The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

“You can’t kill all of us.” Said one of the thugs. Sam hefted the bottle and took a big swig and burped when the whiskey was no longer in his mouth. One of the thugs ran at him and ducked down hoping to tackle Sam to the ground. Even barefoot he was still more capable of moving than some of the muscle heads were. Sam pivoted and swept his leg out from under the man charging and lifted his bottle again.
He was drunk now and angry. Knowing that Juliette wanted to talk if she saw him like this he thought it was best to come straight to the danger room. It was easier to hit things than talk, he felt better when he hit things. In the past having a thought process like that was out of character for him but between everything he had gone through in the past two years had been weighing heavily on him. He was tired but couldn’t sleep; the nightmares still wouldn’t allow it.
Sam turned and punched as one of the thugs snuck up on him he still held the bottle in his hand while his free hand made contact with the thugs nose. They weren’t particularly strong but Sam needed to work out some rage and they were the best way to do it.
His shirt was already ripped revealing fresh scars and ones that had barley started to heal. Doc stopped treating him as much due to his consumption of alcohol. Said he wasn’t going to keep healing Sam if he was hell bent on killing himself, it was fine with Sam, the pain from each marking on his skin remained him he was alive, and in the real world.
Sam threw an elbow sending another assailant down. Some of the strikes were fatal but they were hard light constructs so Sam didn’t feel bad about it. ”Increase difficulty.” Sam yelled as he threw an empty bottle at one causing it to shatter on a thug. Sam reached down and grabbed another bottle this one smaller than before but still full.
The one thing Mirror was not looking forward to in returning to the Mansion: Having to face Sam. So much so that she did not even seek him out the first day she arrived, spending part of the day with Becca instead. The next morning, however, Gawain worked up the courage to finally talk to the guy who was the closest thing to a brother he had ever had.
He had some trouble finding him. He was not in his office; his room was a horrible mess (Gawain peeked in through the mirror), and he was not teaching a class either. People he asked either shrugged, or muttered, or gave Gawain a funny look, until he put his foot down and managed to scare a bunch of students into telling him that Sam had locked himself in the DR. With booze.
Gawain took a deep breath before he walked into the God Room and froze the simulation, leaving Sam in the middle of a bunch of freeze-frame thugs, and a bottle in hand. Stepping through the glass reflection, he made his way down to the DR.
"Hey Sam" he said a little sheepishly "I'm back. Sorry for disappearin' on you, I can explain..."

Sam sidestepped the falling body, no doubt the big guy thought a body press would work. It didn’t in fact it worked so poorly Sam managed to kick the thug in the gut before he landed in air. That last bit didn’t process with Sam right away till he felt another body heat dropping into the danger room. Sam loosened his stance for a second until he realized who had stopped the brawl Sam had started.
”I’m sure you can…” Gawain… he wasn’t dead. Sam knew that but he had not been expecting his friend any time soon. Sam raised his bottle in his hand and poured a little on a cut he had on his forearm. It burned, and was far more effective than stabbing himself like he did when he found out Jorge was alive. He was in the real world and Gawain was standing in front of him.
”Computer double the thugs, increase difficulty and unfreeze.” Sam threw another kick again and got back into his solid fighting stance and sipped a little from his bottle. ”There was a reason I locked the doors.” Sam grunted loudly as he ducked and uppercut a body with a glass jaw. The man collapsed and he turned and back kicked the next one. Sam tossed the bottle for Gawain to catch. If he was going to brawl with Sam he was going to drink.
”You can still drink?” Sam asked as he dodged another, ”You can still fight?” he grabbed a guy broke his arm them threw him to the side, ”You can talk.”
Gawain winced as Sam poured some liquor on a fresh-looking cut. With the booze, and the simulation, and the bruises, he seemed intent on torturing himself. In fact, he looked a lot worse for the wear than the last time Gawain had seen him... which made him feel all the more guilty for leaving.
>>”Computer double the thugs, increase difficulty and unfreeze. There was a reason I locked the doors.”
The thugs multiplied and attacked again. Gawain growled, dodging a punch and delivering a kick in someone's gut. He wanted to talk, not train - he had had plenty of that with Jillian in the past months, both for practice and for his life. But if Sam needed to work some anger issues out, they might as well...
Gawain punch someone in the throat, then rolled away as his leg was swept from under him. He came up on his feet just in time to catch the bottle.
>>”You can still drink? You can still fight? You can talk.”
Gawain too a swig of the whisky, the liquor burning its way down his throat. He was not in a drinking mood, and at least one of them had to be relatively sober for this to not turn into a total disaster... at the next attack, Gawain spun, and broke the bottle on a thug's head.
"You know why I left" he noted, back to back with Sam as the thugs closed in "I couldn't have the entire Assassin's Guild follow me back to the Mansion. It was only a matter of time. The school's got enough to deal with without my family drama takin' any victims."

