There were many things Amber loved about the Mansion, ranging from the large number of interesting mutants to the fact that she didn't feel like a freak when inside that building. One of the things she liked best, however, was the fact that people didn't look twice at the presence of a very tiny dinosaur running around. OK, so maybe not looking twice was a bit of an exaggeration, but no one tried to lynch her or throw rotten fruit at her if she decieded to do so, both of which were experiences she had had in the past.
On this particular afternoon, once all her classes were finished, Amber decided that it would be a wonderful plan to lurk the Mansion as a Compsognathus. She had spent a good deal of time hunting in that form recently, mostly small rodents and bugs, but not nearly as much time working on her stealth. There was just something satisfying about being able to listen in on the conversations of others when they didn't realize any prying ears were close by. Oh, she didn't intend to share any of that information, of course not she was no gossip, but it was satisfying to know that it could be gathered with no one the wiser. Maybe she couldn't turn invisible, not like Fade who she had met recently, but one had to make due with what one had and she had a lot to work with.
Amber wasn't quite certain where to start her stealthy plot. Was it better to go somewhere in which there was very few people in which case less curious eyes or better to go to a place that was likely to have many people, in which case perhaps everyone would be so distracted by everything else going on around them that they wouldn't notice a chiken sized dino scurrying across the ground. In the end she decided on the living room and she would simply go with whatever she found there. Oh, this was going to be fun.
Walking was such a drag. He did it all the time and so did every one else around this place. No matter how cool the mansion it still turned out to be just another school. On the plus side there were so many different people around the school that it was unlikely that you'd ever run into someone that was boring or had a boring power. In fact he had yet to meet people that were boring.
But back to the whole walking thing. Been there done that. The coolest part about being a mutant was his own powers. Since he liked his powers so much he thought that it'd be fun just to wander around the mansion as a stuffed animal. Only this time he'd be sure to not wander into anyone's room. Especially if they're upset. It didn't turn out well last time; but as long as he stayed away from people's rooms then he should be fine.
There was a particular form that he'd hadn't used very much. It was one that he used quite a bit when he first got it but after that he didn't really use it that much anymore. However, this seemed like a good day to play with it some more. His triceratops form was one that he was pretty sure couldn't be mistaken for someone's personal stuffed animal. First came the horns. Then the back of his head jutted out to make the protection of the animal. Teddy then shrunk down to less than 2 feet tall and sprouted a tail. Of course his feet and hands then turned to the feet of a triceratops and he feel onto all fours. His eyes moved away from their normal position on his head and took up sports on his quickly unhuman like head. Once everything was complete Teddy started walk around the as a triceratops.
The first room he came to was the living room. He didn't immediately see a bunch of people sitting in there, like he would have expected since there were no classes going on, but that didn't matter. It was still fun to walk around like he was in a giants world. Since he was so small everything seemed like he was walking through a jungle practically. Even the carpet fibers seemed like grass. The chair legs and tables seemed like huge tree trunks. As he looked around he didn't notice the big chicken sized thing in front of him. Without realizing it he walked right into a dinosaur that looked like a zombie.
When Amber first skittered into the living room, she was a little disappointed to see that there was no one else there. How was she supposed to practice spying when there was no one to spy on? However, her opinion of the matter quickly changed when she realized that she could take advantage of the empty room. There was, after all, more to spying than simply being small enough to be not easily noticed. Proper spying involved finding a hiding place so that even if people did think to look down, they wouldn't immediately see her. The question was, where to hide.
There were a surprising number of nooks and crannies that someone as small as Amber currently was could climb into. Hiding under furniture was the first thing that came to mind, but she thought that might be a little bit too obvious. Looking around at everything towering above her, she noticed a rather lovely little nook nestled between behind a chair that was arranged so that both sides rested against a wall right at the corner of the room. There wasn't much space back there, but a creature the size of a chicken didn't need a lot of room.
Amber was so intent upon searching out her hiding place that she wasn't exactly paying attention to much else and, completely unexpected, something soft and squishy suddenly ran into her. She let out a little squak as she struggled not to fall to the ground, barely managing to keep her feet. Once steady again, she looked to see what in the world might have collided with her. What she saw was about the last thing in the world she expected to see. There was, standing before her, a grey stuffed triceritops, of a size similar to her own. She chirped inquisatively at it. The sight was far too bizarre to be frightening and all her thoughts of spying went immediately out of her head when confronted with the stuffed and animated dinosaur.
