The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

10:00 already? Katrina hit the alarm clock, fumbling around with the unfamiliar buttons until she found the one that stopped the buzzing. It was an annoying alarm, but effective.
Why did 10:00 no longer feel like sleeping in?
Why was she getting up again? Wasn't it a Saturday? Oh, that's right. Meeting Iris this morning. Katrina's thoughts were not yet up to their normal levels of coherency.
Katrina threw back the covers and swung her legs over the side of the be. That was always a good first step when first getting up. After sitting on the bed for a minute, staring at the outfit she had picked out the night before, she realized that she should probably put it on instead of just looking at it.
It was a nice outfit, with soft charcoal gray pants, and a silky pale pink blouse. There was also had a gray scarf with pink flowers on it that went with the blouse. Whoever had picked out these clothes for her had a sense of style, and a good eye for sizes. Everything she had tried on had fit her perfectly.
Once she started moving she actually woke up. It only took her about fifteen minutes to get dressed, brush and braid her hair, tie the scarf around the end of her braid, and brush her teeth and she was ready. She sat on the unmade bed and waited, looking around the room.
Maybe it would be better if she hung up those clothes she had left on the floor after she tried them on. And maybe she should make the bed too.
Fifteen minutes later, her room was presentable again, and the time had come for Hunter to pick her up.
Hunter was for once not wearing a sharp and expensive looking suit. Instead he wore a simple pair of black jeans, stylish yet relatively cheap trainers and a plain grey, short sleeve shirt. Also his hair was no longer tide back, but hung loose at his shoulders. The most noticeable difference however were the blue contact lenses he was wearing.
Reaching Katrina’s room he knocked on the door and said, “Katrina, you ready?” He was both apprehensive and excited about Katrina meeting Paragon, but kept both hidden under a calm, cool exterior.
Hunter looked much more casual this morning. No fancy suit today. It made him look very different, but it might just be because Katrina hadn't seen him anything but fancy clothes. He still looked nice though. There was something else different about him as well. It was one of those things that is hard to put your finger on, like when someone wears glasses instead of contacts one day. Oh. Contacts. Right.
“Do your eyes change color?” she asked curiously. “I thought they were gray at first, then silver, and now they're blue.” Maybe it was part of his mutation. These days anything out of the ordinary could usually be attributed to mutations.
“I’ll be passing myself as human,” Hunter explained, “and silver eyes don’t really help in that respect. So I think that some simple blue contact lenses should help me in that respect. Now, let’s go and meet Iris shall we?”
Hunter led Katrina through the maze of corridors that was Mondragon labs towards the infirmary. If paragon wasn’t there, which was quite likely, it would be a simple matter to locate her.
Mr. Antonytail was dressed casually, but in attitude he was all business. He explained the reason for the change in eye color as part of blending in with humans. Katrina couldn't imagine wearing contacts just to blend in. She was a little squeamish about touching eyes, especially her own. It made sense that he would have to look like a human if he was trying to blend in and infiltrate various organizations at a time when mutants who didn't voluntarily register got dragged to concentration camps. Especially if he was going to go to the Church of Humanity to try and convince them to stop putting so much pressure on congress. They probably wouldn't be too sympathetic listening to someone with silver eyes, given their name.
As he swept down the hall, Katrina trotted to keep up. She didn't recognize the route they were taking, so it was probably to somewhere she hadn't been before. As they walked, she imagined what Hunter would look like with various colored eyes. Green would look cool with his black hair and gold would be interesting since it was the opposite of his normal silver color. Red was already taken by Kaz, and would look creepy with black hair instead of silver, almost evil. She brushed that thought away and instead imagined him with violet eyes. That would be cool. She would kind of like to have violet eyes herself. Katrina remembered that Calley had blue eyes as a tiger, and tried to imagine Hunter with tiger eyes, yellow with cat pupils, as if they had switched. She was still thinking about the tiger eyes when they reached a door with a plaque reading "Infirmary".

