The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>> "What is it with you and apologies? Again, not your fault…I thought that myself earlier. Who names their restaurant Shady Dragon?"
“Sorry. I get that from my father, “ Jorge said with a nod. “Man used to always tell me that when someone else is discomforted and/or hurt, that you should apologize, even if it isn’t your fault. Too few people apologize anymore.” Jorge shrugged his shoulders. He knew how silly that sounded, but old habits were hard to break. Sometimes it still surprised him how much of their parents influence were still ingrained in him. He was forty for god’s sake! “Yeah, the name is a little weird to me too. Guys at the precinct said it was good though.”
The mood was lightened but it was false. The detective knew this. When it came to things like this, it was always better to resort to small talk than be left alone with your emotions and thoughts. Those tended to be what killed you because your mind always has a way of striking you when you least want it to. And that usually tended to happen around dead air and silence that occurs when one is alone. Jorge did not envy the kid, then again, Jorge would have to live with nearly be killed…again. Another second or two and Jorge was sure he would dead right now. At least he had a second chance.
Then he felt his voice give way and he mentioned Gemma. And of course…Andrew had heard it.
>> "Gemma that works at the mansion, Gemma? The old man have himself a lady?"
Jorge shot a glance at Andrew but he did not right away deny it. That alone would be proof enough that he was dating the woman. So far Jorge had not been to the mansion so he was unsure about how much, if anything, Gemma had told staff or friends at the mansion. He wondered how they would react to the news that their school counselor was dating a police officer?
Finally, after a moment, Jorge realized the kid was smirking and he shook his head. “Wipe the smirk off your face, kid, before I do it myself.” He had to smile inwardly, but he left no evidence of that on the surface of his expression. Instead he simply nodded. “Yes, Gemma does work at the mansion you live at. And yes…we are dating right now.”
Jorge had to admit the conversation did sound just a little awkward. It felt like he was a teenager again, caught trying to hide from his friends that he was dating someone. But what could he really do? He wanted to foster a trust with Andrew and the kid was going to need that for the coming times he was going to have to deal with. And trust is formed through honesty…not lying. It would get out around the mansion anyway.
“Any other questions?” he asked in mock irritation and hid the very, very small smirk that played on the corner of his lips. “What about you? Stolen any hearts yet with that devil may care attitude you’ve been sporting lately?”

Jorge explained the profuse apologies as something he'd gotten from his dad. Andrew sort of smiled. That was a good policy and frankly Andrew had no room to judge. He did it too from time to time. Besides, Lillian's teachings regarding manners the same for him. He held bags, opened doors, pulled out chairs, and anything else he could for a woman. It wasn't that he looked down on them. He was just taught to be polite and that was what polite was to him.
"Heh Lillian, my mother, used to drill manners into my head when I was little. They sort of stuck."
Apparently Shady Dragon had been a tip from the precinct. Figures. Andrew shrugged off any other comments he might have had as he listened first to Jorge's silence about Gemma and then his confirmation that, yes, it was the same Gemma from the mansion. Not only that but, yes, he was dating her. Even though Jorge told him not to smirk Andrew did anyway.
"Haven't met her myself. Word gets around though, it is a school after all."
From what Andrew could tell from the rumors he heard the kids either loved her or hated her. Looking back at high school though, that was what it was like for most kids. Not that he had much room to call some of them kids. He was still young enough to pass for a student in the higher grades. Jorge turned the question back on him and Andrew found himself at a loss for words.
"If I have I don't know about it." he eventually said with a bit of embarrassment in his voice.
Why had he teased Jorge about his relationship? That always led to the question being reversed on the person asking. Jorge asking him if he had a girlfriend was like talking about it with Kevin or one of his high school teachers. That is to say: awkward.

