The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It took a bit of convincing, but Evelyn managed to talk Mirror into going with her to the wedding. Not that she really wanted to go anyway, but it was for a close friend of her parents and they expected her to be there. Lately they had been bearing down on her about being a proper daughter and not giving them a bad image, yada yada. With the tension growing high she felt it was better not to push things. But that didn't stop her from asking if she could bring a date.
Somehow, she felt fate had planned it so it would be a Maya day.
Oh well, it was just going to make that much more of a statement.
She was dressed in a small white dress with black leggings, which was semi-formal enough she felt it would work. If it didn't, well, her parents could just add it to the list of everything else she did wrong about this. She was grateful she wasn't going alone though. At least with Maya it would be more bearable.
Reaching the mirror-walkers room, she reached out a hand and gently knocked on the door. "Hey, you ready to go?" She called, glancing down at the watch on her hand. They still had plenty of time, but the longer she waited here the bigger the knot in her stomach seemed to get.
Because nothing could ever go wrong with coming out to your parents at their friend's wedding. Double coming out, since the girlfriend in question is mutant. Triple coming out, even, counting that they did not know Mirror existed. Yet.
Maya sighed as she took a look at herself in the mirror. She did not own any formal female attire, but that was the least of her problems - good thing about living in a boarding school, one could always rustle up something in a short amount of time. She was wearing a short grey dress with black hems, sandals with short heels, and it was the girliest she had felt in her entire life.
"*** it." she muttered, picking up her purse and moving to the door top open it. Seeing Eve in her white dress made her smile, despite the bad feeling in her stomach about the whole plan.
"You look nice" she said, leaning over to kiss Eve on the cheek, the place with the least risk factor of smearing mascara all over the place "Ready to go steal the spotlight?"
The door opened, and Evelyn felt a small smile cross her face. She blushed slightly at the compliment, but she nodded back at Maya's own outfit. "You look really good too. Hopefully it's not too much torture for you to wear." She added as an afterthought. She knew Maya wasn't exactly big on dressing up, in fact, she wasn't sure she'd ever seen the mirror-walker in anything particularly feminine. But if nothing else this had been a good excuse for it and it was definitely a different look. But a good one.
As they headed for the front door, Evelyn made a face at Maya, and rolled her eyes at the question. "I'm not sure I'm every ready for these shindigs. But if my parents are going to drag me to them, they're going to have to learn to realize I'm not going to change to make them happy anymore. I'm glad your coming." She looked at the other female, and tried to get the knot out of her gut. She needed the moral support, even if it might create drama.
>>"You look really good too. Hopefully it's not too much torture for you to wear."
"I'll live" Maya smirked as they walked down the hallway "I'll just pretend it's an undercover mission."
>>"I'm not sure I'm every ready for these shindigs. But if my parents are going to drag me to them, they're going to have to learn to realize I'm not going to change to make them happy anymore. I'm glad your coming."
"Well, I'm always up for messing with the family" the mirrorwalked grinned, taking Eve's hand and giving it a gentle squeeze "I'm glad you asked me to come. It sounds like somethin' you shouldn' do alone."
For the special occasion, mirrorwalking was out of the question. Maya had borrowed one of the cars from the Mansion's garage. She had gained some practice in driving lately, mostly during the riots when everyone had to be everywhere at once.
"So, what do I gotta be prepared for?" she asked as they got in the car "Give me the mission briefing, capt'n."
Undercover mission.... Part of her wished that was what it was. Sometimes dealing with all the monsters she encountered around mutants wasn't half as bad as dealing with her family. Or their friends. Their friends were a different sort of creature. All dolled up and fake faced... She squeezed Maya's hand back gratefully.
She didn't know why these people made her feel the way they did. Maybe it was because she grew up with them towering above her, judging her and tilting their noses up to her. She was smarter than them all. She could follow their conversations and study their movements and if she wanted she could have spilled all their dirty secrets out for the world to see. For the most part she had been fairly good at keeping those things to herself growing up. But actions could still sting. Especially when you could never forget them.
Getting to the car, Evelyn slipped into the seat and smoothed out her skirt, chuckling slightly. "The mission? Infiltrate a party of high class stuck up aristocrats, make a statement to a pair of judgmental anti-mutant parents...grab some snacks. I hear they have good food. And if we get bored I can tell you all the dirty little secrets the echoes pick up." She tossed in with a somewhat mischievous smirk.
