The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Andrew gave a shrug. She was just as stubborn as he was wasn't she?
"I'll go first. If you feel like talk afterward then I'll listen."
He took a deep breath. No matter how many times he said it it didn't get easier to say.
"I shot someone. Not just a small injury either. He's dead. He and some other guys tried to mug my friend and I. We fought. He died."
That was the extremely simplified version. It would suffice for his purpose. If she wanted to know more then she could ask some other time. Conveniently enough the timer on the oven chimed at that point. Andrew walked over to the oven and got the cake out. It came out of the pan and slid onto the cake plate easily. Once it had cooled he could frost it and do the lettering.
>>I shot someone. Not just a small injury either. He's dead. He and some other guys tried to mug my friend and I. We fought. He died.
If this had been anyone other than Andrew, Kate's mind would have stopped at 'I shot someone' and never heard the rest. But this was Andrew, a boy she had grown rather fond of over her time in the mansion. He was shy but kind and caring. Kate knew that this was not a malicious act by any means. She could see Andrew fighting to end it and having no choice but to shoot. She pictured him in an ally holding up the gun as men without faces struggled before him. As she watched the scene play out in her head it began to shift and change into a never forgotten memory. Andrew's terrified face was mirrored on the two men that replaced him. Two man that had never had faces.
Kate was brought out of her memories by the ding of the oven timer. She put her hand to her chest and felt her heart racing from the remembered fear.
She didn't speak and watched Andrew pull out the cake and prepare it for cooling.

He'd managed to silence her entirely. Andrew wasn't sure about the quality of the silence. Kate might have become silent because maybe she thought him horrible now. It was entirely possible. Someone had died by his hands. That wasn't an easily forgivable act. If anyone was going to break this silence it wouldn't be him. If Kate had questions then she could ask them.
Then again it might not be that she was horrified at what he'd done. There were any number of reasons that Kate could have become quiet. He wouldn't ask her what she thought of him now. No, he just wouldn't do that. Andrew was in essence a coward. He'd spent the four years since his mutation activation running away. That was what he was good at. Now he was trying to not run so much and it was a lot more difficult than Andrew had figured it would be.
He busied himself with the cake and frosting. Despite the fact that the cake was still cooling and the frosting was done. There was nothing to do but Andrew made himself look busy so that the silence wouldn't seem quite as oppressive. By the time the cake was ready to frost he'd managed to lose himself in little preparations. Andrew grabbed the larger batch of blue frosting and began smoothing the mixture on the outside of the cake.
Kate watched Andrew try and keep busy and wondered if he was just as afraid to speak as she was. Even though she knew in the front of her brain that Andrew would never just kill someone, her mind couldn't help but wonder. Was there really provocation or had this boy that she liked so much let fear capture him like so many had before him. Kate had to know the answer to this or it would haunt her every time they were together from here on out.
"Andrew I need you to look at me. I need to ask you something very important and I need you to look at me when you answer." Kate wanted to see into his eyes as he told the story. She could never let these thoughts rest until she was sure she knew the truth.

The hesitation kicked in when Kate told him to look at her so she could ask him a question. He'd been doing so well at keeping calm up to this point. Now however putting aside his baking tasks to answer a question seemed insane. Andrew reminded himself that he was the one that had started this. He'd brought it up. It was only right she'd have questions. Slowly Andrew put aside the spatula he was working with to look at Kate.
"Yes?"
The sooner he got this over with the sooner he could get back to working on the cake. Kate would ask her questions. Andrew would answer. Then they'd finish up her birthday cake. Maybe he could find some candles in the kitchen and a lighter. With as many kids here as there were he wouldn't be surprised. There was probably at least one or two birthdays a week.
Kate looked into Andrews eyes, "I need you to tell me exactly why you shot him. I wont make you talk about it any more then that, I just need to know why you did it. I know he was mugging you and I am sure he was threatening you, but I need to know that you didn't shoot him because you were afraid and nothing more. Please tell me that there was more." Kate was almost terrified of his answer but spoke with such urgency out of a need to know. What if he did do it out of fear? What if Andrew had been like the men from her dreams? Kate really wasn't sure if she could handle that. She wasn't even sure if she could be around him with that information, let alone be his friend. Fear had taken away her father and locked her inside of Kirby Hall. Fear was one of the few things Kate was actaully afraid of.

