The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Rebecca was already gathering her coat to head downtown. She loved Maya, but it had been an emotionally turbulent few days; if she went instead of Rebecca, the words exchanged with Sveta might get ugly. Rebecca was frustrated, but she could find it in her to be the intermediary here.
She kissed Maya's cheek and Iris' forehead. "Ah'll be back soon with answers."
Her visit to Haven's Headquarters lasted two hours. After getting first-hand accounts and pouring over the security footage, Rebecca had her answer. The news only made her angry, but she tried her best to focus her anger on the man responsible and not Svetlana or Haven.
She doubted Maya was in the mood to limit collateral damage.
Returning to the shelter they were temporarily calling home, Rebecca put her coat on a hanger and took a deep breath, finding Maya. "Sae... we were right." Deep down, Rebecca was hoping this was a natural phenomenon and Iris' powers were just hibernating on their own, but that was just a pipedream. Someone was, indeed, responsible for this.
Maya fed Iris and then just held her until she went down for a nap. Everything around them was new and strange in the apartment they had been given, but Iris was a good sleeper at least. She sat by the bed, lost in thought as she watched her daughter sleep. At least she was alright, Maya reminded herself. Iris was not hurt or ill or scared. Just... a little girl with no powers.
When she heard Becca come in, she left the bedroom and pulled the door closed. Becca's words made her heart sink.

Rebecca was glad Iris was sleeping in the other room. She didn't want this conversation to happen with her in the room; kids had an amazing capacity for empathy, and Rebecca and Maya were about to be fountains of negative energy.
"There was a man sheltering in Haven; a mystic. Samuel Travis, a detective apparently, had a moment where he could have interacted with Iris and the others missed it." Svetlana had enough on her plate that day, but it still stung knowing Iris was left vulnerable for even a moment. "Haven's already pulling together resources tae track him down, and Ah've put out word tae some mystics frae the battle tae be on the lookout."
It was not much. She wished she had more to offer Maya after everything that happened, but Detective Travis was in the wind. "He'll be found, and we'll undae this hex if it doesnae fall off on its own first." She was hoping a spell like this could only be active for so long without some kind of continued interaction, but magic was still varied and she did not understand its limits.
>>"There was a man sheltering in Haven; a mystic."
Maya let out an exhale, trying to keep her composure. And failing. She ran her hands through her hair. She knew where this was going now. The fact that Iris' powers were blocked, not taken, barely put a dent in the wave of anger she felt. A goddamn mystic. in Haven. She barely heard the rest of it.
>>"He'll be found, and we'll undae this hex if it doesnae fall off on its own first."
"You're telling me" her voice was quiet, trembling with barely contained fury; her fingernails dug into her palm. "That Haven let a goddamn cultist put his hands on my daughter?"

Rebecca knew this information was going to go over poorly, but the shaking in Maya's tone worried her. She was trying as hard as she could to make things manageable, but everyone had their limits.
And yet, she had to at least try. "They had nae way ay knowing; up til that point, he'd given nae hint ay being on the other side. Iris toddled off for a moment." She was trying to make excuses, but even she was half-hearted. "Ah'm furious. Sveta's furious. She's threatenin' tae kill him herself."
Rebecca took a hesitant step forward. "We'll get through this... just like everything else."
"Oh she's furious is she?" Maya snapped. She knew deep down she was handling this poorly, but she had no reserves left to control her anger. Haven, parading as their savior, had let them down. In the worst possible way. Knowing that she was not going to be able to control her volume, Maya walked out to the kitchen before Becca could reach her. That was the farthest point from the bedroom. "F**K!" She swore, leaning on the counter. She tried to control her breathing. Becca. Kalos. Now Iris. After the battle, after losing their home... Once again, no one was safe.

Rebecca hastily followed Maya, but she trailed behind to give her space because she clearly chose to stay away. The curse was loud enough to startle Rebecca, who was expecting anger, but not shouting. She closed the kitchen door behind her, hoping that would let Iris sleep undisturbed.
Rubbing her arm nervously, Rebecca exhaled a held breath. "It's fucked. Ah know. It's something we cannae gae back and change." That was how she had to look at these situations; what ifs weren't helpful. If they could go back and change things, where else would they have sent Iris besides Haven? It was just shit luck. Or fate, but she would never say that aloud.
>>"It's fucked. Ah know. It's something we cannae gae back and change."
"Well, if we wait a few days, maybe someone will f**k with the timeline too." Maya growled. Not being able to change things didn't exactly offer any relief to her current mental state. She really wanted to break something, but Becca closing the door reminded her they had a toddler sleeping next door. A toddler with no powers.
"It's not even about her powers." She responded to her unspoken thought. "I don't... that's not the worst part. The worst part is a goddamn stranger doing anything to her, without us being there... without anyone seeing... what the actual f**k is wrong with these people? Was blowing up a goddamn school not enough?!"

