The pizza was just too good. The scent, the taste, Agnes absolutely loved it. She knew that she got weird looks from people whenever she asked for pineapple on her pizza, but she didn’t care. She loved it. To her it was one of the most amazing things on this earth. Her friends in college were always vocal about her choice but Rebecca was suspiciously quiet on the matter. Though the redhead never said anything out loud, Agnes did catch the grimace on her face every now and again. Deep down she knew that the Scot didn’t seem to care for her choice in topping but that didn’t stop Agnes was offering her a bit and watching as she reluctantly took a nibble. Some would say it was cruel; but Agnes would say it was crueler to not have pineapple on pizza.
Settling back into her seat, Agnes could feel some of the tension of the day beginning to slip off of her bones. She was exhausted but she was thankful that she did this. Had she stayed in her hotel, she would have been just moping around the room by herself or curled up in bed and waiting for sleep to take her again. She had been sleeping so much that her internal clocks were all thrown off. It was to the point where she could easily stay up until three or four in the morning and then knock out until noon; such was her state of life right now. But until sleep overtook her, she would enjoy the peace and tranquility that came with hanging out with an old friend.
Though Agnes did have access to a TV, she wasn’t a regular watcher of the most popular things. She tended to watch old reruns due to her life on the road or reading books or listening to music. That was the majority of her entertainment. River did manage to drag her to the movies or get her to watch a new television show, but everything was disjointed for the young violinist. She came in in the middle of seasons, at the end of some big story arc, or just ended up not caring. So it was pretty safe to say that Agnes didn’t have the best knowledge when it came to television. When she rattled off suggestions to Rebecca, they were just titles that she had written down and told herself she would one day watch, not because she knew much about them. Thankfully Rebecca seemed to be the expert.
Rebecca pulled the shows up on her TV and Agnes read the descriptions along with her, her eyes rolling over the text in time with Rebecca’s narration. Chess and Crowns sounded interesting but maybe a little too heavy for just some casual watching. And Big Beautiful Fibbers just from the description it sounded like it could hit a little too close to home for her. Oh but Paranormal sounded like it would be a good option! However Rebecca was quick to veto that option, causing the insect queen to pout a bit in disappointment. She was just going to have to watch it on her own.
Then the option of watching her ex-girlfriend on ViewTube came up. Agnes would have initially said that it wasn’t necessary but Rebecca had to add that she would be watching her, anxiously, to see her reactions. How could Agnes pass that up. Looking back to her ex, a sadistic smirk on her face she nodded her head. It was Rebecca’s fault for making her pick, after all.
”ViewTube. I’m ashamed to admit that I have yet to watch an episode,” however, she didn’t look ashamed. She looked just a tad wicked. ”I’m sure there’s some great stuff that I will in no way be able to tease you about.”
Agnes was unsure how much time had passed because she was having far too much fun watching her ex-girlfriend’s internet vlogging career from the beginning and on. The first videos were grainy, an indication that she didn’t have the best of equipment but steady they got better and better with quality, sound, and graphics. The animated intro she thought was adorable and of course Rebecca’s enthusiasm was infectious. The violinist found herself chuckling and clapping along with the videos. However some of them made her cringe, shaking her head and casting looks of Rebecca that practically screamed ”Why aren’t you more embarrassed by this?!”. Still, it was a good time to have and now she was one video…she couldn’t remember…but it was another one of those videos where she was covering her mouth in shock.
The Toe of Satan. It was some candy lollipop that was concocted by the world’s cruelest minds. Red in color, the confectionary creation was neon red in color and shaped to look like a toe, the devil’s toe. Rated at nine million Scovile units on the heat scale, it was considered one of the hottest edibles in creation. So, of course there would have to be a viral challenge rolling through the internet, a challenge that called for competitors to hold this lollipop in their mouth for five minutes and they couldn’t remove it or throw up or they’d lose. It was unnecessarily cruel – of course Rebecca would partake.
Sitting on the couch, her legs crossed, Agnes watched in awe at the recorded doppleganger of her ex as she struggled to keep the lollipop in her mouth, the time in the corner ticking down; only two minutes had passed. As she watched with undivided attention, Agnes casually petted on of her massive Amazonian centipedes, Bitey, who was curled up on her lap. The other, Tiny, was still nestled within her other forearm. Despite his name, Bitey liked the attention.