She wanted to know why he shot the man. Andrew thought back to that night as he faced Kate. His left hand shook a little as he remembered but he did his best to remain calm while he found a good place to begin.
"They cornered us in an alley. We tried to get away. Had to stop and fight them a couple of times but we got to a spot where we could hide and we did so. Jorge told me to hide in a dumpster and not come out until he said so. Jorge is a cop. I listened to him. When he told me to get out and run I meant to do so. But the guy with the gun had Jorge pinned. Jorge got the gun away from him but the guy started strangling Jorge.'
'I wasn't sure I could get to him in time to do any good with my fists and the gun was right there. I didn't really think about it. It was the closest option I could find. Yeah I was scared. I was scared for myself and I was scared for Jorge. I didn't think about it beyond that."
If Kate was going to condemn him for fear then he might as well walk out of the room now. There had been plenty of fear that night and most of the nights since. He wasn't afraid of the man anymore. He couldn't do anything from the grave. No, now he was afraid of being sent to jail after having avoided it earlier with Sam and the cafe.
"I'm only a person Kate. I can't help it if I become afraid. I'm not a superhero. I'm just a guy whose got bad luck."
Based on his reaction, Kate wasn’t sure if Andrew even knew why she would ask such a question. She should have known that Andrew wouldn’t have just killed the man. It was silly for her to think he would in the first place let alone ask him about it, but fear is irrational. She couldn’t help it if what fear can do to a person scared her as much as it did.
>> I'm only a person Kate. I can't help it if I become afraid. I'm not a superhero. I'm just a guy whose got bad luck.
Kate looked down at her hands again a little ashamed for asking, “You’re right. It was wrong of me to ask, it’s just that my…” Kate stopped as she looked up again and decided to change subjects. Those thoughts were the one thing that she couldn’t share, “You wanted to know why I was upset. Um…well I called my mother today. I haven’t heard from her since we fought about a month and a half ago and well she has never missed a birthday. This was the one day that she made sure was special no matter what was going on. The world could be ending around us and she would have still made sure we watched a sappy love story and had cake. That was the one tradition that was always the same. But when I called and asked for her, Mrs. Davies, our cook, told me that she was too busy to come to the phone. I know that’s silly but it really upset me. It kind of made me feel like no one cared that it was my birthday. Though, comparatively it was rather daft of me to be so upset over it.”

Andrew shook his head.
"No, you have every right to be down about it. After all it is your birthday. You're used to having it be a special day and having your mom be too busy to even bother coming to the phone to chat with you isn't right."
He went back to frosting the cake with a considerably more steady hand. The layer of blue frosting soon covered the entire cake. Andrew picked up the zip top bag and snipped off the corner to begin piping the letters.
"If anything I shouldn't have compared your problem with mine. They aren't even remotely related."
Andrew piped the words 'Happy Birthday Kate' on the top of the cake with the white frosting and it was complete. The only thing left was candles and a lighter. Andrew began shuffling around the drawers and cabinets looking for the items. Eventually he found them.
"So, how many candles for the lovely birthday girl?"
He wasn't entirely sure he'd watch the sappy movie with her but the cake was something he could do and do well. Maybe that was a little bit conceited but Andrew thought he was pretty good at the baking thing.

"It is actually more related then you would think." Kate hadn't even realized she had said the thought out loud. She just sat there watching Andrew spell out the words on the cake and a grateful smile formed on her face. He really didn't have to do this for her. It wasn't even technically her birthday anymore.
>>So, how many candles for the lovely birthday girl?
"Well if you go by my age, 18. Other then that as many as you would like." Kate hoped off the counter and walked over to stand next to Andrew, whipping the last of the tears from her cheeks.