Rebecca wanted to ease Maya's anger, but her anger was justified. Despite all the reasons, what happened was terrible and inexcusable. She couldn't make a joke about a changed timeline having nowhere to go but up. Levity fell flat right now.
The pit in Rebecca's stomach sank deeper when Maya reminded her of what was already on her mind. "Ah don't know what this guy's deal is. Maybe he's been in the cult all his life." It wasn't what Maya wanted to hear, but Rebecca still tried to find some sympathy for people who were indoctrinated by the Welldrinker Cult. Maybe that was a personal bias she had to address; these people's actions were their own, and indoctrination was not freedom from accountability. "Maybe he's just a fucking psycho. The Cataclysm definitely was. But he's gone now, and we'll find this Travis guy. Ah'm trying tae take solace that Iris wasn't hurt—or worse..."
Take solace. Maya had been telling herself the same thing. It rang hollow. Iris was not hurt, Maya was not even sure she had realized yet what had happened to her, although she had been more restless than usual. But Maya knew. She folded her arms as she turned to look at Becca, still trembling with raw anger. It was easier to be angry than to be scared.
"And if it doesn't go away?..."
She had just begun to wrap her head around Becca and Kalos not being mutants anymore. They were definitely handling it better than her. She still had nightmares about the time they were taken. And newfound worries about letting Aoife go free in the battle. And now there was someone else, in the wind, who had hurt Iris for whatever godforsaken bigoted reason...

Rebecca liked to think she was good at soothing Maya's anger and frustration when life got hard, because that was life for an X-Man. She was failing now; Maya was just too angry, and every point she made was too right for Rebecca to argue. "We're gonna find a way tae fix this," she reaffirmed, because she had to believe that. "This guy's a normal mystic; Ah refuse tae believe he can keep this seal up forever." This wasn't like The Unmaker.
The solution Maya had in mind, however, caught Rebecca off guard. It was the kind of thing people said when they were angry as hyperbole, but Rebecca could hear it in Maya's voice; she was not joking. "Ye dinnae mean that, Maya. He deserves justice, but... ye're nae a killer."
>>"We're gonna find a way tae fix this. This guy's a normal mystic; Ah refuse tae believe he can keep this seal up forever."
Maya knew Becca was right. But on the other hand, the guy being just a normal mystic was terrifying too. Because if that was true, than any mystic could do this to any mutant, anytime... She frowned. She had never met the man, but she knew his kind. Not mystics. Bigots. And she hated him.
>>"Ye dinnae mean that, Maya. He deserves justice, but... ye're nae a killer."
"Aren't I?" she said, more quietly, looking at her wife. It had been two days since the battle. In the midst of the exhaustion and the worries for Iris and grief for the Mansion, there was also the memory of putting the Cataclysm in the mirror. Knowing full well he would die.

Two simple words could do so much damage. Rebecca looked at Maya, meeting her eyes, and she could see it; the thing she was holding onto since the battle.
Everything was so hectic in the moment. The Fifth Supreme had run the whole team ragged. He had decimated the Mansion. He was mad with power and ready to tear himself apart to kill everyone in his way. And Maya mirrored him, then let the mirror shatter.
They had always talked about it; what that could do to someone trapped inside a mirror. They never knew for sure if it was certain death, but with the condition the madman was in, Maya had to know.
"That was different," she said softly. "Ye had nae choice. He was a walking bomb. He would've killed sae many. Ye made... an impossible choice."
It didn't feel different. Maya new that Becca loved her, and she was the kindest person she knew anyway. She could even forgive Aoife somehow, for what she had done to her. All in all, Becca was a better person. She would find an excuse for Maya too.
"I did the one thing the X-men don't do." she noted, shaking her head. She had faced monsters before. All kinds. Hell, she'd faced down Aoife, and managed to only shoot her in a non-lethal way. "And Iris..." she bit her lips. "I'd do it again." If it came to that, to keep her safe. They didn't know what this man was planning, or capable of.

"Not every situation can be as clean cut as ye want it," she countered. "The Cataclysm wasnae just a monster; he was a threat. Ye did what ye did tae keep us all safe." Of course, that didn't matter to Maya; the blood on her hands was still red in her eyes.
Rebecca tried to see the situation through Maya's eyes. She was ready to kill because she believed she was a killer. That was a slippery slope for a person whose sense of duty and justice were ingrained in who she was. Rebecca panicked, because this was the road where she lost the soul of the person she loved. "If ye hae tae cross that line tae protect our family... Ah understand." She could not be a hypocrite; if someone raised a weapon to Iris or Kalos in Rebecca's presence, they would be missing a hand.
"But ye're nae a killer. Ye're a good person who had tae take a life. If ye hunt this man down tae kill him... that's a killer. Dinnae let this guy or The Cataclysm turn ye intae something ye hate."
