The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was a fairly sunny afternoon and Andrew was had nothing to see to at the moment. After the whole three am debacle with Shin and Kealey he hadn't been feeling too friendly. Between the whole awkward affair with Kate, Shin and Kealey knowing, and everything else he was just a bit overloaded. As such he needed someplace quiet to sit and think. The kitchen was too public and he didn't want to be in his room at the moment. Eventually he settled on the library. Andrew didn't give any thought to the fact that the library was Kealey's domain. Still, it was bound to be a fairly quiet place to sit and try to clear his head.
And if that failed he could grab a book and ignore everything. That would work too.
Thirty minutes later that was precisely what Andrew had done. Sitting quietly and proved boring and made him rethink thoughts that he just didn't want to bother with. As such he'd pulled a random book off of the shelves and started to read. The book was ok. He hadn't even bothered to look at the title. It was something to do besides mope on a sunny afternoon at least.

The library was Kealey’s domain, and she more than reveled in the fact. When Sam had hired her, the library had been expansive…but in mild disarray. Students had been running it on a volunteer basis, and while their efforts had been obvious, they’d clearly not been consistent enough to have any sort of real organization. Those days were no more. Students could peruse the shelves with ease, and with her connections at the NYC Public library, Kealey had set up an exchange program for books. It was mostly one-way, since there was hardly anything the Mansion had that the Main Branch lacked…but it was incredibly beneficial for students taking upper level and advanced classes here at the Mansion. Kealey was thrilled.
Someone else wasn’t though…and the empath frowned as she worked her way through a small cart of books that needed sorted. They were kind of raining on her parade. As soon as the thought crossed her mind, Kealey frowned even more…now she was being unkind. This simply would not do! She set off in search of the source of all the mopey feelings.
Being an empath had its advantages…especially when looking for someone who was having a rough day, and it didn’t take Kealey long to find the culprit with his head buried in a book. Andrew. Kealey paused for a moment, and watched him read, digesting all the feelings running through him. There was more wrong than simple mortification over a kiss. Kealey had realized it when she and Shin had cornered Andrew in the offices at 4 am. She still felt bad about that too. They’d all been tired…and a bit emotionally strung out. The situation really hadn’t been fair…definitely not to Andrew.
”Hey…” she said, approaching with caution and a small, rueful, smile. Everything about her body language said, ’I’m not going to attack you with questions and accusations’ and she moved close so she wouldn’t have to speak loudly in the quiet of the library.

Andrew looked up from the main character grilling the villain for reasons why they did what they did when he heard someone address him. The voice was awfully familiar and Andrew almost cursed himself for not expecting her to show up. She was an empath and he probably felt like that mud puddle that ruins your suit right before a big interview to her extra sense. However she seemed unlikely to attack him with questions and accusations that he just didn't feel up to. He laid the book aside.
"Hey."
She asked how things were and Andrew had to appreciate that she wasn't just directly prying.
"Today's ok. Just thought I'd come here for some quiet and ended up reading a book."
He wasn't going to mention their last conversation until she brought it up. Unlike her and Shin he was quite willing to just run away from things and let them sort themselves out without him. Heck, that was why he was here in New York at all. Andrew was pretty good at running away.
"Have a seat. It is your library after all."
He smiled a half-hearted smirk at Kealey and toyed with the cover of the book he'd been reading absently.

Andrew said he’d come to the library for quiet, and Kealey nodded her head. It was a sunny day and the way the sun came through the windows made the large room warm even if it was getting colder outside all the time. ”It’s one of my favorite places.” she said honesty, shrugging her shoulders, ”Somehow it’s always warm in here.” Maybe it was heating…but Kealey preferred to think it was the sun.
Andrew offered her a seat, and Kealey slid into it, chuckling at his suggestion. ” I don’t own anything, this place owns me.” she said with a smile. He was uncomfortable, even after the initial small talk and it made a shock of guilt pulse through Kealey that was all her own. She and Shin really had treated him very unfairly.
”I know this is probably going to ruin the tenuous awkward small talk we have going on…” she said slowly and genuinely, ”But I’m sorry about the other night.” she paused and frowned, trying to find words that wouldn’t come out wrong but would get her message across.
”It was so late…and I was so off kilter, I think we overkilled a little. Especially in something that wasn’t our business.”
Kealey waited, wondering if she should go any further…she wanted to ask about everything she’d felt from Andrew in the office..but didn’t want to come across too pushy. Yes. She’d wait, and see how he handled the apology.

Andrew gave a shrug and slight smile to Kealey in response to her apology. It was sweet of her to apologize but then again that was one of her main characteristics wasn't it? At any rate he took the apology in stride. Not that he felt she needed to apologize. He was a coward and a source of trouble for his friends. There really wasn't any need for Kealey to apologize for that.
"Don't worry about it."
He wouldn't outright say it was fine. That would sort of be a lie considering his behavior wasn't fine at all. Honestly he was surprised she even still wanted to talk to him. He looked around the library. It was a nice place with the sun coming in like it was.
"I'm a coward. I wouldn't be here in New York at all if I wasn't. You don't need to apologize for trying to make sense out of that."
Running away was a lot easier than facing things. At least, that was Andrew's experience.

