After the birthday and Christmas gifts were received from Maya and Gawain Twyla had thought long and hard about the best way to return the gesture. It wouldn’t be easy to re-gift the feelings she’d felt when she saw the hairpins on her desk but surprising someone who liked to dance with a night of clubbing seemed like a good start. New Year’s Eve seemed like the perfect night to impalement her plan so on December 31st a note was sent to Maya’s room via one of the younger kids and it read:
‘Meet me in the foyer at 10oclock New Years Eve night. Prepare for an all-nighter. Dress to impress. -Bubblegum’
The ‘dress to impress’ part was kinda silly and not really necessary but Twyla felt like she needed to warn her not to wear sweats or something. The plotting blonde wasn’t dressed in sweats, not even close. Her brothers had sent her a pair of new silver Nikes and the day after Christmas she had braved the sales to find something to match them with the money her sisters had pooled together and sent her. Maybe it was a little weird to match a pair of tennis shoes with a dress but Twyla didn’t really care, if she was going to dance all night she wanted to be comfortable. And the plan was to dance all night. Hence the ‘prepare for an all-nighter’ line, just in case there were some...girl/boy issues that would need to be planned for. She had also kept in mind the gender switching when she picked out the clubbing club in question–Club Evolution was a mutant club, so hopefully there wouldn’t be any major problems or a major scene if Maya came out of the bathroom looking like Gawain. Twyla still wasn’t really sure how that whole deal worked, but she attempted to cover her bases.
The night of Twyla had spent a few hours curling her hair, coating it was mega-amounts of hair spray and applying, washing off, and reapplying her glittery make-up. She really didn’t know what to expect, having never gone to a club before, but she felt confident in her look when as she waited in the foyer wearing her winter coat over the dress and carrying a red scarf that had more devious plans than those of warming a neck. It wouldn’t be a surprise after all if Maya could see their destination from the bus window, now would it? Maya had traipsed down the stairs right on time and then she was promptly blindfolded and carefully led to the bus that had just arrived on the corner.
Things went very smoothly on the bus ride into the city and Twyla managed to parry all of the other girl’s questions with vague answers and a lot of ‘Oh, I don’t know’s. Maya was led off of the bus and into the line for the club that would be opening for a New Years party in a few minutes. The bass from the music inside could be heard from the sidewalk and Twyla decided that it would be acceptable to remove the scarf from her friend’s face. She smiled when hazel eyes were no longer obscured by red materiel. “Surprise!” The teen half shouted, causing several other patrons to turn and look at her. She shoved the scarf in the pocket of her coat and moved so that the other girl could see the sign above the door. “Happy New Year!” She waited for Maya’s reaction and hoped that she hadn’t done something totally stupid or lame. It had seemed like a good idea at the time but it was always hard to tell how someone else might react. She had never, after all, surprised someone by taking them to a club before.

Prepare for an all-nighter. That one single sentence plastered a wide grin over Mirror's face. Dress to impress. That one wiped it off. December 31st was Maya-day.
It was official: Maya had never, ever spent as much time preparing for a night out as she did now, not even if you put all of her previous nights out together, and add Gawain's too. The better part of her day was spent doing all kinds of girly stuff she'd never bothered with before, and what was left was spent staring into space and grinning like mad. Gotta work on the feminine side. That was the conclusion after hours of 'dressing to impress', which was a fairly new concept for Tomboy Maya. Get something to dress into. Good thing mirrors made 'running downtown' a lot faster. Check. Shower. Check. Hair. Check. Make-up. Maya didn't do make-up. She wondered if she should. Problem was, once she changed into Gawain, it was a pain in the *** to scrub it off. Could ask Twyla for suggestions later. Packing a backpack for Gawain. Check. Show me any other gal who's gotta prepare for a night out for two people instead of one. Blah. Rock 'n' roll.
When she walked downstairs, Maya was dressed in jeans (that's the line right there. No way I'm wearing a friggin' dress), comfortable shoes and a top that made her feel more than half naked (the feeling had something to do with the fact Maya still didn't own a bra). Covered with pullovers and a jacket, for the time being. Her backpack flung over her shoulder, she was good to go. Alos, when she saw Bubblegum, the breath caught in her throat. She was wearing a coat too, and Maya found she was very eager to find out what was underneath. She let Twyla blindfold her without asking - she was too much of a trickster to ruin any surprises. The Gawain side of her brain had some additional comments about blindfolding, but that part had been in the gutter ever since she got the note, so she ignored the ideas that flashed through her brain. Bus ride. Hmm. Downtown. Maya let herself be guided by Twyla's hand. She trusted the girl, crush or no crush, she was one of the very few people in the world she would trust with her life. She was also curious, child-opening-her-Christmas-present curious, and she enjoyed it.