Covering her mouth as she watched Rebecca try to keep from retching, Agnes turned back to her ex. ”What is wrong with you?” She tried to hide her amusement but it was difficult. ”I mean…look at yourself! Your face is so red your freckles are disappearing.”

Rebecca laid out the options and made the rules clear, yet Agnes still seemed dead-set on ignoring the parameters for choosing the ViewTube option. Maybe her ex just had selective hearing allowing her to assume Rebecca was just offering her videos up for consumption. As much as she wanted to roll her eyes, it was flattering for Agnes to show an interest in her content. It was going to be painful watching her own stuff, especially from the early days of her channel, but it was also an experience she did not get to share with many people. Agnes was the right person to do this with. ”Fine,” she agreed begrudgingly, ”Under protest, we can watch mah channel.”
There was definitely some moments where Rebecca had to struggle with cringing at herself. The quality of her content and production value, some of the lame jokes she made while she was still finding her voice as an entertainer, and some of the things she was willing to do for views back in the day. She still remembered asking another popular Tuber for advice, and got the honest suggestion of, “Buy a Push-Up Bra.” Which she did, begrudgingly. And it worked, disappointingly. She was happy when she realized her fanbase was loyal and dedicated enough that when she stopped, there was no major loss of subscribers. Not that there was not a benefit to having a miracle-worker bra on hand, but it was tiring feeling like every video she did, she needed her chest pushed up to her chin.
Rebecca was being smart about the videos she was choosing. Embarrassing videos were fine and even worth a laugh, but she knew some videos might touch upon the topic of her love life and her ex-girlfriend. She did not mention Agnes by name, but the violinist was not dumb; she would recognize when she was a topic in a video. It was not that Rebecca cast Agnes in a negative light, but the evening was so stress-free, she figured it was not worth throwing a spotlight on their past.
Why bring up a serious video when they could watch Rebecca struggle with one of the hottest confections known to man? She was being called out for the questionable life choice, but she needed a moment to catch her breath after laughing so hard at her poor, beet red past self. ”It wisnae mah faut! Ah was called it by Nessa an' 'er team tae dae th' challenge! Mah honur was oan th' line! Ah cooldn’t jist say no; she woods hae given me sae much grief!” Challenge culture on ViewTube was serious business, especially when you were called out on a video with thousands of views on it. She certainly did not want to be outed as a chicken to her fans; Pixelbecky feared no treat!
After defending herself, Rebecca realized her comment was the first time she had thought of Nessa all night. It was not bad; she was hanging out with another friend, and Nessa was not her girlfriend (yet,) and as such was not entitled to a constant spot in her mind, but there was something about being with Agnes while Nessa went about her night somewhere else that caused the vlogger to blush. ”Anyway, oan tae th' next video,” she said, switching over to a rant about the worst kinds of people on social media, which was always a crowd pleaser, and one of her top viewed videos after it was shared by some other channels and went viral.
Agnes really didn’t care how much it may have bothered Rebecca that they were watching some of her most embarrassing moments on the Smart TV. It wasn’t that she was cruel, but A.) she found it funny and B.), well, there was so much that she missed from Rebecca’s life after the two of them had broken up. She knew that it was some time after they had parted ways that Rebecca had thrown herself into the internet world, slowly making a named for herself on the internet. Sadly, Agnes would never have been able to keep up had she known about that. But, now that she had the chance, a small part of her was curious as to what the lovely Scot had gone through while she was gone.
It didn’t escape the violinist’s attention that Rebecca was avoiding certain episodes of her show. While for the most part Agnes couldn’t see much other than a thumbnail and title, there were a couple that Rebecca was skipping over under the guise of “This one’s REALLY funny” or “That one was boring”. In her fleeting glimpses at them, the insect queen thought for sure she had seen a title or two centering around her love life and long-distance relationships. She was curious but Agnes wouldn’t push it. Maybe there were some things that she really shouldn’t know about.
She laughed, she cried, she petted her giant Amazonian centipede and just shook her head at some of things that Rebecca put herself through. She had to admit that the young Scot certainly had dedication. She spoke on some serious topics and orchestrated some rather humors skits. It seemed that the redhead was ordained for the life of an internet celebrity and Agnes couldn’t have been happier to know that. So with a smile she would glance with pride over to her ex-girlfriend between every video.
