“NO! NO! YOU PROMISED ME NO ONE WOULD GET HURT IF I JUST DID WHAT YOU SAID!”
The girl crumbled to the ground, defeated and utterly destroyed. She had tried so hard to keep him happy and to keep everyone safe from him, but all of that had just blown up around her because her stupid father didn’t know when to call it quits…
Her psychic screech froze everyone around her, so she thought no one heard as her tears dripped pitifully onto the floor. “You promised me…” Her sobs echoed in the silent restaurant.
Micah poked his head out from under the table. “Um, okay. So… if Cervantes asks, I kept my head under the table the entire time, okay? Cause, no offense, your power is frightening and all, but that Detective is going to have my, um, forgive my use of the vernacular, but he’ll have my balls if he finds out I didn’t stay put like he told me to.”
The girl jumped up, and backed into a wall, cowering as if she thought Micah was going to hit her. “Why didn’t my power affect you!?”
“Whoa, calm down upset girl! I’m just a mutant, just like you.”
Her face was puffed red and wet, and judging by the bags under her eyes she hadn’t slept for a month. If Micah had had any doubts about whether or not she was dangerous, they were gone now. This girl was clearly a victim.
Micah looked around the restaurant. What is there I can use to make her stop crying? “Here…” he ran behind the counter, being careful to dodge the brain-frozen waitress and grabbed a bowl and a scoop, “have some ice cream.”
He handed her two scoops of his favorite flavor. “You feel better?”
She grimaced as she tried a spoonful. “No, this cr-cr-crap is horrible.”
Micah laughed. “It’s an acquired taste I guess. My name is Micah.”
“Al-Alice.”
“Hi Alice.” Micah looked around the restaurant, patrons frozen, and turned back to the man and Cervantes, guns still pointed at each other. “So who’s Mr. Charming over there with the gun?”
“M-my father.”
“Um, I have bad news. Your father’s a bit of a prick.”
“You h-have no idea.”
“I have to admit though, it was a pretty good plan. He’d send you in, you’d do your thing, then he’d follow and rob everyone. But, you had to have known you were going to fail eventually. I mean, you were smart to only target smaller, independent places, since it was less likely that there’d be cameras, but eventually you had to realize that something would go wrong and you’d get caught.”
“Yeah, I knew that. My dad though…” she cast a scared glance at the frozen man, “he h-has a gambling problem. Once he found out what I could do, he hatched this plan to pay off some loan sharks downtown. But even after we had plenty of money, he just wouldn’t stop…” She wiped her eyes with a sleeve. “He said he’d k-kill me if I tried to run”
She looked at Micah directly for the first time. “So what happens to me now?”
“Well, the Detective arrests your father. He goes to jail. You go on with your life. How does that sound?” Micah smiled.
“But I’m a m-mutant. Who used my powers to rob h-humans. Won’t I go to jail too?”
“I don’t know Alice. But my guess, if that hard-nose over there has any say in it, you’ll be fine.”
She sunk to the ground and put her head in her lap. “I don’t even care anymore. I just want this to be over.”
Micah sighed. I can’t guarantee the girl’s safety once the police have her, but in her current state, she wouldn’t last long on the run either. She’d just end up being the tool of the next criminal who got hold of her.
“Um, Micah?”
“Yeah?”
“My power’s going to wear off soon. You might want to do something about those two.”
Micah looked back at Cervantes and her father. “Oh yeah, I knew I forgot something.” Micah walked over and pried the gun from the man’s hands. “You won’t be needing that. And now something about the hands…” Micah undid his belt and tied up the man’s hands. Crap, I like this belt. I hope Cervantes makes sure I get it back…
He looked at Cervantes’s gun. Nah, I’ll let him keep his. I mean, he probably won’t need it, seeing as I just saved the day and everything, but something tells me messing with a cop’s gun isn’t a good idea.
Pleased with his work, Micah went over to the corner and offered the girl his hand. “Come on Alice, let’s go to that table over there and watch this all work out. It should be quite the show.” She hesitated at first, but then she accepted his hand. Once they were seated, Micah dug into her uneaten bowl of celery ice cream. I mean, there was no reason to let it go to waste, right?

As if nothing had happened, all the patrons in the restaurant had returned to what they had been doing prior to being frozen by little Alice’s abilities. Some people continued as they were in mid-bite, others had continued to turn their heads to the ruckus that had happened at the entrance, while others continued to scream that they saw two men with guns. Jorge himself continued as if nothing had happened as well, his gun held up at the man, only now, he stared at the same man who once threated him with a gun, now without one and with his hands.
