The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Ugh. Here we go again. Another major city, another pile of paperwork. Alex thought as he stepped out of a taxi cap and looked up at the police station that he knew wasn't going to be expecting him. Few of the 15 states he had been to during the last year had been expecting him... or the team of FBI agents he had been traveling with. Normally the feds and the MRC stuck to their channels when they were chasing after a suspect, but when it came to bringing a consultant with them that technically didn't have any form of law enforcement authority... well, it got complicated rather quickly. And the paperwork started to get stacked rather high. However during that year the FBI had helped fill out all of the paperwork so all he had to do was sign everything.
This time however he was going to have to fill it all out on his own... which meant he was going to have to fill in all the details himself. This was gonna take hours. It wasn't something he was unfamiliar with though. The first time he had come to the Big Apple he had to hand over his locksmith van because the state wide locksmith license that Alex had at the time didn't apply to New York City. It had it's own licensing system, and the vehicle needed that new license to be used as a locksmith van within the city limits. Back then he never got it because he left the city and went back to Kansas. The next time he was in the city he had stopped with the locksmith gig altogether and tried to be a potter.
Now what was he? A consultant for the FBI that had been dismissed due to them no longer needing his assistance because they cut the head off the snake for that mutant mercenary group that had become terrorists. However his certification with the MRC was still good. He just had to make sure that it got that special little something so it could work in the city.
With a groan Alex started to head towards the police center's front door, knowing that this one had a large office made directly for the MRC. He didn't get far when he was stopped by the greeter.
"Hold it. I'm gonna need to see some ID." said a rather gruff looking man whose voice was deep enough to make Darth Vader sound like he was on helium.
"Of course! I actually have three on me since I'm not sure which ones you guys were gonna want for the paperwork I'm gonna need to fill out here." Alex responded kindly, which quickly brought a puzzled look to the officer's face. After Alex pulled out his license and passport, he pulled out the card that mattered. "By the way, would you be able to tell me who I should talk to in order to get that last one to work here in the city that never sleeps?"
The officer held that last card at eye level, then lowered it to give Alex a rather bewildered look. "MRC and FBI consultant?" "I might be of help around here if you guys need it. So, do you have a suggestion on who to talk to?"
Her helicopter comment made him chuckle, though when she tried to decide on which of his names to use, he thought he picked up something in his voice and saw something in her eyes. He didn't have a clue as to what he saw though. "Eh, either one is fine. I just prefer the nickname my Pops gave me when I was six. Said I was a lot like his favorite chess piece." he explained.
Upon hearing Dr. Rudolph Kipperling, Rook nodded. "Got it, but I'll only call him Ruddy after I'm hired. Might as well keep it professional, right?" he stated, then smiled when Allegra started to complain about doing chores. "Well, cooking is a good skill to have. It comes in handy so you don't have to waste a bunch of your money eating out. Not to mention that this is your home after all. You should help out with taking care of it." he said in a kind tone, hoping that what he said won't be brushed aside. "As to what I am hoping to be hired for, well I've done a bunch of work as a custodian, so I thought I'd try to get that job here. While you guys are protecting our human brothers, I'd be protecting you from sickness. And before you say that's a doctor's job, keep in mind that a doctor's job is to cure your sickness. My job would be to preventing you from getting sick in the first place."
Her reaction to the MRC card however was rather funny. "Not exactly, but basically I'm a go to guy when law enforcement need help." Alex stated, however he was well aware that this didn't make him a good guy OR a bad guy. Depending on the mutant you asked, this could make him a hero in the eyes of a law abiding mutant... and a traitor in the eyes of the mutants who believe that humans are no longer needed. Am I ever going to be in a situation in where I'm never viewed as a traitor? As she walked in Alex followed, attempting not to get knocked over by the flying balls of fur that were underfoot. After glancing around the kitchen, he decided to keep his pack on since he didn't want to be rude and put it on someone's designated chair.
As Allegra started to introduce her pets Alex knelt down and held out his hand so the dog that was sniffing him could smell his hand, and maybe so the 'braver' of the two dogs could see he wasn't a threat. "They are adorable. I take it mommy is proud of her babies?" Alex asked with a smile up towards the young woman as he stood up. "I had a soft-coated wheaten terrier when I was growing up named Sam. He was cute but the poor thing was afraid of everything. The only thing he wasn't afraid of was his own shadow. But he was really good at herding sheep." Alex stated.
Turning his attention back to Allegra as she asked if there was anything he wanted to know. Crossing his arms in thought, Alex quickly came up with some questions. "I think the first thing to know is what the rules are. Along with which of the residences should be avoided."