However, once they got to the video known as “Satan’s Toe Challenge”, Agnes just found herself feeling utterly embarrassed for her friend. She was both amused and horrified at the punishment that her ex was putting herself through. As the five minutes ticked down, Internet!Rebecca was sweating from every pore on her face, even her eyes. She was struggling to hold the beet-red lollipop in her mouth as heavy accent had descended into barely understood words and whines. It was almost too much to watch but Agnes couldn’t peel her eyes away from the screen.
Finally, watching as the video was nearly done, Agnes turned back to her ex and had to ask what was wrong with her? It wasn’t with an accusing tone or anything, just she had to know what would possess her ex to do something like this. Rebecca herself was finding the whole thing hysterical, laughing madly and shaking her head. She admitted that this wasn’t her doing but rather because she had been called out by another person and her honor was on the line.
Agnes laughed along with her, watching as the timer ticked down. To her surprise Rebecca had made it and then quickly devoured what had to be an entire gallon of ice cream before she could talk normal again. She hated to see the pain on Rebecca’s face but it was also extremely amusing so she shook her head, only passing mild judgement upon her ex now.
As the video came to an end, Rebecca moved onto the next one. This one was about the types of people on social media. Watching Rebecca in various outfits, poking fun at the various users of the internet, something shook loose in her mind. The Scot had mentioned that it was “Nessa” who had goaded her over ViewTube to take the challenge. In the back of her mind she realized that the name sounded obnoxiously familiar. Where had she heard it before?
The seconds ticked away. The puzzle pieces fell into place. At the end of her thoughts, it finally all clicked into place: Nessa was that girl that Rebecca had been out with at the wine bar. The redhead had made passing mention of her when they were in her apartment the last time. It seemed like they had just started dating or something, Agnes couldn’t fully recall. Unfortunately there was a lot of that night that was blurry.
Consciously she crossed her legs, watching as her centipede skittered away from her petting and moved to her other leg and curled up. Idly she continued petting Bitey’s head before she cleared her throat and glanced to her ex. Maybe it wasn’t the best time to bring it up but if they were going to be friends, she had to get used to the fact that Rebecca was dating other women, right?
”So…Nessa huh?” Agnes gave Rebecca s quick whisper of a smile. ”Same ‘Nessa’ from the wine bar, yes?” She smiled and nodded as she turned back, smirking at the video on screen. It probably would have been best to abandon the topic but seeing as she ‘just’ brought it up, it probably would have seemed weird if she didn’t say anymore. ”Um…how…how is she? Good, I hope?”
There. She was making an effort. That was all that could be asked of her.

While it was weird to see herself on camera, Rebecca was enjoying herself, especially with such a fun, lighthearted video where she even got to play around with a few costumes and characters. If Agnes did not already know her better than most, she now had access to all the nooks and crannies of the woman Rebecca had become in their time apart. It was hard to call it intimate knowledge when she made her life more or less publicly available for the world, but she wanted Agnes to have free reign of her soul splayed out in ten to fifteen minute segments.
Rebecca was expecting some witty comment from Agnes about the video, but instead, she was surprised by a name. Nessa. She had mentioned her moments earlier in passing, but she forgot that the gamer girl was a brief topic of conversation the last time they were together in the apartment. Rebecca had bowed out at Gotham’s Lost Lady by mentioning her date, so naturally Agnes was a little curious who the girl might be, as would be any friend, probably. Rebecca made it clear that the two ViewTubers were enjoying a first date that night, but it was nothing serious. The wine might have encouraged her to add the stipulation.
Well, now Rebecca was unsure if Nessa was something serious, but she had to be working herself into the conversation with how much time and body heat they were sharing together. Agnes was asking her about Nessa because she was now officially a reoccurring name, and while the thought made her nervous, Rebecca had to deal with knowing she had no good reason to be dishonest. Agnes was a friend asking how things were going with a girl, and nothing more.
”She’s… guid. We’re guid,” she admitted, before adding, ”If we ur a "we" at thes point. We've bin... spendin' mair time together lately.” It felt like an unnecessary detail to explain what kind of “time” Rebecca was spending with her possible paramour. She would keep that detail quiet to most friends, let alone one with the kind of history she shared with Agnes. ”We huvnae hud "the talk," ur whatever it is fowk dae, sae ah dunnae know if we're jist havin' fin, ur... ye know.”