The bottle was caught Sam was content for the moment knowing he wouldn’t have wasted all that alcohol on Gawain. Honestly though he should have caught it. Sam made sure the gender shifter had good reflexes and with his/her mother being such a well know assassin Sam didn’t know why he was worried.
Sam shifted and caught a punch then heard the bottle break. Sam didn’t see it but it the sound echoed enough for it to drown out the thugs. Sam threw the guy then looked back to Gawain dodging a strike. ”There was still some left!” Sam yelled as he caught an elbow then hefted the man and threw him at Gawain. ”I don’t care why you left, I care why you didn’t come back. And **** the assassins guild. I could have handled half of them.” Sam said sidestepping another strike making his way towards Gawain.
”You call me. Tell me what is keeping you from your home and then I sort it out.” Sam threw a punch this time instead of at a thug he threw it at Gawain then followed it up with a side-kick to a thug who was running at him. ”I would have come to you and your very attractive mother.”
Sam threw a guy at Gawain. The mirrorwalked swore and spun out of the way, into another thug that tried to grapple him. Gawain freed himself with a couple of kicks. Worth it. Less alcohol for Sam to consume.
>>”I don’t care why you left, I care why you didn’t come back. And **** the assassins guild. I could have handled half of them.”
"Yes, and the other half would have razed the Mansion to the ground" Gawain grumbled, handing out punches like they were candy. His knuckles would kill him later, but maybe he could sweet-talk Doc into healing them, just this once... It was family therapy, after all. Even if the X-men could take down the assassins eventually, there would have been serious casualties. And Sam knew it.
>>”You call me. Tell me what is keeping you from your home and then I sort it out. I would have come to you and your very attractive mother.”
"Oh I don't doubt that." Gawain muttered. Sam hit on everything that moved and was vaguely female-shaped, but Mom was off limits, and he had been clear on that from the start. "Look, I'd love to explain, but I can't. By the time we managed to take them off our tail... well. It involved a huge mess, and a telepath. I literally..." he punched another guy, then shook his hand in pain "... don't remember."