The number of seconds that went by before someone had responded to Alex pressing the doorbell could've been counted on one hand and still have fingers left over, and for a split second it made Alex feel a bit of respect for the mansion to have such good security and service. However when he realized that the person coming towards him was just a teenager walking her dog, he realized that he had jumped to conclusions. He had to be more careful about that.
What she said though made him smile. "It's one of a couple hundred I've got." he said with a shrug. However when she asked about a fly swatter, he chuckled as his eyes started to glow green again, and using a pair of crystals he grew a fly swatter with a foot long hand in his right hand. "One fly swatter." he said with a smile, and suddenly got the urge to show off. Meh, why not? He thought and then held up the malachite fly swatter at eye level. "But you know, in my experience they always take off before you can hit them, so something a wee bit bigger always works for me." he said, then grabbing the fly swatter with both hands so he could use both bracers, Rook grew the fly swatter so it had a seven foot long handle, while the paddle of it was five feet tall by five feet wide. "Like this! This one works first time, every time!" he said with a goofy smile. With the super sized fly swatter in hand, and the big grin on his face, Rook looked like he belonged in the Loony Toons show.
However he didn't stay like that for long, quickly recalling the gigantic flyswatter back into his malachite bracers hidden within his sleeves, followed by the green glow of his eyes vanishing to reveal his cyan eyes once again. "Nice to meet you Allegra. Name's Alex, but I prefer Rook. As for why I'm here, I'm actually hoping to find work here. Maybe not as an X-Men, but another pair of hands couldn't hurt." he said with a warm smile. However her evil comment made him chuckle. "Looks can be deceiving, as can words. So instead how about I prove to you that I'm not evil instead?" Alex stated as he pulled his wallet out of his rear pocket, and from it he pulled out the MRC consultant and held it out for her to see. "If I was evil, they wouldn't want my help and instead would've gone after me instead."
It wasn't until then that he finally looked down at the dog. "And who is this cute pooch?" he said as he knelt down to get a closer look at the animal. "What breed is he?"
New York City, the city that never sleeps. Home to many rich and famous, businesses, along with many homeless and extremely high parking meter prices. It was also the center of many mutant related issues due to there being such a high number of mutants here.
And I never thought I would end up returning here. Alex thought as he looked out the taxi window as it transported him through the city. Had it truly been 5 years since he was last in this city? It sure didn't feel like it... it felt much longer. Last time he had been here he had opened a pottery shop in an attempt to make a living, and had several interesting guests, ranging from a little child that had a mutation that could transform her into a full grown woman with super strength, along with a wannabee deity that had a serious issue with wanting to know absolutely everything about everyone she met even if they didn't want to share... and almost everything in between. He even helped bust an M-drug dealer or two.
But still, it was hard to believe it was only 5 years ago that this had happened. After falling in love, moving halfway across the state, getting married, have a daughter, losing all of that because of the grudge of an old enemy, and working with the FBI and MRC to catch them, Alex felt like it had been at least 10 years or more. All that stress certainly had made him age 10 years mentally, and underneath his clothing he was far more scar tissue then clear skin now. However he was still more than capable of holding his own all things considered. Sure he was an emotional train wreck on the inside but that didn't mean he wasn't useful.
Looking out of the other window now, the malachite manipulator could see his destination in the distance; the mansion that was the home of the New York City X-Men. He had been here before when he had last been in the city, wondering if he could join, but that had ended on a sour note due to him not being able to communicate properly. He also lacked self-esteem back then. However he was a different man now, so he hoped he could be of help to them now.
And if not he could always work for the police since his consultant certification was still good. He was sure they'd take him since there weren't many around that had experience in taking down mutants that were trained for war. And if that failed too, he'd return to owning a pottery shop and produce rather elegant statues and works of art. It earned him some serious coin back in Rochester, it would do the same here.
However he would prefer to help the X-Men. He didn't have to be one though, heck he wasn't even going to request to be one until he had built a level of trust with them. What he was hoping to do was build that trust with them by becoming a custodian for them. It might be a simple job that many wouldn't want, but it was an important one. After all in Alex's opinion a doctor's job was to cure the sick, while a custodian's job was to make sure you didn't get sick in the first place.
Once the taxi finally came to a stop outside of the mansion, Alex climbed out, gave the taxi driver the requested payment and a 50% tip, and started the hike up to the mansion main gate. He guessed that they already knew that he was here. Why wouldn't they have security cameras? And if not, he could do what he did last time he was here; ring the doorbell that was on the front gate... and hope that the person that came to greet him wasn't rude unlike that last one had. Just because that kid was on crunches didn't excuse his poor attitude.
