The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Becca looked back on impulse when Raine pointed out her freckles. Really, no one’s freckles were quite as prominent as Becca’s, but Raine’s went well with her blonde hair and complexion. ”Wicked, sae we can jist make th’ video together fer tois examples: yer pretty, subtle freckles an’ mah freckly mess,” she teased, though she quickly realized the idea was not without merit and ammended the mental note she previously tucked away.
The two women got to Becca’s door while Raine gave Becca the rundown on her study and work situations. Becca manipulated magnetic fields to nudge her keys out of her purse in lieu of digging through the space. She unlocked the door and led the way into the apartment. They entered into the open living room, complete with comfy couches and television. To the left of the door was a little dining area and past a half-wall, the kitchen could be seen as well.
Raine’s academics were sadly put on hold when she was pulled through the rip. Becca tried to hide the furrowing of her brow when she mentioned a friend who went off and had not come back. She could supposedly handle herself, but Becca knew all too well how dangerous things were these days, particularly close to the rip.
The look of concern melted away when Raine hastily defended her recent job history and Becca snorted at the earnestness. ”Aye, Ah believe ye, thocht Ah pramise Ah wouldnae judge.” Becca was pretty sex positive as she entered her mid-twenties officially, and she was not the type to shame sex workers.
Becca moved to the kitchen to grab a bag of ground coffee. ”Ah’m sure yer friend is okay… bit in th’ meantime, Ah coods always gae get whit ye need frae yer side. Maybe e’en let Impact know yer okay. Ye know her.” Despite her tough outer exterior, Rebecca’s doppelganger cared a lot about her team, so she was sure the leader was worrying. ”Ah think saim ay th’ unis in th’ area ur finally working it saim kind ay transfer program, credits an’ aw, sae maybe ye were lucky tae avoid th’ cluster as they figured aw that it.”
From the moment they entered the apartment, there was a pleasant scent Rebecca was trying to place. Once she looked around the kitchen, she noticed the culprit under a little glass dome. ”Oh, richt. Ah baked today.” Becca had spent time thinking about her “developing love life,” and when Becca was overthinking, she usually spent that time baking. ”Ah made double-chocolate chip cookies. Hey Raine? Hoo dae ye feel abit chocolate?”
Raine? On ViewTube? Well, it wasn't Broadway, but it was a stage. Rebecca may not have noticed the stars in her eyes, but Raine hadn't ever considered ViewTube as a steppingstone to stardom. Hadn't Justin Beaver done that? It might even be a classier way to get discovered as opposed to reality shows.
"I know she's okay. And I trust she has her reasons." Raine affirmed with all the belief of her heart. Rianne was a cop. If she hadn't come back, it was the best choice for the both of them.
Becca on the other hand... Raine didn't want to endanger her. "I'd love to tell Impact somehow, but my stuff and, even my ID. It just isn't worth the risk. The day the rip happened... there's some bad people on the other side. And I don't want them to know I made it." Was she willing to start fresh, though? Not just a new world, but as a new person? A new college career? New everything?
Her mind was chasing down new avenues of thought rather than really taking in her surroundings so Becca wasn't the only one surprised to find baked goods in arm's reach.
How did she feel about chocolate?
"Chocolate is the culmination of all that is good and kind and wonderful in this world." She did not miss a beat. That answer was automatic as if it'd been already barreled and waiting in the chamber, ready to go.
"Dark chocolate, though... dark chocolate is the key to my heart. Becca, is this dark chocolate? Will you marry me?" There was not a doubt in her mind that by asking this woman for a hug, she had made the BEST decision of her life. Raine still had that shivery, tight ball of stress in her chest, but little by little she felt that tension relaxing.

Becca was glad Raine had faith her friend was okay. She would put on a strong smile in return, even if her mind was plagued with the stories of people crossing the rift and not returning. Becca had no clue who Raine's friend was, so hopefully, she was right and the mystery person had their reasons.
The focus should instead return to Raine, who was worried about letting Becca bring word back to Impact. It went further than that, in fact; she was worried word about her survival might make it back to the wrong people. Becca knew all too well who the wrong people were.
