The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"That threat was from one of my favorite web shows."
This whole ordeal seemed to have put Shelby in a good mood. Saph perked up a bit, too. He wasn't used to being with someone who could... fend for themselves? That was a strange way to put it. "Yeah? What show? Gotta be honest, I only ever watched a bit of metube. Heck, I don't even really watch a whole lotta TV." He shrugged. He'd never really thought of his viewing habits until now.
Lots of news. Crime news.
Lots.
The interaction with the mayor went pretty much the same. Maybe a bit scarier. By then, Saph was eyeing her nervously. Jees... She could be intense when she wanted to be.
"Alright, now... where are we supposed to meet up for the negotiations?"
"Uh-ah, eh... uhm... over there... yeah." He pointed to a small open floored building where a small crowd was gathering. "That stuff you mentioned... You haven't... like... Nah, no, never mind."
He turned an headed toward the sort of... pagoda. They had a peace deal to hammer out, right?
"What were the demands? Anything we can work out reasonably?"
"Yeah? What show? Gotta be honest, I only ever watched a bit of metube. Heck, I don't even really watch a whole lotta TV."
"Can't say I blame you. Most of it is drivel these days anyway." She fiddled with the papers, comparing them with a critical eye. "It's a show called Blue vs Red. A couple of comedy writers took a really popular game of the time and made a bunch of skits out of it. The first few seasons were good and then they got a little too deep for my tastes."
"Uh-ah, eh... uhm... over there... yeah. That stuff you mentioned... You haven't... like... Nah, no, never mind."
She glanced over where he pointed, before blinking at him. She was half tempted to just smile and not give him an answer, but thought better of it. "What? No, of course not." She turned in the direction he pointed, rolling both of the papers back up. "Anatomy classes are a requirement for the degree i'm working towards." There was a little crowd already formed up ahead of them. She could see the pirate captain and the mayor already there, standing stiffly beside each other. She stopped not too far off, just outside of the range that would activate the quest. "And when you combine an obscene amount of knowledge about the human body and an over active imagination you get a lot of creative threats. None of which I have any interest ever acting on."
"What were the demands? Anything we can work out reasonably?"
She glanced at her partner and smiled. "The mayor wants attacks on the fishing fleet to stop, as well as a reasonable fee for any and all damages that have been incurred within the span of time that this feud has been going on." She paused, casting a glance over at the grumpy mayor. "... he also apparently wants a date with the Captain of the pirate crew... which will probably be the hard negotiation point for him."
She moved onto the pirate herself, next. "On the other hand, the Captain wants a right to land her fleet here whenever necessary, access to selling various 'wares' at this port, and a pardon from us specifically so that the kingdom can't come after her again for past crimes." She sighed. "The hard part will be getting the mayor to basically hand half of the town over to her in order for the pirates to stay here."
Tapping the rolled up papers on her thigh, she looked back to Saph. "Here are my thoughts on the matter, and then you give yours and we will form a consensus." She paused, waiting for him to reply, before she moved on.
"I think we should convince the Mayor to allow the pirates to dock and live here, but in exchange the pirates will have to offer their services in the form of protection for the fishermen. The captain will pay back the fees owed to the villagers in whatever treasure they may have plundered over the years, but will have the ability to sell and make a profit from 'legal wares' in the future. In doing this the government will agree to pardon past crimes.... but since the pirates will be working for the village as protection, the king will be able to oversee any possible future crimes easily.... i'm not sure how to work that date thing in there... but, meh. I can probably just threaten him again and he'll drop it?"
She waited for a reply, blinking up at him expectantly.
"What? No, of course not. And when you combine an obscene amount of knowledge about the human boy and an over active imagination you get a lot of creative threats. None of which I have any interest ever acting on."
"Oh, yeah... Course. I mean, I didn't really think..." He laughed it off. You know, though, you could never be too careful; in this day and age it was normal to question something that seemed too good. Like, what if she was a creepy serial killer, and she was just luring him into her web?
...
Nah.
"The mayor wants attacks on the fishing fleet to stop, as well as a reasonable fee for any and all damages that have been incurred within the span of time that this feud has been going on. ... he also apparently wants a date with the Captain of the pirate crew... which will probably be the hard negotiation point for him."
Saph snorted at that, and then paused. "Oh, he's serious. Wow... Really ,uh, aimin' high there, ain't he?"
