The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Chewing her lip, dressed in a pair of new jeans, a white t-shirt, covered by a green jacket that had been patched too many times, her crappy boots complete with new laces, and her cameo around her neck, Maddy stood nervously in the hallway around the corner from the class. She had only been at the mansion for a little while, but she had been informed that she had enough time to settle in and it was time to start school. She was quite a bit behind, thanks to the language barrier and her missed time in Romania, so she was worried the younger kids might make fun of her or think she was stupid or something.
The mansion had been kind enough to provide her with new clothes so her jeans, shirt, and backpack with school supplies were new. But she still felt like the other kids would be able to tell that she had been homeless. Maddy was still a teenager that cared what others thought of her, despite her other quirks that sometimes made her seem older. Taking a deep breath, holding the note she had been told to give the teacher, her backpack over her shoulder, she tried to be casual when she walked around the corner.
Taking in the scene with a glance, then ignoring it, she walked past the other kids that were milling outside the room trying to postpone class, she pulled open the door and looked for the teacher. Swallowing, suddenly feeling embarrassed for no real reason, she realized the teacher wasn't there yet. Trying not to attract attention Madlaina slid into an empty desk in the front row. Looking around the room under her lashes, her nervously flicked her fingers, making sure her pack was tucked safely between her feet.
A struggle here and a kick there, all were signs of trouble for him if he didn’t do what he was told, apparently the mansion had a set limit on sick days a student could take when he wasn’t actually sick. How was Carrick supposed to know? It’s not like he memorized the school rules and what high expectations they had of their students. It would have been easier on their part to set lower standards that way he would have never disappointed whoever was running the show.
Reluctantly he walked into the room after a threat that they would call his father if he decided to not show for class again. The last thing he wanted was his dad coming to the mansion just to tear it apart to get him. What’s more annoying he could never successfully run from his father for long. Even though he tried his dad somehow always managed to get a hold of him. It might have been to the fact that he would always drop the, ‘Don’t make me tell your mother’ or it might have been the fact that his father could pin him to the ground with a mere thought. It was he felt one of the only disadvantages to having your Da be one of the most powerful telekinetic in all of Ireland.
Eric O’Connor the bane to the Gryphon shifting boy and all he stood for. His father never had a proper education and he ended up just fine. Even managed to bag someone as smart as his mother. Shifting the shoulder strap of his backpack Carrick loosened the straps as much as possible. Clothes were one thing but if he had to keep the backpack on any longer than he had o he knew he would do something he would regret. It was uncomfortable on the base of his wings, it didn’t hurt it was just he wasn’t used to actually coming prepared to his classes, then again he couldn’t actually ever come prepared seeing as he never really did show to class.
Walking into the classroom he spotted a few familiar faces and a few new ones, the teacher’s face was in his opinion the most entertaining face of them all. She walked in a few seconds after him. Her jaw hung open slightly ajar as she looked at her watch and then the clock above her head then back to Carrick, “O’Connor?” the woman asked in surprise as the winged boy walked towards the windows to get a better look at the sunny day he was missing.
Ending up in front of the window in front of a girl who he had never seen before Carrick turned his gray and blue eyes locking on the teacher as his tail swished behind him, ”Yeah?” there was a pause in the room before one or two of the students said something which caused the teacher to react, “Oh just surprised you’re here is all… have a seat and we will get class started…” she blinked a few times then turned to the board behind her only to occasionally look over her shoulder to make sure she wasn’t seeing a figment of her imagination.
Turning his attention back to the window Carrick eyed a robin taunting him by flying by the window and landing on a nearby tree. His eyes narrowed on the bird for a second before it flew off. No way in hell the bird would have the gull to try something like that when he was out there. Turning around to face the girl abruptly he smiled, ”Howya?” and then walked around to the seat behind her which was the only window seat free, frankly if he had it his way he would have preferred to sit in the back where he could do as he pleased but he showed up late which meant there was no worm for him.

