The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

In character with everything he expected from her, Svetlana did not mince words when reminding Nate that he was, in fact, an idiot. The ex-thief was not going to argue when she only spoke the truth. Despite all his actual knowledge and intelligence, Nate displayed a miraculous lack of foresight when it came to Natalie. The illusionist was like Nate’s blind spot, and it was getting to be a problem.
As either a concerned friend or a curious witness, Svetlana wanted to know more. ”We’ve been sleeping together, yeah. Since… May? June? Something like that. And Norah obviously doesn’t know. What kind of kid knows about the sex lives of her parents?”
There was a pause, before Nate remembered Norah’s question that threw everything out of whack. She asked if Nate was friends with Miss Quin like he was with her mommy, which meant their daughter was not totally unaware of something between them. ”Okay. She might know mommy and daddy have some kind of special friendship,” he admitted, resigning himself to more guilt than before.
”We’re not sleeping together now. It’s been almost a week, and she’s still too heated to look at me, so… I guess that’s that?” Nate did not sound convinced. As bad as things seemed between himself and Natalie, he could not shake the belief that things were not yet resolved between them. He just could not tell if that was a good thing or if there was more bad in store for them.
>>”We’ve been sleeping together, yeah. Since… May? June? Something like that. And Norah obviously doesn’t know. What kind of kid knows about the sex lives of her parents?”
Sveta allowed a pause, aching her eyebrow as she looked at Nate. She would just wait until he realized the error in his own question. He was a lovely guy, but not exactly a master planner, and kids very very, very perceptive. Even if it did not come to the dirty details, Norah was probably very much aware that there was something going on between mommy and daddy. So, Sveta just gave Nate a look, and waited for him to walk back on his own words like an adult.
>>”Okay. She might know mommy and daddy have some kind of special friendship,”
Svtea chuckled and nodded. There it was. Poor kid, it could not be an easy situation to be in. Especially since the so-called adults did not know what they were doing either.
>>”We’re not sleeping together now. It’s been almost a week, and she’s still too heated to look at me, so… I guess that’s that?”
Sveta sighed.
"Again, I'm the worst possible person to ask. If I ever give out actual advice on what you should you, just ignore it..."

It was a point of pride that Norah was exceptionally clever for her age, but a smart kid was a double-edged sword. The child was unaware of how adult relationships functioned, but she was observant enough to draw similarities between how Nate interacted with Quin and how he interacted with Natalie.
It brought up a good point Nate was avoiding: the longer he continued things like he had, the more Norah was going to learn from her parents’ actions. While Nate believed he would love and support Norah regardless of how she developed relationships later in life, he should not be setting an example of casually getting involved with multiple people, particularly when it clearly ended up hurting Natalie.
He ended up hurting Natalie, which was a sobering realization. She was angry, but her eyes made it clear she was banishing him from a place of hurt. It inspired feelings of guilt and regret and Nate was going to have to come to terms with exactly what he was regretting.
In the meantime, he returned his attention to Svetlana, who was discrediting herself. ”Hey, mutant dating ain’t an exact science, and you haven’t exactly lived the most stable, settled-in life. I’m sure at some point the stars will align and you’ll find the adapted, human, or relatively non-catastrophic mutant of your dreams,” he teased.
Glancing around, Nate was surprised with how far they had walked over such a seemingly short time. Conversation had a way of letting time escape him, and Svetlana was good for a conversation. They had made it to an area slightly more populated by small families and couples on benches and blankets. Two children were playing near their relaxing parents, each with an ice cream cone in hand. Sure enough, Nate noticed an vendor with an ice cream cart up along the path. ”You hungry? My treat; I was the one to drag you out, after all.”

"That was a very legally correct way of putting it" Sveta grinned at the carefully worded definition of her potential future love life. She really wanted to believe that something like that was possible. She had successfully dated before without destroying a city, so... everything was possible. Just not right about now. "For now, I'm good, really. But I'll take that into consideration in the future."
She definitely needed to get her own life in order before she went looking for romance.
>>”You hungry? My treat; I was the one to drag you out, after all.”
Sveta glanced at the ice cream cart. It seemed to be a running trend with her and Nate.
"Sure, why not?"

Nate was offering his support, but he agreed with Svetlana’s priorities. Love and relationships were all well and good, but they were best when they fit into a life that was doing well on its own. After what she went through, Svetlana was still regaining normalcy in her life bit by bit. The park was a good first step and her desire to take a bigger role in Haven showed promise for the future, but she was still piecing her life back together. ”I look forward to more exciting gossip on your end when that day comes,” he teased.
The pair of Havenites approached the ice cream vendor and Nate considered his options. After giving it some thought, he settled on Neapolitan on a waffle cone. The easiest way not to make a choice was to select three flavors in one, after all.
Waiting on Svetlana to make her choice, Nate watched intently, oblivious to the teenager running up behind the Russian, lined up to unintentionally bump into her along the way.
>> ”I look forward to more exciting gossip on your end when that day comes,”
"Yeah, sure. I'll call you after the first date and tell you all the details." Sveta chuckled. She made Nate sound like a girl friend she was besties with, or at least she thought she did. She never had one of those before. And she was definitely not tell Nate all the details of a potential first date. Unless it ended up being a criminal case or something. That would be awkward...
Sveta was jolted out of her thoughts as she waited for the three scoops of chocolate ice cream (no shame there) be someone that bumped into her from behind. The blonde winced, whipping around and backing away from the person, almost bumping into the ice cream cart in her hurry to get away from the physical contact.
"Hey!"

