The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"It's the most wonderful time of the year," Locke half sung to himself as he put a couple of water bottles into his backpack. Christmas came earlier every year to stores. Today was the first day that he had caught a Christmas carol playing in CVS and that stupid song was stuck in his head now. At least he agreed with the title, but for a different holiday. Halloween was his favorite by far. At seventeen he might be considered too old to be Trick or Treating, and he had to agree that he was pushing the limit. But other than the year when he was in rehab Locke hadn't missed a Halloween. One of the few pictures that he had of his mother was of her stomach with the baby bump that was him. It had been painted orange with yellow facial features.
Last year had been a disaster. This year Locke planned on having a good Halloween before he was officially too old to go out. Strange that an introvert like himself wasn't choosing to stay inside and hand out candy. Wearing his pig mask and the coat that Eaan had sent him Locke felt like a little bit of a repeat. Why should he waste time and money getting a new costume when his Jigsaw one totally rocked? Locke slipped a couple of fun sized Kit Kat bars into the backpack. He wasn't exactly suspicious, but he did believe that like brings like as far as candy went.
Locke continued to hum the carol to himself, convinced that he was alone when suddenly something felt odd. Light footsteps moving lightly and quickly. He turned and saw what he was convinced was a small child trying to sneak out. "Hold it right there," he said, voice grumbly and gruff. Big brother mode activated.

Scrounging up a costume had been difficult enough-- with such limited resources, Chase had to get very creative. With some help from the older children at Xavier's, a costume for Chase was concocted. An older boy had an old plastic scythe and Grim Reaper's robe from a few years prior, and was willing to part with it for Chase's sake. And, he'd only worn it once, so Chase's residue took hold quite rapidly.
Now, Chase had never been trick-or-treating-- weather was usually too foul by October's end to go out, or if it wasn't, Chase was never allowed to go trick-or-treating. He got the gist of it, though-- go door-to-door, say "Trick or treat," and people gave you free candy. Thus, empty pillowcase in-tow, tge young boy was trotting out of Xavier's unaccompanied.
>> "Hold it right there."
Chase was frozen by the command that had practically been growled at him. He turned to face a much older boy in a pig mask. Chase didn't like it. The older boy sounded mean.
"Yes?" Chase inquired, his voice quiet and uneasy.

The kid looked and sounded guilty to Locke. The quiet voice practically screamed to him "I'm going to go do something I probably shouldn't". Chris and Mai had tried getting away with things before and Locke caught them each time. Granted they were under the age seven and there wasn't much they could get into when he was watching them but still, kids will find the one thing that can make a mess. "You aren't going out like that," he told Chase firmly. The pig mask was slid back so he could get an unobstructed look at the kid. "No flashlight? No chaperone? You crazy kid or just reckless?"
The last question was asked with a softer tone. Halloween was a night to get scared, but Locke didn't really want the kid terrorized by him. Really it was just concern for the kid who looked to be around the same age as his siblings that had made Locke's voice go gruff before. If the kid wanted to go trick or treating he could. It was his right as someone still in elementary school. But if he was going to do it, he'd have to do it safely and right.
"Relax," he said with a sigh, "I'm not going to rat you out to Ms. Taylor. But seriously, it can be dangerous out there on Halloween, you shouldn't go alone."

>> "You aren't going out like that-- No flashlight? No chaperone? You crazy kid or just reckless?"
Chase had spent plenty of time out alone on the streets. No chaperone and, after the Lizard Man's instruction, no flashlight. If he had been a runaway, on his own, for that extent of time, he really didn't need a chaperone, right? Chase had never had one before.
"I didn't know I needed all of that," the little Grim Reaper murmured. The older boy had taken his mask off, so Chase removed his hood, which hid his face. His human-face exposed, Chase's gaze pointed towards the ground. His eyes were swimming with a shades of guilt, "I've never gone trick-or-treating."
>> "Relax-- I'm not going to rat you out to Ms. Taylor. But seriously, it can be dangerous out there on Halloween, you shouldn't go alone."
"More dangerous than the other nights?" Chase squeaked. Miss Gemma would not have been happy. Chase's concern was that the boy in the pig-mask would have told on him. Chase flushed in confusion and disappointment. He didn't know of anyone who could accompany him. And, if he couldn't think of someone, he couldn't go trick-or-treating.
"You aren't going to make me go back to my room, are you?" Chase inquired, letting his eyes flick to the older kid's face before returning to the ground. He couldn't help but look concerned. And, you would have to be completely heartless, or wholly unaware, not to see that Chase was practically begging the older boy to let him tag along, "Are you going trick-or-treating?"

