The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Emma continued her walk to the market. She was jamming out to the music on her ipod and finishing the last bit of her coffee. She turned the corner and saw the market area that she was gonna check out for her groceries. She noticed to her benefit that there were a few markets all in the same general area offering lots of different fresh produce. She smiled at the thought of being able to pick lots of different options from each market.
She walked up to the first market and began to look at the produce they offered. She saw some fresh ears of corn still in the husks with brown tassles at the end and she saw some big bright red globe tomatoes sitting close by as well. She saw that the market offered a canvas shopping bag for cheap to hold all the produce you bought. She gladly took one and then picked up 2 ears of corn and 4 tomatoes. She knew those tomatoes would be great to use in her Mom's tomato sauce. She continued looking around, gazing at the apples and pears as well. She picked up a couple of each as well. She also grabbed a good bunch of green beans and a head of cabbage. These would make her Mom really happy.
She noticed her bag getting sorta full so she grabbed another couple canvas bags to use at the other markets once her first one got full. She continued to look at this first market still looking over the big selection. People were all around her grabbing their selections, picking the best looking candidates and leaving.
It seemed like such a normal day. And such a good day to work on figuring out what her tingly hand meant and why her dad turned into a cat. But could she replicate what she did? She waited for her hand to tingle as she continued to pick her groceries. "I guess we'll see what happens.", she thought, "If it even happens again. Maybe it was just a fluke."
It was Zoe's day off, and she decided that it was going to be just a day to relax. She had spent so much time working, researching, and making non-work trips to the zoo over the last few weeks that she just wanted a day to herself. A day to relax and do things that she enjoyed for herself.
The only problem with that was that her fridge was far too empty to do any decent cooking. Which meant just one thing: Zoe needed to go shopping. That being the case, Zoe didn’t have anything particular in mind to make, she figured that she could always decide what to make based on what she found at the market.
Zoe started with just walking around, seeing what all was available. There really wasn’t much point in buying something that she wasn’t going to end up needing, afterall. And there was always the chance that she would change her mind on what to make based on seeing one thing. As she walked along, looking at all the available options, Zoe was constantly going over in her head the different options for what she could do.
But there were so many things that she could make, so many different options that would taste good. She was probably going to have to make a few different things. Not that that would be the worst idea in the world, Zoe realized. It would give her food to take to work for the next couple of days, and she did have the rest of the day that she could spend in the kitchen.
So Zoe started through the market again, slower this time, grabbing a couple of onions here, peppers there. Zoe still wasn’t sure what she would end up making, but she knew that she would figure it out before long.

Emma noticed that as she was picking up a few onions and peppers, her left hand began to tingle and it seemed like a strong force of some kind was drawing her toward the lady next to her. She was the only one that started giving her hand that tingly feeling the whole while she had been at the market.
She remembered back to when she felt that feeling before when she used to show houses back in Washington. What did she do then to make her hand stop tingling then? She thought for a few seconds and remembered that she would touch them with her full hand for a few seconds and it would suddenly stop. Maybe she got something from them when she touched them, but what?
Emma quickly had to devise a way to touch this woman and figure out what she was getting from her. So Emma suddenly turned to the lady, placed her hand on her right shoulder blade and said to her, "Hey, I'm sorry to bother you like this, but could you help me for a moment? I want to cook something really special for my Mom with some of this fresh produce, but I have no idea what to cook and what I should grab. She's done so much for me and I wanna return the favor. I've just kinda been grabbing a few things here and there that looked good. I'm kinda new around here, but you look so friendly and like you know lots of good things to cook. So do you mind helping me out a bit?"
Emma's hand had stopped tingling by the time she finished asking the lady for her help. She looked the lady in the face with a nice smile and tried to be as sweet and charming as she could. She waited for the lady's reply.
As Zoe was picking out a couple of zucchinis, she felt someone touch her shoulder. Looking over, Zoe saw a woman standing there asking for help figuring out something that she could cook for her mom.
That was a little strange, even for New York, Zoe couldn’t help but think. But the woman seemed sincere in her request, and simply wanted a bit of help figuring out what to make. ”Honestly, I’m trying to figure out what to make myself,” Zoe answered the woman after a moment.
Looking back at the produce in front of her, Zoe tilted her head a bit as she thought. ”The more I’m looking at these zucchinis, the more I’m thinking of doing a veggie lasagna. Slicing these thin to use instead of the noodles.
“But what kind of food does your mom like?” Zoe asked, looking back over at the woman.

