The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Well... it's isn't a perfect solution..." but it sounded like nothing would be. "Wait." Maya fished around in her purse for a moment and got out a card. She handed it to him with two hands. "Here. If you need to scream or something..."

Ryden blinked as she held out a business card. He scanned the title, and nodded slightly. Pulling out his wallet, he stuck the card inside, then pulled out one of his own. It was nothing fancy just the newspapers logo and his name listed as a freelance writer.
"Guess if you need something broken." He shrugged, flashing a quick smile then taking another deep drink of his coffee. The sensation helped drown the tingles from talking. "I'd avoid inviting me around for karaoke, though." He added. The spoon gave a warble to emphasize the point.
"Oh no. I can break things well enough on my own. I just—" Oh. He meant his power. He was in deep with the self-deprecation. Poor guy had it rough, yeah, but he needed to cheer up.
Unfortunately, they weren't friends enough for Maya to feel comfortable saying so. She fidgeted with her cup's saucer instead. "I just meant that if you need a break from being careful... or something. It's okay to lean on someone else. I mean, not that you're not capable on your own, but you don't have to be miserable... not that you're miserable. I'm doing a bad job at cheering you up, aren't I?" She cringed because this was New York. Where people got offended for you holding the door for them or implying that they are not self-sufficient.
Maya quickly took a sip of coffee and wrinkled her nose. It had cooled to the point where she couldn't feel it anymore. It made things a tad less appetizing. "Uhm. Karaoke isn't really my thing anyway."

Ryden sighed, pushing the hair from his face. Even if they weren't exactly friends, the stranger across the table was one of the only people it seemed he could talk to lately, in a literal and more emotional sense. While she seemed concerned about saying the wrong thing, Ryden felt he couldn't make things worse at this point. What was he going to do, scare her off? If his voice hadn't done that already, he wasn't sure much really would.
"I'm a writer. Words are just... my life. I feel like my powers are taking something away from me." The spoon cracked a little bit, and he wondered if he should offer to pay for it enough. Casualty of conversation.
"You're not doing a bad job, I'm just...cornered." he rubbed his forehead with his hand and frowned slightly. "I'm sorry, I know it's all coming out very meloncholy right now. I just... frustrated." He wondered if she regretted sitting down now. The spoon had split into two pieces now, his voice taking turns rattle the shards.
"Uhm. Not to split hairs, but as a writer you still have a voice in the written word. And if you're published, it's a more lasting voice then most." She shrugged. So. That was something at least.
> "You're not doing a bad job, I'm just...cornered."
Maya nodded. She knew that sort of feeling. She shouldn't with the powers given to her, but she did.
Too bad the air elemental didn't have any adapted humans on speed dial. They would do a much better job of this.
"I regret that you are in a difficult situation, Mr. Ryden. Is there anything... else going on?" Something more happy? Maybe?

Ryden shrugged a little. She was right; he did have a voice on paper. But out loud it still felt frustrating not being able to share the same level of eloquence. It was his own personal problem, something he just wasn't getting over like maybe he should. Running a hand through his hair he felt bad dragging her into his little pitty party. That was really all it was.
"Can't say there really is much else going on." The spoon gave a little pop and wobbled in emphasis. "Just been doing freelance work. Nothing exciting." Gosh he sounded like a mental case. Maybe he needed a therapist to sit down with him instead. He nodded towards her. "What about you? You must do something more interesting than consoling random depressed strangers in coffee shops."
"I guess that's the hazard of being a responsible adult during the summer. No magical three months off of work. No trip to Grandmother's house for turkey or other holidays. None of that. Nope. Not for us poor working folk. Nope."
Hm. Maybe she should grab that napkin holder? Maya discreetly pulled it into her lap. Would that help keep it from cracking or wobbling like the spoon had?
About her? Well, now it was like they were having a normal, polite conversation! "I work at a bookstore and I have a two year old at home. Pretty much takes all my time. He's super smart. I am both proud and annoyed since he keeps figuring out how to get into things. I could be that annoying lady who forces a picture on you, if you don't mind." Maya grinned, clearly having a good time even if Ryden was not. "Or not."
No wedding ring, but... hey. This way New York. There were plenty of unwed mothers running around.

Ryden was still sort of in a grumpy mood, but it was hard not to smile as Maya talked. He chuckled slightly, and it only caused a mild tremor from the napkin holder this time. As she talked about her kid, the smile managed to stay for a little bit this time.
"I don't mind seeing pictures." Pause...pausing was important. He could feel his throat tingling from all the talking. "I always liked kids...although...I try to avoid them sometimes because...well...parents don't like things exploding around them." He remarked sheepishly. As nice as she was, he doubted even his new companion would enjoy a conversation around him if it meant the risk of objects blowing up by her kid. He at least had some control over what broke though, so he never really accidentally hurt someone. Startled? Yes. But never injured.