He listened to her proposal, occasionally tilting his head, and nodding a bit, hand on chin, beard stroking in full sway.
"Well, I mean we could always tell her he's a great listener. For real, though, why not just tell the sap he has a real chance with her if he agrees to the terms, we just can't promise anything."
Overall, he was on board with her proposal. It seemed like the best path for everyone. Maybe they would get out of there without burning this place to the ground after all?
She nodded, "Shoot for the moon. If you miss, you'll land among the stars." She was totally out of his league in any light, but that didn't mean he couldn't try. Maybe the pirate would find his bravery charming and agree to it?
"Well, I mean we could always tell her he's a great listener. For real, though, why not just tell the sap he has a real chance with her if he agrees to the terms, we just can't promise anything."
"I imagine being a great listener among a crew of pirates would probably get you a speedy walk down the plank." She chuckled, sending the papers away to her inventory. "So, we give him the impression that she may be impressed with his readiness to agree to her terms." She nodded, pleased with the idea. "Alright! Let's go!"
---
"Stupid Goblins! Stupid Stupid goblins!"
The negotiations had gone splendidly. In fact, they had gone better than expected! Every one agreed to and shook on the terms with very little griping! The pirate captain had even agreed to go on a date with the mayor! He'd very nearly had a heart attack from joy!
"I'm going to kill every last one of them, bring them back to life, and kill them again!"
There had been a rather nice celebration afterwards, too. All of the people from the village and the pirates had all gathered together at the end of the night for food, drink, and dancing. Shelby had even goaded a dance from the burly pirate who had a thing for Saph! But then.... fire works had happened.
... and her goblin horde that had been lingering up on the hill waiting anxiously for a signal flooded into the town with spears held high and warbling war cries piercing the quiet night air.
Now they were running away with the blazing silhouette of the cozy little fishing village burning away in the background. Somewhere behind there was a small angry mob led by the mayor and the Pirate Captain, who had bonded together in order to seek vengeance against Saph and herself.
Shelby turned to the fleet of Goblins flanking her, flailing her staff at them angrily. "STUPID!"
He was running. She was running. They were running, and the village behind them was on fire.
"Who- the #$^&- Uses fireworks- to celebrate- anymore?" He spoke in between breaths, huffing and grumbling to himself as they went. The X-Man saw torches coming up behind them, and listened as he heard the sound of swords meeting spears. The goblins had peeled off to cut off the pirates and villagers.
"Well, we don't gotta tell em to go away! To the mine?"
As he hurried, he felt the first drop of rain plop down on his forehead.
Within seconds, it was a downpour. Saph cursed and sped up, looking to the right. "Over there!" He pointed to a small cave opening. "C'mon!"
They made it to the cave, soaked to the bone. Saph turned and looked to Shelby, grinning at what the water had done to her white dress. "Great choice there, Darlin. Really like how it brings out your eyes."
He waggled his eyebrows, retrieving his sword from his inventory, and lighting up the small cave. "Now, what do we have here?"
"Well, we don't gotta tell em to go away! To the mine?"
"To the mine!" She agreed heartily, picking up the drooping bits of her skirt so she could run faster. Unfortunately for them it started to rain, which quickly turned into a down pour. She cursed up a storm as she attempted to shield her glasses from the flurry water droplets.
"Over there!" He pointed to a small cave opening. C'mon!"
She followed after him with haste and by the time she made it inside she was drenched. From her head to her toes there wasn't a dry patch on her. She scowled at her skirts, attempting to ring the heavy fabric out at first before giving up completely. "Oh, har har." She snarked back, sticking her tongue out at him as he grinned at her. "My eyes are up here."
Still, she smiled back and set about crawling out of the dress, which now felt like it weighed a hundred more pounds then before. Water weight mechanics of the game were pretty accurate, if a little over board. Once she rid herself of the dress she found herself simple corset and a pair of fluffy white shorts. Undergarments of the time. It seemed like they were the default underwear when you unequipped all other clothing items. Neat! The funny part was that her previous default armor had shown less skin then the things she was supposedly wearing underneath it. Video game logic at it's best.
She joined him a moment later, wringing excess water from her hair. The light from his sword lit up the walls of the cave quite well, and from what she could see they had found themselves in a decently sized cave. There was an opening before them that seemed to trail off for a while. It was dark, so she couldn't see exactly how far it went. However, at the very edge of the darkness she could see something glinting in the light Saph was producing. She squinted and took a step toward it. "What's that?"