Emma continued to smile at the lady and got excited at the way the lady was describing the veggie lasagna. It really did sound good and something that her mom would like too.
When asked about what kinda foods her mom liked, Emma replied, "My mom loves lots of different veggies. She loves Italian foods especially. My Mom also makes a killer homemade tomato sauce. I've tried making it before, but its no where near as good as hers. But the way you decribed the veggie lasagna sounds delicious. I wouldn't have thought to use zucchini slices to replace the pasta. That's genius."
Emma grabbed a few zucchini and put them into the bag, but continued to talk to the lady. "So do you still put some meat in yours or is it completely all veggie? If you don't use meat, what kind of filling do you use between the zuchinni slices?", she asked.
Emma was quite happy with herself. She was figuring out how to work this thing she did out and it seemed like it had worked. Her hand wasn't tingling anymore. She just had to figure out what exactly she got from the lady. And she was picking up a great recipe to have for dinner with her Mom.
She had realized that she had completely forgotten to introduce herself and also get the lady's name. How was she to keep track of people and what she was getting from them if she couldn't remember names, what they did, and how to find them. That is, if she would even be able keep up with them. There was a good possibility that there might be lots of people in New York that made her hand tingle. But she had to try and figure it all out somehow.
"You must forgive me, but I realized I haven't introduced myself or anything. My name is Emma. It's nice to meet you. What's your name?", she asked pleasantly.
Zoe shook her head when the woman asked if she still put meat in. ”I still do the layers of cheese,” Zoe explained. ”Adding cheddar to the ricotta, but do layers of veggies instead of the meat. Broccoli, corn, carrots, beans, pretty much whatever you want to add. Though I normally do a cream sauce instead of tomato.”
Unfortunately, Zoe knew that at this time of year, she was going to have to use some frozen ingredients but it was better to do that than not be able to cook what she wanted.
But then the woman apologized for not introducing herself, and Zoe laughed slightly. ”I think the talk of food is just that distracting,” Zoe said. At least to her it was. ”I'm Zoe.”

Emma nodded her head as Zoe descibed to her the means of making her veggie lasagna. She definitely like the sound of the corn, carrots, and beans together, but maybe she could add in some spinach and mushrooms too to make up for the lack of meat. But she really wanted to keep the tomatoes for the sauce. This would surprise the crap out of her mom. She knew how to cook, but didn't do it often because her Mom did it most of the time.
Emma really enjoyed talking to Zoe about food so much that she almost hated taking advatage of her and whatever she had, but someone had to be the guinea pig. And she just happened to be the lucky one that made her hand tingle.
Now to find out a bit more about this new acquaintance of hers. "Yeah, I think food talk does that. Especially if you're someone who loves to cook or eat.", she said with a grin. "I am really enjoying your ideas on food dishes to make and talking with you. Do you cook for a living or is it just something you really love to do? And is there someway I can find you again so I can pick your brain about more food ideas? Ya know if I'm out and about in the city and needed to talk to you? If you don't mind me asking, that is. I just really haven't made a lot of friends yet with me being still kinda new around here."
Emma hoped she would take the bait and kinda open up to her. She needed just a bit more information to maybe find her again if she needed to or to maybe find out the things she's into. Emma also picked up a few carrots, some spinach, and also some mushrooms. She placed each item in her bag and placed her bag in the crook of her arm. It was starting to feel just a little heavy, but she knew that she really needed to stock up on some things for the fridge. She also knew that she would be stopping by somewhere else to get the cheeses and beans. But maybe she could tag along with Zoe to continue this conversation and learn more if she would also be going to get similar ingredients for her dish as well.
If she wasn't so hellbent on trying to work on her new skill and figuring it out, she would actually like to get to know Zoe. She was being nice to her when most people probably would not have given her the time of day or gave her a weird look as if to say, Why are you talking to me? But Emma knew that she needed to keep her distance from people and actually letting herself open up to someone until she knew what was going on with this skill and how it would affect her or others and how to control it.
Did she cook for a living? Zoe shook her head. ”Oh god no. I just like trying new foods,” Zoe replied. ”But constantly trying new things can get expensive if you’re eating out all the time, especially in this city, so I started cooking.”
But then Emma was asking if there was a way that she could contact her if she needed to talk about food ideas again. Zoe turned to look at Emma carefully. They had had a pretty good talk so far, if it had been fairly short. But did that mean that Zoe wanted to give out her phone number to this woman?
Though, the fact was that she had brought Jay back to her apartment after they had first met. Giving her number out wouldn’t be that big of deal, not in comparison.
”Sure, we could always exchange numbers,” Zoe said with a nod. ”I’ve never found a tomato sauce I love, maybe another day you’d be willing to share that recipe.”