Never gone.."Oh hell no," Locke said, not even noticing he had said something that he would scold Chris and Mai for. There was no way that the kid couldn't have gone trick or treating. Unless he had lived in a cave all his life or never went to school he had to have done something. Malls had trick or treating during the day all over the place right? Who doesn't go trick or treating when they're young?
But as hard as Locke found it to believe the kid was telling the truth, it seemed harder to think that he was lying. For one the kid was using a pillowcase. While the traditional carrying mechanism for candy carrying, it was impractical. There wasn't a handle, so once the pillowcase started filling up carrying it became a hassle. It was better to use a backpack or the plastic buckets drug stores sold. Even a plastic grocery bag was good. Grocery bag had the benefit of not risking chocolate stains on something that you had to wear or sleep on.
Next was the kid being by himself. Trick or treating was fun, but only when you had someone with you was it a real blast. Half the fun was sitting down with a friend afterwards and trading your junk stuff for the good things. If you go just by yourself you'll be stuck with raisins and Tootsie roll pops and miss out on the Crunch bars and small bags of M&Ms.
Finally the kid didn't have anything really that would help him to stand out. Although the Jigsaw coat was long and black Locke had a flashlight and a fairly light colored backpack to be seen from behind. The pig mask kept his front safe. "You've never heard of people slipping razors into candy bars or putting rat poison on the apples? I mean that's avoidable, you got to check the candy before you eat it anyways, but a kid like you? You're just begging for someone to swipe your bag unless you got some sort of power to keep that from happening. With masks on creeps and freaks can go around and snatch up kiddles. Yeah, it's dangerous, maybe even more than any other night of the year. That's why you don't go alone unless you're a big guy like me." Or you can sense when someone is sneaking up on you and can bury them up to their necks in the sidewalk...
He sighed and took the mask off before crouching so he'd be on eye level with Chase. "I'm not your big brother, or your parent, or a teacher. I can't send you to your room, but I can make sure you get to go trick or treating." Locke offered Chase a smile, an honest one that usually only came out around his brother and sister. "Give me your bag," he said, holding out his hands, "Any food allergies?" Always best to check that before giving a kid anything that they could eat. He took Chase's pillowcase, slung his backpack off his back, then emptied it of his few Kit Kat bars. "First lesson, never start with an empty bag. People think that you're going around for a second time and skimp out on what they give you. Always keep a piece or two with you. I'm Locke by the way, and I'm going to be keeping my eye on you tonight."

"Oh... what?" Chase murmured uncertainly, frowning. Was it something he had said? Obviously, it wasn't something that the older boy liked, for he started ranting on him. Razors in candy, rat poison on apples? "People would... do that?"
And he continued to speak of older kids stealing his candy, or people kidnapping Chase. Chase began to feel less and less enthusiastic about going out-- he wasn't big and intimidating like the older kid-- maybe it would be better if he went back to his room and stayed there for the night? It would be a lot easier to do that than to go out and risk getting killed... If the older boy was trying to scare Chase into not leaving, he was doing a rather good job. Perhaps after all these years, his parents were really just protecting him? He let his gaze flick from the older boy to the ground.
The older boy assured Chase that he wasn't going to get sent to his room, and Chase nodded hesitantly, returning the smile shyly. He didn't need to send him off, now-- now Chase wasn't too sure about going out. The kid requested his bag, and Chase forked it over. hesitantly.
"No allergies," Chase confirmed, confused. The older boy spilled a few candy bars into his bag, and began educating Chase on Halloween etiquette. Chase listened closely, his gaze, meandering from the bag to the older boy's face, "I didn't know it was that complicated."
>> "I'm Locke by the way, and I'm going to be keeping my eye on you tonight."
"You are? Are you sure?" Chase inquired, smiling in spite of himself, before catching himself and glancing aside, "I'm Chase. Thank you."

Chase had been sufficiently frightened into realizing the dangers of going out alone. "I don't know if anyone's ever really done that, but you never know. Anyways you always want to check the candy anyways." It hadn't been his intention to turn the kid away from Trick or Treating. His heart warmed though to see Chase's shear excitement when he realized that Locke was going to take him out. There really wasn't anything better than making a kid's day.
"Trick or Treating is serious business. The second lesson, whenever someone gives you candy say thank you and Happy Halloween. It's not like it's bad luck, just bad manners." Locke knew how easy it was for a kid to forget their p's and q's when given a handful of candy over and over. He'd seen it happen with Chris and Mai, and he knew that they knew their manners. "Next we got to give you some visibility. Backpack or flashlight?"
With a critical eye Locke studied Chase's costume. The important thing wasn't if the costume looked realistic enough. As long as Chase had gone through the trouble of finding a costume he qualified for candy in Locke's book. The issue Locke had was the thickness of the fabric. "You gonna be warm enough?" he asked. To Locke there was no such thing as being too warm.

