The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>“I lived in the alleys six or seven months for me, before I came here. I guess…I guess I just expected more, coming here. I guess I thought that other students with powers would be more understanding to someone with a grotesque power like mine. Guess it doesn’t matter the type of person…no one is comfortable around bugs."
"Yeah" Maya smirked "Most people are not better just because they are mutants. They are not usually worse either... but kids are mostly just kids."
Six or seven months, huh? The girl knew a thing or two about survival. Maya doubted she would have lasted five years out there if she did not have the option of walking into comfortable rooms through mirrors...
>>"By the way…um…I’m sorry about that rumor. I had…only said it cause I was trying to throw the guidance counselor off track. I really…REALLY don’t want to sleep with you. I mean…my god…YOU. Heh…I’m more likely to win a beauty pageant with a swimsuit round then date you…”
"Me?" Maya echoed her, with a smirk playing on her lips. It was a relief to know that Agnes didn't really mean the whole 'making love' issue "Oh, you mean the half-lesbian thing. Yeah." she chuckled at her. The worst was over, she could tell it.
>> "Yeah…Most people are not better just because they are mutants. They are not usually worse either... but kids are mostly just kids."
Kids are kids. Agnes knew the meaning of that. After all she had gone to high school before she ran away from home. She knew the dynamics, she knew the bull and the backstabbing that went along there. One wrong move could get a young branded for life with a stupid nickname or a reputation. Hell, half the time Agnes had to participate in these types of bullyings just because she wanted to stay under the radar. The second you stood up to people like that was the second you were branded too…
Branded…
The word echoed in Agnes’ mind as she unknowingly brushed her hand against her stomach. She could feel the crucifix scarred into her skin forever there. Her parents own, personal brand of labeling someone for the rest of their life. The thought made a tear well up in the corner of her eye but Agnes was quick to shun it away. She could not waste her life feeling bad about that night at the drop of a hat.
Eventually she would have to move on…eventually…
>> "Me? Oh, you mean the half-lesbian thing. Yeah."
Maya’s words shook her from her musings. She paused for a second, unsure of what the mutant was referring too, then she remembered the last thing she had said. It was true, she really held no interest in dating, much less wanting to make love to Gawain. He was an arrogant, sly smirking, jerk that threw her into the lion’s den with that danger room session. At least she got to slug him for that. And to be honest, the whole gender-shifting thing did not alarm her as much as she figured it would.
Her parents could have had a field day with that one, but Agnes had always learned to try and be at least tolerant. Still though…it was a mutation, she knew what it was like to have an uncontrollable mutantion. At least Gawain/Maya owned up to theirs and learned how to live with it.
Maybe one day she would too.
She sighed as he reached up and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, shaking her head as she hid her sad smirk. “That doesn’t bother me, actually.” she just looked…defiantly sad. Like she knew some inevitable truth that would not be shaken from her. “Honestly, I’ve never, you know, done that. I doubt I will either…” Her musings made her looked more intently at the carpet. “Who’d want to kiss me knowing, you know, what’s inside?”
That was the saddest truth of all. Even if she could get a handle on her powers, she could not hide the fact of what she was forever. Eventually it would be found out…and who wants to kiss her knowing that at any second a fly or roach could go crawling up their nose?
Deciding to take the attention off her she shook the thoughts away and gave a small smile to Maya. "I take it that you've found someone?"
>>“That doesn’t bother me, actually. Honestly, I’ve never, you know, done that. I doubt I will either… Who’d want to kiss me knowing, you know, what’s inside?”
"Oh, ya'd be surprised" Maya smirked cheerfully "I know a girl who's got spiders crawlin' our of her mouth, and she likes them too. And she is... well. Guys seem to like her a lot."
Of course, Charlotte was a whole different level of crazy-creepy-crawly.
>>"I take it that you've found someone?"
"Yeah, I've got a girlfriend" Maya nodded, smiling just a little bit "She lives here too, I'll introduce to her later. She's a chameleon." she sat back on the couch, pulling her knees up to her chin.
"I thought I'd never find someone either" she admitted "Well, not someone who actually... knows both sides, of me. And Twy was quite freaked out when she found out... but, things worked out, eventually. Long story." she concluded "Ya can never know." she mused about for a while "For example, ya could date an adapted guy. Then the bugs would' bother him."