Unbeknownst to her, her foot tripped a wire stretched tightly across the width of the cave. A razor sharp guillotine blade dislodged from the ceiling with a loud click, heading directly for the both of them.
A look of hope and excitement soured when she took off the white dress and was MORE clothed than before, he took a seat and pressed his elbow on to his knee, resting his face on his chin. He grumbled something along the lines of 'figures', and watched as she explored a bit.
There was a sudden click, and his eyes widened. Before he thought much a bout it, he was springing forward. A hand reached out to catch a chained blade flying at his date. It looked cool, to be honest, his gauntlet bearing right hand gripped the blade effortlessly, as it would in real life.
He looked down to her, grinning widely. "Just saved your life."
Unlike real life, though, this was a game, and something that dealt damage on contact was touching him.
His life bar steadily dropped, and suddenly his legs felt weak. "The... hell"
Poof! He fell over, and his ghost floated above his body. "Really? Son of a @#^$&! Resurrect me or something! NOT AS A ZOMBIE!"
She hardly noticed the trap until Saph sprang into action. She may have screamed out of surprise, then. Even in 2D games she wasn't terribly good at handling surprises.
"Just saved your life."
She gaped at him with the kind of horror written on her face that only a veteran RPG player could muster. He was holding the blade! THE BLADE! Before her eyes his health bar was steadily depleting and she couldn't really muster up the words to yell at him to drop it.
"The... hell"
Shelby slapped a hand to her face, sighing deeply as her boyfriend died and collapsed at her feet in a pile. "One rule to keep in mind in games like this is not to touch anything that can damage you for any longer than necessary. They tend to constantly drain your health the longer you mess with them." She'd learned that the hard way herself quite a few times in similar types of games. Friggen traps and area spells would get her all the time! She poked at his body absently, grinned and lifted her staff..
"Really? Son of a @#^$&! Resurrect me or something! NOT AS A ZOMBIE!"
The grin slipped off her face and the staff dropped back to her side. She muttered something about him being a spoil sport as she fished out a phoenix stone out of her inventory. "Fine! No zombie Saph." Tossing the stone at his corpse, there was a bright flash of light and a short resurrection animation... which was weird seeing in what was technically real life. She sent her staff away to her inventory and waited for him to fully come back before she tackled the man and planted a kiss on his lips.
"Thanks for saving me~"
Peeling herself off after a bit, she turned back toward the entrance to the dark cave and chose a fairy spell from her list. It brought a small floating bulb of light into existence, which floated around her lazily. "So, looks like we stumbled across a dungeon of some sort." She headed toward the thing she'd seen glittering before, careful to avoid any further traps (which there were many of).
The glinting light came from a stature settled against a wall at the very back of the tunnel. It looked as though it was a dead end, seeing as there was a solid wall behind the stone. Carefully she examined it, poking and prodding at the various gems embedded in the stone. Settled in the very center of its chest was a large glittering sapphire, and in it's palm a large ruby. She fixated on the ruby, or rather the hand holding it. It looked almost mechanical....
"I think.... I think this might be a lever. I bet it opens up the wall behind this statue!" Grinning, she turned and looked at Saph quickly, before reaching out and grasping the hand of the statue. It clanked loudly as she pushed down on it.
"I'll bet we're--"
And then the floor opened up under her, dropping her into a large, pitch black shoot under her feet. She shrieked, but didn't have very far to fall before she landed in a large pile of prickly hay. When she scrambled back out of it, she looked up and noticed that there was a ladder leading up to the opening, and a lever in the wall next to it. "...The heck?"
Losing control of yourself during a reanimation animation was a bit unnerving. He grumbled angrily until she planted a kiss on his lips, causing the corner of his mouth to lift a bit.
"Any time..." He wandered after her, scratching the back of his head goofily. They came to a fancy statue, Saph eyed it with mild interest before turning around and walking to a tapestry he saw on the far wall. "Huh... buncha big green guys on this... Wonder what those are. Look like a good fight."
The X-Man blinked as he felt something funny happen in her direction, and turned to look, seeing a pit where she was standing.
"Shelby!" He turned and hobble-ran to the hole, looking down at her. Whew, it was just a pay pitfall. For the third time in almost rapid succession, he pointed and laughed at her.