Chase nodded his head quickly. He remembered Russell and Abigail doing similar things when they went trick-or-treating-- spreading all of their candy out on the dining room table, while Laurence and Stella combed through it all and filtered out the "bad" candy from the "good". Chase had never known that they were poisoned, though.. Check candy before eating it-- okay, he could remember that.
Next, Locke went into the etiquette once again, talking about how, after you said "trick or treat", and got the candy, you were supposed to thank them and wish them a Happy Halloween. Again, didn't sound too difficult-- Chase was an incredibly well-mannered child, or so he had been told. He was reflexively like that. Then, there was the matter of visibility-- Locke asked if he wanted the backpack or the flashlight. Chase replaced his hood, glancing between the two.
He'd have to carry each of them all night, and while the backpack would get heavy fast, he wouldn't be able to pick up residues through the robe. Chase looked at his hands, which were hidden by the sleeves of the robe, yet unprotected by gloves-- the flashlight would have skin-contact all night, which meant an entire night of resisting the urge to turn into Locke.
"Umm, backpack?" Chase requested. Chase made a mental note that he should really invest in gloves until he could better control object-based shifts. Locke then turned his attention to the issue of keeping warm. Would Chase be warm enough in what he was wearing? Chase smiled behind the hood, and bobbed his head. Through his time on the streets, warmth had become less and less of an issue. The chill only bothered him when he was hungry, and at that moment, he wasn't very hungry.
"I'll be fine," he assured the older boy, peeling back the tattered, gossamer black sleeve to reveal the sleeve of a dark waffle-knit hennley underneath. Chase smiled from behind his hood, which could be heard in his tone of voice, "I don't get cold easily."

Chase was cute like Chris and Mai. He was getting so pumped about something that Locke thought everyone did. When it came to girls Locke floundered about like a fish. They never did what he expected and he could never get the right words or actions to happen. Kids he could handle. Maybe it was because of how his dad had taken care of him, or maybe it was because he had such an active part in the raising of his siblings. "Backpack it is then!" he said cheerfully and handed it over to Chase. "Let me know if it gets too heavy ok?"
When Chase said he would be warm enough Locke looked at him like lobsters were crawling out of his ears. No coat when it was this chilly out and he'd be warm enough? Was Chase from the North Pole? Sure he had on a long sleeve shirt but that cloak couldn't be all that warm. Big brother instinct told him to tell Chase to grab a jacket. But as he had said earlier Locke didn't really have the weight to make Chase do what he told him. "You sure? I mean it might get colder."

"Okay!" Chase agreed, his voice crisp and excited. Chase took the backpack eagerly and wriggled his way into it so that both straps rested on his shoulders, getting more and more pumped as Locke shifted from instructional phase to trick-or-treating phase. Who wouldn't get pumped about free candy? He bobbed his head energetically as Locke told him to make sure and let him know if the bag got too heavy. Were they really going to get that much candy?!
And, a big kid was talking to him-- and not the same way that older kids normally talked to little kids. Not patronizing, but as if they were equals. Chase showed off his longsleeves beneath, and Locke didn't seem convinced. Perhaps Chase wasn't a good judge of this, perhaps he was too excited, or perhaps he was trying to seem tougher to the older boy.
"I'm really sure," he avowed, Chase sighed, starting to get impatient as he reiterated, "I don't get cold easily. It's really cold, where I come from." This might not be entirely true. He was really skinny. But, if he got cold, he wouldn't whine about it-- just shiver and keep quiet.

