The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Lee reached out and took the book David was holding. "Yeah, grief..." she said as she flipped through it. David instantly started thinking about his long time friend Chris, who as far as David knew was not dead, just gone. If this book can help you deal with the death of someone close, I'm sure it can help with the accidental disappearance of one as well. He thought to himself as she finished her sentence. "...some of it is kind of hidden between the author's bs about how to contact spirits, but...This part here is probably the best section in the book on grief."
David took the book back and smiled, though he wasn't sure if Lee was empathetic, or if she was trying to make a sale. Most likely a mixture of both. What ever the case it was nice talking to someone about the one thing we all ignore, death. It was ironic tho, a conversation about death while they shot so many smiles back and forth.
"Do you have anything that just focuses on grief? I don't think i need much on how to raise the dead, or even talk to them." David places the book back down on the shelf for the second time. "I wonder if it is us who contact them, or if they contact us? You ever think of that Lee?" He gave her a smile, implying another debate.
David thought of Chris once more, he wondered if it really were possible to contact the dead, and if so maybe he could find out if Chris were alive or not. The guilt started to build up inside him, and his smile he gave Lee, slowly faded. His eyes started to water a bit, tho he tried to hide it. "Is their a candle burning, I might be allergic."
Lee thought for a moment when she heard David's question. She had read almost every book in the shop by this point, more out of boredom than any real interest, but she didn't exactly remember every part of all the books. "I don't think we do," Lee answered a moment later. "People just looking for a book on grief tend to go to a book store, not a medium."
But then David went on, asking another question of her that bordered on dangerous depending on how she answered it. "I have on occasion," Lee told him slowly. Hopefully he'd take her thoughtfulness in speaking more as figuring out how to word her thoughts than to hide the truth about Tarin.
"I mean, everyone's different when we're alive, so why not after we die, too?" Lee asked with a small shrug. "Tarin says some spirits are easier to contact than others, so maybe it's a combination. Some spirits are trying to contact still living loved ones, where as for others it's us contacting them."
As she spoke, Lee saw David's smile fading and Lee wondered if that was a tear she saw in his eye. Was all this talk about spirits and grief because David was trying to figure things out, because he had lost someone? "There probably are," Lee said softly, turning to move back toward the counter and try not to draw attention to David's attempt to hide his emotions. "The candles help focus the energies as Tarin's communicating with the spirits." Or, at least most people expected there to be candles when speaking with the dead. After being with Tarin, Lee knew better.
"The candles help focus the energies as Tarin's communicating with the spirits." David rolled his eyes. "'Smoke and mirrors hun, parlor tricks. I was in retail too" He wiped what little tears from his eyes. "But what ever puts ass' in the seats right?" He suddenly became slightly defensive, almost in denial about this whole Medium business. "I mean, who needs books on how to deal with the loss of someone anyways? I don't need anyone telling me how to feel or how to deal with things." He walks toward the counter where Lee was standing. "Do you think its possible to get a one on one with Tarin?" David became very intrigued. "You know, let Oz run his magic behind the curtain." He leaned his back on the counter, still talking to Lee but looking out of the window at people walking by. "At least he can tell me if the grieving process is worth it or not."
Lee seemed like she was ready to get out of work, and Tarin definitely looked like he didn't want to deal with that customer when he came in. David suddenly like the idea of getting a reading, or what ever you call it. Even if Lee were to suggest it not being a good idea, David was just stubborn enough to insist. Lee and Tarin didn't know Chris wasn't dead, but they didn't have to. This was mostly for David's amusement. He had nothing in his life anymore but his work, and today he has already met a handful of extraordinary people. Which has momentarily set his mind aside from his car being jacked earlier today. Not to mention being face to face with a nasty stalker bot.
It was almost as if being in this shop took his mind off the pressures in life. "What do you say Lee?" He bowed his head and gave her the saddest excuse for puppy eyes. "You know you can pencil me in." He laughed after making him self look like and idiot with that face. "If not, i guess i will just go back to my lonely hotel room, and drink my sorrows away. Not ever knowing what has happened.." He stopped mid banter and looked at Lee...he raised his eyebrows hoping his sarcastic pleading will get her to agree.

God this guy was a jackass...Tarin couldn't help but think as he toiled his way through the "reading" he was doing. The guy was a greedy SOB as well, trying to contact the spirit of his dead father for the location of a will...a will that supposedly held the key to a great inhereitance. Tarin was sick to his stomach and in a just bad enough mood to give the guy exactly what he wanted...cryptic clues and ghostly images. Unfortunately it was all bullshit. Who knew what the guy would find, but it sure as hell wouldn't be a will.
