Nate did know Xavia. As a teacher, she joined the staff in recent memory, but Nate had met her once before that. The plant-mancer came to the Mansion as a potential benefactor, and the two ended up caught in a flirtatious situation. It was in the days leading up to the end of his relationship with Quin, when tensions and emotions ran high. Now that they were working together, Nate and Xavia only interacted during staff meetings. That might have been partially the art teacher’s fault.
”Yes, Xavia. We’re acquainted,” he admitted, not looking to give away any more than that. That encounter was years in the past, and neither teacher needed to be the subject of rumors. (Well, more rumors than the typical Xavier’s teacher dealt with in the line of duty.)
Speaking of rumors, evidently Alexandra was not oblivious to what kind of school the Mansion was, which was fair; she met Xavia, and the school was public knowledge now. Nate was also more open than his “shadowy” past, and if he was going to own up to being an ex-con for the rest of his life, he saw no reason to shy away from his mutant identity. ”I am a mutant, yes. I manipulate my own shadow.”
As a form of demonstration, his shadow moved flat along the ground toward Loki. As it neared the dog, a mass of darkness rose from the shadow, forming a hand of similar dimensions to Nate’s own. Understandably, Loki eyed the hand warily. Very carefully, the shadow hand moved to pet the dog. On the off chance it decided to bite, Nate could at least take comfort in knowing he only felt pressure with his shadow, not pain.
Turning back at Alexandra, his eyes looked her over, sizing her up. Things had been going well, so he would have been disappointed in the dark-haired woman if she was about to reveal some ugly true colors. ”I certainly hope that will not be an obstacle with us doing business together.”
