The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Sarah bit back a groan. Could they not just leave her soap opera life alone for a minute? Though if it were reversed, she would probably want more information. Hell, she still wanted more info on Juliette's man. Hmmm.
"Tit for tat. I keep going, you give me some more on you and Sam. This is not 'Pick on Sarah' Day," she joked. Just a little bit serious. She really didn't want their entire lunch to be focused on her and not learn a bit more about what Jules had been up to.
"But from what I remember, he had something something to do with shadows. When I first met him, Nate was the art teacher. I don't know if he still is, but that was then. I helped out with an art museum trip and I remember him shielding one of the kids with shadows." She couldn't remember if he had been part of the team or not. Probably not since criminal. But it did leave Sarah wondering how well she had actually known Nate all those years ago.
Sarah huffed out a slightly visible breath as she juggled her things. Trying to keep her umbrella on her arm and her bag from falling open and accepting the cup of tea was harder than she had thought. Her green umbrella fell from it's hooked place on her arm, but the brunette ignored it as she pulled out the needed money for her coffee.
"Thanks. Sorry about all that."
"It's fine. Happens more often than you'd think," the barista smiled.
The artist smiled back and closed her purse before picking up her umbrella. Taking a quick look outside showed that the light drizzle had turned into a misty rain so there really wasn't much point in opening her umbrella again. At least not at this point. And she was late too.
Checking the traffic, Sarah waited for an opening before rushing for the park across the street. She was supposed to be meeting Nate right now, but the line for coffee had moved slower than she had planned for. New York would not be New York without idiots who couldn't live without coffee. All she had wanted was something warm for her hands. Oh well, hopefully Nate hadn't been waiting too long for her.
She tripped a little on the curb and flailed a little to keep her balance. Damn shoes and their bigger than usual soles of her shoes. But these were her rain boots and while they were a little hard to remember the size of, they were the best for days like this when the rain was a near constant thing. The fuzzy insides helped a lot too.
Taking a look ahead, she spotted Nate. It was still a little strange to see the changes four years had on him, but she was getting used to it. "Nate! Hey, sorry I'm late. You weren't waiting long were you?"
Sarah smiled as her friend laughed. She couldn't blame Juliette. It was pretty funny when put in a certain light. "I'm pretty sure I have at least enough for two seasons. We need the first part for one season, cliffhanger, then the recent stuff in season two," she joked. Best way to deal with this from what she could see. The brunette was happy she told her friend about this, otherwise she might brood a little.
"No, he didn't get arrested. He didn't exactly tell me who he was at first. He's changed since... well, he's changed. But we started talking and once I knew who he was and where he had been, I sorta dragged him away from the gallery. Though I probably didn't need to since he knew the curator.
"Anyway, we ended up going to a cafe and catching up. Not a whole lot more. I haven't seen him since, but you might. He's supposed to be at the school." How weird would that be? Going to pick up Juliette and ending up seeing Nate. That would not have been a good way for her to have found out where he was. Sarah chewed her next bite as she wondered about worse ways she could have found out what he had been up to.
Oh God. Her life was a soap opera. Sarah let her head fall back at the realization. And the next bit would just make it so much worse. In for a penny...
"Prison," the brunette replied with a sardonic laugh. "He was in prison. For art forgery. Now, am I Days of Our Lives or General Hospital?"
Sarah nodded in response to Juliette's question. Once her friend had heard all of the past events, the brunette geared herself to continue into recent events.
"Didn't know it was a spider at the time. You know that painting I sent you a picture of? The bowing spider? That was Parker.
"Anyway, so didn't hear from him for four-ish years. That gallery opening I had last week? He showed up. Because he missed me." She stopped. Even now it sounded ridiculous.
How can one be in the mood for a crazy story? Sarah wasn't sure and decided she probably didn't want to know.
Big inhale. This was going to be fun to try to make sense aloud. She took a bite of her meal as she "So when I first came to NYC I met Nate at the park and we helped each other out. He had lost his giant pet spider and I... I lost my wallet. We helped each other and swapped numbers. He then called a few months later asking if I would help him chaperone for a art field trip." Okay, so there was the beginning.
Sarah ate some more as she tried to keep her emotions calm for the next bit. "We had a few dates, got to know each other some more. I thought things were going well. And then I get a note telling me he was leaving and I was 'too good' for him to drag into whatever was going on." Sarah had no problems doing air quotes at this point. Her cutlery may have been involved when she did, but she still did them.
>>”You know, the dragging was unnecessary; I wanted to come, y’know.”
Sarah rolled her eyes. "If you didn't want to come, I'm sure you would've made your sentiments known." She was a small woman and she knew it. And Nate... Well he wasn't small by any standards.
She listened though. Even though she was angry and mad at him, she listened. She remembered the cop from before, when they had first met. Back when everything was simple and easy. He had offered to get his girlfriend to help find her wallet if they couldn't find it themselves. Closing her eyes, the brunette could almost picture herself back then.
Missed her. Well, it made some sense. He had been in prison for years. But catching up... Trying... Those were things she could do.
>>”I mean, unless there’s a territorial boyfriend that would not be cool with that idea."