She held her tongue for the moment, as chocolate took priority. Raine offered the perfect answer, putting a wide smile on the Scot's face. "It is dark chocolate, bit maybe take me tae dinner first 'afore ye gae ring shopping." Not that the blonde wasn't cute. In fact, she was very cute. But with both Maya and Agnes on her plate, there were greater priorities in Becca's life than flirting with her new friend.
Becca approached her friend, holding out a small plate of cookies and taking one for herself. She took a bite, savoring the bold dark chocolate chunks in the sweet chocolate cookie. Once the bite was chewed and swallowed, she finally broached the topic she was hanging onto. "Raine. Ah'm an X-Man, sae Ah'm gonna be crossing the rift. That's my choice. Bit... if ye dinnae want me tellin' Impact yer here, ur if ye worry SUPER micht catch wind, then... yer secrets safe wi' me. Promise." It would suck keeping things from Impact, but she trusted Raine knew what she was doing.
Raine chuckled through her cookie at the thought of at least taking Rebecca to dinner first. (Yes. The cookie was already half gone.) She wasn't opposed, but Raine couldn't even afford the good canned soup right now. The thought of a date was absolutely cringe-worthy. Not because it was Becca, an almost stranger. It felt like they'd moved right on past the awkward phase and straight into actual friendship. Nah. A date would have been awkward for almost every other reason in the world.
> "Raine. Ah'm an X-Man, sae Ah'm gonna be crossing the rift..."
Oh. So she could sound like Impact when she wanted to...
"I know." The blonde picked a chocolate morsel out of the cookie. Maybe she was being a baby about this. Or overly cautious. "Do you think... it might be safe to go across if I went with the X-men? Wear a domino mask? Cloak and dagger and all that? I don't want to endanger people or put them in the spot where they know things they shouldn't, but people like Impact... she's already got all the secrets we don't want them to have."
And her dad would be so worried. Could she at least say goodbye?
But she'd seen Trace's powers and the guy who'd tracked him. Sure, there was some mutual stabbing involved but Trace was ambulatory now. So that meant the tracker probably was too. Trace was free now because he was here. Raine just didn't have enough information to make an informed decision on whether she needed to stay or not.

It was nice. Maybe it was the knowledge that she was an X-Man or maybe it was just Raine’s sunny personality, but Becca felt at ease with Raine. Standing there laughing and eating cookies together, Becca knew she was spending her time with a friend.
As with any friend Becca was going to look out for Raine. She wanted Raine to touch base with her life on the other side if it could happen. Raine made a great point; Impact was not someone she had to exactly protect. Becca chuckled and nodded. “Aye, Impact woods gie ye a stern word if she knew ye werenae coming tae her fer her benefit.”
Becca brushed cookie crumbs off her hands, thinking of the logistics. ”We’ll bring ye o’er as discreet as possible.” There was the possibility of having Mirror ferry Raine over through the mirror world, avoiding government checkpoints. She would have to touch base with him-and-or-her soon. ”An’ dinnae worry, if ye didnae bring yer domino mask, Ah’ve got a few tae spare,” she added, trying to lighten the mood.
Placing a now-crumbless hand on Raine’s shoulder, Becca offered a warm smile. ”Yer my friend noo. Tha means lookin’ it fer each aither. Which reminds me; where th’ hell hae ye been livin oan thes side, Raine?”
> “Aye, Impact woods gie ye a stern word if she knew ..."
"But can't you see that's exactly why she deserves a break from the responsibility?" Maybe not since they were kind of the same person... "I'm probably overthinking it. I get all tangled up in my own head sometimes and I feel paralyzed for making choices. I need to just... do it. Or do something." She might be waiting forever for her friend, that's why they'd decided that after two weeks, Raine should go on with her life.
Except she hadn't.
> ”We’ll bring ye o’er as discreet as possible.”
That would minimize the risk to everyone, assuming that the reason why Rianne hadn't returned was personal to her and not related to why Raine had been getting arrested when the universe decided to get split open like an egg.
"D'you have a domino mask in black? Black's totally in my wheelhouse." She didn't expect to miss the X-men routine, but... she kinda did. Maybe it would be worth looking into the team here if she stayed.
Worst of all, her cookie was gone. Raine was left wholly unsatisfied because she didn't even remember the last bite. That was supposed to be savored not sucked straight past the taste buds. That's why she was surprised at her hands. Not because Becca was asking a potentially embarrassing question.
