The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Maya all but dragged Becca way from the dorm, and straight to the kitchen. If there had ever been a time when they both needed to drink something strong, this was definitely it. She had stated as much right after they deposited their tragically married alternate universe... persons in an empty room, and left them to their own devices.
"Stay here" Maya told Becca as they made their way into the kitchen, stepping through the reflecting countertop. A few moments later she returned with a generous portion of Sam's secret alcohol stash (Sam was out of town, so it was free for all, or he could complain when he came back). There were all kinds of liquor in the bottles she could hold, and she set them down on the counter, pulling out two glasses before she finally glanced at Becca.

Becca’s legs were moving on autopilot as her head tried to settle. Luckily, Maya was there to quite literally drag her around, giving her legs direction. The image of Rebecca and Jesse wrapping their arms around one another was still in her mind. Even if Jesse and Gawain’s faces were different, it was hard not to accept what she was seeing in front of her.
By the time Becca regained cognizance and realized where she was, Maya had led her into the kitchen. She was told to wait as Maya dipped into a countertop. ”Whit was Ah gonnae dae, follaw ‘er?” she muttered to herself as she waited for her friend to return.
Maya’s return came with an armful of liquor, proving the woman understood the appropriate amount of alcohol to have on hand when dealing with such a revelation. (The answer was “All,” by the way. All the alcohol.) Two glasses hit the counter with a clink and Maya voiced the thought they were clearly both stuck on.
Rebecca sighed, because it was still hard to process. ”Aye. There’s a universe it there where we’re married.” She pointed to a bottle of amber liquor. Spiced rum if she had to guess, but she was not picky. ”Pour an’ ne’er stop pouring.”
With a drink in hand, Rebecca took a sip and allowed the drink to burn as it traveled down her throat. She needed the spicy, sweet taste to bring her back to reality. A reality where she suddenly could not look one of her best friends in the eye. ”Ah mean, it disnae change anything,” she thought, at least, ”Bit… Ah dinnae. It’s weird tae think abit, richt?” They had hooked up once, but Rebecca never considered dating Maya (and, of course, Gawain.) They dismissed the idea because…
>>”Aye. There’s a universe it there where we’re married. Pour an’ ne’er stop pouring.”
Maya did. She poured a full glass for Becca, no ice and no bulls**t, and then another one for herself. Might as well get wasted while they were at it. Maybe it would take the imminent shock of seeing... themselves, in love, married, out of their system. Maybe. Maya sat down, sipping her own drink. It burned, but that was kind of to be expected.
"Weiirrrrrrd" Maya agreed with a chuckle "I mean... they seem good together." she blinked "Not that I'm suggestin' anything. But, um... good for them?" Good indeed. "Except for the stuck in the mirrors part. Man, that sucks."

Maya had many redeeming qualities. At the moment, Rebecca was content with admiring her ability to fill a glass of liquor. It was the logical choice. If they just kept drinking, maybe things would seem normal.
She willingly ignored what happened the last time they got properly drunk together. Rebecca had Agnes again, even if no one but Jules, Nate, and Devon knew it. Even drunk, she knew where the line was; there would be no repeats of Budapest.
”Thay dae seem guid together, reit? Rebecca… that Rebecca really loves Jesse. Ye can jist teel.” The way she acted when she asked for help and the look in her eyes when she realized she could be with Jesse again were telling. Reuniting with her true love was the only thing she cared about; it was everything to her. ”Ah’m still sad we couldnae get Jesse it… but at leest we coods gie them thes.”
They had their day to be with one another. Time to share all the touches and kisses they missed over two years. An opportunity to…
Well, kisses were not the only things they missed out on. A strong blush came across Becca’s cheeks when she realized what was inevitably going to happen on the other side of the mirror in the dorm room. ”Oh God. New rule.” They were not playing a drinking game, but that did not stop Becca from taking a big gulp. ”E’rytime we realize what’s gonnae oan in th’ other room, drink.” Becca was sure Maya could follow the train of thought to the inevitable conclusion.
They sat in the kitchen, quietly sipping their drinks, pondering all the implications of having met their doppelgangers from the other side. At least, they were nice people, not some psycho criminals... they were married, which was **** weird, but at least they were in love. Could have been worse.
>>”Thay dae seem guid together, reit? Rebecca… that Rebecca really loves Jesse. Ye can jist teel... Ah’m still sad we couldnae get Jesse it… but at leest we coods gie them thes.”
Maya frowned at the mention of her failure to help Jesse. She was not sure what had happened there. By all logic, she should have been able to take the guy out of the mirror. But, seeing that she could not, Becca was right, at least she could give the couple a chance to...
Maya blinked, staring back at Becca.
>>”Oh God. New rule. E’rytime we realize what’s gonnae oan in th’ other room, drink.”
"Way ahead of ya." Maya grabbed her glass and downed almost half of it. The awkward was very real... Maya coughed as the liquor burned her throat, and shook her head. "Yeah, let's talk about, like, anything else... I'm a little freaked out that Other Me is stuck in the mirrors. You think that could happen to me?..."

