The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"No," Agnes answered with resolve, looking somewhat relieved over the fact that the inquiry was such a simple one. Sure, other questions touched Gina's mind, but none held more precedence than that particular one, none seemed to hold as much importance as that one question.
"Good!" Gina sighed, before Agnes could continue. She halted, though, when she realized that her friend was not yet finished. She hated mosquito hawks, and just the thought of them made her squirm. They also made her think of her eldest step-brother, who had once gotten into a very heated discussion with her about the proper name of a mosquito eater. They went back and forth for hours (Mosquito eater! No, Mosquito hawk!) Until her brother had given up and googled it. Turns out, the thing didn't even eat mosquito's, and was actually called a Crane Fly. Gina smiled in recollection. Didn't make her any less afraid of them.
"No," Agnes continued, shaking her head, "I'm sorry if this grosses you out, but all that... you know... comes out are roaches, flies and wasps. They really only come out when I'm upset or threatened though. They... try to protect me, I guess. Kinda like... little guardians."
Gina listened as Agnes articulated what her power was, explaining the bugs that she could expel and how they only came out when they were trying to protect her-- when she was angry or threatened.
"That's really cool," Gina murmured sincerely, taking a couple of chocolates in her little hand before leaning back and kicking her feet up on the couch. She wasn't too kean on having those kinds of bugs around, but they were tolerable-- spare the wasps, which could sting her. Gina'd never been stung by a bee and intended on keeping it that way. Roaches and flies were more of just a nuisance, and kind of dirty. She was less uneasy about them than wasps, though, and she was less uneasy about wasps than she was about spiders or mosquito hawks.
"I mean, cool for you, not for the person that would be threatening you," Gina clarified, beginning to stumble for an explanation. She'd seen the movie, and it hadn't been cool at the time. It had been frightening, "To have all these insectoid bodyguards to protect you when ya need them."
Gina wouldn't mind bodyguards. But how had it gotten so out of control at the museum? Gina hadn't caught wind about what had gone down, though she was sure that somewhere in the gossip-chains all throughout school, someone had to know. But instead, perhaps it would be the wiser to get it straight from the horse's mouth?
"Did someone try and attack you at the museum?" Gina inquired, "Is that why all the bugs were all swarming and such? To protect you?" That made much more sense than what the people who'd posted the video cracked it up to be-- more than just a mutant attacking people, but one acting in self-defense.
This was a moment where Agnes truly realized how me she cared for Gina. She was a sweet girl who always tried to look at the brighter side of life. There was little that disturbed her and she always attempted to bring that same smile and joy to whoever it was she was talking to. She knew that Gina was not only trying to make her feel better about her powers, but there indeed seemed to be some interest in what she could do. Granted it was not as cool as being a gargoyle, but Agnes was very slowly learning to live with them.
Still though, it was difficult. No mutant power could really be 100% easy. Look at Sveta Gawain/Maya, and Gina. All three of them had their own issues that they needed to deal with in order to live with their mutations: Sveta could not touch mutants, Gawain/Maya swapped genders, and Gina looked like a gargoyle all the time. At least Agnes had her mutation within her and she knew what triggered it. These others had slightly tougher times and yet they knew how to live their lives. They knew how to still find a way to be happy and not let the cards that life gave them bring them down.
Agnes hoped that one day she could gain that kind of appreciation for her own powers. In a way she kind of did already. If it were not for her mutation, who knows how that visit to the museum could have gone.
Then, as if reading her mind, Gina piped up another question, referring to the reason why she was on ViewTube in the first place…
>> "Did someone try and attack you at the museum? Is that why all the bugs were all swarming and such? To protect you?"
Agnes sighed as she felt every punch and kick and shove that that fat man had given her during their encounter all over again. The runaway still could not believe that she had survived something like that, she had even the power to make the smallest of differences. Maybe in the end it was worth it…
She sighed as she sat back against the couch and merely stared off into space, her memory of the event coming back. It was not a pleasant thought to think of but she could not simply ignore it either.
“I was attacked, yeah…” she muttered as she crossed her arms over her chest and sat back against the couch, just basking in the comfort of it. “There was a man…he could control bugs. He was making them attack everyone in the museum so…I figured I could try to do something. Apparently it worked,” smirked a little sadly. Because of what she did that man would never walk again. She shrugged a little after that. “Anyways…I…lost control back there and he got really hurt. It…took everything I had to pull them back.”
She sighed a bit heavily. Her powers could be so destructive when they wanted to be…and that terrified her a little.

" I was attacked, yeah... There was a man... he could control bugs. He was making them attack everyone in the museum so... I figured I could try to do something. Apparently it worked. Anyways... I... lost control back there and he got really hurt. It... took everything I had to pull them back." Her explanation of what had transgressed that day was punctuated by sighs and a sad smirk, paired with a shrug. Gina also eased back, though her wings wouldn't allow her to slouch all the way down.
"I knew it," she smiled, leaning back. She knew that Agnes wouldn't have done such a thing without some really good motivation. That seemed like motivation enough. But the idea that people would get so worked up about such a thing, about having her save them like that, seemed foolish.
"They should be giving you an award, for sticking your neck out like that," Gina avowed. She didn't care what the repercussions were. Things could have gotten a lot worse if Agnes had just taken off and not done anything, "You were a hero." But the ViewTube video was going to give her a bad reputation among anti-mutant supporters. It didn't look like she was saving them, it looked like she was at fault.