>> "Oh, ya'd be surprised…I know a girl who's got spiders crawlin' our of her mouth, and she likes them too. And she is... well. Guys seem to like her a lot."
Agnes arched her brow as Maya said this to her. Really? It was true that the runaway had heard stranger things in life, but still, that seemed a little out there. Then again, people have been known to enjoy the company of stranger things. She remembered the types of tirades her mother would go on, condemning all those sinful people who loved tattoos, piercings, strange hair and clothing, and worst of all that dirty Rap Music.
What was interesting about that was whenever her mother would go on a rant about that, Agnes was always quick to point out that the woman had pierced ears. That normally only achieved in getting her an angry look, but on more than one occasion it was a day without breakfast or lunch.
Agnes sighed…she hated her parents’ hypocrisy so much.
“Sounds like a lucky girl,” Agnes muttered.
>> "Yeah, I've got a girlfriend…She lives here too, I'll introduce to her later. She's a chameleon…I thought I'd never find someone either…Well, not someone who actually... knows both sides, of me. And Twy was quite freaked out when she found out... but, things worked out, eventually. Long story…Ya can never know."
“Well, congratulations for you.”
Normally, coming from her, this would sound like a condescending insult, but there was really nothing but honesty behind her words. She really was glad that someone like s/he could find someone to be understanding. After all, not many people take kindly to imagining being with the same sex, and here this mutant did not have a choice. Some days Gawain…some days Maya…that must have taken a hell of a lot of understanding…and time…
Still…it did make her smile.
Maybe there would be hope for her after all? Then again, it really was not just the insects within her body that disturbing, it was the fact that she was riddled with scars that really turned her off. That was one of the private things and, obviously, she did not just share it with anyone. She doubted most people could over look that…
>> "For example, ya could date an adapted guy. Then the bugs would' bother him."
Again, a confused look shot across Agnes face as she turned to look Maya over closely. “Adapted?” she said the word as if it were absolutely alien to her. “What is that?”
"People like the guidance counselor" Maya explained "They cancel out mutant powers around them. The first one I met, I fell onto her from a mirror when I walked too close." she smirked at the memory "She was not amused."
That was probably an understatement. Maya smiled a bit at Agnes. There was a thought somewhere in the back of her mind, wandering around; she was just not sure if she could say it out loud, or if it was not the time for asking questions like that. She just got away from a fight with Agnes without being punched and that was a win; maybe she should just quit while she was winning...
"Hey, Agnes" she said carefully "Mind if I ask you somethin' about your mutation?"
>> "People like the guidance counselor…They cancel out mutant powers around them. The first one I met, I fell onto her from a mirror when I walked too close… She was not amused."
“Really?” Agnes asked with earnest wonderment.
This whole time Agnes had just figured that the woman was nothing more than another mutant with the ability to cancel out her powers. But the fact that she had her own classification made Agnes a little curious. If the guidance counselor was not the only one with such an ability like that, she began to wonder how many people actually did? She never ran across anyone who could do that to her before. Most people she met were either mutants or they were humans. There was never a third option.
Still though, the possibility rang pretty loud in her mind. What were the odds she could meet someone who could tolerate her, was also an adapted, as well as look past her hideous scars? That was the biggest issue for her. Yeah, maybe there was someone who could look past her mutant ability, stranger things have happened, but the scars…it always came back to the scars…
Agnes hated the way they felt because no matter what they were always there. Even when she worn certain clothes, she could feel them as they grazed against them or catching up an upraised bit of skin. It was a horrible feeling to know that even without her mutation, she would still consider herself a monster. That was just the way of the world.
Then a silence covered them and Agnes had wished she could think of something to say. Something to get her off the topic of her abilities and her scars and her past…
Thankfully Maya seemed to have something to say…
>> "Hey, Agnes…Mind if I ask you somethin' about your mutation?"
An eyebrow rose and all she could do was sigh a little. She had to learn how to talk about these things without getting upset. She had to own up to her abilities…
“Sure,” was all she whispered as she waited paitently.
Agnes gave her permission to ask. Maya cleared het throat.
"I don' want to offend you or anyting" she said, not sure how to breach the suject "And it's gonna sound silly. But, umm. Do you actually like bugs?"
It did sound silly. Maya chucked, and shook her head.
"Sorry, it didn't come out right. What I meant is, many animals are misunderstood. Like, a ot of people are afraid of spiders, but the way Charlotte talked about them, they are actually pretty amazing creatures. I and am fairly sure the same goes for roaches, and the lot."