It took a second of confusion before Jorge finally realized what he was doing and returned his gun to its holster. As the man struggled to free his hands and started to make his way to the door, Jorge surged forward and grabbed the man by the shoulder.
“Oh no you don’t!” He said as he spun the man around and pushed him up against a wall. He freed his hands from the belt for a split second before he replaced the bonds with shiny metal handcuffs instead and read him his rights, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney. If you…”
As he continued to speak, Jorge tried to make sense out of what happened in the back of his head. He still could not comprehend how, in the matter of a second, the man’s gun disappeared and his hands were bound up. As he mulled this over, Jorge glanced out to the side and noticed that Micah had turned to watch and across from him, sat the little red-haired teenager with both a mixture of sadness, fear and relief on her face. Jorge knew that Micah must have done something. He said his marble brain protected him from the girl’s abilities, but what they were, Jorge still had not been able to figure out. If, as Micah had stated earlier, that people were frozen in place around her, that could explain why things seemed to have changed so suddenly.
It would also mean that Micah did not do as he was told and stay hidden. Jorge locked eyes with Micah and glowered at him for a brief second before he pulled the arrested man outside. The sounds of sirens filled the reddening sky as the day started to end. The panicked waitresses had called 9-1-1 which is what Jorge had hoped for. As several police cars pulled into the parking lot, Jorge held up his badge and led the father to the nearest cop. As soon as the man was placed into the squad car, Jorge turned and once more looked at the restaurant. Through the window he could see both Micah and the little girl. Both watched him with intense curiosity and what looked almost like fear. Jorge knew this was going to be tough. The child committed several criminal acts but it was against her will.
Jorge wagged his finger for the pair of them to come out and join him. He would reassure them both and the girl would be fine.
“Are you sure you don’t-gulp-want any?” Micah said as he shoveled more delicious ice cream into his mouth.
“No, I’m… good, thanks.” Alice still looked a little tense and afraid, even though her father was handcuffed and in police custody.
Micah tried to lighten the mood. “You know, you could be an X-Woman one day.”
“I don’t think they let criminals into the X-men.”
Micah laughed. “Pfft. You robbed a few diners. Big deal. No offense, but you kind of cheated anyway. Freezing everyone’s brain and then just taking stuff while they’re brain-dead? Please, that’s not real robbery. Where’s the challenge? Where’s the zing? You didn’t even do it yourself. You had your daddy help you.”
Alice wasn’t impressed with his attempt at a joke.
“Besides, I already have a cool codename for you.”
“What?”
Micah smiled “BRAINFREEZEYou Thought Ice Cream Was Bad? You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet.”
Micah burst in laughter, and for the first time in weeks, Alice joined him.
The blonde waitress bounded over to him. “Oh Micah, it’s so terrible, there are police everywhere, and the customers are scared out of their minds. Thank God you were here with that burly Detective. I still have no idea why that man just ran in here with a gun! He must be crazy!”
Micah nodded. “Yes, it does seem rather bizarre and totally unconnected to anyone else in the restaurant, doesn’t it?”
The waitress fanned herself with a menu. “And that Detective… oh! Seeing him savagely wrestle that madman to the ground, oh Micah, it did things to me, made me feel things I haven’t felt in years.” She slipped Micah a piece of paper. “Do me a favor, sugar. Give this to him. Tell him he can call anytime.”
Micah laughed. “Will do.”
Following Alice’s gaze, Micah turned and looked out the restaurant at the rows of blaring police lights, and suddenly his confidence melted a little. Am I really doing the right thing, letting Alice just turn herself in?
Detective Cervantes saw the two looking out, and gestured for them to join him.
“Come on Alice. Detective Cervantes wants us.” Micah slid out of the booth and stepped into the warm summer night.
I hope he can protect her. I got her this far. It’s his turn now.

Jorge
Jorge watched as both Micah and the red-haired came out of the restaurant and slowly made their way towards him. He could not comprehend of the tough life this child must have had with this man as her father, especially if he managed to convince her for so long to use her powers to help him rob diners instead of using the power on him. Then again, Jorge understood the draw of loyalty to family. After all, a quick background check had revealed that her father was once a successful pickpocket, and unfortunately, the only immediate member of her family still alive. Of course she would do whatever he said, he was her father. Children tend to believe in their parents, even when they have outright lied to them.