>>"The mission? Infiltrate a party of high class stuck up aristocrats, make a statement to a pair of judgmental anti-mutant parents...grab some snacks. I hear they have good food. And if we get bored I can tell you all the dirty little secrets the echoes pick up."
"I am not sure about infiltration" Maya smirked as she drove, following the route she had previously looked up "I don't think I'll ever fit in at a place like that. With that said, making a statement is definitely going to happen." she grinned. Hello, parents, your daughter is a mutant, and half a lesbian. Deal with it.
It did not take long to find the event venue: a long queue of luxury cars marked the driveway and the parking, and colorful dresses blossomed everywhere. Maya frowned as she parked the car.
"All right, lady, here we go. Take me to your world."
As they pulled up to the party, Evelyn felt herself automatically sitting a little straighter and smoothing her skirt again. It a way, her upbringing had been a little like training. She just had to push her nervous energy down, keep a cool head and make the best of an awkward situation. For some reason the party itself was what made her the most nervous. Having her parents find out she was dating a girl half the time wasn't such a big deal to her. That was somewhat of a more normal family disagreement they'd have to get through. She was more focused on the repercussions for asserting herself like this. She was pretty certain her parents wouldn't be pleased.
She pushed open the door, flashed one last smile to Maya, and stepped out. The echoes had already honed in on two very tense looking figures over under the gazebo.
Not pleased seemed like an understatement.
"I think it's more of a 'take you to my past' than necessarily 'my world' at this point... I have a strange feeling my parents aren't going to be inviting me to many of these events in the future." She mused aloud, and offered an arm to Maya. Back straight, head up. Her body language would not be ashamed to be here with Maya. She cared about the mirror-walker, and they could stare or scoff all they wanted.
If only the echoes weren't so loud... It was like hearing a room full of disapproving whispers. As they started across the lawn she had to pull on her battle training to direct the echoes to the buffet table and force them to stay there. She was going to know an aweful lot about what was sitting there by the time they were done with this. Either that, or she was going to have a lot of unwanted information to drown out.
Mrs. Summers broke away from the group, and her steps were sharp and pointed as she moved over to where Evelyn was. Her smile was all too sunny sweet, teeth clenched a bit too tightly as she met her daughter. "Evelyn, dear. I see you've brought a...guest."
"Her name is Maya, and you said I could bring a date. This is my date." Evelyn said firmly. The corner of her mother's mouth twitched slightly, and she ran her hands down the side of her dress.
"I see...Does...Maya, have any ...Is--"
"She's a mutant too. Gender shifter. Dad's looking for you, and Maya and I are going to go politely congratulate the happy couple." Evelyn flashed a quick smile, and steered her companion away from the speechless figure. The sunny smile had completely withered from her face at the word 'mutant', and transformed into an unappealing look of confused horror as the sentence continued. Now she just stood, heels slowly sinking into the grass, trying and failing to put back on her fake smile.
The happy couple accepted the thanks, although there was a trace of confusion in their expressions as they watched Mr. and Mrs. Summer his and argue in the background.
Pleasantries aside, Evelyn migrated towards the buffet table. There were a number of food items set out, from cold cuts to chips and dips, and an open bar wasn't far from that. Evelyn wasn't a drinker, but the more echos she picked up, the more tempting the collection looked. She didn't know what alcohol would do to her powers, but if there was a chance it could shut them up, it was tempting.
"I'd say we're off to a good start..." She mused aloud, glancing over at Maya.
>>"I think it's more of a 'take you to my past' than necessarily 'my world' at this point... I have a strange feeling my parents aren't going to be inviting me to many of these events in the future."
"Well that would be a pity" Maya chuckled as she took Eve's arm and walked with her "Look at all the free food..."
The mirrorwalker did not need echoes to tell the lady that held some resemblance to Eve was her mom, and barely even needed to look to tell she was not happy with her daughter's choice of a date.
>>"Evelyn, dear. I see you've brought a...guest."
>>"Her name is Maya, and you said I could bring a date. This is my date."
>>"I see...Does...Maya, have any ...Is--"
>>"She's a mutant too. Gender shifter. Dad's looking for you, and Maya and I are going to go politely congratulate the happy couple."
Maya bit the inside of her mouth really hard to keep herself from cracking up. The look on the woman's face was priceless.
"Nice to meet you ma'am" she smiled a charming as Eve was pulling her away. The happy couple seemed less concerned about Eve showing up with another girl as a date, and Maya did her best to stay polite. For now.
>>"I'd say we're off to a good start..."
"I'd say we are off to a terrific start" Maya grinned, already eyeing the food on the tables "And you are currently the bravest person I know. Although I doubt that I made a good first impression with your family..."