He had to wonder in what round about way his shooting of a person would be related to her birthday issues. Not that he was going to inquire. Kate's statement seemed more like something said off-hand. It was more like she was just speaking her thoughts than actually contributing that to the conversation. Eighteen candles for Kate's cake huh? Andrew did a quick count of the candles he'd uncovered. They had just enough and three left over.
"Eighteen it is."
He put eighteen candles on the cake and was careful not to mess up the writing. If anything he wanted that to survive. A little something to serve as a reminder to those who had forgotten. Andrew almost smirked at the thought. Keyword there being almost. He berated himself for that sort of vindictiveness but it didn't change his plans at all. They would be reminded. Andrew just would have to try not to take any pleasure in the task. That was all. With each candle perfectly placed Andrew reached over to start lighting the candles.
Kate waited eagerly as she watched Andrew put in each candle with care. She had always liked blowing them on as much as she liked blowing them out. She almost giggled when he went to reach for the lighter. If she hadn't been so upset she may have full out laughed at him.
"Andrew there really is no need for that." Kate put her hand on Andrew's arm and moved to stand in front of the cake. She took a deep breath and leaned forward so her face was almost level with the wicks of the candles. Kate let out a delicate blow of air and they lit one by one.
"It's much faster this way." It was interesting how something as silly as blowing on the candles of her cake could make her feel so much better. It had been a small thing but she had done it every year since she had found she could. It was actaully how she had first showed her mother this little quirk of her powers. It was also one of the few things she remembered from her father and from that day.

Something about him attempting to light the candles seemed to cheer her up. Kate made a sound that sounded like a half-hearted giggle. She stopped him with a hand on his arm and took his place in front of the cake. One soft breath from her and the candles began to light. Andrew supposed that was what happened when you were a fire elemental with an insane internal temperature.
"Neat trick."
Kate seemed to feel better now. That was good.
"Happy Birthday Kate...even though that was technically yesterday."
Andrew grinned sort of lopsidedly at her. This wouldn't mean quite as much as if her mother had kept the tradition but it did seem to be helping.
"It's not so hard when you have a being made of fire living in your lungs. Well at least that's where I assume it is." Kate looked into the flames of the cake with fondness. Fire was a part of her, yes, but it also held so many good and bad memories for the young girl. It seemed like she wasn't just made of fire but fire followed her in a way, always there like a warm friend you can call on when needed.
>>Happy Birthday Kate...even though that was technically yesterday.
"Thank you." Kate spoke softly and smiled but it was half-hearted and sad. Even though he had cheered her up a little she just couldn't shake the feelings of the day. So much had changed in her life since she had come to New York City and at this very moment she wasn't quite sure she was happy about it anymore. But when Kate looked up into Andrews lopsided smile something changed. Even though today had been horrible, she wouldn't have given up the past two months for anything. She had done things she had always wanted to, like going to the symphony. She had also done things she would have never dreamed of, like fighting a monster made of raw bread dough. Yes, things had changed, but really they had changed for the better.
Kate looked at Andrew and without saying a word she rose up onto her tippy toes and kissed him.

"I figured as much."
Andrew sort of wished he had something like that. He envied people their useful mutations. Envying and wishing wouldn't change what was. That was something he well knew and so he dismissed the momentary envy. Kate thanked him for the happy birthday wishes and Andrew just nodded. And then she kissed him.
His brain shut down.
After several seconds it managed a reboot.
Kate had kissed him. She was eighteen years old, British, rich, and a noble. And she had kissed him. Andrew hadn't been expecting that at all. He hadn't thought Kate even saw him like that. What about Verdy? They'd settled back into being friends but the possibility was still there. Kate was a good possibility. She was very nice and sweet. Attractive too. However Andrew didn't really want any sort of relationship of that sort at the moment. This qualified as an oh crap moment. Yes indeedy it did.
Andrew needed help. Who on earth did he know that could help him with this? Jorge was out. He'd tease him mercilessly for it. Gemma? No, she was too intimidating to talk to about this. Kealey maybe? At least she'd be able to sense how he was feeling about it rather than have to describe it to her. Oh man he was sooo screwed. Andrew stood there blinking dumbly as he tried to figure out to do or say.