She paused. It was still not quite right, even though she was honest about every word.
"What I mean is, mutations are natural. There is always a reason why someone has a certain power..."
>> "Sorry, it didn't come out right. What I meant is, many animals are misunderstood. Like, a ot of people are afraid of spiders, but the way Charlotte talked about them, they are actually pretty amazing creatures. I and am fairly sure the same goes for roaches, and the lot."
Agnes started back at Maya with confusion, some slight irritation and just bit of embarrassment. She really thought about the question because it did seem fairly innocent: did she like bugs before? Some of the people in her comic books were some of the best when it came to “owning” to what they could and could not do. But real life was not a comic book. Sometimes it really was not always easy accepting what you could do.
The runaway sat there, gnawing on her bottom lip as she thought this question over. Did she really enjoy her powers? Even so, what triggered this type of mutation in her? Maya seemed to anticipate this and outright ask…
>> "What I mean is, mutations are natural. There is always a reason why someone has a certain power..."
Great…that sounds pleasant.
If the universe decided what type of mutant power someone obtained, then what was the reasoning behind her powers? Did she really have such an affinity for bugs? Did she walk around pretending to be the biggest queen bee in the place? Was she a shelter and nurturer for a group of students….though never for herself? Whatever the case, it was important for her to realize that this was now a part of who she was. She simply could not forgo what she could do anymore. It was not because she simply did not want to. It was more that and she was extremely tired attempting to come to terms with it.
She sighed as she shrugged. “I…really don’t know. I never gave them much thought,” she said with a sigh as she leaned back in the bench just plain shook her head. “They saved my life more times than I can count, but I appreciate them for it. And yet, at the same time, they can be a real pain in the butt, as you saw last time. I can’t always control them. Whenever I try to it is a complete and utter struggle.” she could only shrug once more as she again returned to Maya’s earlier question. “I never did anything before I became a mutant that warranted me ‘liking’ insects. It’s not like I kept a collection of them or anything. Still did not make me very popular at school.” she chuckled as she glanced to Mirror again. “Thank you for not making fun of my abilities. I appreciate it so much.”
The runaway then slowly leaned over, held her breath as she leaned in and planted a very soft, very tended kiss on her cheek. She was beginning to appreciate s/he much more as the days rolled on.
>>“I can’t always control them. Whenever I try to it is a complete and utter struggle. I never did anything before I became a mutant that warranted me ‘liking’ insects. It’s not like I kept a collection of them or anything. Still did not make me very popular at school. Thank you for not making fun of my abilities. I appreciate it so much.”
Maya smiled a bit when Agnes kissed her on the cheek. She was a cute girl after all, even though she did a great job hiding it.
"You're welcome" she nodded "An' I don't think they are funnier than any other mutation. I've seen a few." she chuckled.
Looking at Agnes, she thought about what she said about the bugs. She was right, it did not make sense that way; but she was sure it had to make sense on some level. Then, her eyes lit up with an idea.
"Hey Agnes, how much do you even know about them?" she asked curiously, pointing at her chest "I mean, ya said ya did not particulaly like bugs before. But, what if knowing them is the key? Maybe if ya learned more about how they behave and what they need and stuff, maybe that would lead you to controlling them..."
>> "Hey Agnes, how much do you even know about them? I mean, ya said ya did not particulaly like bugs before. But, what if knowing them is the key? Maybe if ya learned more about how they behave and what they need and stuff, maybe that would lead you to controlling them... just a thought."
Agnes sighed in a disheartened way. She really did not like the way that Maya was looking right now. She was contemplative about Agnes’ powers and the last time she, when she was Gawain anyway, looked like that she was in the scary room and there were zombies shambling around everywhere. That look on her face now could only mean one thing…
“Ugh, let me guess,” she muttered. “Another Danger Room session?”
It was not that she was opposed to learned more about her powers, she was just less inclined to have to go through another danger room session where she was pushed to the brink and nearly killed by holograms. There was nothing fun in that. Then again, such a place as that was not meant for fun. It was supposed to help mutants delve further into their abilities, but whenever she thought about it, she felt a small bit of anxiety. What if what she learned about her abilities she simply did not like? Who knows if she would ever get control over her powers!