Emma laughed at Zoe's reaction upon being asked if she was professional cook. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to laugh, but your reaction was kind of funny. I guess it would be difficult to always cook for someone else the way they want and not how you'd like to. And I totally agree with it being expensive. I remember not too long ago when we were still trying to unpack and get things organized in the new apartment and we ate out for almost a week and it got kind of ridiculous."
Zoe turned and looked at her, like she was trying to study what kind of person she was. Emma smiled at her, frozen just a little on the inside. She wondered if Zoe was starting to regret putting some trust into Emma. She started to wonder if she had over stepped her boundaries when asking about contacting her later.
Zoe finally consented to exchanging numbers and Emma was relieved. She put set her bag of groceries down and pulled her phone out, getting Zoe's number and telling Zoe hers. It wasn't exactly what she was after, but it was a start. "So if you don't cook for a living, what kind of job do you do? And yes, totally. I'll have to give you my Mom's recipe for you to try. It's super simple. Or maybe you could come over and have some one night. Or I could come and hang out with you and I could bring a dish to help some with dinner. If any of that sounds like something you'd like to do anyway."
Emma started to also think about things she used to do in Washington before she had to leave spur of the moment, but people didn't need to know that she had somehow turned her cheating, no good father into a cat. She could leave that part out. Maybe there would be someone around that she could talk to about a gym to work out at. It had been ages since she had been in her kickboxing class and she needed to knock some rust off. She had still worked on her yoga while she and her Mom were traveling, but gyms were kinda hit and miss on the equipment she needed to train.
She could worry about that later though. She was still working on this relationship with Zoe and she needed to hold this conversation out for a little while and learn about who Zoe was (other than she's a nice lady who likes to cook).
Zoe waved off Emma’s apology, in hindsight her reaction had been a little over the top. ”Plus, it gets a little old always going to restaurants by yourself,” Zoe explained. At least the other woman had her mother here that she could go out with.
And then once Zoe said that they could exchange numbers if she had other questions, Emma was pulling out her phone. So Zoe gave her digits, and then pulled her own out to get Emma’s. Followed by the best bit of news: Emma had no problem with giving over her mother’s tomato sauce recipe. Zoe grinned at the other woman, happy with how things had turned out. Zoe knew that some families could be a little funny about those kind of things, wanting to keep special recipes like that secret for whatever reason. Zoe didn't understand that, food was meant to be shared, and while that normally meant that you would share it with people in person, it shouldn’t mean keeping it hostage so the only way a person could eat a certain thing was to go to your house, whether they wanted to or not.
”I’m sure we can figure something out,” Zoe said, still smiling at the other woman. ”Hopefully soon, I really do need a good tomato sauce recipe.”
But what did she do for a living? Well, it was a fair question, since she was so interested in cooking, but that wasn’t what paid the bills. ”I work at the zoo,” Zoe said simply. This was a food conversation, after all, not an animal one. ”What about you?”