A short hop later he was standing near her, looking down the path before them. "Looks ominous. You go first." He grinned, holding out his sword, and walking forward anyway.
She shook a grumpy fist as him, brushing residual straw from her as he hopped down to join her. Her little fairy light lit up enough of the tunnel for her to see a little ways out in front of her. She was thankful for the added light when his fire sword came out and helped to light their way. She shot him a dirty look when he motioned for her to go ahead, but stuck her nose up in the air, huffed, and went ahead with it anyway. Her staff came back out as they walked, as she wanted to be overly cautious from now on. She certainly didn't want to fall into any more holes!
A few pit traps, hidden blades, flame thrower nozzles, one angry mimic and a level gained later, they were standing before a closed, heavy stone door. It was the other direction left short of turning back the way that came. Shelby, who was more than a little singed and scuffed up, quickly downed an health potion to try and recover some of her bar. She glanced at Saph, who was a little worse for wear than her, and offered one of the bottles to him too. "Damn mimics. Programmers always make them the hardest creatures to beat in dungeons like this. Over powered, I say!"
She turned back to the door, reaching out to grasp the metal handle. This was probably the exit from the dungeon, and would lead them back up to the surface. From there they'd just have to head over to the mines... if it had stopped raining, of course. She pulled, and the noise from the stone door grating on the floor filled the tunnel.
When she stepped through the other side, she froze on the spot with a squeak. The room beyond was well lit and packed full of orcs. Big ones, small ones, some dressed casually and some in full armor. They all turned collectively to stare in surprise at the the goblin who had intruded on their dinner, and the human male behind her. Little had they known that they had accidentally come in through the back entrance of the dungeon, and thus stumbled across the boss of this particular area quicker than they had been intended too.
Said boss, who slowly got up from his human-bone chair, reached for a large jagged sword that was longer than he was and barked out a deep, rumbling laugh. He said something, which she didn't understand, before pointing the weapon at them. The rest of the Orcs roared in agreement, and all reached for a weapon of some sort.
Traps. So many traps! Somehow being second in line was the worst idea; Shelby kept triggering things and they would hit him! By the time they'd gained a level, he was at half health. Luckily, the level gained filled his life bar. He picked a knightly looking ability, and forged onward. Clicks were making him nervous at this point, especially if it involved flames. He wasn't a fan of fire, even if it was fake.
By the time they stopped again, he was barely alive. He took the potion from her happily, drinking the substance-less light until his life bar was full again. "Who puts teeth on a treasure chest, anyway? Too many killjoys out there, I tell ya."
She moved to open a stone door, talking to her about something or other as she did so, and stopping mid-sentence as they were suddenly face to face with a room full of baddies. Big green orcs. They were mostly sitting and eating at this point, but their leader was barking orders at them already.
Before he even thought on it much, he jumped into action, using his leap ability to fling himself onto the nearest table, and use his spin attack ability. He took out the whole table with a surprise attack bonus, yelling loudly as he went. "HRAAAAAA!"
This would not be an easy fight. These enemies were the real deal.
He clashed swords with a big angry looking orc in armor, parrying his attack and shoving his sword in the big green beast's face. He then steered the flailing orc into the lance of a charging foe, using cleave to attack both it and the enemy next to it. He was on a roll, at least!
Saph flew in like the battle machine he was, and she was more than happy to attack from behind as he drew all of the orcs to him like angry, green murder moths to a flame of justice. The moment he took down a group of them, she had a spell lined up to bring those beasties back, but on their side this time! Her newly resurrected recruits joined the fray, rushing back to her to act as a blockade as she started flinging spells left and right. She hit Saph with one or two of them, too. A few well places buffing spells that would raise a few of his stats and make him even more of a menace to the Orcs.
A few of them splintered off to try and break through her zombie!wall, but she focused on raising more of the dead orcs in Saph's wake. She had a handful of them up and helping with the attack before one of the aggro Orks broke through her line and came at her. She flung herself out of the way with a squeal as a giant, barbed club smashed the ground where she had been standing. Shelby chugged a mana potion as quick as she could, before unleashing her phantom hand sending a flurry of attacks at her attacker. He was a much higher level than she was, and apparently had a ridiculously high HP because her attacks were only taking little notches of health off of him one at a time. She abandoned that idea really quick, deciding to instead pull a few of the zombies in the room back to her and sending them at her attacker in full force. They swarmed in, hitting and clawing and biting, while she made a neat escape to a different side of the room that was less ork filled.