When Rook was almost to the gate he saw a piece of paper caught on the wind on its way to fly into the mansion grounds. Not wanting the litter to spread, he held out his hand towards the paper, and his eyes quickly started to glow green. An instant later a rod of malachite extended from his jacket sleeve at 16 miles an hour, grabbing the paper out of the air with a three fingered hand that was at the end of the rod. The rod quickly retracted, but Alex didn't grab the paper with his hands from the malachite he was manipulating until he had pulled a small garbage bag out of his backpack to put the paper in.
That done, his malachite fully retracted, and his eyes no longer glowing, Alex continued to the gate and promptly pressed the door bell.
Alex wasn't sure what he was going to do first... panic or faint. His power had been switched with a kid that had the ability to control two rather strong looking dogs with his mind, and they seemed to be responding to Alex's instincts of wanting to protect those around him. Question was, could he get them to stop when he wanted them to stop because some of his instincts are more around the deadly type. The malachite manipulator wasn't afraid to kill if he had to, and he knew it... but would that transfer to the dogs? Would they kill in order to protect Miles and this little girl? Alex hoped not.
Glancing at Miles, Alex felt a shiver go up his spine when he realized that Miles could be in even bigger trouble because he now had Alex's power. While his power was extremely useful in many situations, the malachite primarily turns Alex into a walking Swiss army knife, capable of striking out at someone over a distance of 30 feet... and the way he controlled it wasn't easy even for him at times. He had to literally focus on controlling his power for a few months without end so it would be safe for him to even touch malachite. Now he wasn't sure what was going to happen with Miles if he touched the bracers on Alex's forearms. The only up side right now seemed to be that the malachite controlling mutation that was currently in Miles seemed to be dormant for now since the kid's eyes were glowing green.
When Miles asked if the switch was permanent and said that if it was then he and Alex would really need to have a talk, Alex glanced at the girl just in time to see her shake her head. "It only lasts a few hours... but only if you two stick together." the girl responded then whimpered as she clutched her stomach, and Alex swore that he heard a growling sound coming from the girl... she was starving.
Realizing that he was still holding the bag containing his lunch, he knelt down in front of the girl and held it out to her. "Here." "Huh? You're... you not mad?" the girl asked surprised as she looked at the plastic container hungrily since she could smell the meal that was inside of it. "No, I'm not. It was an accident. You're hungry aren't you?" Alex responded, and that's all he had to say. The girl quickly snatched the box out of his hand, opened it up, and quickly started to devour the filet.
It was only then that Alex acknowledged the fact that Miles stated that they needed to talk about their powers. "I know we need to talk Miles. More so then you think. If you can't control the malachite, there is a chance that you could annihilate everything with 72 feet of you, including yourself. You are, quite literally, a walking meat grinder until our powers revert to normal." Alex stated flatly.
Howdy! Welcome to the site. I really like your character, and I really LOVE the fact that you're an amazing writer. I'm looking forward to roleplaying with you some time.
... the only thing is this our characters might be up at each others throats in a matter of seconds, mainly because Alex doesn't grovel for anyone.
At first, all Alex could hear was a raspy voice coming from Miles that sounded like he was surrendering and asking someone to take his money and leave... though he didn't see anyone around the kid, so maybe he meant the little girl? For the malachite manipulator, this type of pain was almost impossible to bare, even with all of the stuff that he had been through his whole life. For a person that almost never got into fights, they might not be able to handle this type of pain.
It wasn't until Alex had raised himself half way into a kneeling position that Miles answered him by shaking his head. Miles then seemed to talk about what Alex was feeling at the moment... like he wasn't himself anymore, and that he couldn't sense his dogs even though they were right there, as if they weren't his anymore. Alex didn't respond at first, he only looked down at the malachite bracers that clung to his wrists and seemed so heavier then usual. He couldn't hear their beautiful wind-chime like tone anymore... and the silence was deafening. Still though, there was something else, as if he was looking at himself from two different sets of eyes, and Miles's dogs were staring at him as if waiting for him to give them a command.
"I know the feeling. I can't sense my malachite anymore... and my head is filled with images as if I'm seeing through another pair of eyes." Alex commented, then glanced over at the little girl, whom was starting to get up and was staring at them both with a scared look and a tear in her eye. "I-I... I'm so sorry..." she whimpered and started to shutter with fear. "Calm yourself little one. What happened?" Alex responded as he forced himself to stand up, despite how much his body was protesting that it was too weak to move... but his heart demanded that he stood up. Weak or not, himself or not, Alex made it his purpose to look after those that couldn't look after themselves... and right now Miles and this girl were in that position. As if the dogs were agreeing with him, the two dogs walked off in two different directions till they were about twenty feet apart and started to walk a slow circle around Miles, Alex, and the girl, as if on guard duty.