Finally the dude seemed satisfied and Tarin wiped his brow in an imitation of exertion, explaining that the spirits were no longer restless and that obviously their important message had been passed along. The guy was stoked, and stood for a good fifteen seconds wringing Tarin's hand before handing Tarin the money for the reading and making his way, all smiles, from the room.
Tarin sighed and ran his hands through his hair, shaking off the slight guilt that he still felt for scamming the guy, even if he was a jerk. The back room was relatively quiet, there weren't many spirits hanging around on this particular day and Tarin was happy for it, with punk in teh front with Lee...Tarin had almost forgotten.
Hoofing it quickly towards the front, Tarin emerged to find David still there, a fact that made him absolutely grit his teeth in frustration. Why hadn't Lee made him leave yet? Worst of all, they seemed involved in a fairly serious conversation, Tarin caught the tail end of, a reading...this punk wanted a reading after the rude way he'd been acting. He was skeptic too apparently.
Suddenly, an idea formed itself in Tarin's head, it was risky and it would probably make Lee angry, but Tarin didn't care at the moment, not after the way "David" had been acting since inviting himself into the shop to use the phone.
"You're interested in a reading eh?" Tarin said, "Skeptical eh?" he added with a grin that really wasn't very nice. "Let's see what we can do about that, shall we? I think you'll be my last for the day though. Lee, why don't you close up shop while David and I go to the back?"
That said, Tarin smiled at the younger man and turned without waiting to return to the back of the shop.
Lee simply shrugged when David claimed that what she had said was simply smoke and mirrors. "That's what sceptics say, but believers say it's necessary. We've got enough business here without me trying to convince nonbelievers."
She left it at that. Going into detail, especially in this case it seemed, was a bad idea.
But then David was asking for a session, wanting to know what it would be like. All Lee could do for a couple moments was look at him. "I really don't think that'd be a good idea," she finally settled on, her voice quiet. "Tarin doesn't like you. That'd mess things up if he were to do a reading for you."
That didn't seem to stop David, since he pressed on, trying to convince her to pencil him in for a session. Almost before he had finished speaking though, Lee jumped as she heard the bell on the door ring and looked up to see the guy Tarin had been doing the session with walking away down the street. She really needed to get better with paying attention to her siphoning; she hadn't even felt the guy get closer to her.
And then she heard Tarin's voice, and Lee felt a chill run through her as she heard the tone. Looking over, she gave him a warning look. "Tarin, I really don't think..." she started, but he had already disappeared into the back of the shop again.
Oh, this was not good, this was really not good. Just by the look Tarin had had on his face, the tone he had had in his voice, Lee feared what he was about to do. And hoped against hope that she was wrong. They so did not need to be exposed like this, not simply because Tarin had gotten jealous and angry.
Moving to the very front of the shop, Lee flicked off the sign and started closing the blinds, hurrying more than she normally would without looking like she was rushing in case David was still in the front with her.
David was slightly startled by Tarin's return, but the look on his face to see that David was still in his shop was well worth the chill up his spine. "You're interested in a reading eh? Skeptical eh?" Tarin said as the look on his face went from disappointed to devilish. "Let's see what we can do about that, shall we? I think you'll be my last for the day though. Lee, why don't you close up shop while David and I go to the back?" David looked over at Lee once more, but she jumped on the fact that she could close up. She must have really want to go home David thought to him self.
He followed Tarin into the back room, "So, this is where the magic happens?" It was your typical cliche, to make people think they are getting the Hollywood experience. Not too flashy, but elegantly antique. "You guys get cable back here?" Tarin seemed quite, like he was focusing on something. David would then decide to play along for the time being. He kept quite as Tarin meddled with something across the room.
Just then David let out a big yawn. "Oh, man excuse me...I just feel kinda tired all of a sudden, guess I should have gotten another coffee." The reference was to remind Tarin that Lee was with David earlier getting coffee, just to piss him off. But truth be told, David did feel kinda weak, like he didn't have the energy to for this reading, he just wanted to go home and relax. But it was too late, he wasn't gonna back out now. "So, ghost-buster, your not gonna turn me into a dog, are you?"