Maddy watched the other students filter in after the teacher arrived, but before she could give the woman her note, something happened with another student. A male, a bit younger than herself… with a tail? When he turned to speak to the teacher, she noticed the appendage, and blinked at it for a moment. Then the boy turned issued the word "Howya" and sat down behind her. Coming to the conclusion that this was a form of greeting, like the 'Howdy' she had heard in movies in Romania, she responded softly. "Howdy…?" The sounds were somewhat pronounced by her accent and there was a slight lift at the end indicating that she was unsure about what she had said.
Getting the attention of the teacher, who looked at her curiously and came over. She handed the woman the note and gave her name. With a nod, the teacher wrote something in her notebook, and motioned for Maddy to get up and introduce herself. Her face immediately flamed a bright strawberry color, and after some prodding from the woman she slid out of her desk hesitantly.
"Class, we have a new student, from Romania, so I want you all to welcome her." With a nudge the teacher whispered to Maddy, "Go ahead and introduce yourself." Staring at the class, her eyes wide, she felt the memories touching her skin become louder. Like many different radios all playing different things, all the memories just waiting to be relived, the hum was very distracting. Stammering slightly, her voice a bit louder than usual so she could hear herself, she looked around the class. "I… I is mm… Madlaina."
Then bolting for her desk, she sat down quickly and stared at the top surface, her fingers lightly scratching the wooden pattern. The hum was so loud she couldn't tell if anyone was laughing at her, but they probably were. Glancing up at the teacher, who didn't seem to be teaching anything yet, Maddy delayed getting her things out, and sat trying to dull the roar of everything she was touching.
Carrick smirked when she responded to his Howya with a howdy not the most common response but he noticed the accent and had come to the conclusion that she must be a foreigner like himself. His suspicions were confirmed when she was introduced as a girl from Romania. Carrick smirked slightly, he remembered the attention of being the new kid and loved it but once the attention started to fade so did he, at least in class. He loved attention almost as he loved not being bored but it seemed he’d rather get attention and deal with the boredom for the day or at least till he decided to leave.
When she introduced herself Carrick eyed her up and down then looked out the window again as another bird possibly the same one flew by and landed on the tree again. His eyes narrowed a second time as his cat like tail twitched back and forth as if he was going to pounce it. He blinked once then heard a scuffle and the seat in front of him moved. Madlaina was back in front of him and for the first time he got a good look at the girl in front of him well the back of her head at least.
She was pretty though that never really meant anything to Carrick before if he couldn’t talk to a girl he didn’t really care what they looked like. A few snickers could be heard, as he looked across the room a few girls his age muttered something and laughed in their direction but stopped and blushed when they realized Carrick was looking at them. Girls were so mean to each other, he never really understood why that was nor did he really feel like investigating it. He could only assume it was to cover up their own insecurities.
The teacher was running through the rest of the attendance before she started eyeing the students. She wrote something on the board that Carrick didn’t really care to read before she lifted a book that had the words ‘Romeo and Juliet’ he then looked up to the blackboard and smirked slightly. It was classic lit and the book was Romeo and Juliet, which meant he wouldn’t be completely board with the class.
The teacher walked about the room and handed copies out to the students one at a time. He took his book and flipped through it once and smirked, it was the play version which was good because he had experience with the play version after all he played the Romeo at the circus for fun. After the books were passed out the teacher took her place at the head of the class and lifted the book this time he paid attention to what she had to say. “Now class is anyone familiar with the story of Romeo and… Carrick you need to go to the bathroom?” the teacher asked as soon as she saw his hand shoot up.
Carrick blinked and smirked, ”Ummm… not yet, you give me a minute or two and I’ll see if I need to,” a few kids in the classroom laughed and his smirk widened, ”I was raising my hand because I am familiar with the story.” Carrick said as he looked away from the kids and to the teacher that looked to the clock and back at Carrick with her jaw again slightly open not sure how to respond. “You are?” she asked in a disbelieving tone.
Clearing his throat Carrick recited one of the scene from memory his hand outstretched to the girl in front of him, ”But soft! What light through yonder breaks? It is the east and Juliet is the sun! Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief that thou her maid are far more fair than she.” he lowered his hand and looked to the teacher. Waiting for a response but it seemed he would get none for not only the teacher but a few of the students all looked at him with looks of surprise. ”What?”

