Claire has had mandatory self-defense training. Her preference however, is still to avoid a fight. Fighting Style Pros/Cons: (if applicable) Only works if you run faster than whoever is after you.
History Of Your Character Claire grew up in Boulder, Colorado and had a pretty normal childhood. Well, as normal as one would be in Boulder, which is a rather odd place that only got weirder with the addition of mutants.
As far as her mutation, Claire was a rather late bloomer, having only discovered her power recently, and quite by accident. It's probable that it has been there, lying dormant for some time. Her father is a respected Oncologist, and they are living in the New York area on a temporary basis while he's working on a two-year project. Claire had been attending a private school in the area that caters to business people and dignitaries, when she became friends with Nyoko 'Cherry' Fujimoto. Cherry's parents are also working in New York for a Japanese firm, and her hobby was Origami - paper folding.
Cherry had made a paper cat, which Claire was holding in her lap and more or less wishing it were real as she stroked its head. To her shock, the 'cat' suddenly grew to life-size – and started to purr! She wished it would go away, and the thing turned to dust, right in her lap. She immediately vowed to Never, Ever, touch one of Cherry's models again. Ever.
Luckily, her curiosity got the better of her, and she and Cherry have been experimenting with this new skill ever since.
While Cherry is the picture of peace and tranquility (taught by her family from a young age) Claire, well, not so much.
Cherry is very amused by this new-found talent her friend has, and is doing what she can to help her to understand it, as well as teaching her the basics of origami.
**update** Claire was away for about a year with her Scottish relatives. Something about a castle and a ghost or something. Ask her about it if you want. Anyways, while there, she was strictly Forbidden from using her Power by her parents. Apparently they didn't want to freak out that side of the family. As such, she's still pretty inexperienced with her actual power, though she did get to practice her paper folding while she was there. She just couldn't do anything to the items. Okay, okay, there was the Rat incident, but nobody saw that! We're not going to talk about the oubliette either. Just... forget about it.
Roleplay Where did you learn about this site?: Think I found this via Google actually. Do you have any other characters on MRO, if so who: n/a Sample RP:
Claire picked up Cherry's latest model and examined it closely. "How do you do this? I mean, this is so cool looking!" Claire gushed. "I can teach..." Cherry offered, adjusting the tail slightly so as to look more realistic. "I wish it were real... I've got a test next hour, and cats are very calming" she said, stroking a finger down the paper head while imagining a cat purring in her lap. That’s when Claire’s whole world turned upside down, as the cat suddenly grew, and began to purr as it lay in her lap. It was paper, but it had suddenly grown to the size of a house cat! She could feel the weight in her lap!
Her ice blue eyes going huge in alarm, and Claire froze for a second, but yelled "Go away!" a moment later. As quickly as it had appeared, the thing vanished, leaving a layer of dust in the redhead's lap. "Cherry... what just happened?" Claire whispered, still looking very alarmed. Cherry, on the other hand, looked rather intrigued. "I...do not know. Perhaps we should do again?" she offered. "Umm, no. Not happening. Ever." Claire replied. She was about to go on, and Cherry was getting a bored 'here we go again' look, when the bell rang. "Crud! I gotta get to class. See you at lunch?! We, ah, we, crud!" the redhead said, hurrying away to class.
Her Japanese friend watched her go, a smile spreading on her face. 'If a talking alien dog were to land at our school' she thought, 'it would be Claire that he'd choose to sit down and talk to. I'm sure of it.’