Blinking and squinting, Maya looked around, and her jaw dropped. Club Evolution?... She'd heard it mentioned before. It started to dawn on her that Bubblegum just took the initiative in realizing their plans about going clubbing together. And she found the perfect place too. "Wow. Ya're the best, Bubblegum." she grinned, ear to ear, and looked down at Twyla. She looked excited, and cheerful, and adorable. Two hours till Gawain's shift. Blast it. I could soo kiss her now. Laughing, Maya looked around, at all the other people in the line; some of them were looking at them. Some of them were visibly mutants. Some of them were guys. Ooops.
They didn't get stopped at the door. Maya was not used to going to clubs through the front entrance, and was a bit worried about getting in, but apparently on New Year's Eve nobody wanted to keep two pretty girls away from the party. The bouncer asked her to open the backpack, and didn't even raise an eyebrow at the boy clothes. Makes sense. In a place frequented by mutants shifting is probably nothing they haven't seen before...
There was music inside, and the beat went right up through her feet and into her bones. Taking Twyla by the hand in order not to loose her in the crowd, she leaned closer. "Have you been here before?..." she had to almost shout to hear her own voice. She looked around for a place to leave their coats and the backpack, before they could go and dance the night away...

Maya’s reaction was perfect–her jaw even dropped. Going to the club had been a good plan after all. Twyla was glad that her plans hadn’t flopped liked she’d been imagining on the bus ride to the city. “I know I am.” She rolled her eyes at her own conceited tone and her grin matched the other girl’s. A few people were looking at them now, probably due to the outbursts and the laughter coming from their spot in line. Twyla made eye contact with a few of the onlookers and smiled–she really didn’t care about the extra attention, she was at Club Evolution for one reason and that reason didn’t include anyone but the girl with the dark hair standing next to her in line.
The line started moving a moment later and soon Twyla and Maya were through the door–the bouncer didn’t even look at them when he stamped their hands...which was probably best considering Twyla hadn’t thought of the age restrictions that she was pretty sure some clubs had. Maybe it was some New Year’s luck that got them through the door or maybe it was just that it was New Year’s Eve and every mutant and their mutie mom seemed to want to get into the club. The later explanation was probably closer to the truth.
When they got through the door two things happened to Twyla’s body: her ears were assaulted by the loud music and the bass from said music traveled through her bones, making her feet antsy to follow the rhythm. She could barely hear her companion over the beats. A few giggles escaped as she replied to the question. “No, I’ve never done anything like this before!” Still holding onto the hand that Maya put in hers, Twyla followed a group in front of them that appeared to be getting rid of their coats. “I think this is where we put our coats.” It was a little easier to talk in the room near the door that was designated for personal affects.
She didn’t drop the other girl’s hand until they were both in the semi-crowded room. Very carefully, so as not to hit anyone with a wayward arm or elbow, Twyla undid the mass of buttons on her coat and slid out of it. It was then, as she clutched the bulky thing to her chest that she realized that the dress she had searched an entire day for was as short as her coat. It was true that it was a bit more daring than most of her clothing but this was a special occasion and besides, how can someone complain about a dress that had been on clearance for $3? Thriftiness was one of Twyla's virtues. Throwing the jacket away from her suddenly Twyla did a little twirl, enjoying the way the sequins on the silver dress sparkled as she did so. “I got this for three bucks, can you believe it?”

Oh, this is gonna be good. Maya was not new to clubbing, not by a long shot, even though she'd never been to Evolution. If Bubblegum was a beginner... well, she'll just have to teach her a thing or two. Following the crowd, they found a place to get rid of the coats and the backpack. Maya found a corner to leave her stuff, and made sure it was out of the way... and when she turned back to Twyla, her jaw dropped. Again.