”So then we take the fight to them!” Sam shot back as he pushed another thug out of the way. Making his way towards Gawain he turned his back to the guy and then started swinging on anyone who got close. ”I still have some contacts that would have loved to get them out of work. Sides, what’s to say they won’t be back?” Sam said turning and throwing an uppercut at Gawain instead of a thug.
”A telepath?” Sam said mockingly as he turned and punched a thug in the nose forcing him to drop. Bending his knees Sam ducked out of the way of a hook and returned a front kick to a man in black in the gut causing the man to stagger back as more thugs appeared and charged the two.
”Must be hard having to deal with a telepath.” Sam’s punches started to get harder as more rage trickled into his voice, ”Not like they gave you a perfect world only to find out it was poison.” Sam punched again forcing another thug to the ground. Sam kept punching him till the hologram stopped moving. ”And you are constantly reminded of everything that had happened over countless life times making you question your own reality!” his knuckles were bleeding now. Sam wasn’t sure if it was his at first but he didn’t care, he was still here for a reason even if Gawain ruined his drinking.
Sam’s strikes started to become more fatal as he aimed for windpipes and joints. The sound of bones snapping helped him calm down a bit but he wouldn’t be calm until he couldn’t move any more. ”So how long till you run off again?” Sam said trying not to sound like it mattered to him.
>>”So then we take the fight to them! I still have some contacts that would have loved to get them out of work. Sides, what’s to say they won’t be back?”
The uppercut caught Gawain unprepared. Sam was going to town on the thugs, but Mirror had assumed that he was done punching friends - apparently not so. The impact was hard, and Gawain stumbled back, spitting some blood from where he bit his cheek. Ow. Okay, so maybe Sam had more anger to work out than he had anticipated.
>>”A telepath? Must be hard having to deal with a telepath. Not like they gave you a perfect world only to find out it was poison. And you are constantly reminded of everything that had happened over countless life times making you question your own reality!”
Gawain knew that Sam had bad experiences with telepaths. He didn't blame him. It was far from ideal, having one's mind messed with, even when it was intentional and asked for. Gawain was keenly aware of the gaps in his memory, and kept tracing them, like one traces the place of a missing tooth. He had opted not to replace them with false memories. He was not sure if it was better or worse.
"That's not it." he grumbled, elbowing and kicking to give his knuckles a rest "And anyhow, it's done now. They are not coming back."
>>”So how long till you run off again?”
"I'm not!"
Sam was getting more than a little crazy. Sure, the thugs were generic hard light constructs, designed to be practiced on, so killing them was not a big deal - except Sam was not the type who would train for that. He had to be more than a little drunk, and more than a little pissed.

”Someone wasted my whiskey when I was already in a mood!” Sam grunted as he broke an arm that was flung at him. Pushing the broken man away Sam turned a looked to Gawain, ”What the hell happened to you?” Sam turned and punched and kicked till his cuts and scars started to burst open.
Letting out a few grunts as he tried to fill his lungs his muscles were tense and he was rigid something he normally didn’t condone when sparing or in real life fights. The air around them got colder as he slowly started to calm down.
”There was a reason why I locked myself in here.” the icemancer shifted, dodged another strike and then broke the would be attackers knee. ”I don’t sleep, I don’t eat. I needed this.” he then pointed to the bottle, ”and I wanted that.”
>>”Someone wasted my whiskey when I was already in a mood! What the hell happened to you?”
"I was chased around the world by mutant assassins?" Gawain grumbled back, ducking, kicking, and punching. His hits were not as intentionally deadly as Sam's, but he was definitely losing patience with the fake thugs. Dealing with Sam was hard enough.
>>”There was a reason why I locked myself in here. I don’t sleep, I don’t eat. I needed this. And I wanted that.”
"Yeah, well, tough break." Gawain snapped, then spun out of reach of the next thug. "Computer. Freeze simulation."
The people froze around them. Gawain caught his breath and wiped some blood from his chin, glaring at Sam.
"Look, the last thing I wanted was to spend half a year on the run, away from you. And my own damn girlfriend. But I did, it happened, it's done, and I don't remember most of it. So. What the hell is your excuse for being a mess? And don't say you missed me this much."