He didn't think he'd run into this creature that hard. But apparently it was hard enough to almost knock it over. Ted had seen pictures of what this thing was. It looked like a Compi. But it didn't look quite like he'd seen in the Jurassic Park movies. It's color was dull and didn't quite look like it was someone that could bring dinosaurs back to life. It looked more like someone had covered a fossil in skin and painted it.
Ted wasn't quite sure what he should do. Should he run? Possibly. Would whatever or whoever this is hurt him? Possibly. What had he done wrong this time? Nothing, so that always lowered the risk of being attacked. Squawking at people wasn't very nice; however there was really nothing he could do to respond. So all he did was raise his head up and down. He wasn't that much smaller than her but he still figured that this creature could hurt him if it wanted to do.
Teddy took one stuffed triceratops step closer to her. The fact that he wasn't being chased right now was a good thing. No matter how well he was able to mimic an creature mimicking a dinosaur was completely up to interpretation. However, there was no way that he could ever pass for a real dinosaur. Ted hoped with all his stuffing that this didn't turn into a fight. He wasn't exactly dangerous. After all he was squishy and made of stuffing. He was made for cuddling not fighting.
In this form he wasn't exactly ready to use this creature for more than just walking around. He'd only used this a few times before and he didn't reckon that he'd be able to do much more than walk. Ways of showing that he didn't mean any harm to this creature weren't really coming to mind. So he decided to try something that he'd seen other animals doing. He wagged his tail. Maybe it wasn't exactly a dinosaur thing to do but he hoped that it looked friendly enough.
The little stuffed dinosaur was quite unlike any dinosaur that Amber had ever seen before and that covered a lot of ground. Well, ok to be fair she hadn't actually seen any real living dinosaurs unless she counted herself, but she had seen many pictures of dinosaurs and none of them were stuffed. She knew enough about triceratops to know that they were much larger than the little gray critter standing before her and certainly real triceratops were not made out of fur and stuffing. Of all the possible mutations she ever expected to encounter, the ability to turn into a stuffed dinosaur was pretty near the bottom of her list.
The little stuffed dinosaur seemed a little skittish which, Amber supposed, wasn't surprising given that it was made of stuffing. Or at least, that's what she assumed it was made of. She tried her best to look as meek and intimidating as possible, which is something she never expected to have to do in her Compsognathus form. Although she was in possession of a rather handy set of claws and a mouthful of razor sharp teeth, humans just didn't tend to find anything the size of a chicken to be all that intimidating and she really couldn't blame them, honestly.
Amber's attempt to look non-frightening apparently worked as, a moment later, the dinosaur began wagging its tail. She wasn't sure if it was capable of speech or even sound, but given that Amber herself wasn't capable of speech either she figured that didn't really mattered. She chirped a second time at it and wagged her own tail, trying to show that she wanted to be friends. Claws or no claws, there didn't seem much point in trying to attack the creature who she had to assume was probably one of the students at the Mansion. Its not like it meant to almost knock her over. At least she didn't think it had.
Ahh wagging tails. You can't get a more non-intimidating thing than that now can you. Ted was actually glad that this other person didn't take almost falling over too seriously. Especially since it was an accident. The big question that went through his head now was, Now what?
They'd established the fact that neither was dangerous, or at least that neither was going to tear the stuffing out of the other. So now it seemed that there was only one thing to do. Play with the new, more realistic, dinosaur. It didn't seem like this creature could speak either; however it could make chirping noises, which was more than Ted could do, so they'd be playing a mix of charades and noises.
It was just a good thing that Teddy happened to be the master of charades. Seeing as how this Compi had arms and could make noise it would make things easier than a four legged triceratops trying to signal play time or something. Since there still wasn't anyone in the living room, which still seemed odd, he figured that they might as well check out some other place.
Or they could just mess around in the living room. Because let's face it... how much damage could a dinosaur the size of a chicken and a stuffed animal cause?
So, Amber and the stuffed dinosaur had established friendly intentions. That was good, very good in fact. Now that she thought of it, just because the creature appeared to be fuzzy and harmless, didn't necessarily mean that it was. After all, it was always possible that it could also breathe fire or something equally scary like that. However, even if it could breathe fire, friendly intentions meant that it wasn't too likely to breathe fire on her.
With a curious chirp, Amber hopped behind the little creature, trying to get a good view from all angles. It wasn't her fault that she had never seen an animated stuffed dinosaur before, was it? Besides, she had a particular attachment to Mesozoic creatures, for obvious reasons, and this just happened to be among the most fascinating prehistoric monsters she had ever come across. So very different from her own alternate forms, and yet similar all at the same time. Oh, if only she could ask it questions. Maybe when they both returned to their human forms (assuming it had a human form) then she would.