At that particular moment, Iris was laying flat on her stomach. There was a soft hiss-slash-growl coming from somewhere in the room. But despite the area's small size, she was having trouble pinning down the sound's location, and it's brown-furred source. She groaned softly.
~~~~~~~~~
An hour earlier she had returned to the Infirmary with bowl of shrimp for her pet; there were several cats roaming the labs apparently, and one of the Canteen workers was an animal lover, and was more than happy to find some 'spare tidbits'. Iris hadn't expected such gourmet 'tidbits', but she was sure Ebony would be happy. As expected, the little Siamese had murred and purred and twined around her mother's legs until the bowl was placed within pouncing distance on the bed. Like a true animal fanatic, she let the kit claim the bed to eat on, while she retired to a nearby chair, curled up, and promptly fell asleep again.
Whether the tiredness was a side effect of the painkillers, a stressful situation, or just pent up weariness from the past month or so, she didn't know. Either way, soft snoring drifted through the room after only a minute or so. She stirred when a heaviness planted itself in her lap with much whisker-tickling and purring, and her hand moved of its own habit to rub Ebony's ears and chin.
The next thing she knew, a fierce hiss shattered her sleep, along with the sudden removal of the weight. "Ow!!" The exclamation followed as the cat's disappearance left a set of clawpoints in her pants and ankle.
Iris blinked, trying to clear the blur from her grey eyes.
~~~~~~~~~
And that brings the story back to Iris on her belly, trying to figure out both where her cat could possibly have secreted herself in such a small space, and what had set her off in the first place?
Hunter was unaware of the changes to his eyes that Katrina was unwittingly doing. The lab employees however were very aware of it, and gave him double takes as he passed. Hunter put this down to the casual clothes that he was wearing and so dismissed it.
Reaching the Infirmary he opened the door to find his daughter lying flat on her stomach. His keen sense of hearing swiftly determined the reason. Ebony had gone into hiding. It took him only a moment to locate the feline, who had taken refuge in the bottom draw of one of the cabinets. Clearing his throat Hunter said, “Iris, time we were leaving.”
Katrina followed Hunter through the door and saw a black haired woman in her twenties, lying on the floor. She had grey eyes, like Katrina's. So this was Iris. She was pretty Katrina decided, and definitely in her twenties, which meant Hunter was definitely not in his twenties.

“Iris, time we were leaving.”
Hunter. Well, that explained Ebony's disappearing act. It was going to be interesting having that pair under the same roof for awhile....
Iris huffed slightly, but clamped down on any sarcastic comments. She pushed herself to her hands and knees and turned to look at him. Her irritation expression quickly switched to surprise, for two reasons.
First of all, "I thought we were trying to blend into a group of zealots, no a zoo. I don't think cat eyes are going to help. What happened to the blue contacts?"
Surprise Number Two came in the form of a young girl. "Oh! Hello..." This time the glance in Hunter's direction was one of curiosity. She'd been surprised enough to see someone as young as Calley in the Labs, but this girl couldn't be any older than twelve or thirteen, maybe. And she looked vaguely familiar as well....
She waited for an introduction, and an explanation.
Hunter was surprised by the cat eye comment and cast a quick glance to the reflective surface of the stainless steel cupboards. He smiled, Katrina must have let her mind wonder and thought of Hunter with cat eyes. “Iris, this is Katrina,” Hunter said, introducing the girl, “And she’s the reason for my current eye colour.”
Turning to Katrina he looked her in the eyes and said, “Do you mind changing my eyes back to the blue of the contact lenses? As impressive as these look Iris is right, I’m trying to blend in with humans.” He gave Katrina a smile to show he wasn’t mad. “Iris, if you want to retrieve Ebony she’s in that draw,” he said, pointing to where the feline had taken refuge.
Cat eyes? How did they know she had been thinking about cat eyes? She looked up at Hunter, he did indeed have cat eyes. She could see both the blue and the yellow colors at the same time, but they didn't mix to become green. They were simply both without mixing. It was an odd look.
“Oops, sorry,” she said, imagining them back to their unnatural blue color again. She hadn't meant to actually change them. She needed to keep a more careful eye on her imagination, apparently. She wondered what exactly the trigger was, the difference between imagination and using her powers. They were so similar that she couldn't tell them apart. She'd have to figure it out, and soon, so she didn't cause any real problems with her lack of control.
As Hunter introduced her, she held out her hand to Iris, either to shake or to help her to her feet.