>> "Haven't met her myself. Word gets around though, it is a school after all."
Jorge had to smirk at this, even though he did not look towards Andrew again. Gemma was the type that news would spread about. From everything she has told him so far, she is definitely someone who makes her presence known, especially around kids so it was of little surprise that Andrew had at least heard about it. But Jorge knew that everything she did was with the best of intentions. Sometimes these kids did just need a strong hand to guide them right way. Too few people do that anymore.
“Well, from the snippets she has told me, you guys at the school keep her jumping,” he smirked. “Though I’m sure it’s nothing she can’t handle. She does have The Glare” he joked.
He cared for Gemma a lot. Not simply because of the fact that she is attractive or because she understand mutants, but because of the type of person she is. She would rather throw herself in front of a bus to protect these kids, rather than let something bad happen to them. She was a rare type of person but one that made the world just a little brighter of a place.
>> "If I have I don't know about it."
Then the conversation had switched to Andrew love-life…or lack of. Jorge was a little surprised by this. Andrew was a good kid, but then again he was extremely uptight, or at least he was before the boxing lessons started. He couldn’t blame the kid. With a mutation like his, Jorge was sure it must have been hard for him to get close to people, especially trust them with something has big as the secret to his mutation. Still though, that should not have kept him from living his life.
Jorge had to smirk as he finally replied to Andrew’s low comment about his lack of love.
“Don’t worry Andrew. I’m sure there is someone out there who can tolerate you.” he said with a laugh. A thought struck him to set Andrew up with the receptionist at the precinct, but in the end, Jorge decided he liked the kid too much to do that for him.

Andrew laughed somewhat when Jorge mentioned that the kids kept Gemma busy. Like Jorge said, it wasn't anything she couldn't handle. At least, that's what the stories made it seem like.
"Well I certainly haven't been keeping her busy. I just live and work there."
There were enough people residing at the mansion that you could go a long while without seeing someone unless you were actively looking for them. Not to mention Andrew hadn't know that Gemma and Jorge knew each other, much less were dating. He hadn't even thought about meeting the woman before. Andrew had simply assumed that he'd meet her sometime during the course of their respective jobs. Glancing over at Jorge, Andrew revised that to making an effort to meet the woman that could put up with the detective and his tendency to get into trouble.
Jorge's comment in response to Andrew's about his own lack of a girlfriend changed the atmosphere surrounding that from awkward to friendly annoyance.
"Yeah, just like it took the infamous 'Mama T' to put up with you? That glare is quickly becoming legendary with the students you know."
He let himself smirk somewhat. Joking around like this was much better than dwelling on the earlier portion of the evening. Andrew wasn't looking forward to getting back to the mansion. He would eventually have to go to bed and then he'd be alone in his room with his thoughts.

>> "Yeah, just like it took the infamous 'Mama T' to put up with you? That glare is quickly becoming legendary with the students you know."
“Mama T?” Jorge had not heard about that little nickname from her before. He wondered if she knew about it? Still though, he had to grin at Andrew’s comment. “Don’t’ remind me about the glare. She’s used it on me once. My insides still feel frozen.”
He had to chuckle. After such a traumatic thing, it was good to have a laugh. They both needed it. After all, Jorge had nearly been choked to death and Andrew had killed a man to save his life. Laughing right now may have been awkward at first, but it was sorely needed. The rest of the night would be tough for the both of them so any glimpses of joy they could get now would be for the best and help out in the long run. Lord knows their conscious’ would not let them so easily off the hook.
Then…Jorge felt a deep rumble in his stomach. Was his conscious already trying to eat away at him? Then he noticed that the word “eat” caused yet another rumble. The man was hungry. He sighed as he shot a glance to Andrew and switched the direction in which he was driving. That was the bane of being a cop. No matter what the situation, no matter how grotesque or ethic shattering the incident…cops always found a way to eat through it. And now, especially since they had not had dinner, Jorge needed food.
He noted the curious look on Andrew’s face and shrugged as he drove towards a drive-thru restaurant. The place looked like an old Chinese pagoda and the outside walls had not been washed in years. Yet there was a line of people outside the doors. Jorge had just managed to pull into the drive-thru lane as cars lined up behind him. On the electronic sign and menu in front of them, had a neon lit Panda fighting off a Dragon, with the name “Hidden Panda, Flying Dragon Restaurant” written across it.
“Sorry Andrew, but I don’t know about you, but I can eat.” he said as he looked over the menu. “Besides, I still owe you dinner so, what do you want?” he nodded towards the menu. “This place has the best burgers I’ve seen so far. Strangely enough no Chinese food though. Go figure…”