Curiosity finally quenched, Amber wondered what they should do now. Communication was clearly a bit of a problem. She had used her blackberry to text while transformed in the past, but she wasn't sure the stuffed triceratops would even be capable of that much. So far it hadn't uttered so much as a sound, so she had to assume that it was mute. Maybe it wanted to get in on the game of spying on students? Just of practice, of course, no malicious intents at all. She wasn't that kind of person, she just wanted to see if she could do it. Honest. The question was, how to get across that idea with her current lack of words.
Well this was certainly something he hadn't come across before. Now that both seemed to agree that neither was malicious to the other, they needed a way to talk to each other. Teddy himself knew that he couldn't talk and after a bit of staring at this other creature he guessed that it couldn't do much more than chirp at him.
Ted thought for a minute. Then it hit him... They're in a school there has got to be something lying on the ground that they can write with. Like a pen or a marker. Or heck chalk would probably work well enough, but seriously how many schools still used chalk in their classrooms.
Once again Ted was struck with a dilemma. He doesn't know sign language. Also what was the universal sign for 'follow me'? Well he didn't know so he just started walking and hoped that this creature would get the idea and follow him. Maybe it had other plans but unless it told him he had no way of knowing and was going to stick with the plan of finding an open classroom and using it's markers. He could only hope it followed him.
(ooc: go ahead and take them o the class if you want)
In the past Amber had had to deal with communication problems with others, but in all those other instances it had only been her that hadn't been able to communicate. One could get across quite a bit when at least one of the parties was able to say something. When both parties were effectively mute, however, that presented a whole new degree of problems.
Amber was deep in thought, trying to figure out what to do about this particular problem, when she realized that the stuffed dinosaur had begun to walk away from her. She skittered to catch up to it, not wanting to be left alone. Communication problems or not, there was just too much potential fun to be had to give up now. How often, after all, was she ever going to have the chance to play with another dinosaur, stuffed or not?
It was only when the stuffed animal led Amber into a classroom that she realized what his thoughts must be. Classrooms had chalk boards and white boards and markers and chalk. Surely they could both read and although it might be a bit of a challenge, they might just be able to write too! She bobbed her head and chirped her approval at this most brilliant of plans. Now all they had to do was find some suitable writing implements and they'd be set.
The first thing Amber did was hop up onto a chair and then from the chair onto a desk. Being little larger than a cat had its disadvantages, mainly the fact that it was difficult to see things that were so far above her. On top of the desk, however, she had a rather good view of the entire classroom including, as luck would have it, her goal of a white board and a marker on the opposite side of the room on the teacher's desk. Another excited chirp followed to get her companion's attention and an excited pointing in that direction. The trick would be how to get the board off of the desk since, unfortunately, it looked like someone had moved the chair away from the desk and she was pretty sure she wasn't able to jump that high off the ground without it.
Thankfully it picked up on his idea and took the lead. Maybe this would be a good opportunity to work on what people are tying to say rather than what they are saying. Mostly because the other dinosaur wasn't saying anything and even though he wasn't the master of charades he could figure out that it was pointing at markers or something over by the teachers desk.
Unfortunately, he wasn't able to jump up there even if there was a chair close enough to help him up. He'd need more like a step ladder or something. Maybe if he was a bit taller then he'd be able to get up there. But let's face it... How often do you ever see or hear about a triceratops jumping. Exactly... Never. But even still Teddy walked over to the chair and started to push it. He didn't weigh much but the chair was on wheels and it didn't take much to make it roll. As it started to roll Ted stood up on his hind legs and fell forward against it. The chair rolled to the desk and made a loud thunking noise as it came to a stop. Hopefully this would help the other Dino get up to the desk and they could start 'talking' to each other.
As the stuffed dinosaur pushed the chair closer to the desk, Amber decided all at once that she liked him, whoever he was. He was a smart one, thinking on his feet, and that was always something to appreciate. Even if his power was a little on the unusual side, that was no reason to disparage it. After all, no one got to choose their powers and besides, she could see all sorts of uses for a stuffed animal shifter, not the least of which was spying on little girls. Not that she was quite certain why one would want to spy on little girls, but the option was there nonetheless.
Once the chair had been moved to the appropriate location, Amber nodded her head at the stuffed triceratops and stood back, gauging the distance between herself and the chair. Once everything had been calculated in her head she took a deep breath and began running, leaping up just as she reached the chair. She almost didn't make it and her little claws dug into the fabric, frantically pulling herself up and onto the chair. Finally on her feet again and panting heavily, she looked back down at her companion and flashed him (or her) a toothy grin before hopping up onto the desk.