Yup, Maya understood where Rebecca was coming from. They tilted their glasses in honor of the married couple’s… “reunion” and made the decision to move on swiftly to a new topic.
Somehow, Rebecca liked the new topic less. Jesse being stuck in the Mirror World was a tragedy she would not inflict upon her worst enemy, and now she was forced to realize how realistic it would be for it to happen to one of her closest friends. ”Nae,” she said firmly, because it was the answer she wanted. ”It’s nae happenin’ tae ye, Maya. Ah mean… we know it can noo, bit that jist means we know tae be careful.” When emotions were not running so high, they could ask Rebecca and Jesse how the accident happened. It would not be easy to talk about, but they would understand the desire to keep Maya safe.
She took another sip to drown out her sobering thoughts. ”Ah’m nae gonna let it happen. Ah’ve seen hoo Ah handle it,” she joked, trying not to let the mood go somewhere dark. Her and Maya were not married, but it would still break her heart to watch her friend cut off from the world around her.
>>”Nae. It’s nae happenin’ tae ye, Maya. Ah mean… we know it can noo, bit that jist means we know tae be careful.”
Yeah. Careful. Trying not to get stuck in the mirrors forever... Maya already knew that this bit of a thought was going to give her some anxiety the next time she had ti mirrorhop during a fight. She made a mental note to ask Jesse when... he had more time to talk (drrrrrrriiiiiink) how exactly he got stuck in there. Their powers might not work exactly the same, but one could never be too careful.
>>”Ah’m nae gonna let it happen. Ah’ve seen hoo Ah handle it,”
"She is into him isn't she" Maya grinned, raising her glass "Here's to true love, and also being on the X-men team in all possible dmi... dimensions." she sipped some more drink and refilled the glass "Here's what I don' get, tho. You have the same face... but I don't?"

Rebecca was undoubtably into Jesse. The way Maya and Becca faded into the background once they had their hands on one another made that clear. (And another drink for good measure!) ”Aye. Ah mean, obviously they’re married, but… she really looves him.”
Brushing off the thought, Rebecca raised her glass and clinked it against Maya’s. Her friend was still wondering about the discrepancy between herself and Jesse. Becca took an extra sip while she gave the question some thought.
In time, it was starting to make sense to her, even if the reasoning was a little… arbitrary? ”Okay. Ah hink Ah got it. Sae yer a gendershifter. Jesse is a full-oan shapeshifter. He disnae hae th’ same face coz he disnae hae a face.” She paused before realizing how dumb her statement sounded without further explanation. ”Ah mean loch a permanent face. Maybe he jist switches all th’ time?” It was hard to grasp the idea of a person who had no face to truly call their own, but with a shapeshifter, it was not impossible.
”Sae Ah guess doppelgangers dinnae hae tae hae th’ same mutations,” she thought aloud. ”Oh, richt. Other Rebecca shoots lasers. Frae her eyes. Sae… there’s that.”
They were polishing off the first glass of liquor mighty fast... but given the situation, no one would have objected to that. The alcohol buzz was at least making some of the weird seem less shocking, and more like a thought exercise neither of them was ever getting out of. Like, how come that Mirror Mirror did not look like... either of Mirror?
>>”Okay. Ah hink Ah got it. Sae yer a gendershifter. Jesse is a full-oan shapeshifter. He disnae hae th’ same face coz he disnae hae a face... Ah mean loch a permanent face. Maybe he jist switches all th’ time?”
"Ugh. That'd suck." Maya commented, sipping her drink "I mean, Mom switches all the time too, but she like... had her own face. I knew it was the real one because she looked like me, kinda." she added, as an explanation.
>>”Sae Ah guess doppelgangers dinnae hae tae hae th’ same mutations... Oh, richt. Other Rebecca shoots lasers. Frae her eyes. Sae… there’s that.”
"So... I got the same powers but different faces, and you got different powers but the same face." Maya summed it up wisely "Y'know... plus some years. And some tattoos. I bet your alter-ego has seen some sh*t." she sighed, resting her head on her arms "Someone one day's gonna write a freakin Psychology dissertation about all this..."