"Well if that's the case then I'll have to make sure I don't get her mad."
Andrew grinned yet again. The atmosphere was relaxed and for now that was all Andrew could ask for. He hadn't been paying much attention to where Jorge had been driving until the man pulled into one of those drive thru restaurants. The name was somewhat absurd but it would have worked if they'd sold Chinese food. Except they didn't sell Chinese food. They had good burgers though, according to Jorge.
Strangely enough Andrew felt like he could eat. He hadn't felt that way earlier so perhaps all the joking around had helped a little.
"A burger does sound good."
At least if he ate now that was one less thing he'd have to deal with once he got back to the mansion. As much as he wasn't looking forward to being alone Andrew didn't want to have to deal with a lot when he got back. The idea of going through the kitchen and getting something to eat back at the mansion wasn't appealing. Andrew wasn't sure what he'd do to occupy the rest of his evening. He wasn't sure sleep would be an option that he'd want to take. Giving the equivalent of a mental shrug Andrew decided to deal with that later.

>> "A burger and a coke sounds good."
Jorge nodded as he looked over the menu and decided what he was going to get. The person in front of them was still ordering so the detective simply sat back and waited for their turn to come. Though his appetite was back and things felt just a little easier, he was still worried about Andrew. This kid was smiling and joking but that was a front. It would dissipate the second Andrew went home. Sadly there was little Jorge could do about it. The kid would have to learn to handle this. He only hoped he would be able to.
When the car ahead of them finally lurched forward, Jorge drove up and winced at the loud sound of the speaker box squeaking. When the static finally died down a piercing, irritating voice muttered through.
”Welcome to Hidden Panda Flying Dragon! Can I take your order please?”
Once the static died down again, Jorge nodded and replied.
“Uh, yeah. I’ll have two Kung-Pow Beef Bowls, a large side of potato strings, and two medium Mineral waters…” he said as clear as he could.
”Thank you! Please drive up to the next window!”
Jorge nodded as he pulled the car into gear and drove as far up in the line as he could, giving Andrew a glance. The confused look on the kid’s face was expected but still the detective had to smirk. He chuckled as he reached over into his glove compartment, dropped down the hatch and offered Andrew the menu for the restaurant that was written all over in Jorge’s own handwriting in a sharpie pen.
“The owners of this place are a little strange. All their food is coded for Chinese food.” he explained as he unfolded the menu and showed it to Andrew. “I came here for like…a week, trying to get the code right. I thought this really was a Chinese food place.” With a chuckle he sat back, waiting for the car ahead of them to move. “I ran a background check and apparently the grandfather of the current owners did run a Chinese food restaurant. Then, when he passed, his kids wanted to keep the tradition to honor him, but they changed the food.”
It sounded almost perfectly logical. Then as the car ahead of them pulled away, Jorge drove up and handed the woman at the window his credit card to pay for the food. As he waited for his receipt, he turned and saw the expression on Andrew’s face had not changed as he looked over the menu.
“I know, it’s odd. Still good food though!” he grinned.

It was possibly the strangest order he'd ever heard at a place that was supposedly not a Chinese restaurant. For a minute Andrew thought that Jorge had just pulled a trick on him. After a moment or two of looking puzzled Jorge reached over to the glove compartment and handed him a menu. A title at the top proclaimed it to be from the same restaurant they were ordering from. It was scrawled all over in sharpie marker denoting what the names of the dishes actually meant. The following explanation about why it was that way was sort of weird but it was nice that they'd wanted to keep the tradition.
"Weird. Though if the food is good I guess the names don't matter much."
He chuckled. This sort of oddity struck just the right tone. Once the food had been paid for and received Andrew took a couple of bites from the burger. It really was pretty good.
"Huh, that is good."
After that Andrew stayed fairly quiet while he ate. After all that hassle he'd finally gotten his food. Not exactly worth killing someone over but at least he wasn't hungry anymore. While he was having a drink from his coke a question occurred to him.
"Jorge? Will there be a trial? You know, for what happened?"
He wasn't entirely sure whether he wanted to hear yes or no more.