Iris watched in fascination as the tiger eyes slowly faded away. She gave the girl a one-sided smile.
"You did that? Wow...." Her tone held a bit of admiration in it, and rightly so.
“Iris, if you want to retrieve Ebony she’s in that drawer.” She followed his point with a frown. How on earth had she managed to squeeze in there??
"Thanks." That was actually short for, 'Thanks for scaring her into the drawer in the first', not 'Thanks for telling me where she is.' However, the clipped tone of the word wasn't quite as disguiseable as the meaning.
“It's nice to meet you, and, um... who is Ebony?”
Iris wiped away the frown and shook the girl's outstretched hand. "Nice to meet you too Katrina." She let Katrina help pull her to her feet, grabbing the bed rail so she wouldn't pull the girl over in the process. "Ebony is a snake posing as a cat. It's the only way I can account for how she got inside there...." She made her way to the cat carrier in the corner of the room, pausing to shut the door behind Hunter along the way. Unconsciously she avoided looking at him.
As she moved, she activated her water gem. Extracting Ebony herself would involve much scratching, and possibly more chasing, something Iris wasn't willing to deal with at that moment. Instead, she used other methods at her disposal.
Though her hair remained black, her eyes changed to a pale purple. She smiled and winked at Katrina, laid-back and easy-going under the jewel's influence.
"Better plug your ears. I swear this kitty's voice can bend metal."
A stream of water floated out of the bathroom sink. Acting like hands, the water gently extracted the now yowling feline from her hiding place and placed her inside the cat carrier. As the water returned to the sink, a feeling of deja vu washed over her. She sat down in the nearby chair a bit shakily. She shoved away the memory of her first days in New York, and the grey returned to her eyes.
She looked at Katrina and tilted her head slightly. "You look really familiar," she remarked, "but I can't place where?" She turned to Hunter for an explanation.
Hunter watched Katrina and Paragon meet, seeing that Paragon greeted her with a much more pleasant tone of voice than she had him. Her ‘thanks’ carried an air that somehow it was his fault that the cat had gone into hiding. Once she had extracted the cat with her liquid gem.
“Katrina was one of several mansion residents to who I have offered safe haven at my labs. Here she is perfectly safe from the government’s malicious intentions. Intentions that we are going to thwart.”
Katrina responded by blushing and looking down, “I didn't even know I was doing it. I need to learn to control it.”
After she helped Iris to her feet, Iris explained that Ebony was a snake posing as a cat. Was she a mutant pet? Katrina had never heard of those before, but figured it could be possible.
Then Iris' eyes changed color to pale purple. At first Katrina thought she had caused an illusion without meaning to, but she hadn't even been thinking of it. There was also no double image of illusion mixed with reality, which meant they really had changed. Iris' wink confirmed that it was Iris herself that had changed them.
"Better plug your ears. I swear this kitty's voice can bend metal," Iris old her. Maybe Ebony she really was a mutant cat. She took Iris' warning seriously and put her fingers in her ears. She watched wide eyed as Iris directed a stream of water from the sink to arc across the room, forming clear watery hands that wrapped around the cat and lifted her into her carrier. The fluorescent lights above made the water sparkle beautifully as Iris returned it to the sink. Katrina wouldn't even have thought of imagining up something like that. It was really cool. The cat on the other hand, had not thought the trick was cool. The cat hadn't liked the water at all, and Katrina was glad that she had her ears plugged. Apparently the cat's bending metal powers did not work on the bars of her cage and she didn't change back into a snake to escape through the holes in between the bars. She had, in fact, the appearance of a completely normal cat who was wet and annoyed.
Once the cat and water were back in their places, Iris sat down, her eyes changing back to grey. It looked like using her powers made her a little tired too Then she said Katrina looked familiar. Katrina tried to remember if she had ever met Iris before. While she was trying to comb though memories of the faces of people who had come to her house, Hunter told Iris that Katrina was a mansion resident seeking shelter from the law.
“Except that I was only at the mansion for one day before it was raided,” Katrina added to Hunter's explanation. “Before that I lived in Virginia. Have you ever been there?”

“I didn't even know I was doing it. I need to learn to control it.”
Iris smiled and shrugged. "Practice makes perfect. You'll get it down in no time, I'm sure." Hmm... that sounded very 'teacher-ish'....
“Katrina was one of several mansion residents to who I have offered safe haven at my labs."
Iris nodded. That's why she looked familiar; she was the girl she'd seen at the Mansion, just after it was destroyed. She was relieved to see Katrina was safe after all. Or so it appeared.
"Here she is perfectly safe from the government’s malicious intentions. Intentions that we are going to thwart.”
<"How eloquent,"> she thought to herself. <"And arrogant."> She didn't share Hunter's conviction at all; in fact she was already imagining everything that could possibly go wrong.....
“Except that I was only at the mansion for one day before it was raided,” Katrina added to Hunter's explanation. “Before that I lived in Virginia. Have you ever been there?”
Iris shook her head. "No, I sure haven't. For part of my job, I transport animals, and the ones I do aren't allowed in Virgina. I hear it's pretty in the fall though. Lots of color?"
Her gaze was on Katrina, but she was still curious as to why Hunter had brought her along. He wasn't planning on her helping them, was he? It would be far to dangerous, unless the girl had another power she hadn't displayed yet. And surely Hunter would only have her come if she could be of some use to him. Her distrust immediately led her to assume that he had some hidden agenda, and it angered her slightly. But she would let him know later, in private.