Sarah burst into laughter. "No 'territorial boyfriend'. And I can't promise anything, but," she smiled a little, "I wouldn't mind a coffee. Just so long as you're straight with me from here on out." That was really all she could hope for really. Anything between them, friendship or otherwise, would be tinged with the lies by omission from years ago. But if they could, she wouldn't mind another friend. "There's a place not too far from here..."
>>"...Plus, you know, it would be awkward for you guys if you were ever introduced.”
Sarah laughed a little. "Pretty sure it's still going to be awkward. But I get it. Less awkward than it could be." Had she thought Sam was attractive? Yes. But she hadn't been in a place where she would've asked him out. And probably wouldn't have been for a year or so after their meeting.
The brunette groaned at her friend's question. Nate. Did she want to get into this here? Now? No. But who else would she talk to? "Recently or do you want some of the history there? Because to be honest, it's crazy. At least by my standards."
Impulsive. Sarah mouthed the word to herself for a moment. Then she thought about what Nate had said about the curator. That... that did not make Sarah feel any better about all of this. But, she would probably end up meeting "former acquaintances" of Nate's quite often in the art world. It wasn't that big of a community.
>>"There were probably smarter choices than risking my probation, but I guess the minuscule chance of running into you was too much to pass up."
The brunette shook her head at her old... at Nate. Sighing, she grabbed the arm of his jacket and started for the door. "There are easier ways to get a girl's attention," she huffed back at him.
As she pulled him out of the gallery, Sarah made sure to send the smirking curator a glare. He did not know their business. Sarah kept walking until they were a block away. She didn't know the exact distance he was allowed so it would have to do. If their conversation ended up being longer than a few minutes, she knew of a coffee shop nearby, though she wasn't sure about the connotations of that move.
"Did you ever use anything we did together to help with a crime?" Probably shouldn't be having this conversation in the middle of the sidewalk, but she wanted to be standing and so sidewalk it was. "Is there any way my work can be connected as part of any crime?" Sarah stopped. She had loads of questions but figured it would be best to go piece by piece. She'd probably get more as they kept talking.
Sarah stared at ex-con, -teacher, -significant-person-in-her-life. A week. He had been out of prison a week. And he was here at one of her shows. Which...
"You got out of prison for art forgery and then came to one of my art shows?" she asked, quite a bit of shock in her voice. "Wouldn't you be on probation? Wouldn't coming here be a violation of that?"
Sarah's hands fell limp as her... as Nate began his explanation. Art forger. White collar criminal. Conman. Before she could even fully process what he had told her, there was more. He "came clean" and went to prison. She could understand, just a little, how he left the way he did. It wasn't an excuse, but the woman was conscious enough to know she probably wouldn't have taken the news well back then. Hell, she probably wasn't taking it well now.
>>"I really like you Sarah."
That didn't much make her feel better. He left with just about no word and then showed up at one of her shows and... what did he expect? What does he want?
"'Less messy,'" she repeated after he was done. Taking a deep breathe, she reminded herself that she was not allowed to make a scene at the gallery. "You know, I doubt this all would have mattered for long back then."
Her smiled turned sardonic as she thought back to that year. Though of her father's stroke and eventual death. She really doubted she would have paid much attention after that December. As always when she thought of her father, her tear ducts started working aggressively. It still hurt, even after so many years. Her mother was lifeless most days, only her and her brother could get a response from the heartbroken woman.
Sarah couldn't see how her friend made the leap in question. From her having met Sam to...
Okay, so she could see how her friend would get there. It was just funny the way Juliette had asked.
Another snorting laugh kept her from answering, but she shook her head as an early answer. "No. No, we did not. He saved my butt from some unsavory characters and got me home safe. That was the extent of our acquaintance. I just found in funny that I knew him, if vaguely. No, Sweetheart, he is all yours." She should probably explain better. "It was during some anti-mutant protests and well, I've never been shy about my views. Some drunks decided I was an easy target and Sam came to my rescue. Helped me home since I had messed up my ankle running from said drunks. Nothing untoward happened." Sarah smiled reassuringly at her friend.
Her eyes darted to Nate's face. Didn't say it all? Sarah doubted that and her face showed it. And he didn't know how to explain? Seemed pretty easy from where she stood. If Nate didn't want a relationship with her all he had to do was say so. Which he did in his note.
But he wanted to "explain" now. Alright. She could deal with that. Did she have an interest in what he had to say? More than she liked to admit to.
"Alright. Explain it to me then," she huffed a little, not moving from where she stood. If he wanted to explain, he would have to on her terms.
Well there wasn't much Sarah felt she could say to him now. The "leave a note and disappear" bit was pretty telling. He had known who she was from the beginning. Of course he did. They had been close...
Or at least, she had thought they were. Then she received a note that honestly caused quite a few tear soaked nights. And he regretted it. She wondered what exactly he regretted of the events. There were so many ways she could take his words. But...
"'Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, 'It might have been,'' Nate," she said softly, words just loud enough to carry to him. Keeping her eyes cast down, Sarah tried to reign in her emotions. She had never been good at public masques though. "Ya know, I thought about going to the school to find you. Figured it would be useless though. Your note really said it all."