>> "Jorge? Will there be a trial? You know, for what happened?"
It was an inevitable question. The truth was that Jorge did not want to tell Andrew right now, because in all honesty, he simply did not know. Andrew had answered the cop’s questions and Jorge would do his best to keep the incident on the down low, but these things had their way of getting out. To be honest Jorge had a hard time imagining Andrew on the witness stand. Though it was not like the kid had anything to hide about the incident, the questioning could be a grueling process for some. Especially if someone were not ready for these types of inquiries since lawyers could be bulldogs.
Jorge remained silent on the matter as he looked for a place to park and at least enjoy some of the meal. After only a minute or two of searching, he pulled his car along the sidewalk and parked near a library that had an outside display of modern art illuminated by lights and water. He sighed as he pulled out a couple of fries from his bag and ate. Once he swallowed, he turned back to Andrew to finally address his question.
“Someone died, Andrew. There’s always a trial for those.” he said a little matter of factly. He did not want to freak out the kid but he did need to know the truth. “I will do my best to keep it quiet down at the precinct…but you need to prepare yourself because…you will need to defend what happened.”
He sighed as he took a bite from his burger and moved his gaze back to the odd display of art in front of the library. The statue, the red and gray with dangerous looking spikes and holes looked strange, but then again, art was art. But why was he staring at it so intently? Maybe he simply did not want to face Andrew’s expression. The kid had saved his life and he was going to have to stand trial? It did not seem fair…but a man had died. The kid had to defend his actions. Normally Andrew would have been taken in that night…but thanks to Jorge’s influence he managed to get the kid off for now. That influence would not last long though. Andrew would get that call or that knock on the door soon enough.
“You saved my life, Andrew,” Jorge said seriously after another bite of his burger. Damn it really was good. Or he was simply hungry. “And I will stay at your side as much as I can and help you as much as possible.” He paused a moment as he patted Andrew’s arm and smiled a bit encouragingly. “You’re going to be fine, okay? I promise you that.”
The words may have been a bit ironic for Jorge to say but in all truthfulness, he meant them. And his voice and expression showed that.

Jorge was quiet. That wasn't good. The answer wasn't going to one he liked so Jorge probably didn't want to say it. He was proven quiet right in his suspicions when Jorge finally spoke. There would be a trial and he'd have to defend his actions. It didn't really seem all that fair to have to defend a spur of the moment reaction to that sort of situation. It was the law however. Andrew would comply with whatever happened but that didn't meant that he had to like it.
He hadn't meant to kill the man and it wouldn't be easy to get past that. However he didn't regret it. Thinking about what might have happened if he hadn't shot, Andrew didn't regret it at all. Jorge was too nice a person to have lost like that. Not to mention the man would likely have come after him next. The reasoning made perfect sense to Andrew. Whether or not a jury would agree would be a different story. Well, no hair dye for a while and he'd have to dig out some decent courtroom clothes. If he was going to have to face judge and jury then he'd have to look a responsible young man, not a punk.
Andrew looked over to Jorge just in time for the man to say something else. He wasn't expecting Jorge to outright say that he'd be there during the whole process. Andrew had simply assumed he would. The consoling arm pat really didn't have much effect but the state that followed it had Andrew looking out the passenger side window for a minute or so. Andrew gave a slightly audible sniff before turning back to Jorge with a thankful smile.