"When my friend was here to help out, we had a fleabag motel room in a good location to watch the rift. Once she was gone, I wasn't making nearly enough money to sustain that so I went to the homeless mutant shelter. The one with the golden doors." Which, they'd called for all displaced citizens to report in and get transferred back to their origin universe. Raine felt she was justified in going against that directive.
"It's not my favorite, but at least it's free...? I'm trying to save up, but--" Oh. Right. Today wages had gone to the pile of a human she'd left behind earlier today. Raine mustered a smile anyway. "It's really freaking expensive to live here, y'know?"

Becca could relate to Raine’s frustration. Inaction was such an easier choice when the other option was to make a definitive, consequence-laden decision. ”Most ay mine ur green, bit Ah’ll see whit Ah can dae,” she joked. ” An’ Impact’d ne’er shy away frae responsibility, an’ Ah’m nae abit tae tell her tay. She kinda scares me.” That was doubly true now that—
Oh frick, right! Becca had some big news in her pocket to sway Raine! How could she have forgotten? They’d first focus on squaring away Raine’s living situation. ”Yer at Sanctuary. Ah know it. They’re well-meaning, bit it’s definitely nae ideal. Hmm…”
Becca grabbed one more cookie from the nearby tray and looked down at it, as if she was contemplating the merits and values of the treat. ”Sae Ah know this may soond a wee bit sudden ur maybe e’en crazy, bit if ye hear me it, Ah’m willing tae sweeten th’ pot wi’ anaither cookie. Sae… yeah.”
And now for Becca to be forward to a woman who was a total stranger but felt like a friend. ”Sae Juliette an’ Ah hae tae renew our lease soon, an’ we’ve been makin’ saim considerations. See, thes apartment buildin’ has bigger places up near th’ top. Mair rooms, mair space, an’ th’ like. Ah was wonderin… if maybe ye’d want a room wi’ us?”
She’d have to run the idea past Juliette, but she could get her to agree; she knew it. Raine was in a bind, and they could do something to help. ”Ance ye gie oan yer feet, ye can help wi’ rent, bit Ah want ye oan yer feet first.”
Rebecca held out the cookie, but her attention was drawn toward the floor where she saw her Bengal kitten, Gavin, walking between Raine’s ankles. She smiled. ”Gavin’s aways up fer mair roommates, sae whit dae ye say?”
You know, it was funny. She choked on absolutely nothing at all, abandoning all cookie tracking and searching out the truth from Becca’s multi-colored eyes.
”Bigger place means bigger rent.” And who was Juliette? But Becca had considered the rent thing and was ready to quash her protests before she’d really gotten started.
”It’s not fair to you guys.” Who’s team was she on!? The cookie was extended toward Raine. A perfect confection tempting her to betray her moral high ground. But it sounded like it’d be too good to be true. But Rebecca was an X-man. THE X-man where Raine was concerned.
”If… if you’re moving anyway. I- Don’t- Oh god. Just give me the cookie. I can’t say no to this even if it’s too good to be true” She would be finding a way to contribute ASAP. Sooner than as soon as possible. STASAP.
And her decision was immediately blessed by Bijou’s twin. It had to be related to Bijou if it was Impact’s cat, right? Raine froze so that her bony ankles would be the best rubbing posts possible. She would not forsake her furry blessings.
”You don’t have a daughter… with wings… right?” Maybe that was Juliette....

Maybe it was unfair. Becca and Raine had bonded over the sisterhood of chocolate, and Becca was already using that fact to her advantage, playing on the girl's very valid weaknesses. Still, it was a cheap tactic for a good, because Raine seemed like a genuine, nice person, and she did not want to leave her alone at Sanctuary, no matter how much the golden arch had done to improve its image. Maybe Rebecca was opening herself up to a spy or SUPER, but she wanted to trust her instincts.
The offer caught Raine off guard, which was a fair response. It was a big offer to a recent stranger. The reaction almost made Becca giggle, but she wanted to meet Raine's curious gaze with sincere eyes. Of course, she kept the cookie wafting in the younger woman's direction.
Raine was trying to convince herself to say no, but the offers were too tempting: an apartment AND a cookie? Rebecca would have been a goner, too.