Evelyn couldn't help smiling at Maya, pushing back some of the nervous energy she had and picking up one of the paper plates. She shook her head and put a few pieces of lunch meat and chips on it, glancing back at her parents. The echoes fizzled with the intensity of their gaze.
"My parents are almost impossible to make a good impression with at this point.... I think as long as I'm a mutant and anyone is ok with that they wouldn't approve." she ate a chip and chuckled slightly. "I really don't think I'm that brave. If I was I wouldn't have appeased them for so long... "
It was around that time when one of the waitresses on duty migrated over and offered the two mutants something to drink. Evelyn, with echoes still humming as her parents migrated closer, felt herself nodding and ordering one of the fruity sounding drinks off the list in and almost reflexive way. Watching the waitress drift away she glanced at Maya.
"In hindsite that might be a bad idea....but it sounded really good now..." She mused nibbling a piece of ham.

"You'll soon get the hang of pissing them off don't worry" Maya smirked, kissing Eve on the cheek that earned them quite a few looks "It's kinda fun."
Eve ordered a drink, and Maya ordered one too.
>>"In hindsite that might be a bad idea....but it sounded really good now..."
"Knock yourself out." Maya chuckled "I'm the designated driver anyway. I don't think having a drink will make anything worse at this point..."
She looked around.
"So, what's next? I've never been to a wedding outside the Mansion..."

Evelyn was fairly certain the echoes were picking up on more feedback than normal today. Her emotions were on edge, and subconsciously she kept honing in on the behavior of the people around her. It was amusing on the one hand to make people irritated or squirm, but on the other hand, she felt a little offended by it. Who cares who she was with, or what she did, or what her powers were? These social events were impossible...
When the waitress brought back the drinks she tipped the girl and took Maya's advice, letting herself take a swing as the sweet liquid moved down her throat, living a faint bitter aftertaste of liquor.
>>So what's next?
"Well they'll conduct their "I do"s, unless this is one of those shindigs where we get some of the fun "I don't"s, then they open their presents everyone parties and we can sneak out of here with food. I think we got about ten minutes before the ceremony starts..." The echoes flickered back towards her parents, then to Maya. She smiled, and gave a smirk. "So what else do you think would piss my parents off, since we're already off to such a good start?"

It sounded pretty much the same as the mutant weddings Maya had attended in the Mansion, minus the random displays of mutant powers. So far. She would have been more excited if she actually knew the happy couple... oh well.
>>"So what else do you think would piss my parents off, since we're already off to such a good start?"
"I can think of a few things" Maya grinned, the trickster spirit lighting up her eyes "But first off: food."
Picking up a cookie from a plate she offered a bite to Eve, holding her with one arm around her waist.
"Always start with the free food. Learned that a long time ago. Oh look, here's the drinks..."

Food. Food was certainly a good option. She smiled and accepted a bite of the cookie, turning the drink over in her hand and taking another drink. Cookies and alcohol had a strange taste when mixed together, but it wasn't awful at least
[Disapproving.] Came the echo from her mother's direction. Evelyn smirked slightly.
"I don't think the echoes are picking up quite enough irritation yet. But they're getting there. You should grab a few more of those cookies. If we have to sneak out in a rush we should definitely have extras." Evelyn said with all the seriousness she could muster. Which wasn't much when a smile kept crossing her face.
The echoes flickered around the gathering of people. She figured she was just being a little overinterested in what everyone was doing, but they seemed to be a little harder to direct than normal.

"Don't worry I'm good at stealing food. I got this covered." Maya grinned, glancing around as she took a sip of her drink. Hers did not have alcohol in it - designated driver and all that. People around them were giving them weird looks, but nothing Maya had not seen before.
"Have I told you you look lovely?" she smiled at Eve, leaning in to give her a kiss, not on the cheek this time. PDA was always a good way of freaking people out.

The compliment brought color to Evelyn's cheeks, but she smiled, heart racing as Maya's lips met hers. She had to admit, that certainly didn't get old, and it was just an added bonus this time the kissing had two purposes. One, it felt pretty nice, and at the same time it did have the result of making people uncomfortable. She wondered if a few people were resisting going towards the food right now. She almost smuggly hoped they were.
After kissing the mirror-walker back, she pulled away enough to glance sideways. If the looks people gave could kill, her mother would be committing murder. "I think you look pretty good yourself. You start dressing up I'll have competition." She chuckled. She smirked and gave Maya one more kiss then took another drink. People were starting to migrate closer to the seating area, and she figured they didn't have much longer before the ceremony.