That was when Miles asked Alex to answer his cell phone, and Alex gave him a puzzled look. "I don't have a cell phone." Alex answered... then his face paled. He couldn't sense his malachite, yet Miles was hearing something that sounded like a ringing sound... along the same lines Miles couldn't sense his dogs, and yet Alex kept on thinking that he was seeing through two more pairs of eyes. "You hear ringing... and I'm seeing triple... oh no." Alex exclaimed and turned back to the girl. "Did you... did you just?"
The girl nodded. "I can't control it when it happens... but when I'm close to two mutants... I switch their powers." the girl stated with a sniffle. Alex felt like he was about to faint.
Alex went from being on only his knees to being on his hands and knees, still screaming in agony, but not so much from the pain of the energy beam. The sensation of having a part of himself literally ripped from his body was agonizing and unbearable. The malachite manipulator had been in several battles and had the battle scars to prove it. He had been slashed, bitten, limbs dislocated, even shot with a gun a few times... but none of that could hold a candle to the feeling of not being whole. All reasonable thinking was gone as the pain sunk deep into Alex's body like razor sharp talons, and all the pleas for mercy from Alex's mouth were inaudible.
Meanwhile everyone in the park had stopped what they were doing and had turned to see where the screaming was coming from, and all of them were frozen where they stood with fear. They wanted to help the two screaming men, but none of them wanted to be in that same state, so all they did was watch, including a horse-mounted police officer.
Finally, after an agonizing minute, both beams of energy coming from the girl suddenly stopped, and she fell flat on her face from passing out. The physical pain was gone, but the feeling of no longer being whole was still there and even more intense. Alex barely managed to look up and open his eyes to see if Miles was alright, but his vision was completely obscured by the floating green orb that was now at eye level with him.
The moment Alex saw that green orb, he knew right away that it was his mutation. He tried to lift a hand to grab it to make a foolhardy attempt to put it back in him, but he was feeling so weak that he could lift a finger. He tried to lean forwards to grasp it but the moment he started he had to stop for he feared that he would fall flat on his face.
Then suddenly, the green orb shot forwards, heading right for Miles. A black orb was rocketing for Alex, and he guessed that it was Miles's mutation. Before Alex could do anything, it slammed into his head and was absorbed into his body. The sensation of having something ripped out of him was gone, but it had been replaced by another sensation... as if there was a part of him that didn't belong. He felt like he was a gigantic 3D jigsaw puzzle and that someone had removed handful of pieces and replaced them with different pieces that fit into place, but they were from a different puzzle so the picture didn't make sense anymore.
A wave of exhaustion swept through Alex and the malachite manipulator collapsed. As he laid there, he could've sworn that he was hearing everything three times, not just once... and why was it that he thought he was looking at himself from two different angles and out of his own eyes as well... and all of those different smells? Something was really wrong, and Alex wasn't liking it.
With a groan, he started to pick himself off the ground... slowly. The malachite that was on his wrists felt so heavy now, like he was finally noticing that they were there. "Ooooh... Miles? Ugh... you... you alright?" Alex asked meekly, wondering what the heck had just happened.
And as he slowly got himself up onto his hands and knees, he seemed to be watching himself get up as if he had two more sets of eyes.
Alex nodded in response to Aura stating that she was no stronger then a human, and the same went for Alex. He had his weaknesses, and some of them were a bit on the extreme side. He couldn't swim for one, for two he had horrid aim with thrown objects and guns, and third his malachite was breakable if enough pressure was applied to it by an object that was harder then it, such as the metal of Aura's sword. He also only had one arm to fight with at the moment, and it wasn't his dominant limb. Sure, he could still manipulate the malachite in his right hand, but what good would it do if he couldn't put any force behind the blows?
When Alex's extending malachite fist neared Aura, the malachite manipulator noticed that she couldn't dodge because of her wounded leg and ended up taking the full force of the blow, but she was still able to keep going, and that was very impressive to say the least. "Just how much endurance do you have?? Most people would've thrown in the towel long before now." Alex exclaimed as he retracted the malachite fist and watched her form an aura-like mace on her right hand, then she swung at him. Lifting his left arm the malachite manipulator managed to block the blow, thanks to the fact that it was much slower then the last attack that Aura had thrown at him... but he was having trouble keeping her back.