Once on top of the desk it was a simple matter of first pushing the markers onto the ground and then pushing the white board onto the ground. Of course she was careful not to crush her new stuffed friend with the white board because something told her that would not be the best way to make friends. Once the supplies were somewhere they could actually be used she hopped back onto the chair (a feat much easier than it had been the first time) and then back onto the ground.
Well he was right. The supplies they need were on the teacher’s desk. After he moved the chair he waited until his new friend climbed up onto the desk. If only he could jump up there, then they wouldn’t have to make a mess in the classroom. But he couldn’t so he was stuck on the floor while his new dino buddy jumped onto the desk and retrieved the markers and whiteboard. Both fell to the floor with a clatter. It’s a good thing Teddy was smart or at least had common sense; otherwise he might not have thought to hide as the sky rained school supplies. He took cover under the chair that he’d just pushed to the desk and waited for the things to hit the ground. When the rain of school supplies had ended eh came out from under the chair and walked over to where they all now laid.
Teddy pushed a couple of markers closer to the whiteboard so that they could both use one and the rest he left where they landed. Now that he was here he started to wonder how he was going to do this, it wasn’t like he had thumbs, or he even had a jaw bone to clamp down on the top with so that eh could open the marker. So far this plan didn’t seem to be working as well as he thought it might. On the bright side, however, this introduction was going way better than the first time he met someone as a stuffed animal. Ted waited for his new friend to get down from the teachers desk, so that maybe he could get some help with opening his marker. Finally his friend made his (or her) way back to the ground and Teddy pushed the other marker over to it with his front horn so that they could start their introductions properly.
Amber hadn't thought to warn the stuffed dinosaur that she was about to rain school supplies down on where his head had previously been, but luckily he had the presence of mind to duck under a desk. Everything went clattering to the floor rather loudly and she paused a moment, listening to see if she had gotten any unwanted attention. Not that either of them were really doing anything wrong, but it just paid to be sure. Not hearing anyone, she jumped down from the desk back onto the chair and from the chair back onto the floor.
Once back on the floor it was a matter of figuring out the best way to use the markers she had just found. The white board, luckily, landed right side up so that, at least, wasn't a problem. Looking at the stuffed dinosaur beside her, Amber realized that it might have some problems removing the lids from the markers which meant it was up to her to do so.
Opening up markers wasn't as easy as it would have been were Amber human, but she was resourceful and had the advantage of having hands. Well, sort of having hands anyway. Positioning a marker between her front claws, she bit down on the cap and pulled, revealing the writing end of the marker underneath. Putting the first marker on the ground, she did the same with a second marker.
When all the markers and white board landed on the floor he was surprised that there was no one around to hear it. Then again if someone was around then they probably wouldn’t have been in the classroom because they wouldn’t have been in class. Teddy felt a little helpless. He couldn’t jump, talk, or open markers by himself. Hopefully he could write, even if it would be very clumsy using his mouth. If he thought it was hard to write without prehensile thumbs then it would be way harder without even having hands.
The young mutant was glad that his new friend could take the caps off the markers; otherwise they would have been in some serious trouble. With the markers now uncapped the triceratops proceeded to pick up the marker with his mouth and write in very bad handwriting. It was a good thing they taught cursive at a young age because it would probably have been very hard for him to print everything. Ted figured that they could skip with the pleasantries because they had actually been spending time with each other and they’d already established the whole ‘Hi let’s be friends and not eat each other’ thing. So instead of writing hi he wrote, ‘I’m ted.’ Teddy set down the marker, since it was actually hard to hold in his mouth and waited for his Compi friend to write.
Amber chirped her success as she returned to the solid ground below her. The stuffed triceratops, however, appeared to be having a few more difficulties than she was having. It made sense, she supposed, given that he was a stuffed animal and didn't really have opposible digits. At least was in a dexterous sort of form, complete with hands that were almost as good as human hands minus a couple of fingers and a thumb. Well, perhaps not quite that good given just how much of a disadvantage not having a thumb was, but they were sufficient for things like writing or typing.
Amber watched carefully as the stuffed creature took the marker in his mouth and wrote out his name. She nodded her long neck before taking a marker of her own. The greatest difficulty in using said marker was its size, held up it was almost half her height and she had to take it carefully in both hands in order to use it. She wrote out the name Amber, complete with a little arrow pointing in her direction and a little smiley face at the end. If it wasn't up to her usual tiny neat writing, at least it was readable.