Meanwhile, the largest of the Orks, the king as it were, was lumbering toward Saph. He was huuuge, and covered from head to toe in battered, well used metal armor. A belt decorated with the skulls of his enemies was looped around his thick waist. Large red encrusted canines glinted as the king grinned and raised his giant sword over his head, aiming to bring it down and smash the paladin and any unfortunate orks who happened to be around him at the time....
Apparently they were a level or so down at this point. His surprise attack had been his best success thus far, everything after that was more of a challenge. He was surrounded; only skillful dodges and reliance on his sixth sense prevented him from dying almost immediately. He swung his sword about when he got the chance, threw holy fire into the path behind him, and then felt the big boss swinging in time to launch himself to the side with some stored kinetic energy.
Saphirus rolled to his feet just as a zombie was resurrected behind him. It kept the pressure off of him while he drank a potion, and caught his breath. He gave a thumbs up as some buffs flew his way. The big boss was headed his way again. He opted to use his newest ability, ducking his head down, and charging just as a holy light surrounded him.
He bowled over two large orcs and smacked into the bosses leg. The giant monster stumbled, ending up flat footed. Saph spun and swung his sword into big boss's calf. He still managed to stay standing. Saph's eyes widened as he raised his sword to block the response his attack prompted.
The next thing he knew he was flying through the air, landing against the wall and falling to his feet. "Jees, he hits hard..." Two other orcs were not so lucky.
"You get any new cool spells that might pull us outa this mess?!"
She skidded to a stop beside him, eyeballing her zombie minions as they fought valiantly to keep a few of the orcs at bay. "Apparently." She glanced at his health bar, tossing another HP bottle at him as she skimmed through her spells list.
"I might have a few things... but i'm going to need you to cover for me if I attempt them." She glanced at him, gave a thumbs up and hit the first spell. It was another buff for him, something that effectively doubled his damage. She downed another mana potion, one that would gradually refill her bar for a short period of time and chose another spell. A beating, cartoon-y heart appeared in her hands, she turned to hand it to Saph. "Put this in your inventory!" She didn't have time to really explain what it did, exactly, seeing as the large orc had jerked his sword back out of the stone and was lumbering toward them slowly. She chose one last passive spell, which would leech health from all of the remaining zombies she controlled, gradually filling up her health bar as it did so. She was counting on it working, seeing as if this went right there might be a short period of time where she would have to take a few hits without being able to defend herself.
"Alright..." She chose her attack spell, sending her staff away to her inventory and lifted her hands to point both at the Orc King. A red aura enveloped her, and when she had the orc in her sights the spell activated.
Giant black, rusty chains lurched from the stone all around the large beast, latching on and curling around him like tentacles. He was effectively trapped, unable to move for as long as she was able to maintain the position and her mana. "Go go go! You have a limited amount of time to take him down before this wears off! I buffed you with a spell to double your damage, and that heart should refill your health slowly for a limited time!"
She kept a careful eye on the big guy, as well as the few remaining orcs who were rushing toward them around him. It would only take a few hits before her health depleted... it had to be timed just right!
She did a lot. Adrenaline was pumping. He took the heart she gave him and shoved it into his inventory. He got the gist of it all; he had to deal as much damage as he could as quick as he could.
A grin appeared on his face as made chains lash out to hold the king, who growled and struggled in protest. Saph cast his holy flames again, but instead chose his sword as the target, thinking about what she'd told him before about things making contact and doing damage in game worlds. This was a contact damage spell, so placing it on his sword and hitting someone would hurt a bunch, right?
Saph dove forward, taking a few hits from random orcs as he went. He reached the boss, and started letting loose, swinging blindly and with all of the ferocity he could manage. A crit hit had the orc King erupt in bright golden flames, but Saph just kept swinging until the chains fell to the ground, unable to find something solid to grip onto.
The X-Man sunk to his knees, exhausted from the effort required to swing such a big sword so fast. The orcs were closing in on him... He let out a fierce growl at them, which gave two of the green warriors pause. Smart.
As the rest neared, he dove to the side, grabbing the king's weapon, and swinging the entirely too large sword with all of his might. Not on of the closing orcs remained.
Now it was just Mop up, right? He'd definitely gained a level or two after that.