With some slight success, the itch of memories fading only just enough for her to focus, Maddy pulled open her bag and got out the basic notebook and pen she had been given. Carefully reading the board, she jotted down her notes in Romanian. They would apparently be studying Romeo and Juliet. Madlaina knew the story, it was one of those stories that was taught everywhere, including her class in Romania, but she had never read it in English. Personally she thought it was the adults way of warning kids not to fall in love too young or you would die. It was a strange story to tell kids.
When the teacher put the book on her desk, Maddy hesitantly picked it up. She really would have to get a pair of gloves, what with all the things she was being handed all the time. Apparently the boy behind her was a… what was the word? A character in the class. The teacher had seemed surprised to see him in the beginning, and now seemed just as startled that he was participating.
Turning to look over her shoulder at him as he started to spout something, presumably a line from the play. It was his outstretched hand that made Maddy lean away as if he had the plague. She really needed a pair of gloves. Realizing how it might look, glancing around revealed that her behavior was odd, she cleared her throat after he asked the class ‘what’. “Touch me not good..” She waved her hand in front of her in a half dismissive, half protective gesture.
It was a class full of mutants, but apparently her words had an effect on the other students. Now they looked at her with a wary almost fear in their eyes. Maddy knew a touch based mutation was somewhat of an oddity, in her home country she had only heard of a few others and never met one. Realizing that they had taken her words slightly wrong, that her touch was dangerous to them like most touch mutations, Maddy decided not to correct the mistake. Having the group of teens be slightly afraid of her was preferable to having them thinking she was an easy target.
The class’s attention shifted to the girl in front of him as she said it wasn’t wise to touch her. Carrick blinked and realized that he had outstretched his hand and then realized that he was reenacting the circuses version of Romeo and Juliet. He blinked once again and lowered his hand and then smiled to the girl in front of him, ”No worries, wasn’t going to actually touch you, after all the scene didn’t call for it anyways, you would be up on a balcony anyways…” Carrick said as he noticed the teacher sat down running her hands through her hair.
A few girls giggled at his comment and the teachers reaction before the teacher looked to the girl in front of Carrick. Then back to the class it took her a moment to regain her composure before she continued to teach the class but in Carrick’s opinion she was still somewhat out of it. “Now class as…” she cleared her throat “As Carrick as demonstrated I want you to get into pairs and reenact a scene to the class from the play… Carrick since you seem to know so much on the subject… can’t believe I’m saying that but why don’t you help Madlaina out?”
A few upset ‘awws’ could be heard as a few of the male students lost the chance to talk to the new pretty exchange student. Carrick smirked glad he could confuse the teacher, ”If that’s what you’d like… and if it’s alright with her…” Carrick said as he nodded to the girl in front of him.

When he didn’t, and said he wouldn’t, touch her, Madlaina was able to relax a bit. She didn’t recognize the word ‘balcony’ but from the rest of the sentence was able to determine it was some type of high window or ledge. Then there was giggling and strange looks being passed around.
Hearing the teacher say the boy’s name, pairs, and then her own name, Madlaina determined she had been assigned the boy behind her. Carrick. Turning to her new partner, Maddy nodded. It was fine with her to have a partner, hopefully he would be helpful rather than troublesome, but judging by the noises the other students were making they didn’t like the idea as much as she did. “Is okay to me, but I not so good at reading.”
Though she knew the basic story, she hadn’t memorized it when she had studied it previously. As long as he didn’t mind going a bit slower and helping her a little with the translation she would be alright. ”You help that way?”
Watching as a few of the other kids gave each other looks signaling they already picked their respective partners for the assignment. Carrick looked back to Madlaina and smirked, ”Yeah, I think I can help you that way…” Carrick said as he lifted the old dusty book and flipped through the pages lazily not really looking for a page in particular. ”You familiar with the story at all?” Carrick asked as he set the book down and looked to the girl.
Upon this glance he took in a few more of her features, her brown hair, the color of her eyes and even her facial features, in shot he was staring for a moment. Not something he did often but did when he was intrigued by a person her accent he decided making her more interesting than he would have thought she was without it.