Rebecca looked down at the half-empty glass of pop held between her hands, before apologizing. ”Ah’m sorry, it's probably weird tae gab tae ye abit thes, reit?” Not knowing where she stood with Nessa was a loaded topic of conversation because Nessa was not the only one avoiding “the talk.” Both girls were probably procrastinating because, deep down, neither of them were sure where things stood between Becca and Agnes, and where the redhead wanted them to stand.
In all honesty, the second that Agnes asked about Nessa, she felt like she may have opened a door that didn’t need to be opened. It wasn’t any of her business how Nessa was doing, especially since it was doubtful that she and Rebecca had gotten back to that safe level of their friendship yet, The two of them were just starting again and Agnes was going through a possible break-up, one that was could or could not be partially blamed on the redhead’s readmittance into her life. It was selfish for Agnes to blame the whole thing on the Scot, especially when she didn’t blame her at all. But it was still a balance that the two of them needed to figure out before they could actually call themselves “friends” again.
Still, it was too late now. The words had been uttered. Agnes hoped and prayed under her breath that her little faux pas wouldn’t result in any damage to the evening. She was actually having a pretty fun time. It was good to take that moment to remember who you were with people who once knew you best. It allowed the violinist to unwind for the first time in a long time. Even after she had returned to New York and before she met Rebecca, her time with River made it difficult. She always felt like she was on edge, waiting for something to happen. Now that it had, well, it was almost like she could begin healing and start relaxing again.
The change was immediately felt in the air. As Agnes sat there, looking back and forth between Rebecca and the television set, trying to play things cool, she could actually feel a mysterious fog descending upon them. How were they going to proceed? The violinist, at first, wasn’t quite sure she was wanting to find out, but Rebecca seemed to fine with answering the question; well, mostly fine.
She found her eyes drifting back to the woman as she watched her answer. According to her the both of them were good. She had admitted that she wasn’t quite sure if they were at that “we” point just yet but that they had been spending a lot of time together. Agnes smiled sweetly to her ex, nodding her head in understanding. She wasn’t hurt by the words, as a matter of fact she was glad that Rebecca was moving on with her life, but there was a small pang that she was the only one going through relationship drama at the moment. She wanted that sympathetic ear of someone who had gone through it but Rebecca was most certainly the wrong person for that. They had broken up twice in the past so any advice or sympathy would just be really weird.
Agnes shook the strange thoughts away as she committed to listening to her ex. Rebecca admitted that they were just really having fun right now so that was why “the talk” hadn’t been had. However, in admitting this, Rebecca’s face skewed up into an odd expression as she asked the ex-runaway if it was strange for the two of them to be talking about this. Deep down, Agnes knew that there was a definite weirdness circling the pair of them but she was adamant to at least try this out. If they were going to be friends, they needed to try, right?
Turning her wrist so that her underarm was exposed, Agnes willed Bitey to crawl onto her arm. It only took the beast a second to find the seam and slip underneath the insect queen’s skin. As It crawled inside and nestled itself within, the seam itself closed, leaving only the faintest of lines. With that done, she turned to face her ex and gave her a small, brave smile.
”A…little…” she breathed and just shrugged her shoulders. ”But…I guess if we’re going to be friends again, it’s, you know, just something we’re going to have to get used to. I mean, we don’t have to tell eachother everything,” Agnes said with a small laugh. ”But we can start…I dunno, small? Like just asking how things are going. You know?” She smiled sweetly and gave her friend a tiny nod before she took another breath and closed her sapphire eyes. Counting down in her mind from five, she opened them and went on. ”I’m glad you two are good. She seemed…nice.”

The large insect Agnes had been petting retreated back to its space in its mother’s arm, and beyond the initial cringe of seeing the slit open up in Agnes’s skin to allow him entry, Rebecca took the moment in stride. Living with Agnes had gotten her used to the presence of Tiny and Bitey, and while Rebecca was not about to get affectionate with the bugs as their owner did, she could calmly be around them without losing her lunch. When Agnes allowed the centipede out of her arm, the keeper of the apartment grabbed Domino and squared him away in her bedroom. Things were going well with Agnes, but Domino either eating or getting bitten by Bitey would add unnecessary awkwardness.