The look that Lee gave Tarin almost made him give up his idea and simply toss the asshole out on the street. It would be satisfying, but not nearly as satisfying as what Tarin really had planned. Lee was going to be pissed...Lee was going to be really pissed, but it was worth it. Tarin would show this jerk what it meant to mess with his fiance. Lee would get over it...maybe.
Tarin was all business now and he grinned that same, cold smile at David as the kid made a sarcastic remark, "Yup. This is where the magic happens." Tarin said, moving about, lighting candles, turning off lights and pulling the cover off the crystal ball on the table. He was gonna pull out all the stops for this one.
There was insence burning and Tarin took a deep breath, inhaling the spicy aroma with relish. The candle light bathed the room in a flickering glow and as soon as he was sure that there was enough visibility Tarin sat, gesturing to the chair opposite him and waiting for David to sit.
"No cable...something way better than cable..." was the cryptic reply to the second question he was asked and Tarin sat back, not trying to hard to keep out the cries and pleas of the lost souls who had come for help this particular day. There were three of them, nothing exceptionally remarkable or strong which only strengthened Tarin's resolve to teach this kid a lesson and slowly he started to feed them energy.
Yeah...this little bastard needed a lesson in the way you treated people when they did you a favor. Seriously....seriously...bringing up the coffee...yeah he'd gotten to stand in line with Lee...but Tarin was going to be the one who went home with, and woke up beside her.
"A dog?" Tarin said, his voice low and ominous as his eyes faded from their usual dark brown to a milkly white, "I don't do parlor tricks kiddo."
That said, Tarin concentrated, concentrated hard on sending energy to the spirits in the room and slowly but surely they started to take form. When he was sure they'd be seen, and the linke was established with all three he sent a request, and soon they were surrounding David in his chair.
"Asking for a reading with skeletons in your closet?" Tarin said, creepy eyes narrowing as the spirits started to moan and wail softly. He'd have to help them later or they'd never leave him alone, but that, like Lee's anger was worth it. He'd felt powerless way too much lately and even if he was being a bit of a bully, it. was. worth it.
Having finished closing the blinds on the windows, Lee looked behind her to see an empty room. David had followed Tarin into the back room already. Why couldn't he have just listened to me? Lee wondered as she flicked the lock on the door and turned. This was so not going to go well. At least she wasn't wearing her boots, this was one of the only times she had been happy about that fact, and she made her way quietly across the wooden floor to the back of the shop.
Lifting the curtain out of the way just enough for her to slip through, Lee stood barely in the back room. More in the doorway, actually, in almost the exact same place she had after the night at the bar months earlier when she and Tarin had had their first kiss.
>"A dog? I don't do parlor tricks kiddo."
She had missed the first part, that was obvious, because she had needed to lock up the shop, but that definitely did not make Lee feel better about the situation. Not at all. And the fact that even at this distance, and in the candle light, Lee could tell that Tarin's eyes had faded to white only added to the confirmation that he was about to do exactly what she had feared since the moment he had agreed to the 'reading'.
"Tarin," Lee said slowly, trying to make her voice sound authoritative despite the slight wobble to it. Maybe if he stopped here, they'd be able to convince David it was nothing more than the parlour tricks he thought they performed.
"A dog? I don't do parlor tricks kiddo." Tarin defensively argued. David unbuttoned his jacket and took a seat right across the table. He noticed a crystal ball on the table, their was definitely a comment to be made but David didn't. He saw Tarin concentrating hard on something, and for a brief moment it was actually kind of inspiring seeing vulnerability in humanity.
David focused on Tarin as Tarin focused on his energy. Ironically David's energy seemed to be fading, as he felt a little light headed and hungry. The air was getting thick, and the tension between the table, very tense. It appeared that smoke and fog were slowly surrounding, the walls were closing in and the temperature was getting hotter as David sat upright in his chair.
Just as David thought this illusion was at its peak, three human like apparitions started to form around his chair. David clinched his fist as the spirits fully took shape. Tarin then showed a side that David didn't know existed in him. "Asking for a reading with skeletons in your closet?" Tarin said with an almost demonic look in his eyes.
The spirits began to moan and wail, it almost sounded like they were crying for help. David couldn't believe what he was witnessing. It seemed like this was really happening, but at the same time David was still skeptical. He looked around the room to see where the projector was, then his eyes made contact with the crystal ball. The raised dead were growing stronger, but for a moment David couldn't help but second guess this charade. Maybe this was all an illusion, maybe he was projecting the ghosts thought the crystal ball, or somewhere else in the room. Then it hit him, this seemed too real to be anything but true. Maybe, just maybe Tarin was a mutant. Maybe he could conjure up the dead, and maybe Lee was in danger of this jack ass, or maybe Lee was in on the whole ordeal.