She was Romanian so aid the teacher but why did she come to America, she was a foreigner like him he from Ireland her from Romania however unlike him she didn’t really seem like she was comfortable being different than everyone else. Thinking more about the first time he came to America he looked down then back up to the girl ”How do you like being in America, Madlaina?” Carrick asked knowing full well he was getting off topic but still asked the question anyways. It was a question he felt like asking in an attempt to get to know the girl he was partnered up with a bit better. It was his way of trying to make the person he was talking to a little more comfortable with the situation because from the looks of it Madlaina looked a little skittish.
Nodding when he said he could help her with the reading, she followed his lead, picking up the book and flipping through it. Though the letters were familiar, the text was awkward and foreign. Did she ____ the story? He must have said something that was similar to ‘know’. “Yes, I know this. I did learn it in old class.” Still flipping through the pages Madlaina found her thoughts drifting to before she knew she had powers, when she went to school in Romania.
Startled out of her thoughts, when he asked a question, she glanced up. After a moment she shrugged. “Is okay. It not home but… Home not home too. You not be, ugh, from here too?”
((OOC, sorry it's so short. I have to get back in the groove of this thread, lol.))
So she did know the story the question now was what part would they reenact? The balcony scene? That was going to be everyone’s likely choice, well at least to all those groups that had a boy and a girl. Looking over his shoulder and around the room Carrick mentally smirked, there were only two other groups with a boy and a girl both were couples outside the classroom and from what he could tell they were too interested in the play. A shame… to think that he wouldn’t have any competition one of the only things he was good at in the class room and he couldn’t compare his skill level to any one else… and everyone wondered why he didn’t like coming to class.
Shaking his head Carrick started, ”Nope, only been here a little over a year and a half… been here at the mansion for a few months though…” maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to converse with her outside of the class assignment? She seemed surprised at the question he asked, granted even he would admit it was random but he remembered what his mother said to him one time, ‘If you want to help someone get to know them a bit first, that way they will be more willing to listen…’ it was something he didn’t often try seeing as he never had to help anyone with anything before. Well at least nothing academic wise, everything else didn’t require a swapping of personal information.
”It’s a rough transition from where I was before, the circus didn’t really have any rules there and school was basically nonexistent… tough transition… though it’s fortunate enough I don’t have to learn a new language…” he paused for a moment and then turned a page in his book… ”Must be hard…”
”…. So how about the balcony scene?” Carrick asked figuring that everyone knew that scene better than anything else in the play. After all it was one of the biggest Hollywood scene in almost any shakesphere play, and from what he demonstrated before they were given their assignment it was clear that Carrick already had his lines memorized.

Maddy wondered what being there for a few months would feel like. After only two weeks or so, she felt like a lot had happened but it wasn’t the kind of stuff that were accomplishments. She learned her way around the main parts of the Mansion… but still got lost. She had gone into the city… but had gotten scared and was still working up the courage to go back. She had sort-of started making friends… but hadn’t really seen anyone more than in passing.
Hopefully after being here for a while, she would have her powers under control enough that she wouldn’t be afraid to touch anyone or anything. She was tired of waking up in the night in cold sweats or silent screams, tired of hesitating and flinching every time she touched someone, tired of memories that weren’t her own flooding her mind.
Circus? Madlaina’s eyes widened in interest. She had only been to the circus once, but she remembered liking the animals and candy, wishing she could do the cool things the acrobats and other people did. But she could see how it would be hard if you were a kid.
At the mention of school, she nodded. “I not go school for long time, because mutant. I mmmm” She paused with a blush of embarassment, tapping her chest as she tried to fill in English words for what she wanted to say. “I not feel good to be slow. Not… ah… not in right spot?” Her hand indicated levels of some kind. She felt behind because she wasn’t in the grade with the others her own age, and even though it wasn’t her fault she still felt shame as if she had failed.