He knew it! Chase was from the North Pole. Well, maybe not the North Pole, but it had to have been someplace extremely cold to not be bothered by the weather outside. Or it could be that Locke’s coldness threshold was set absurdly low. To Locke there was no difference between spring and the dead of winter. Unless it was above seventy he wasn’t a happy panda. As much as Chase insisted that he’d be warm enough Locke still felt that a shirt, no matter the sleeve length, wasn’t suitable. The poor kid was practically dancing in place so eager was he to get going.
And though he was older and really should be more patient, Locke wanted to get started just as badly. Chris had what Locke meant to carry his candy, and with a kid to chaperone he wasn’t going to Trick or Treat for himself. It was one thing to ask for candy when you’re a teen by yourself, another to ask for it when there’s a kid who clearly should get the sugar. Back in San Francisco it didn’t make much of a difference. After taking his brother and sister out he could easily go out on his own. Or, if they were feeling generous, Chris and Mai might share with him. The important thing though was that thrill of going around at night and knocking on strangers doors. It was dangerous and any other night of the year you wouldn’t want to do it unless there was an emergency. And the best part of it? You get rewarded for it!
”Alright then. If you get cold we’re turning back, no arguments,” Locke told Chase sternly, ”I’m not dealing with a hypothermic kid tonight.” He chewed his lip thoughtfully. Best option for getting lots of candy would be to hit up one or two apartment buildings. Lots of possible candy doors, plus they would be inside, which meant that Chase (really Locke) would be warm enough. ”Stay where I can see you ok? I haven’t learned your weight yet.”

>> "Alright then. If you get cold we’re turning back, no arguments... I’m not dealing with a hypothermic kid tonight.”
That simply motivated Chase further to not announce if he was cold, if he ever got to that point, seeing as he didn't want to run back up to the room. Chase didn't even know what hypothermia was, he simply rattled his head. Whatever it was, he'd try not to catch it-- though, had he known what it was, he might realize that it was a remote possibility.
>> "Stay where I can see you ok? I haven’t learned your weight yet."
Chase's little legs sped up obediently, climbing to a brisk walk, punctuated by the occasional skipping and running to catch up. He lifted his hooded head towards Locke, confused by his odd choice in words.
"Haven't learned my weight?" Chase echoed inquiringly, "What do you mean?"
He tagged along, following Locke's lead-- he didn't really know the area well, and didn't know the science to trick-or-treating. Plus, with Locke's peculiar caution to stay within his line of sight, Chase was none too eager to tary. Chase began to piece it together before Locke could answer-- that's right, it was a mutant-school.

"Is that part of your mutation?"
"Uh, yeah," Locke said and started chewing his lip again, "I can't see things right, so when my mutation kicked in it helped me out. I can see things when they touch the ground. So I haven't learned how you touch the ground." The explanation was as simple as he could get it and was something that he was trying to work out. For the moment Chris and Mai didn't care what exactly he did. Any tales that they told of their big brother the mutant was accomplished with noises that produced a great amount of spit. Until Locke learned how Chase walked, how the kid distributed his weight, he was going to have to keep an actual eye on him.
"And you Kid Death?" he asked, "Care to share what you do?" If nothing else Locke had learned that not everyone wanted to talk about their mutation. There were those like Chris where it was obvious, and he'd met some who it wasn't obvious what they did and they just didn't want to say anything.

Of course, the first thing a kid does when someone says that they can't see right, is that they look straight into the other's eyes. In this sense, his curiosity was shameless. He hadn't really looked at Locke's face up until now-- Chase was shy, and Locke still intimidated him. But, compelled by his inquiring mind, Chase found tge guts to look Locke dead in the eye.
One of his eyes was white and unfocused, while the other was blue. It was rude to stare, so Chase didn't. And, he was either too shy or too polite to ask any questions, even though he was full of them.
"And you Kid Death? Care to share what you do?"
Chase tried to recall Miss Gemma's word for it, before chirping, "Oh, that's easy-- I'm a human-shifter. At least, that's what Miss Gemma calls it."

The dead eye was a horrible embarrassment to Locke, his biggest insecurity and it's source was the darkest moment in his life. Anyone who had spent five minutes with the Californian would notice how frequently he adjusted his hair to cover his left eye. And yet Locke never hid it from Chris or Mai. Surprisingly when Chase started to stare at the dead eye Locke didn't immediately start brushing the hair into its usual place. "Accident. Don't run with scissors."
Locke picked up the speed. Chase might be fine with this cooler weather, but without the hood up or the pig mask on Locke's costume wasn't nearly as warm as it could be. Not that the cloak wasn't warm. It wasn't a flimsy thing bought from a store. Eaan had gotten his hands on a good one. Anyone else who had any sense would say that the cloak was warm, maybe a little too warm. "A human shifter? Pretty cool business you've got there Chase. You could be your own best friend if you wanted to."
Once inside the first apartment building Locke nodded at a door with a plastic cover on it. It was something you could pick up at a grocery store, a cheap piece of plastic that had a cartoon Frankenstein monster peeking out from an unrealistic purple door. "Ready for your first stop? Knock on the door, and when they open it say Trick or Treat. Oh and hold out the bag. Easiest way of getting candy and a classic. Can't go wrong."