>> "Thanks."
“Don’t mention it.” he replied. It was said as sincere a way possible because it was sincere. He was not about to get Andrew get dragged through hell for saving his life. The cop owed him at least that much.
The detective watched as the kid turned away and found the outside of the library very interesting. Jorge knew this had to be tough on him. The kid killed someone in defense of a friend and he was going to be put on trial? It did hardly seem fair, but unfortunately that was the law. A life was taken and a jury had to decide whether or not Andrew had the right to use lethal force. Sometimes so many people get sent up the river for bogus crimes like this, but Jorge had to remind himself that he was not a vigilante…he was a cop. It was his job to uphold the law…no matter how unfair it seemed at times.
Matter of fact the law could be so unfair that Jorge would not be surprised if he were asked to bring Andrew in when it came time for the trial to come around. That would be nice. Knocking at the front door of the mansion and hauling Andrew away in cuffs to await his day in front of the courts. No…he would not let it happen like that. There was no need for a public display like that.
Jorge winced as he felt his sore neck once more and he had wonder. What if the kid had not fire that gun? What if instead Andrew tried to jump the guy, knock him off? The detective was not sure, but the one thing he did know was that during that time he was close to passing out. He might’ve just laid there unconscious while the thug tore into Andrew. The kid was good in a fight, but that thug had a fair amount of crazy behind his eyes. He doubted Andrew could have handled him.
Another bite of his burger and Jorge tossed the rest of it back into the bag. He was satisfied for now. At least he wouldn’t go passing out from hunger. He glanced to Andrew, knowing that the kid was appreciative of having him by his side and to break the ice he nudged him.
“Don’t get all teary eyed…not like I asked you to marry me or something.” he smirked as he took another sip of his drink. He would help the kid out of this situation, he promised him he would and Jorge Cervantes always kept his promises.

Jorge razzed him for getting a little emotional and Andrew just grinned at him. If that was how he wanted to play it then Andrew could play that way.
"Oh don't flatter yourself Jorge. Sure you're attractive but you're also a bit old for me and taken too. Not sure I want to get Gemma angry."
Andrew smirked at Jorge and then set about finishing his food. The burger was quickly gone. It was good stuff. He wasn't hungry anymore and that was something. Inevitably his thoughts went back to the shooting. What if he hadn't gone for the gun? Surely he could have held him off long enough for Jorge to come help. But then Jorge might not have been in any shape to help. Not to mention that the mugger might have gotten his hands on the gun again. That wouldn't have been good.
Still, Andrew couldn't help but wonder what would have happened if he hadn't shot that gun. It was pure luck any of the shots hit the man at all. If he'd just aimed a little lower then maybe he wouldn't be heading back to the mansion to wait to be hauled in front of a jury. If they convicted him...well Andrew just didn't want to think about that. Surely they wouldn't do that, once the evidence came in to back him up.
Andrew wondered how he'd tell people about this. Truthfully he didn't want to tell anyone about it. Of all the people he knew here Andrew either liked them too much to risk their disapproval or didn't know them well enough to divulge something like that. With that in mind Andrew decided he wouldn't tell anyone. If they needed to know he'd tell them. Andrew hoped no one needed to know.

>> "Oh don't flatter yourself Jorge. Sure you're attractive but you're also a bit old for me and taken too. Not sure I want to get Gemma angry."
Jorge laughed out loud at the comment. It was a much needed laugh so he reveled in it for a second before he finally calmed down from all the humor. He wouldn’t point out that Andrew had just essentially called him “attractive”, there was no need to heap more on the kid’s plate than what was already going on. He simply grinned and smacked Andrew’s arm once more and drank the last of his soda with glee. Once that was done and with a full stomach, he knew that it was time to renew the drive back.
The detective grew quiet as he pulled back into the street and headed down the back the mansion had learned to know so well. Whenever he had gone to pick up Gemma for a date, he would go to that mansion. So it was easy for him to make his way back, only this time to drop off Andrew. Still, it felt odd. He almost felt like he was dropping off Andrew into the hardest night he would face yet. Then again, maybe he would confide in someone what had happened. He really should not have left it all bottled up. It would be of no good other than to make him bitter and snap at the nearest person who stepped onto his bad side.
Does Andrew even have a bad side? the though made Jorge smirk for a half second but he quickly stopped that. It was evident tonight that Andrew did know how to push back when pushed too far. He only hoped none of that emotional energy would blow up in front of the wrong person. Friends would be his biggest alley right now.
He sighed as he found himself on a familiar road, heading towards a familiar mansion nestled away in the middle of greenery and naturalistic beauty. The drive always put him in awe sometimes.
Another glance to Andrew and he saw the lights of the mansion coming up. Finally, as he drove up to the gate, he spoke.
“Listen, this might be a rough night ahead of you, not that I’m trying to scare you or anything.” He pulled out his wallet and took out another of his small contact cards. He knew he had given one to Andrew already, but this time, he grabbed a pen that rolled around in his dashboard and scribbled on the back of the card and handed it over to him. “That has my cell number. You need to talk, you call me. My phone is always on. Got it?”