Are ya tryin' to friggin' kill me?!...
"Wow." she breathed, the trademark grin spreading on her face again. She glanced around; Twyla was cheerful and sparkly, it's only natural she attracted attention. Attention Maya (and Gawain) did not approve of. You'd better not be starin' at her.
Taking off the pullover and tossing it onto her backpack, Maya was ready to party. "Stay close, Bubblegum, or I'll never find ya again" she warned as she took her hand - only to keep her close, crowds could be a real pain, and a New Year's crowd was even worse, especially when a girl looked so pretty as Twyla. Walking back into the booming music with Bubblegum in tow, her body started to move with the rhythm. It was early for everyone to be on the dance floor - so it was only nearly everyone, with the rest hanging around the bar. She turned to Twyla, preparing to ask 'drink first, or dance first?' but she realized it would be impossible to yell above the music, so she made the decision herself. Twirling Bubblegum around, she let her go, allowing her to start dancing on her own. Girls' night out.

Twyla didn’t notice that she caused the other girl to drop her jaw (for the second time) as her spin made her quite oblivious to most things around her. She did hear the ‘wow’ though, sparkles did nothing to distract her ears. “I love sales.” The comment was more to herself than anything, and it was very truthful considering back home her family’s version of clothing shopping was to go through cousins closets before hitting the Good Will. While there was nothing bad about these methods, Twyla loved the chance to own something a bit newer, even if it was marked down because it was ‘so last season’.
The girl allowed herself to be led out of the coatroom. Heedful of Maya’s warning, she stuck close and her grip on the other girl’s hand didn’t waver in the slightest. The music hit her again with full force as the moved farther out onto the dance floor and when Maya released her with a bit of a spin Twyla was ready.
The feeling was the same–from competitions to rocking out in her room and it started out slow like it always did whenever Twyla began to dance. First she started to feel the beat in her bones, it traveled down to her feet and they slowly picked up the rhythm of the unfamiliar song. It was almost a little awkward, dancing in a room crowded with unfamiliar people and Twyla was taking her time getting into the music. Her movements were simple and half hesitant, reflecting her awkward mood. Keeping her arms close Twyla swayed to the left and right while her feet followed her shoulders back and forth. She moved in closer to Maya so she could attempt to be heard about the people and the speakers. “How many people do you think are here?”She tried her hardest to keep her tone blase and unaffected. Even with the close proximity Twyla had to half shout to hear herself.
You’re nothing important to them, chill out. After looking around at the sea of faces on the dance floor Twyla realized that no one was watching her. This realization helped her to relax slowly into the pattern of the music.
For the first time in her life, Maya had to remind herself to keep moving. On a dance floor. What the heck. The music was good, and the beat was resonating in her bones, and there was enough space to dance, but she found herself staring at Twyla instead. That dress was overkill.
I love sales too.
The music finally caught up to her thoughts, and she started to sway, and dance. It took her a few minutes to find the right kind of dance and settle into it - hey, Mirror had to know how to dance as Maya, how to dance as Gawain, plus there was always the street-kinda dancin', the one Bubblegum called 'pulling stunts', and several others. Tonight, at least for a couple of more hours, she was Maya, and she had to go with that. Better make the most of it. Once that dilemma was solved, it took her no time at all to really start dancing.

She barely heard the words, and she had to lean in closer to listen. Looking around, Maya shrugged; she didn't even know how big this place really was.
"Enough to make a crowd" she yelled back with a grin, and spun around, following the music. From the corner of her eyes, she could see some guys looking at them. No wonder. Two lonely girls, dancing in a club, dressed as they were... bound to attract some attention. Maya grinned the Trickster's true grin, and kept dancing. Bring it on.