Gavin responded to Raine's still ankle by circling around it, brushing the side of his head against her. The topic of a daughter came up, and Becca snorted. "Nae. Nae daughter, an' Mirror an' Ah arenae married." Sleeping together, sure, but not married with a kid. "Juliette's mah ruimmate. She's a nurse oan both sides, bit th' ain here's nicer, Ah promise." Becca was pretty sure when she met the other Juliette, her response was a grumbled, "There's two of them, ****ing great."
Becca grabbed a cookie for herself and muched it in victory. "We'll aw talk abit it t'night. We've git a little tradition fer big conversations Ah'm sure ye'll loch. Bit til then, Ah say we check it masks an' costumes." Between her own superheroing and her cosplay habit, she had a decent selection. Of course, the harness would stay safely tucked away in the back of the closet; not quite the thing to spring on a new friend.
Juliette? The grumpy nurse Juliette? Raine supposed that name sounded right, but she'd pretty much never called the woman anything besides Ms. Reyes for fear of the grumperina.
It was a lot to take in, finding all the dopplegangers all in one place. Almost like she'd run into a whole nest of people whose fates were intertwined no matter what side of the universe they came from.
"Are you and Juliette...?" She'd suspected there were some wild college days that made up the history of whatever the nurse and the x-leader had between them. Raine hadn't really understood it back on her side, but she sure as heck didn't want to interrupt it if that was the phase that these girls were in.
And there was no Mirage marriage. That was good in its own way. No trapped tragedy... yet.
Raine realized that Becca had pressed the cookie into her hands. She'd somehow sort of agreed, maybe. And she had so, so many questions.
"Costumes sounds good." Fabulous, actually. That was something productive. And it wasn't like Raine had much of anything to go back to the Sanctuary for...

Rebecca understood how Raine must have been feeling meeting doppelgangers from the other side; when the Rip opened up, she was faced with her own double, one friend as a spouse, and another friend as a stern nurse who denied being friends with Impact, (even if she clearly was.) The uncanny nature of it all was hard to process.
It seemed, however, Raine was curious about the Becca and Jules on the MROverse side of things, prompting a wide-eyed look from Becca. “What? Oh! Oh, nae. Nae nae. Jules and Ah are jist friends. She’s wonderful—an’ yeah, she’s gorgeous, an’ dornt gie me wrang, Ah loch girls,” which she had no clue why she felt the need to point out, ”but we're jist friends. Ah’m mostly single these days, honestly.” If one set aside her domme ex-girlfriend or her gender-swapping friend-with-benefits.
They had a lot to sort out if they really wanted to make Raine the third roommate of the highrise New York apartment, and they could do that while they reveled in a little superhero fashion. ”Guid! Who disnae loch a wee bit ay dress-up?” Becca was getting giddy at the prospect and offered to take Raine’s hand to lead the way through the apartment. ”An’ after ‘at, Ah coods use yer help. Our tradition micht call for a bit ay baking ‘afore Jules gets haim.” After all, they could not have a Midnight Chocolate without the titular attraction.
There was something about that rebuttal from Becca that only fanned Raine's Reyes/Grey headcannon. Was that a 'doth protest too much'? If this whole bizarro friendship thing panned out and Becca was to be believed, someday Raine would get to see for herself. Maybe even tonight.
And Becca liked girls? That surprised exactly no one considering Impact was 50/50 on the matter. "I like cookies. I guess that makes me a cookiesexual." Oh god. That was terrible, but she was already laughing at the stupidity of it. "Okayokay. I take that back. Cookies don't turn me on." Domino masks might just be another story, though...
> ”Guid! Who disnae loch a wee bit ay dress-up?”
"Yes!" Raine effused. Becca's accent didn't even trip her up anymore. She slapped her hand into her teammate's without a moment of hesitation. "Yes please. Do you go on patrols here? I Haven't done anything even a little remotely x-related, but people seem way more chill about powers here. Some of the X's don't even have masks."
> "...Our tradition micht call for a bit ay baking ‘afore Jules gets haim.”
"Baking? Oh no. You do not want to trust me in the kitchen. Things get on fire. Pies turn to soup. Spaghetti...? Yeah. One time I tried to cook spaghetti. Let's just say I cannot be trusted alone in the kitchen if you want your safety deposit back."