The adrenaline was rushing through Davids body with this unreal experience, but he wanted to see more. His only chance was to piss Tarin off even more, "Sweet holograms ghost whisper, but you'll have to do better than that."

If Tarin had been irritated before, aggravated even, now he was absolutely pissed. Not only had this punk decided it was a good idea to come in here and flirt with Lee, then mock him, but he didn't even have the good grace to be terrified. Frankly Tarin was sick of the guy's attitude, who was he anyway?
Tarin fed the spirits a little more power and wished the guy had brought one in with him. It would have been so satisfying to see the look on David's face when he realized he was looking at someone he thought to be dead.
The spirits Tarin was conjuring were pretty much harmless, too weak to cause any real damage to anyone, but Tarin knew how they missed their sense of touch. They could probably feel now and if David had not been able to see them clearly before, he definitely could now. He could probably feel them too, they were petting his hair and a young woman was trying to hold his hand.
"I wouldn't mock something you know so little about." Tarin said, glaring through narrowed eyes as he felt the two-way link with the spirits strengthen. Looking up at the doorway though, and seeing the look on Lee's face made him reign himself in and he pulled back slightly, forcing the spirits away from him and weakening the bonds considerably. Nobody would be able to see them ow besides him.
Standing suddenly and stridin to the far wall, Tarin flipped the lights in the back room on and crossed his arms, carigned that his demonstration hadn't unsettled the other man more. "At any rate. I think it's time you were going. Lee and I have plans for the afternoon and it seems as if your business here is completed. We'll call that session a demonstration, it's on the house." The smile on Tarin's face wasn't a nice one, but he realized now that he'd probably taken things a little bit too far.
Even as she saw the spirits form and close in around David, Lee had to fight to not back up. Though she was pretty sure that Tarin had control, that the spirits wouldn't actually be able to hurt any of them, actually seeing them there still made Lee uneasy.
But even beyond that general uneasiness (possibly even still bordering on fear) toward the spirits, Tarin was actually showing someone what he was able to do, what his powers did.
Lee honestly couldn't believe that Tarin was doing this. Sure, he had been jealous, though again for absolutely no reason. And yes, David hadn't exactly been the most courteous or polite to Tarin, but that didn't give him a reason to do this. What he was doing now was dangerous. Even if Tarin had complete control over the spirits, the fact was Tarin had revealed himself to this guy, had just shown himself as a mutant.
But David's reaction, especially with how close the spirits were, with how, at least from her distance, they looked to be touching him, was very shocking. Not only did he not appear scared, but he was joking, still acting like this was nothing but a hoax even now.
At least at this point, Tarin seemed to have come to his senses, and stopped, making the spirits fade from sight. But the damage had already done even if David seemed to be joking and teasing about it. Still, Lee wasn't able to make her way out of the doorway.
David felt as if he were strapped down into his chair. The spirits were now molesting his hair and face, he even felt one grasping his hand. There was something going on here that was way beyond human vs. mutant. Tarin was meddling with the dead. David would have normally used his powers to stop this act of madness but under the circumstances he was too much in shock to even move a muscle. "I wouldn't mock something you know so little about." Tarin said as the spirits grew more and more physical. Then something peculiar happened, Tarin actually stopped the spirits from the physical contact, and eventually disappearing altogether. Though David did not notice any reason for Tarin’s change of heart, he did notice the vibe went from revenge to, satisfaction. David felt a rush go through his body as if a huge weight had been lifted off his chest as soon as the spirits vanished. Tarin then stood from his seat and backed to the wall. His hand turned the switch of the light and just like that, the session was over. "At any rate. I think it's time you were going. Lee and I have plans for the afternoon and it seems as if your business here is completed. We'll call that session a demonstration, it's on the house." Tarin said with that satisfied look, almost as if he enjoyed the feeling of the power he just had. David wiped his eyes as they re-adjusted from the light. He pretty much ignored Tarin’s request for him to leave. “So you’re a mutant?” David asked, already being convinced in his head. He didn’t bother getting up, he had no intention to. “Your metaling in things way beyond the norm here…” David finally looked up at Tarin ”but I’m sure you already know that.” Tarin looked annoyed, David didn’t care. “So where do you stand Tarin, do you fight for what’s right, or are you hiding in these four walls until you become what you control?” David cracked his knuckles.