Twyla grinned at the other girl’s reply, finally letting herself really get into the music. Brown eyes were almost glazed over as her moves became more confident and her arms went above her head as if she were trying to dance with the ceiling. It was the best feeling in the world, dancing. She was starting to feel pretty good when: “Hey cutie, is beauty your mutation?” A man’s voice came from behind and Twyla could feel the heat of a body too close to her own. Twirling around she was faced with the chest of a probably twenty-something young man with bad facial hair and a smile that almost made up for the awkward soul patch. The cherubic grin did not make up for the bad line or the creepy looks she was getting from his friend behind him and Twyla took a step back, closer to Maya.
“Um, excuse me?” She was momentarily stunned, this was majorly weird. ‘Does not compute.’ Flashed across the screen in her brain and mini-Twyla’s frantically searched through their memory databases to find some experience with this kind of confrontation. Fight or flee? “Actually, my mutation is that I’ve got radar for sensing creeps. It’s kinda tweaking out right now.” A surge of confidence at the words coursed through her veins and Twyla placed her hands on her hips in a defiant gesture. Maybe her comeback was a little stupid and juvenile, but she was proud of herself for not totally shutting down. “Is it just me, or do you get creeper* vibes too, Maya?” She turned to the girl next to her.
Sadly, Awkward-Soul-Patch-Man didn’t whither at her tone, in fact his eyes flashed as if he was rising to some challenge. Creepy creeper alert!
((OOC:* I know ‘creeper’ might be weird sounding but it was the first thing out of my brain. At my school if someone isn’t ‘cool’ or ‘normal’ or whatever we call them a ‘creeper’. It’s weird and I don’t get it but I often call creepers creepers, Just a random side note! ))
Ouch. Worst. Pick-up. Line. Ever. Maya stopped dancing to stare at the guys. Of course, they thought she was free prey. Dead wrong, fellas, she's mine. ... Oh, great. Get a freakin' grip, Maya.

Maya blinked. Sure as hell she did not expect that from Bubblegum. Whoa, the girl knew how to pick a fight. She'd told her she was new to clubbing, but to not know about some basic rules on how to not get into a fight... Maya knew those rules. She needed to know them to ignore them. Most of the time.

Okay, so this was getting all kinds of amusing. Maya's lips twitched at the look on their faces. Stepping up next to Twyla, she instinctively put an arm around her shoulders as she flashed a charming grin at the creeper crew.
"Sorry guys, ya're barkin' up the wrong tree here. It's girls' night out. Nothin' personal." she added with a wink as she pulled Twyla away from them.
Also, be very very grateful I'm not Gawain right now.

Phew. Crisis averted. At least that’s what it felt like when Maya placed an arm around her shoulders and led her away from Talking-Creep and Silent-Creep. Twyla didn’t hear any especially exciting things from behind her so she assumed that the guys had given up. She was giddy with the confrontation and as soon as she took a few steps the girl in the sequined dress began to giggle hysterically. Ducking out from under the other girl’s arm Twyla stood in front of her and leaned in close so she could be heard. “Oh my god, I’ve never done anything like that before!” Excitement colored her tone. “I’ve never been talked to like that before really either...was he hitting on me or something, you think?” Twyla shuddered at the thought.
If dealing with things like that was what it was going to take to get a significant other Twyla decided that she’d rather die an old maid, surrounded by her hundreds of cats and the doilies she spent all her time making. Her siblings would have enough kids between the five of them that she’d always have the chance to babysit. The best part about nieces and nephews was that she’d be able to return them and as soon as they got all pimply and gross she could love them from afar. Twyla could definitely become a spinster if it meant peace from creeper guys.
She felt like if she turned around she’d see Soul-Patch-Man so Twyla leaned in again to ask: “Do you want to get something to drink?”
Maya was very grateful the creeps decided to give up. It was almost too easy to be true. Maybe they were shocked at Twyla's little speech too. Taking about Twyla...

... she looked positively excited about the whole thing. Not to mention adorable. Maya grinned at her, leaning in to hear what she was saying (even though it was no trouble at all, she was quite loud), and then laughed out. Really laughed.
"Ya're really somethin', Bubblegum. Way to impress a gentleman." she nodded "Yeah they were hittin' on ya. Ya'r creep radar is excellent."
It really was. Maya learned to pick out people like that from miles away, before they could put their hands were they didn't belong, because if they did, Maya rarely walked out of a club through the front door. Or unhurt. But this was different, now she was with Twyla, and damned if she'd let any creep ruin their night, or even think about putting a finger on the girl. Damned.

She nodded. It sounded like a plan. Give the creeps some time to get lost in the crowd.
"Yeah, sure. C'mon." Taking her hand again, Maya made her way across the dance floor to the bar. Once she found tow empty bar stools, she sat, and turned back to Twyla "Name your poison."