There was already so much readily available awkwardness that came with talking to her ex-girlfriend about her current romantic interest. They both knew this was uncharted territory. When they first broke up, Rebecca’s… single experimentations happened while Agnes was not a part of her life. When they reunited, it took time for Agnes to come to terms with what happened, but Gawain and Lexi (and to a lesser extent, Vicente,) were all part of her past at that point. Now Rebecca came home to find her first love engaged to another woman, and was finally learning how to process that, (though hopefully not too late.) It was difficult, but now the shoe was on the other foot. Agnes was watching Rebecca begin to develop attachments to someone who was not the violinist herself. Maybe Agnes was completely over their old romance, but Rebecca would venture to guess that did not make experiencing this new love life as an outsider any easier.
Agnes admitted as much, so they could at least both be open about the inherent weirdness of where they now stood. Learning as they were, Rebecca still found herself impressed by Agnes’s maturity. She was right; they were learning to confide in one another and be happy to see the other happy. They were going to take baby steps together, and that was alright—some topics would grow easier with time, and others might just not be appropriate for them to share anymore. They would learn that line eventually. ”Yoo're pure reit, Ah'll keep onie saucy details tae myself,” she joked with a smirk, (actually keeping the saucy details to herself.)
Even Agnes’s words of approval were small, but substantial. She knew nothing about Nessa, but she wanted to support Rebecca, and knowing that took a weight off her chest. ”She is nice,” Rebecca agreed. Maybe one day, Nessa and Agnes could meet, but that was an idea she had no intention of rushing. ”An' yoo're nice, tay, Aggie. Ah've missed yer friendship.”
Rebecca held her glass of pop up to cling against Agnes’s in celebration of the slow rebuilding of their healthy friendship. Realizing how serious the conversation now felt, she took a deep breath and shook her head, grabbing the remote. ”Ah’m sorry, enaw sappiness. Want tae watch as Ah shout mah heed aff gonnae doon one ay those giant vertical water slides?” The video had a camera facing her the whole trip down, another Go Pro camera recording her point of view, and one of her University friends filming her drop from the ground. Fun, uncomplicated, and just what their night needed to help keep Agnes’s mind away from weighty relationship topics.
At the end of the day, despite any awkwardness that would come up from the two ex-lovers having to rework their life as “just friends”, it was what the violinist wanted. Part of her wanted to be mad, wanted to put at least some of the blame for the disastrous turn her engagement with River had gone upon the young Scot, but deep down she knew that it wasn’t her fault; it was Agnes’. She was the one who have kept her relationship with the redhead from River, she was the one who drank too much wine and got a little too cozy, she was the one who had continuously lied about their relationship to River; in the end, it was always Agnes’ fault and that was something she was just going to have to live with.
She glanced down to the diamond ring that still sat upon her finger. She didn’t even know if it meant anything anymore but on the off-chance that River would come back to her, she didn’t want to risk parting with it. Until her raven-haired beauty herself told her things were done, Agnes was going to persist. Unfortunately she had enough experiences with miscommunications in relationships (insert side-glance to Rebecca) to know to never jump the gun again.
Though there was the smallest pang of sadness in her heart to know that Rebecca was happily moving on from her, she was also happy for the young woman. Deep down all she ever wanted was for Rebecca to be happy. That was why she never stopped her when she got accepted to Oxford; it was a dream for the Scot to go and she was not going to stand in her way. Agnes knew what it was like to have your dreams stomped on (her parents did that for her) so she was not going to be that anchor that weighed the redhead down. Rebecca deserved happiness and Agnes was all the more pleased to help contribute to it, even if her role in the woman’s life has changed.
A smirked crossed her lips when Rebecca had taken her words to heart and stated that she would be keeping the “saucier” details of her relationship with Nessa to herself. Though she was sure that Rebecca knew better than to be so inappropriate, especially so early on in their reconnection, she was thankful that the redhead had said it.
”Good,” she teased. ”The last thing I need to hear is how someone else found all your ticklish spots. I worked hard to learn those.” She offered the redhead a saucy wink. That was enough teasing for a while.
The two shared another look when Rebecca seemed to wistfully refer to Nessa as being nice. Afterwards she had admitted that she missed the friendship that the two of them had had, even before they got together. Agnes missed it too. She nodded in agreement, feeling that nothing else really needed to be said until Rebecca pointed them to the next video, this one a GoPro. Agnes snorted as turned back to the screen and gestured for her to turn it on.
”Haha, put it on,” she said as she set her eyes on the screen. ”I can’t wait to see you go down.”
Poor Agnes. Always so oblivious with her word choice.