Andrew was so self-deprecating. Not in the way that made people cute and cuddly and made people happy and giggly because it was all in good fun. Andrew was self-deprecating in a way that made Kealey almost want to wince for him. She’d noticed it a little before, and chalked it up to a bad day or mildly low self-esteem, but this was more serious. He really believed the things that he was saying…she could feel it.
”But why…?” she asked quietly, shaking her head and frowning a bit in his general direction. ”How does that make things easier? Or better for you?” she asked with genuine curiosity.
”I’ve done my share of trying to run.” she said, then smiled a bit and shook her head, ”All it gets me is strange looks when I’m running back twice as fast.”

Andrew gave another shrug. He hadn't expected Kealey to understand it really.
"If I leave it alone and run away then as long as I don't think about it too much everything is fine."
That sounded really weak even to him but it was part of it. He frowned a little.
"I guess running is easier than facing it."
Which made it a little odd that he wanted to help people like he did. He was a coward but he would quite readily put his own life and safety on the line to help someone else. That was a lot less complicated than dealing with Kate or Verdy or the trial. Not to mention physical hurts tended to heal a lot quicker than emotional stuff. Which was yet another point in favor of putting it off in his mind.

”Sometimes you can’t run away though.” Kealey said with a frown, turning to look out the window as she mulled over Andrew’s words. ”Sure it’s easier at the time…and as long as you don’t think about it…but Andrew, at some point it’s all going to catch up to you.”
This probably wasn’t the Kealey Andrew was used to. That Kealey was sympathetic to the tee, and that’s the Kealey he’d needed before. That had changed though…this was unhealthy. Kealey knew she couldn’t fix the problem…but she could help, and Andrew didn’t need someone to hold his hand and tell him that everything was okay. Kealey knew it as much as she knew that he was able to see the holes in his own logic.
”You’ll never be able to help people until you can help yourself Andrew.” she said softly. Once they’d spoken about her role in the X-Men, and how every person had something they could contribute.
”I’m not just talking about Kate either.” she continued. ”Not that it’s the same situation…but Shin’s feelings about me came out at about the most inopportune time…and I ran a little.”
She smiled a little now, because everything had turned out okay, ”I don’t even what to think about what would have happened if I hadn’t faced it, and sorted things out.”
She shrugged, ”I know that’s not the situation with Kate…but you obviously want to be friends with her…and she’s twice as mortified as you are if she’s the one who initiated. You talk about wanting to help people…” Kealey trailed off and shrugged.
Besides, ”I don’t think that was it either. You know you can talk to me…” her slight smile turned a little conspiratory, ”I get how you feel. “

He listened quietly as Kealey went over why the running wouldn't help and it did make sense. He knew quite well that eventually he wouldn't be able to run. In fact he sort of laughed at how pathetic he was being.
"Jeez, here I am ready to run in and try and save people and yet little interpersonal stuff scares me."
Kealey offered to listen if he needed to talk. He probably did need to talk but as with every other time this sort of thing had come up he didn't want to inconvenience or burden someone else. Even if that person had just straight up offered. Her smirked a bit at her joke. This was Kealey. She'd probably end up finding out anyway or at least guessing.
"Which do you want first? Problem 1: Kate, with a bit more detail; Problem 2: Verdy; or Problem 3: the events that I'm going to be on trial for soon?"
Except of course that any one of them would end up leading into talk about the others. Well, except perhaps the shooting. The only thing it had in common with Verdy and Kate was that he'd told them both about it.

”Stop being so hard on yourself…” Kealey said when Andrew just agreed with her. It still wasn’t the squishy, hand-holding type of comfort that people usually wanted in this kind of situation. Again…it wasn’t what Andrew needed.
”Admitting it and doing the same thing over and over doesn’t get you anywhere Andrew.” She added, taking a deep breath and letting it out. ”I’m not trying to make you feel bad or anything…but I like you, and I care about what happens to you. All of this…” she gestured vaguely, ”Sets you up for bad stuff down the line.”
A moment later, though, it seemed that Andrew was going to open up. He asked what she wanted to know about first. Blond eyebrows rose at the word ‘trial’ and Kealey wondered who this ‘Verdy’ was. But she settled into the seat.