Andrew grinned back at Jorge with impunity. He was glad the statement was well receive. Some people just couldn't take a compliment from someone of the same gender. Oddly enough some of those same people couldn't take a compliment from the opposite gender either. Jorge appeared to be neither of those. The rest of the drive was pretty quiet once they got back onto the road. Andrew spent most of the time paying attention to other cars and the scenery around them instead of Jorge.
He did catch a glimpse of Jorge smirking about something but the smirk seemed to abruptly vanish. Since the detective didn't say anything Andrew didn't ask. He just let his mind wander where it would and tried to steer clear of dwelling on what had happened too much. When the high rise buildings started giving way to trees Andrew knew they were getting close to the mansion. He'd just say goodbye to Jorge and head back to his room.
As they pulled up to the gate and stopped Jorge spoke again. Andrew knew full well that as soon as he had nothing else to occupy his mind he'd probably start thinking about it. Someone was dead because of him and he wasn't about to forget that anytime soon. Jorge passing him another one of his cards, this time with his cell phone number scrawled on it. Andrew pulled out his wallet and tucked the card into one of the open spaces.
"Yeah. I'll see ya Jorge."
Andrew tried for a smile but it just didn't take. Instead he unbuckled himself and opened the car door. After he unfolded himself from the car Andrew tried for another smile.
"Try not to get yourself in anymore scrapes tonight Jorge. I won't be around to save you."

Jorge
>> "Try not to get yourself in anymore scrapes tonight Jorge. I won't be around to save you."
There was little else for Jorge to say. He could have retorted, but instead he only had that patented ‘Jorge Smirk’ on his face and simply shook his head. He threw a mock fist shake towards Andrew but that quickly changed into a wave as he watched the kid head back towards his home. Jorge only hung around for second before he finally pulled the car back into drive, turned and headed back the way he came.
The lights of the mansion flickered out the more distance he put between himself and the school. But as he drove away, nagging thoughts started to pervade his head. Already he was being hit that with those thoughts that come with solitude. Those irritated little bee stings in the brain that tell you something went wrong and scraped you to the point that you were not going to catch any sleep. But Jorge was used to it. Being cop meant making a lot of decisions that changed people’s lives, whether for good or bad. And those decisions have ramifications not only on the people involved and their families, but also on officers like him. That was the problem with having a conscious, it never let you rest.
There was one thing he never told Andrew. He hated keeping it from him but he figured it would be best. That first perp that Jorge had to kill in order to save his own life? He still thought about him. Sometimes the thought still crept into his mind that he ended that man’s life. The man was a single father and though he was a monster who brutalized everyone around him, the only person he never touched was his daughter. Jorge took her father away from her. He always told himself that she deserved better that now she had a chance to grow up in a real home. But was that really his judgment to make?
And on top of all that…the man nearly died! He could have been killed by that thug in the street. He felt his life slipping away as that man closed his fingers around his throat and as desperate as he was, as hardened a cop as he was, all he could think about was his family…his friends…and the possible future he could miss out on.
He sighed as he pulled his phone from his pocket and set it inside one of the cup holders as he raised the volume to high. He doubted Andrew would call, the kid would try to be tough the first night. But it was just in case.
“Stay tough kid, first night is the worst,” he muttered to himself as he drove on home.