Another sigh and she cast a glance over at Maya. She had to admit that she rather enjoyed the more feminine look of the mutant rather than her/his male counterpart. That devilish grin, that smart mouth, all she wanted to do was smack him across the face every time she thought about it! But Maya was different. Funny considering they were both still the exact same person. Maybe she just got along better with females than males.
That was even more odd considering how her own mother treated her. Ah well, that would have to be an argument that the runaway would save her later therapy sessions.
Deep in thought for a moment she sighed as she turned to Maya. She was wracking her brain, trying to pull out every detail she could think off.
“Um…I dunno if it helps but…” she gnawed on her lip in thought again. “The roaches…uh, when I release them, they…circle around my feet…the flies they split in half. One group circles my head, the other joins the wasps. The wasps…” she shook her head, irritated by this… “They…they throw themselves at…well…whatever is closest.”
The inner workings of bugs. Would she ever get it?
>>“Ugh, let me guess. Another Danger Room session? Um…I dunno if it helps but… The roaches…uh, when I release them, they…circle around my feet…the flies they split in half. One group circles my head, the other joins the wasps. The wasps… They…they throw themselves at…well…whatever is closest.”
Maya nodded. She could tell Agnes was not thrilled about the idea of a DR session. Few people ever were.
"Nah, actually I was thinkin' more along the lines of library research or somethin'." she admitted with an innocent smirk "I mean, if you wanna go back to the DR, that can be arranged too, but I'd suggest you do some homework first. Books, Internet, the like. The more you find out about how these things behave... umm, I mean, naturally, the more you can understand why they do whatever they do, ummm, around you."
>> "Nah, actually I was thinkin' more along the lines of library research or somethin'…I mean, if you wanna go back to the DR, that can be arranged too, but I'd suggest you do some homework first. Books, Internet, the like. The more you find out about how these things behave... umm, I mean, naturally, the more you can understand why they do whatever they do, ummm, around you…Does that even sound like it makes sense?..."
The idea of another danger room session did not sound appealing at all to the young runaway. After the last time, she would rather stay as far away from that room as she could, especially if Gawain was going to be in it. But she could not be picky anymore. If she was going to discover more about her powers to the point of getting some control over them, she definitely could not waste her time being scared of fake zombies. Even if it did mean that she was going to be bruised up a bit. It was just one of those trials she would have to go through.
But then she heard that magical word…research. That was one of things she was actually pretty good at. She knew how to dedicate her time to searching, seeking, and finding the answers. Maybe Maya had a point here. The only thing that will help her is to find out exactly what these insects she housed wanted. After all, she had no control of them. The only thing she knew was that they protected her…but why?
These insects, so small and so primal always threw themselves at whatever dared to threaten her. Was she little more than a house for them, or was it something else? Was there just something about her that pulled not only them, but the other alien bugs to her like some beacon? The questions were numerous and Agnes knew that with time she would find answers, it was being patient that would prove to be the problem.
Another glance to Maya and she nodded with a small smile.
“I think I’d do better with the homework than another Danger Room session with you,” she said honestly. “Besides, I’d hate to have to blacken your other eye out for sending line dancing dinosaurs or something at me next.”
She nodded as she took a long, steady breath. For a moment, the whole reason she was mad at Maya/Gawain began to slip away. Yeah, s/he blabbed, but she managed to get in a few good revenge hits with the marshmallow bag. Anyways, she would have to face her past eventually…maybe this was the push she needed.
Finally she muttered and gave Maya a sidelong look. “Again…thank you.” she whispered…and meant it. “I feel lucky to have an acquaintance like you.”
>>“I think I’d do better with the homework than another Danger Room session with you. Besides, I’d hate to have to blacken your other eye out for sending line dancing dinosaurs or something at me next.”
"Hmmm, line dancing dinosaurs. Now there's an idea." Maya smirked, trying to look serious and failing "Ya'd besurprised at the things that can show up in some DR sessions..."
Agnes seemed more relaxed with the idea of research than with the DR session; it would have been the other way around for Maya, but then again, she was a trickster, and it made it hard for her/him to sit around.
>>“Again…thank you. I feel lucky to have an acquaintance like you.”
"Ya're welcome" she smiled cheerfully "I'm glad you ended up here. Ain't as horrible as you'd think." she touched her own face lightly "And don't worry about the black eye. I get one every other day." she smirked "Usually not from girls though."