Yet another thing to tie Jessie and Maya together: Maya’s mother. It was not a topic they talked about often, but Rebecca got a rundown of her and her mother’s experiences during her time away. ”Aye, yer shapeshiftin, assassin ma. Ah cannae think of nae havin’ a ‘me’ tae look back in mah reflection.”
Oh wow, when did Rebecca’s glass hit empty? Probably for the best; an empty glass could fit more booze.
It was hard to make sense of the rules when it came to alternate-versions of people. They only had two examples so far, but even amongst their two copies, there were differences. ”Psychology, physics, philosophy. Ah bit thes changes everythin’.”
Rebecca thought about the differences between her and her own clone-copy-type person. ”It’s weird ‘at she’s older. Ah wonder if ‘at changed a lot? Bein’ born earlier. What else changed? Daes Jesse alsae hae an asskickin’ assassin ma?”
Another sip of liquor burned down her throat. ”Dae ye hink Ah’d look guid wi’ tattoos?” It was a non-sequitur, but Rebecca was just rattling off thoughts and theories. ”They wark fur 'er. Jesse seems tae loch them.” He was probably in the process of liking them in the other room.
>> ”Psychology, physics, philosophy. Ah bit thes changes everythin’.”
"Yeah." Maya agreed with another sip. Things would never be the same again. Physicists would be vindicated, or out of a job. Scientists will be clamoring at the portal for research time. Psychologists will be overwhelmed. Especially if the doppelganger thing was generally true for everyone...
>>”It’s weird ‘at she’s older. Ah wonder if ‘at changed a lot? Bein’ born earlier. What else changed? Daes Jesse alsae hae an asskickin’ assassin ma?”
"I have no clue." Maya sighed, thinking about her own parentage "Maybe he has a teleporting da. Or both. Or neither?..."
Too. Many. Possibilities. Drink.
>>”Dae ye hink Ah’d look guid wi’ tattoos? They wark fur 'er. Jesse seems tae loch them.”
"Yeah, you would." that was one thing Maya did not have to think about too long. Becca looked good in general, and she would look good with tattoos as well. "Jus'... don' get the same ones as her?..."
She paused, staring into her drink.
"So... ya think there's two of everyone?... Or more, in more dimensions?"

It was odd to think about doppelganger parents. Did both Rebecca’s have the same parents? And how different were they? It was hard to stomach the idea of a world where her parents were not loving and supportive, but it was a new world with literally infinite possibilities.
Things were feeling heavy, so it was nice of Maya to indulge Becca’s side-thought. It was also nice for her to answer so quickly and decisively. Becca took a moment to beam with pride. ”Fair. I hink it’s safe tae say nae tattoos ‘at mah ex ur mah doppelganger hae.” Between Vanessa and Alt-Rebecca, that actually eliminated a significant number of possible tattoo options.
There was a pause while they both took sips, but Maya lowered her glass and peered into it. Her mind was at work thinking about the brave new world they were living in, and her question was impossibly open-ended.
”Ah mean, mebbe? Possibly. Mebbe some died. Mebbe some were ne’er born coz their parents ne’er ended up together?” They still had no clue how different life was in the other universe, and what kind of impact that would have.
The options were near infinite, which led to the next question. ”There micht e’en be infinite earths, loch some scientists say. Let’s jist hope thes is th’ only rip ‘at opens. Thes is awreddy gonnae be a mess.”
It was Rebecca’s turn to look into her glass to divine some answers. ”Alternate dimensions an’ possible futures.” It was hard not to think about the Sebastian dreams when she was face to face with yet another version of herself who grew up to be different than she always imagined. ”Hink there’s really a universe fer every decision we dae ur dinnae make? Aw those wee choices makin' an impact?” An infinite amount of Rebecca’s could be running around with lives infinitely worse than hers, and by that reasoning, another infinite amount of Rebecca’s made different, better choices.
Those thoughts would be easier to process with another sip.
>>”Fair. I hink it’s safe tae say nae tattoos ‘at mah ex ur mah doppelganger hae.”
"Good rule." Maya drank to that. She had never really considered tattoos, mostly because she had no idea how they would behave with the constant shifting, but she was not against them either, especially if they were nice and artistic. The other redhead had good taste, she had to give her that.
>>”Ah mean, mebbe? Possibly. Mebbe some died. Mebbe some were ne’er born coz their parents ne’er ended up together?... There micht e’en be infinite earths, loch some scientists say. Let’s jist hope thes is th’ only rip ‘at opens. Thes is awreddy gonnae be a mess.”
"We don' even know what made the rip." Maya pointed out, slightly worried "You think it was a mutant that like... Jumps?... Slides?..." she paused, considering the thought "Let's hope thas the only one. I don' wanna see how our other doppe... dople... versions are doing."
Two full glasses of liquor in, and she was already having trouble with big words. Maybe she should have eaten something first...
>>”Alternate dimensions an’ possible futures... Hink there’s really a universe fer every decision we dae ur dinnae make? Aw those wee choices makin' an impact?”
"Oh God I hope not." Maya looked alarmed, something she quickly washed down with some more drink "I've made some bad decisions along the way... But I think is safe to say that... if we are X's in many universes... in a lot of them we are prolly dead. Is that weird? Is it weird that i don't think that's weird?..."