Emma nodded and agreed, "We should totally get together soon. I just know my Mom would love to have you over for dinner. Though I will get that recipe to you very soon."
Emma was glad Zoe was opening up to her. "Wow, working at a zoo would be so cool. I love animals. There are times where I wish I could be an animal and just go run free or could talk with them. It would be so cool to know what they say to one another or just what they think about. I think about that kinda often.", Emma said excitedly and then paused. "Do you think I'm weird for thinking about things like that? Maybe I am a little weird." Emma kinda dropped her head a little, acting as if she were a little vulnerable. She hoped that Zoe would take that moment to share more and try to make Emma feel reassured. Emma kinda fidgeted with her hands to really try and sell it.
Emma looked up slowly upon being asked about her job. "Oh, my job? Nothing as cool as working with animals. I used to work in a real estate office before I moved here, but haven't found an office around here that's got an opening just yet. I'm still checking around though. If not, then maybe I'll find something that will utilize my Business and Marketing Degree. And if that doesn't work, then I'll try and go back to school. I'll find something. I did pretty much all the work and never got any credit for it at my old office. I worked the desk and scheduled open houses and appointments. I showed houses and filed paperwork. I even matched client preferences with house features. The people loved me and I sold lots of houses, but my boss always claimed that it was because of his name and effort."
Emma suddenly placed her hand over her mouth. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to rant on like that."
Zoe smiled when Emma said that her mother would like it if she came over for dinner. For a completely random encounter, this had the potential of turning out rather well. If Emma really was as nice as she seemed to be, well there was really no reason for the woman to find out about her ability to talk to animals; maybe she could actually make a real friend here. A friend who might be able to give her a good tomato sauce recipe at that.
But then Emma went on to say that she thought about what animals thought, and Zoe tilted her head slightly as she looked at the other woman. ”I’d imagine it’s mostly about food,” Zoe said after a moment. ”But I don’t think that makes you weird. Lots of people wonder that. That’s why there’s been scientists who’ve tried to decipher what dolphins and apes say.”
Then Emma explained what she had done before coming to New York, and Zoe nodded. Surely with that kind of background, Emma would be able to find something fairly easily, even if it was doing something new. ”Nah, it’s ok,” Zoe said. ”But, I should probably be heading to the store to get the cheese for my lasagna. Were you still thinking of making it, too?”

Emma smiled at Zoe and nodded when she said she wasn't weird, but the way Zoe tilted her head was telling Emma that she was hiding something. Emma was running out of ways to get Zoe to crack, but figured that maybe it would take longer than just a short conversation and a pretty smile and demeanor to get her to open up the way Emma wanted her too.
"I guess I'll just have to figure out what I got from her another way", Emma thought to herself. She just had to figure out how she made it pass on to someone else. Or at least that's what she thought she did. Zoe then asked about getting the cheese and if she was still making the lasagna. Emma nodded her head in agreement and asked Zoe, "So where are you going for the cheese? Is there a better market around here for that or does this place have it to?"
Emma was thinking about letting herself get close to people. She could have friends right? Most people sucked, but there could be few people that she could be close to. Emma just didn't know if she could let herself be open like that to someone, as a friend or romantically. Maybe she could have before she acquired this skill of hers, but now she wasn't so sure. Who could she trust to tell or would it just be better to use it for herself and not let anyone know it was her. How would she handle trying to keep this double life she was trying to lead separated? Maybe Emma could wing it. But she really did wanna get back into kickboxing before she got too rusty.
So Emma had decided to go with the veggie lasagna she had suggested. ”No, not here,” Zoe said, moving over to pay for the vegetables she had chosen. ”I normally just grab the cheese from the grocery store near my apartment.”
Looking over her shoulder at Emma as she paid, Zoe continued speaking. ”Did you want to come with me, or were you just going to head home?”

Emma stood behind Zoe in line waiting to pay for her produce as well. Zoe had asked her if she wanted to come with her. That was really very nice of her so Emma decided she would tag along.
Emma nodded her head about getting cheese from a grocery store and answered Zoe saying, "Sure, I can tag along to the store for cheese with you. But afterwards, I have try and go back home."
Emma paid for her produce and placed the bags back into the crook of her elbow to carry them easier. "I have to get that recipe for you as well when I get home. Are you going to be at work later on today? Or should I just call you and we find somewhere to meet?" Emma asked as she started to follow Zoe out of the market area.