When the thugs stopped moving the air around them got colder. Sam’s irritation with the day hadn’t subsided and he still needed to vent. With the program frozen the thugs didn’t move no matter how many times threw a punch at their stupid faces. With his knuckles bleeding more than before he let out a low growl.
”Mind control. Lack of sleep. Depression. Take your pick.” it was one of the first times he had verbalized he had been depressed since he had last talked to his girlfriend. Sam turned his head towards Gawain and he lifted his arms. ”I’ve been doing too much talking lately.” Sam took a step closer towards Gawain then ran at him jumping off one of the frozen simulations and throwing a kick towards the gender shifter.
”It’s not helping as much as everyone says it would.” Sam lied since his talk with Juliette he had been able to sleep a little better, the day excluded, which was one of the reasons he had been so upset it almost felt like he was starting to revert back and he was trying to prevent that.
After the kick Sam landed and he threw a hook at Gawain’s head, ”Eve is still dating you? Even after you left for as long as you did?” he was trying to bait the mirror walker into fighting back.
>>”Mind control. Lack of sleep. Depression. Take your pick. I’ve been doing too much talking lately. It’s not helping as much as everyone says it would.”
Well, at least that was an honest answer. Gawain knew the feeling, and it was not the first time Sam had fallen apart, for various reasons. At least he was not blaming Mirror for all of it. That would have sucked. On the other hand, Sam was attacking him now.
Gawain raised his forearms to block the kick, but the momentum itself pushed him stumbling backwards, and the punch following close behind caught him unawares. He shook his head, trying to get the ringing out of his ears, and took on a defensive stance.
>>”Eve is still dating you? Even after you left for as long as you did?”
Gawain's eyes narrowed. That hurt more than the punch.
"No, she's not. At least as far as I can tell. She's gone." he admitted with obvious bitterness. He was not angry at Evelyn - he was angry at himself for losing her. "So I guess we're both single now huh." he moved forward, throwing a punch and a kick at Sam "Got more of that frustration to work out?"

Sam didn’t block the punch, he taught Gawain enough to know that there was a follow up attack coming his way and when the kick came Sam blocked it with his forearm and stepped in closer to Gawain throwing a palm strike to his chest followed with a sweep to his leg.
”I haven’t seen or heard from her in a while.” Sam said admittedly as he brought his hand up into a fist then swung out a hammer at Gawain. ”I tried calling her too, no answer but if there was something to worry about we’d know.” Sam said knowing Eve was more than capable of handeling herself.
”Nope, just you.” Sam said with a little smirk, ”Had a girlfriend for a few months now. She is the one who is getting me to… have feelings.” Sam said as he threw another punch. ”Always, sides I need someone who can take a punch and dish them back out.” Sam said with a smirk.
Sam hit him in the chest and swept his leg, and Gawain ended on his back with a thud. He was angry at himself for not doing better, but also, if he wanted to be honest, his heart was not in the fight.
>>”I haven’t seen or heard from her in a while. I tried calling her too, no answer but if there was something to worry about we’d know.”
"Yeah." Gawain muttered, getting back to his feet. Evelyn was fine, wherever she was. She had to be. And Gawain did not blame her for leaving, after everything he had done. Still, he missed her, more than he had when he was on the run, and the wound felt fresh. But at least he had Sam...
>>”Nope, just you. Had a girlfriend for a few months now. She is the one who is getting me to… have feelings.”
"Seriously?!" Gawain blinked, ducking the next punch and throwing a low kick of his own, getting back into the rhythm of sparring "She's gotta be a special lady if she's puttin' up with you... Who is she?"

Sam leaned into the leg that was kicked and then quickly moved it back after it was hit despite the wounds opening on his body and some blood leaking out he felt alive and fine. Adrenaline was something he clearly needed. His heart raced and he felt a little like his old self, if that old self was drunk, which once upon a time it wasn’t.
”Juliette.” Sam said with a little smirk, ”She is. Too good for me but she cares about me for some reason.” the icemancer said as he threw a knife hand to Gawain’s shoulder. Sam must have been doing something right when he first started talking to Juliette because with all that he had going on in his life and for her to stick around still. ”She’s either crazy or the most patient woman alive.” Sam said with a smirk.
”You’ll meet her eventually I’m sure. She’s on the team. You might need to do a tryout again though.” Sam said taunting as he threw another string of punches. ”You’re out of practice, would have thought your hot mom would have taught you some things.” Sam said trying to get him into the spar session.