Maya brought up a good point: they were completely unaware of what might have begun the rip. For all they knew, it was a mutant who wanted to build a bridge between worlds? If so, who knew how many more rips they could open, of course, assuming the decision was even made intentionally. ”Heel, we dornt e'en know if it'd be mutants. If thaur really ur infinite worlds, whose tae say we're only talkin' abit mutants?”
Mutation was already a stretch of the imagination for some people to get used to when news of mutants hit the mainstream. Now, if tears in reality were possible, was there really any limit to what might be real in another world? ”If thes is possible, Ah’m nae rulin' it a warld whaur magic exists.”
Maya was not a fan of Rebecca’s “infinite universes based on infinite choices” theory. She thought about how many of their X-Versions must have been dead if that was the case. It made sense; after any given mission, they all knew there was a million different little ways they could have died. ”Ah hink we jist accept we’ll nae live forever. Ye an' Ah baith died in th' sebastian dreams, efter aw.” Dying in the dreams had been one of the things they shared in their conversations at the bar in Budapest. Maybe it was just hard to be affected by alternate versions of yourself being dead when you had to experience the death of the potential future version of yourself.
”Look oan th' bricht side: we've made bad decisions, but we clearly huvnae made th' warst decisions. Ye an' Ah ur still haur in thes universe. Nae every Maya an’ Rebecca can say ‘at.”
Rebecca took another solemn sip of her drink, before adding, ”Weel, except Magic Maya an' Becca. Ah’m sure they're alife. Wi' pretty pointy hats.” So maybe she was starting to feel the effects of their drunken philosophy session.
What caused the rip? No one knew yet, and from the way things were standing, no one would know for a while yet. It could be a mutant, or some technology from either side, or...
>>”Heel, we dornt e'en know if it'd be mutants. If thaur really ur infinite worlds, whose tae say we're only talkin' abit mutants? If thes is possible, Ah’m nae rulin' it a warld whaur magic exists.”
Magic. Maya generally liked the idea of magic; she grew up on wonderful stories of heroes and magic, heck, she was named after two of them, really, and she was absolutely willing to entertain the idea that magic existed, at least in some of the endless number of universes, and that some version of herself/himself was living in some of these worlds, being a badass sorcerer of some sort. She grinned. "God, I hope so."
>>”Ah hink we jist accept we’ll nae live forever. Ye an' Ah baith died in th' sebastian dreams, efter aw. Look oan th' bricht side: we've made bad decisions, but we clearly huvnae made th' warst decisions. Ye an' Ah ur still haur in thes universe. Nae every Maya an’ Rebecca can say ‘at.”
Maya raised her glass again, to not-so-awful decisions, to being alive, to not living forever, and to all the Beccas and Mayas that did not make it this far in their own universe. It was a heavy toast, even if she did not pronounce it, so it required her to drink deep. They were burning through the bottle she had stolen from Sam; she'd have to remember to replace if before he got home. If she remembered anything in the morning, that is.