As the night began to set, the flash of the police lights illuminated the parking lot in shades of red and blue as officers were just getting to leave. When Micah and the red-haired teen arrived, Jorge gave her a small smile as he knelt down in front of her. The stubble on his face looked worse than ever, which made him look just plain tired and grizzly. But it was the softness in his eyes that tended to help most victims feel secure when he was around. After all, having seen as much as he has, Jorge still had the kindest eyes.
“Your name is Alice, correct?” He asked.
“Yes sir,” Alice whispered as she started to raise her hands to be handcuffed.
Jorge only smirked as he gently took her hands and lowered them back down to her sides. He turned to the side and waved for one of the officers to come over, another man how looked as kindly as Jorge’s eyes were.
“Listen, this nice officer is going to take you to the station to get your statement, okay?” He whispered with a small wink. “You need to tell him exactly what you told me in the restaurant. About how your father dragged you along to use you to distract the nice people in this restaurant, so he could sneak in and rob them at gun point.”
There was a silent exchange between Alice and Jorge as they looked directly into each other’s eyes. Jorge could not put her through mutant crime related questionings and risk her being thrown into any kind of mutant security facility. Even though she had been forced, he knew that opponents of mutant rights would love to make an example of anyone, especially a young child, of the dangers of mutant abilities. No, he could not risk her being assigned to a fate like that.
Alice opened her mouth to say something but Jorge had shaken his head to tell her it was okay. After a few moments, he watched the tears well up in her eyes and he stood and smiled at the officer who had come over.
“Officer Jenkins, will you please escort this young lady to your car? Make sure she gets whatever she wants from the vending machine. It’s on my tab.”
Jorge watched as the two walked away and overheard Alice explain that her abusive father had a gambling debt and that he was going to rob this restaurant in order to pay off his bookies. He smirked slightly as he looked in the other squad car and watched the angry father as he banged his forehead against the mesh divider. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Micah come over, a look of surprise and disbelief on his face.
“Yea,” Jorge whispered as he turned to face him. “I know I lied. But it’s just better for her this way. She doesn’t need to go through anymore trauma for her father’s mistakes. Besides, I’ve heard these X-Men specialize in lost and wayward children. Maybe she’ll find her way towards them.” He sighed turned to head back to his car, he could heard Micah following on his heels. “As for the robberies, well…I guess those will just have to be unsolved.”
As he arrived at his car, Jorge unlocked and opened his door. He then turned to face Micah and actually gave him a warm smile.
“Listen kid, you were a lot of a help today. Thank you for that.” He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a contact card and handed it over to him. “You ever need help, you can contact me on the number listed there. Come on, I’ll give you a ride home if you want.”
So the cop had done right by the girl after all… good for him.
Micah smiled and looked at the card. His first name is Jorge. I was wondering about that. Even though he had recorded the name and number onto his mind, he kept the card. I don’t want to give him the wrong impression but giving it back to him, and besides, it’ll be a nice memento.
“Thanks, Detective. In case you, um, didn’t notice, I’m kind of new to this ‘being a hero’ thing. I’m glad I had a chance to study off a pro. And thanks for the offer, but I’ll just take the subway if that’s okay. I could use some fresh air.” Besides, I’ve only been at the Mansion for a few days. I don’t know how the staff would feel about me being brought home by the NYPD.
Before he left, Micah lowered his voice to a whisper. “Wow, if you don’t mind me saying so, that was a genius plan Detective. Her father gets what he deserves, and she is treated like the victim she was instead of a violent mutant criminal. Besides, it isn’t that much of a lie. He was using her to distract the patrons, in a sense.” Micah leaned close to Jorge’s ear. “Just don’t forget about the one other person who knows our little secret; the father. I wouldn’t put it past him to use anti-mutant sentiment to his favor and try to pin this on his gene-freak daughter. Get him in private, cut him a deal. He only goes down for one robbery instead of dozens. “
“Oh, and before I forget…” Micah reached into his pocket and handed the Detective a slip of paper. “The blonde waitress wanted me to give this to you. I think she likes you and those man muscles you used to take down that guy." Micah pulled out another, smaller slip of paper. “And here’s my number too. Not for a date, I mean, not that you aren’t attractive for an older man, but, um, but in case you ever need to a mutant with a mind made of marbles.”
Micah waved as he walked away from the restaurant. “See you around Detective!”
Later, on the subway, Micah laid back and smiled warmly as he remembered the look of relief on that girl’s face when she realized that her nightmare was finally over. You know, I could get used to this hero thing.