Glancing back at the book when he did, she tried to match the pages. Then she shrugged. “Any is okay… Is all English, so is same hard to re-know.” There were only a few parts where Romeo and Juliet were alone together, one the balcony which was the most commonly known. Perhaps that would be easier to work with. Maddy nodded, trying to find the correct section.
Carrick smiled as he looked to Madlaina and nodded his head, ”It’s alright, I shouldn’t even be in this grade… guess I’m lucky with tests… you could tell how surprised the teacher was when I showed up to class let alone recited some of the play.” he smiled and looked over the page with the balcony scene pointing out the page number to Madlaina then looking at it he came up with an idea.
”Hey do you remember any of it in your own language?” Carrick asked curiously as his tail swayed slightly behind him, ”Cause I mean if it will be easier for you I have no problem with you speaking in Romanian, if fact I think it would make more sense…” Carrick smiled, ”If not I could walk you through and help you before we have to perform to the class.”
He looked from the book to the teacher that was watching him like a hawk, no doubt she was wondering if Carrick was going to get up and leave the class and decide not to come back. He wouldn’t not today at least as long as they stick to the subject they were working on at least. He was one for plays and this story in particular was one he enjoyed.

Maddy nodded. She had known other kids like Carrick before, they could not show up or hardly pay attention but somehow they never failed or got behind. Madlaina wasn’t so lucky. She was always studying, always having to work hard, because otherwise she didn’t do well and she hated to fail.
When he mentioned doing it in her own language Maddy perked up, more interested in that than in doing it in English… Less studying. But she wasn’t sure how it would be better. “How it would be good in Romanian? I did think Romeo and Juliet was same speaking?”
If not she would have to get help somewhere, either take up Carrick’s time or go bother someone else to tutor her. It wouldn’t be too hard to get Romeo and Juliet in Romanian, Shakespeare was so widely published and she had originally read it that way, just if she would be able to get a copy in the mansion or New York in time for the next class. Maybe the internet would have one she could print out.
”They were speaking the same language, however seeing as there is a gap in knowledge here I don’t think the teacher will mind,” Carrick said shrugging his shoulders slightly wondering if he answered Madlaina’s question accurately. She was right she didn’t speak English too well but then again he was surprised she could speak as well as she did if she just came from her home country in Romania.
”If not I’ll help you with the translation, this stuff shouldn’t be too hard to memorize if you already learned the story once…” Carrick said as his hand shot up waiting for the teacher to walk around to answer his question. ”How about we ask the teacher and then see what she says?” Carrick asked as the girl in front of him as the teacher walked around slowly not really surprised Carrick had his hand up.
“You have to go to the bathroom?” she asked as she rolled her eyes and looked from Madlaina to Carrick, “be fast about it and make sure you come back!” the teacher said as she narrowed her eyes on Carrick, ”Ummmm…. I don’t have to go to the bathroom…” Carrick said figuring he deserved this kind of reaction from the teacher seeing as he used the ‘I have to go to the bathroom’ escape before.
“Oh… Sorry, what do you need then?” she asked afraid she was going to regret asking that. ”Well,” Carrick said looking at Madlaina for a second then to the teacher, ”I was just wondering if it would be alright if we did this scene in two languages… a little different but it would be easier for Madlaina…” Carrick looked up to the teacher and smiled hopefully.
She still wasn’t sure if the teacher would let them do it or even how they could make it make sense, but Madlaina was willing to try. And his offer to help if they had to do it in English was welcome. Madlaina was sure she would need the help, but would rather do it in Romanian all the same. So she glanced between the book and the teacher as Carrick motioned her over with a raised hand.
Maddy didn’t quite understand the bathroom discussion, there seemed to be something carried over from a previous encounter, so she waited on a slightly higher level of alertness. The teacher seemed a bit stumped by the question at first, and took a moment to think about it. Seeing that the woman might need some more encouragement, she spoke up.
”Yes… Work go better… easier, I not bad in Romanian… ?” Peering up at the woman, after stealing the word ‘easier’ from Carrick, Madlaina put on her best innocent and helpless face, which seemed to work well around this place. She could see the older woman’s face start to cave in and stifled the happy grin, willing to wait until she left to celebrate.