Tarin was actually starting to get a little irritated with Lee. He knew she was mad at him for showing his powers off, but she was the one who had brougth a complete stranger into their place of business. A complete stranger who couldn't take a hint the size of the ESB and get the hell out.
Tarin had honestly pulled out all the stops trying to phase the kid, scare him into running like hell out of the shop, possibly crying, or possibly after having pissed his pants. It hadn't worked and part of Tarin wondered what the hell the kid was playing at. Part of him was honestly worried, who would be this confident, or stupid, in a situation like this other than someone who had a backup plan?
There, he said it, Tarin's eyes narrowed at the man who was standing several feet away, "Nobody said that." Tarin said with a nasty smirk on his face, "It was all smoke and mirrors, right kid?" he added and laughed softly, "Run on home now..." he said, dropping his last hint.
David hadn't had enough though, he just had to go on and speak, and suddenly Tarin knew exactly how Rupert must have felt when Tarin put his foot in it the other day. Unluckily for David though, Tarin didn't have Rupert's apparently rock solid self control. Maybe the kid didn't know how sore a topic it was for him, being a coward, hiding and not doing the right thing. Tarin did the right thing most of the time. This was not one of those times.
Tarin stepped forward and before he really knew what he was doing, his right arm was swinging and making firm contact with David's jaw. "You son of a bitch..." he growled, waiting for a reaction, it would be awesome to see how he reacted to that...maybe he'd get the hint.
Even after Tarin had gotten up and turned the lights on, David didn't seem to be reacting like Lee would have expected. He was simply sitting there, looking at Tarin. Not moving, but it didn't seem to be a look of fear on his face. Or even as much shock as Lee would have expected. What was up with this guy? She had started freaking out at less than what had just happened the first time she had seen the spirits.
But even after Tarin pressed, again, the idea that it was time for David to leave, he kept sitting there. And then he opened his mouth.
Damn, damn, damn, Lee thought, eyes darting between Tarin and David. Why the hell had Tarin done this? David didn't stop there, though; he kept speaking, even after Tarin denied David's accusation.
As David finished speaking, Lee saw the change on Tarin's face. She hadn't seen that look very often, almost never, in fact, but it looked remarkably similar to how he had looked during the bad part of their Halloween night out. Lee took a step forward, about to stop Tarin before he could do anything; she had lots of time for her to be able to get there, but she stopped herself after that one step. To step in like that, especially with Halloween firmly in her mind, would not only make Tarin mad at her, she knew, but it would also reveal her as a mutant. Something she was loath to do unless absolutely necessary.
She had to do something, though. She couldn't simply stand there and watch Tarin hit some guy without any sort of visible reaction. "Tarin!" She exclaimed. "Stop it!"
David stood from his chair and leaned on the table a little while Tarin made it clear he wanted David gone. "Nobody said that, It was all smoke and mirrors, right kid? Run on home now..."
"What are you afraid of Tarin? Afraid I'm going to expose you and your, little shop of horrors?" David took a step toward Tarin and continued to play with fire. He knew his constant head games lit the fuse, and it was only time before Tarin's temper exploded. "...or maybe, just maybe, your just so jealous, you think Lee's gonna leave you...old man"
Just as David got the words out of his mouth Tarin had stepped forward and cocked his fist back, releasing all of his anger and frustration onto David's jaw. As David stumbled backwards he heard Tarin call him a son of a bitch. David shook his head to get the stars out of his eyes, he also could taste the faint flavor of blood coming from the inside of his lip.
"Tarin! Stop it!" A voice came out of nowhere, it was Lee. She seemed like she a mixture of concern and anger in her voice, tho she could have been a little scared. David finally looked up at this sucker punching antagonist, he noticed that Tarin's attention was on Lee, a perfect time for David to make a move.
With out a motion David's entire body completely vanished from sight. He wiped the blood from his lip and took two quiet steps back toward Tarin. Before Tarin could even fathom where David went, David connected a hard fist exactly where he received one moments ago. "Hows that for a sucker punch!?" David said with anger and sarcasm as his body slowly appeared. He grabbed Tarin by the shirt and pulled him close. "The power you possess is not for grieving soccer moms and postal workers. Your making a cheap living off of the dead, when you could be..." David looked over at Lee, then back at Tarin letting go of his shirt and backing up a couple of steps. "...foreget it, you just a coward who tells ghost stories, you'll never be anything great." David looks back at Lee, "but obviously your okay with that"