Gina clenched her jaw speculatively, leaned forward to retrieve some chocolates, and then reclined once more. She was going to get a ViewTube account after this and write a complaint. Explain the situation and give that short video clip a context-- people probably wouldn't listen, but it was worth a shot. Nobody deserved such misplaced infamy, particularly when they'd been trying to help.
>> "I knew it…They should be giving you an award, for sticking your neck out like that…You were a hero."[/i]
Agnes frowned as she sighed. She really did wish it were that simple. Yes, she had helped out a lot of people back there, but it was still a disturbing sight. Many of those who escaped the museum alive or unharmed, probably did not even realize that was what she was doing. All they knew was that insects were attacking everyone and when they looked upon her, they saw a mass of them swirling about, obeying her commands. That had to be terrifying enough for anyone to behold, but to see it while they were under attack? That must have been down right terrifying.
And deep down, Agnes really did not feel like a hero. Yes she used her powers, but she nearly lost control. She could have killed that man, she could have for all she knew. She was still waiting to hear from that MRC detective about what happened. All she hoped for was that she was not going to get in trouble with the authorities over it. Then again…how else could they take the attack?
Agnes turned back to Gina and gave her a small, albeit weak, smile.
“I wish I could see myself as the hero. But, when I look in the mirror, sometimes all I see is,” she muttered as she again inadvertently touched her own stomach where the brand was. The reminder that to some people she now and will always be… “A monster.”
She shook her head as she looked away and stared off into space. She hated being the downer of their little duo, but she could not help how she was feeling. Her powers were exposed on the internet, it was possible that her parents could find her, and everyone now seemed to notice and by divided about her. Some praised her abilities, others thought that she was just a walking plague. Not every mutant had it that hard. Yeah, Gina looked like a gargoyle, but she had one of the sunniest and loveable personalities she had ever seen! She still had time to make plenty of friends…
Agnes, on the other hand, did not care for people all that much. And unfortunately her demeanor showed it. With a control sigh, she turned back to Gina, reach of and ran a finger over her cheek. She would make sure nothing bad would happen to her. She promised herself that. Someone in the world had to keep smiling.
“Thank you Gina,” she whispered. “For at least looking past the bugs.”

Agnes smiled weakly. "I wish I could see myself as the hero. But, when I look in the mirror, sometimes all I see is this-- a monster." She touched her stomach again, as if she were once again about to be sick. Though Gina was ever the supportive friend, the corner of her mouth tugged downward in knowing distaste.
That was a personal problem. One with which Gina still battled, and therefore understood quite well-- trying to feel like a hero, but constantly being reminded by society that you're really just a monster. What could she say, that Agnes wasn't a monster? It would be like that all-too-common debate that occured among girls, both mutant and human alike.
"Oh my God, I'm so fat."
"No you're not! Have you looked at yourself? I'm so much fatter."
"No you're not, you're so skinny."
...and so on. Arguing over monstrosity vs. heroism would have been perpetual argument, over which there'd be no winner. Both would leave with their convictions, and frayed nerves. These were the thoughts that crossed Gina's head as Agnes spaced out and contemplated similar matters.
Though Agnes wouldn't think it, contrary to the differences in their outlooks, they had a fundamentally similar situation-- bad/nonexistent birth parents, and a mutation that was either disliked or a source of disgust, or accepted as interesting. Both girls faced the dilemma of avoiding religious psychopaths. The only real difference, on an emotional level, was that Gina was still wrapped in the blissful ignorance of youth, a shield which would eventually come to be pierced, if not shattered completely.
"Thank you Gina, for at least looking past the bugs," Agnes whispered, touching Gina on the face. Given any other situation, such a gesture might have been a little awkward, but Gina still smiled, a touch of exhaustion in her expression.
"We can't take anyone at face-value," she answered truthfully. It couldn't have been said any differently.
Agnes smiled a bit because she thankful to have a friend that was as understanding as her. It really was a stupid thing for the runaway to have said that she herself felt like a monster. They were both mutants, they both had to deal with fearful or irritated people due to their abilities, and both were definitely in need of each other. That was why Agnes was thankful to have the young gargoyle as both a friend and a sister. She never had siblings she cared so much for, only one and he disappeared a long time ago.
At least now this person, Gina, was real and sitting before her, and it looked like she was not going to be running away anywhere. Good, too many people have fluttered out of her life over and over again.
“Yeah, I guess that is a lesson that I need to learn,” she muttered.
It was true. Agnes did have trouble accepting people at face value. That was one of those byproduct lessons that she learned in the streets. When living in the alleys, people had to judge one another based on what they saw. If they didn’t, it could lead to some seriously bad circumstances. Agnes did not like to think about it, but it was an unfortunate truth about life. Too many times she watched people be succumbed because they did not know to judge the person they met as harshly as they could upon first seeing them. You had to do that if you wanted to stay alive.
But, not that Agnes was livings amongst mutants, in a place that did not shun her, where only a few made fun of her, she had to learn to lower her defenses a little. She was still stressed that she was on ViewTube, but at least she was here in this school where she was partially defended from people like her parents. She definitely had a better chance here than out in the streets.
With a groan, Agnes sat up a bit and snagged another small piece of chocolate from the container to enjoy. Things like chocolate were hard to come by in the alleys, well, at least decent enough to eat chocolate. Most of the ones she had come across were old, rotten, or stepped on; not the most appetizing of snacks. So she was glad she was able to savor the tasty treats now without having to worry about biting into a shoe tread.
Another bite and Agnes sat back. It was nice to simply enjoy a moment a silence, a second after a stressful and emotional time to gather her wits again. This was definitely what she needed and she was not going to trade it for anything in the world…