It was nice feeling like Nate might have an actual friend. Never in his life had he been in the habit of forming those kinds of bonds, but his own life was reaching a point of stability unlike any he had experienced before. He had Noel, who was the only person he could consider his “best friend,” he had Devon, who he had grown to trust, and he had Quin, who was an important friend regardless of their history. Even some of his colleagues at the Mansion were cresting past the point of mere acquaintances. If he could add Svetlana to his short list, that would be all the better.
The man behind the cart was placing chocolate ice cream in a precariously tall stack atop a cone when someone passed behind Svetlana, bumping her. It was a jolt of surprise, and the last thing Nate wanted was to see something surprising around Svetlana, who was jumpy enough as it was. She lightly nudged the cart, and the ice cream looked like it would almost wobble off its perch before settling.
They both turned to the teenage boy, but Svetlana was the one to shout, catching his attention. The boy should have been more careful, but he turned to face them, startled by the woman he upset. It was probably going to amount to nothing, but Nate wanted to diffuse things before they might start. ”Hey kid, you’ve gotta watch where you're going.”
Looking down at his feet, embarrassed, the boy muttered, “Sorry, Ma’am.”
”He’s sorry,” Nate repeated. He added the fact that the kid was clearly not a SUPER agent in his thoughts, but kept that to himself. ”Just an accident. What do you say, Sveta? Let the kid off with a warning?”
There was a shot of adrenaline in her system, and for a moment Sveta could clearly imagine that this was how people felt when she touched them. It was panic mixed with confusion, and she almost made an even bigger mess out of it by backing into the ice cream cart. Thoughts raced around in her head: Was someone attacking her? Were they trying to start a fight? Were they SUPER? Did they have powers? Was it totally an accident that was now going to get out of hand because she accidentally boosted someone?...
>>”Hey kid, you’ve gotta watch where you're going.”
>>“Sorry, Ma’am.”
It was a kid. It was just a kid. No one was blowing up. Nate had stepped in, and Sveta drew a deep, shaky breath, trying to regain some of her lost dignity. People stared.
>>”He’s sorry. Just an accident. What do you say, Sveta? Let the kid off with a warning?”
"Sure." Sveta nodded, pushing herself away from the cart. She really wanted to get away from the people. So much so that she even forgot her ice cream.

The volume with which Sveta called out the kid was loud enough to garner looks from nearby parkgoers. Nate did not want his friend dealing with attention from all nearby eyes, because she had enough reasons to worry about being watched. As accidental as the contact was, the kid clearly rattled her, reminding her of how quickly someone could sneak up on her and take her back to SUPER.
With the situation deescalating, Svetlana granted forgiveness to the kid, but it was more a consequence of her desire to distance herself from the ice cream stand, the kind, and people in general. She made a hasty exit, and Nate quickly grabbed her finished ice cream cone, dropping enough money to cover the treats and tip, before following her.
”Hey, I’m behind you,” he warned, making sure he did not unintentionally sneak up on her after everything that just happened. Nate was able to fall in step with Svetlana, who was walking with purpose. ”Come on, it was just one setback. This was gonna be a process; we knew that. But you survived. Hell, you got ice cream out of it,” he reminded her, trying to add some levity and holding out the chocolate treat as an offering.
Sveta sighed as Nate caught up. She felt anxious, and rattled, and ashamed of how she overreacted to the whole thing. She was a little angry at Nate for making her come out, and angry at herself for being angry at Nate. At least he had the good sense to let her know he was behind her. She had had enough jump scares for one day.
>>”Come on, it was just one setback. This was gonna be a process; we knew that. But you survived. Hell, you got ice cream out of it,”
"Survival is not the point" Sveta mumbled, but she did take the ice cream. "That kid could have been a mutant. And I should have been more alert."

As expected, Svetlana was already beating herself up. It was a setback Nate wanted to avoid, because it took enough time to get the ex-captive out of her apartment. After almost losing her cool on a child, it was not unreasonable to think he would be waiting to see her poking her head out of the apartment door sometime around Groundhog’s Day.
Svetlana did have a point: while the kid’s intrusion was unexpected, she needed to be aware of her surroundings at all times. It was just a truth for someone with a power like hers. ”Probably. You’re not used to being around people. Consider this you shaking off the rust.”
Nate took a lick from his own cone before adding, ”It’ll be easier to get the hang of being out in public the more you do it. Just, you know, try to keep aggressively confronting teenagers to a minimum.”