And there she went making him choose what he told her first. Andrew consciously decided not to comment on her statements previous. They'd just end up disagreeing further if he did. After all, he'd gotten on well enough this far with his current approach. He just didn't really see why he needed to bother to change it. Yeah there was the thing with Kate and Verdy was a whole other issue altogether. But that didn't change the fact that nothing had been irreparably damaged by his reluctance to deal with personal issues.
"I'll go ahead and leave Kate for later. Especially since we've already talked about the basics of that. And Verdy isn't so much a problem anymore since I did sort of fix that."
Andrew paused and thought. That really only left the shooting. Yet he really wasn't sure he wanted to share that. However he'd said he would so there wasn't much choice. Especially when the other two were either sort of fixed and already talked about a bit. Andrew looked down at the book he'd been toying with and put it aside before looking back at Kealey.
"Ok so the short of it is that I shot someone."
He'd explain the whole thing after Kealey'd had her initial reaction and demanded explanation. Because really, you didn't just get told that someone you knew had shot someone without demanding reasons and what not. At least he figured that was how it worked.

He didn’t believe her. Kealey shrugged her shoulders at his non-verbal reaction and moved on with things. She’d said her piece and now it was up to Andrew whether or not he took the words to heart. She hoped he did…she really did, but Kealey wasn’t going to push the point. This conversation wasn’t about getting in Andrew’s face and making him change the way he went about things. That was completely counter-productive. This conversation was about letting him get some of these issues off his chest in a productive, healthy way as opposed to turning and running from it all.
He decided that they could talk about Kate later, and Kealey nodded her head. They had already been over the basics of that, twice now really, and it didn’t need to be rehashed in the immediate future. That left the person named Verdy…and something that Andrew was apparently going to be on trial for.
He chose to explain the latter, and Kealey’s eyebrows rose as he explained the reason for the trial. No wonder he’d felt so guilty and was harboring all that pent up frustration. He’d shot someone? Blurting something silly out, or exclaiming in dismay was probably not the way to handle this situation, and Kealey opted for simply curiosity instead, ”Well that’s no doubt something that would weigh heavily on a mind. It sounds like you’ve gone through the proper channels of things if there’s going to be a trial…I’m sure you had a good reason for whatever happened. Do you mind explaining?”

As he figured she would, Kealey asked for an explanation. Andrew sat back in his chair to explain.
"I've been taking boxing lessons from a cop friend of mine. We meet fairly regularly at a gym to practice. I figure since my mutation isn't much good in a fight I'd better learn hand to hand if I want to be of any use in a bad situation. Anyway, we got mugged after leaving the gym one evening and one of the muggers had a gun. '
'We probably should have just went along with it but we didn't. We found an opening and ran. In fact we almost got away. But Jorge got caught by the guy with the gun. He meant to strangle Jorge to death and I wasn't sure I'd get over to him in time. The mugger had dropped his gun during the scuffle with Jorge and Jorge had kicked it away. The gun was closer than the Jorge and the thug were.'
'I picked it up and shot. I never meant to do much more than graze him. Heck, that was the first time I had ever fired a gun. He's dead. I ended up putting a bullet through his head."
And that was one story down and one more person told about it. Andrew switched back and forth between watching the windows and Kealey. He had to wonder just what her reaction would be.

As the story unfolded, Kealey watched Andrew’s emotions very closely. The more he spoke, the more the regret, guilt, and general sadness crept in. He and Jorge…the detective from the hostage situation, had been doing boxing lessons, they’d been mugged, and ultimately Andrew had shot someone.
In the head. Andrew had shot someone in the head. They’d died, and now he was on trial for that.
Kealey took a moment to digest the information before she responded. With both her own surprise and Andrew’s tremendous discomfort with what had happened, the blond refused to reply off the cuff. Instead, she took a deep breath and let it out slowly, nodding her head to show that she’d understood the things she said.
”That is definitely something that would weigh on a person’s mind.” she said slowly and carefully, putting pieces together and trying to figure out how to continue the conversation in a positive way.
”It sounds like it’s a fairly simply case of self-defense.” Kealey said, ”And Jorge is a police officer. I’m sure everything is going to be fine.” Legally…she was sure everything would be fine legally. Emotionally.
”I don’t want to sound like I’m picking your brain…or being pushy…but have you talked to anyone about that? I…I can tell that it’s still affecting you. That’s kind of a….big thing that happened.”

"Jorge, Gemma, Verdy, and Kate. I've told all of them about it. I talked a little bit with Gemma. I've managed well enough."
Andrew gave a shrug after he spoke.
"Killing someone isn't exactly something you can get over now is it?"
He certainly didn't plan on getting used to it. That was for sure. In fact he could hope that he would never be entirely comfortable with what had happened. However there were other things to tell Kealey about. Those were more complicated. Once again, since he'd already talked about Kate, that left only one option for what to talk about next. As far as Andrew was concerned this couldn't be over with soon enough. He liked Kealey and appreciated her being around but talking like this was very uncomfortable.
"So, onto another problem. Unless you'd prefer to discuss this one more."
Andrew didn't see much reason to talk about the shooting anymore. He regretted it but what was done was done. Talking couldn't change it. Andrew waited for Kealey's response. She was being fairly calm. Andrew appreciated that. It couldn't be easy to stay that way.