They had both lost a considerable amount of strength and they were both weakening. Still holding her mace at bay, Alex gritted his teeth and glanced back into Aura's eyes with his glowing green eyes. He had been told that when he was looking directly into someone's eyes when up close, some people think he's looking into their soul and that it was quite intimidating. However, Alex guessed that Aura would be unfazed by his eyes. He glanced up at where their two powers crossed, and then back at her, and let out a sigh. He couldn't use his other arm to help, and even if he did it wouldn't be fast enough to stop her from using her own power from her other hand if she wanted to.
"We're dead locked. Wanna call it a tie?" Alex asked as he pushed back a little less.
Alex almost laughed when Miles commented that anyone would find his malachite bracers valuable with them worth that much money. Alex of course had been kidding about his bracers being worth a couple hundred thousand... they were each worth that much since it was hard enough finding this much malachite in one spot, but hollowing it out without cracking it would be almost impossible because of the way malachite forms. The darn stuff formed as stalagmites with an interwoven crystalline structure, while normal gemstones formed as simple crystals.
But that didn't really matter at the moment. What mattered was that the kid seemed to pick up on Alex's not so subtle hint that he was a mutant, and seemed to be attempting to tell Alex that he was a mutant as well, but in a rather different way. He compared Alex's 'sickness' to his dogs 'sickness,' and mentioned that having such a thing is hard for people judge you for it, and Alex nodded in response. However when the kid mentioned that they were like ants that couldn't talk, Alex grew puzzled as he tilted his head to the side while raising an eyebrow. "I think you lost me. What do you mean by mute ants? That kinda changes the... topic..." Alex started to say, but his voice trailed off when he said 'mute ants.' The corners of Alex's mouth perked upwards and he covered his mouth as he tried to muffle a laugh. "Nice." Alex stated when he finally got control of himself.
The kid continued and seemed to stubble over his words as he tried to say that he had full control over his dogs. So Alex's guess about the kid controlling the minds of the dogs seemed to be on the right track after all. It wasn't long afterwards that the kid dropped the topic and introduced himself as Miles. "I'm Alex. Nice to meet you." Alex stated and held out his hand for shake.
The moment he did, an ear piercing scream echoed throughout the whole park, making Alex jump and spin on his heel to see the same little girl that had been running away from Miles clutching her head and kneeling on the ground... and she was surrounded by a glowing light. "What the?" Alex muttered in surprise as he tried to figure out if the glow was being produced by someone else... or if the girl was really a mutant and was having trouble controlling her powers. Since everyone in the park was running away from the girl, it looked like to Alex that she was the source of the light, and he started to run over to her. "HEY!! You alright?!" Alex yelled as he approached her, but the girl's response made Alex step in his tracks. "Stop! Please! Get back! I can't control my power when there are two mutants nearby!" she shrieked, her voice full of pain as the aura of light that was around her started to shrink towards her hands, which seemed to be directed in Alex's direction.
"No no! Please, no!" the girl cried out, but what ever she was trying to stop, it was too late as a beam of yellow light shot out of her hands and headed towards Alex. Without thinking, Alex turned to Miles with his eyes glowing bright green as a pair of large green hands grew out from the malachite bracers. "Look out!" Alex yelled as the hands grabbed onto Miles and shoved him away from Alex... and then the beam hit Alex square in the back. Alex felt as if his whole body was on fire, then quickly became frozen, then on fire again but this time he felt like he was being pierced by at least a dozen spikes. The pain was beyond imagination as Alex screamed out in agony and fell to his knees. The malachite hands that were pushing Miles away let go and quickly retracted back into the bracers.
Slowly, an orb of green light was forming in front of Alex's chest and the glow from Alex's eyes faded, revealing Alex's cyan eyes... but they weren't as bright as they normally were as if something was missing from them. Suddenly the malachite manipulator wasn't able to sense the malachite that was on his wrists, and he felt like something had been torn out of his body and mind, like he wasn't whole anymore... and the sensation was even worse then the pain he was feeling. He tried to make a shield of malachite around him to protect him from this attack... but it was as if he had forgotten how to control the malachite.
Another beam of light shot out of the girl and headed for Miles, and seemed to curve towards the boy with the dogs... as if it was homing in on him.
Welcome aboard Ty! I love your power! Seeing as to how my character Alex has had such a rough way of discovering his mutation, and how his mutation revolves around the malachite bracers that are on his wrists, it would be rather interesting to see what memories Ty 'sees' from Alex's bracers. Ty would also have a good reason to what to get his hands on those bracers as well; malachite is a type of gemstone that is rather rare in America, so they are worth a lot of money... pay dirt for a pickpocket. The two of them also have rather similar personalities; wanting to protect those they care about to the point of putting their friends ahead of themselves. I imagine that our characters could become good friends.
