The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>"I've always been a fast learner, but that's mostly because I never forget things so I really only have to learn it once... It's probably going to sound really silly, but I just always assumed I'd never be able to fight my own."
"Funny, that's not what you said the first time I met you" Gawain chuckled. He still remembered how distinctly annoyed it made him that a damsel refused to be saved. And now he was dating said damsel. Go figure.
>>"It feels... odd, being in a fight, honestly... Jensen always suspected I think faster than most people too, because I respond so fast to what's happening. Since I don't have anything to really compare it to though, I'd have to take his word on it."
"It's a good start. You'll just have to practice." Gawain smiled, content with resting his chin on her shoulder until she turned to look at him.
>>"I'm rambling, I'm sorry, I mean... Sam packed cookies, if you want one..."
She blushed when she looked at him, in the cute way only she could when she was around him. Fighting was not the only thing she had no experience with. Good thing she was a fast learner. Their faces were still very close, and it took Gawain a knight's power of will to process what she just said.
>>"Funny, that's not what you said the first time I met you"
Evelyn's face turned crimson at this and she let out a nervous chuckle, glancing at her hands. "I hoped I could... but I'm not sure I ever really believed it back then. I got good at reading people, so I assumed I could be independent and talk my way out of a fight, not necessarily fight my way out of it. Telling someone where to shoot is one thing. Picking up a weapon myself is another thing entirely. After wandering into a few situations I couldn't talk my way out of, and not having Jensen there to help, sort of made me grateful to have someone to turn to. I still don't like having someone smother me like they did. But working together like we did today...I like that."
She glanced up at him with a shy smile, and her heart skipped a beat in a silly school girl way when she realized how close his face was. She could see every detail of his face; the color of his eyes, the curve of his jaw, the little subtle facial shapes that would shift when he'd be Maya the next day. She didn't mind that, which surprised her a little. Gawain was good at doing that too though.
The memories of when they first met flickered through her mind, trailed by the memories of their later encounters. He'd changed a bit since then, especially during the riots. Then again, they both had. She probably never would have guessed the same person who threw her over his shoulder and tossed her into the danger room out of spite would turn into the person she was sitting having a picnic with. Sam must have seen it. And as chaotic as the experience in the danger room had been, she'd never admit how much she enjoyed the day.
The echoes flickered and whispered a few things as she focused on the boy in front of her.
She felt herself lean closer, bridging the gap between them until her lips met his. She wondered, if he had echoes, would they have said a few things about her as well.
>>"I hoped I could... but I'm not sure I ever really believed it back then... I still don't like having someone smother me like they did. But working together like we did today...I like that."
"I like that too" Gawain smiled at her. It was a new experience for him too, even though he was familiar with Danger Room sessions. Most girls around him were either very independent (and capable of kicking his ass), or damsels that he was used to helping out. Evelyn was neither. She was independent-in-training. Working together with her in the DR (both times) was something... refreshingly strange.
Talking about refreshing: Evelyn leaned in and kissed him. Gawain felt himself smiling against her lips for a few seconds before he returned the kiss.
Technically, it was not their first kiss. Still, it was the first one that did not come out of the blue, or was supposed to save both their asses from a training program on haywire. It was... just a kiss.
His arm tightened around her waist as he leaned in. He stole her first kiss, and botched the second, might as well make the third one good. He wondered what her echoes were saying about now.
The echoes were fairly quiet, which was nice. If she had to sit and listen to them talk about squirrels, or Angua, or the ladybugs on the grass while she was kissing someone, it would have ruined the moment a little. She always heard people describe getting kissed in the cheesiest ways. It was like melting. It was like having butterflies in your stomach. It sent shivers down your spine. She figured it couldn't be quite that impressive.
She was pretty sure now she'd add a few cheesy descriptions of her own.
Angua's head butted into her hand and Evelyn smiled, breaking the contact and pulling back ever so slightly, scratching the bloodhound behind the ears. She still had a pink tint to her face, but she forced herself not to look away. She felt braver today. She may not be very strong, and she still had a knack for getting herself in a ridiculous amount of trouble. But she was also fast, and intelligent, and learning to use that to make up for what she couldn't do. It was a boost of confidence, and it helped when dealing with her nervous energy towards relationships as well.
Sam was going to be ridiculously smug if he found out his dumb idea worked in a backwards sort of way.