The giggles intensified so much and were amplified by so much of Maya’s laughter that a few dancers turned to look at the girls’ conversation. Twyla shrugged it off–she was still all in a tizzy about the confrontation. “That guy was not a gentleman, but my people skills are so awesome, right?”She rolled her eyes and flipped her curled hair in a vain gesture. Usually she’d have stammered something and tried to sneak out of a situation similar to the one she and Maya had just been in, not that she’d ever been hit on like that, but for whatever reason something snapped inside of her and Twyla liked the feeling she got from talking back. It was a new and exciting rush to stand up for herself. This feeling showed in her face and with the light in her eyes. “Let’s just hope that []never[/I] happens again. Yuck.” Another shudder at the thought of being talked to like that again.
Seriously, whatever happened to shy glances across a room, love letters, poems, reading romantic passages from good books? So Twyla was a little old fashioned, she blamed it on the books she read, but still...was it too much to ask that the lines used on her were at least a little creative?
Twyla allowed herself to again be led around the club–this time to the busy bar. By some miracle two bar stools were found and she dutifully took her place next to Maya. Her cheeks flushed a bit when she was asked what she drank because she interpreted that the question had to do with drinking alcohol. “Water.” An embarrassed chuckle. “I don’t actually drink alcohol. I’m not gonna say I haven’t drank before but...I don’t know. I’ve seen too many people do stupid stuff after a few beers to bother.” She paused and then added. “Really, really stupid stuff....That’s just me though.” A shrug so as not to seem holier-than-thou if Maya drank. When there wasn’t much to do it seemed like all her friends thought it was a good plan to go to a drinking party–especially during late summer into the football season. It was like they got stir-crazy or something and just had to find someone’s older brother who could buy them a keg. Twyla had been to a few of these parties (she avoided them when possible), she’d even discovered her powers at one, but she’d never really been comfortable with making a fool of herself in public and she was a lightweight so it wasn’t too hard for her to get foolish.

Maya couldn't have agreed more. Let's hope no one else ever... Yeah. Very likely indeed.
"Ya'll get used to it" she grinned as they sat on the bar stools "Every time ya'd think they can't come up with anything worse than that line, they manage to..."
And they insist on using them too, on girls who were half-guys and girls who were... Twyla. Losers. >>“Water.”
Blink. Maya made a funny face, now that was a first. Water? Seriously?...
>>“I don’t actually drink alcohol. I’m not gonna say I haven’t drank before but...I don’t know. I’ve seen too many people do stupid stuff after a few beers to bother. Really, really stupid stuff....That’s just me though.”
Maya smirked. She thinks she'd seen stupid?... Cute. She managed to be cute, again. That didn't change the rules though, there was no way in hell Maya would let her drink friggin' water on a new year's eve. Not in a club, no.
"C'mon Bubblegum." she shook her head in disbelief "I thought ya'd be smarter than that, one doesn't drink water in a place like this, it's not healthy" she said in a very serious tone, although a smile kept pulling on the corner of her mouth "Ya don' need to drink alcohol, but that doesn' mean ya've got to stick to water. Hey!"
That last part was aimed at the bartender, who finally got down along the line to them, so it was their turn to order. "Could ya please make a Cinderella for my girl here please, and... another one for me?" And she added a disarming smile too.
So much about drinking shots like she usually did. If Twyla's not drinking, Maya's not drinking. Bubblegum was right about people doing stupid things after all.

A weird face was given in response to the mini-rant about alcohol before Maya went on to tell her that water in a club was not good to drink...although how serious she was could be debatable considering she looked like she was having a particularly hard time keeping a straight face. Twyla shrugged, a bit embarrassed and feeling more than a little naive and unworldly–the closest she’d been to a real club was in movies up until that night and she obviously had no idea how things worked in a place like Club Evolution.
A bartender was summoned and something called a ‘Cinderella’ was ordered for both of them. Twyla tried to look nonchalant as she sat on the stool waiting for the man slinging the drinks to finish theirs. A moment later something orange-ish was placed in front of her on top of a napkin and it had a slice of orange on the rim. “Cheers.” She rolled her eyes and giggled as she clinked her glass with Maya’s. It seemed silly saying ‘cheers’ with virgin drinks but it had already slipped out by the time Twyla realized there were a million cooler things to say. Oh well, no use crying over spilt Cinderella.
Twyla took a sip from the straw peeking out next to the orange slice. The orangey liquid tasted very citrus-y and the girl decided she liked it so she took a larger sip the second time. “This is totally random, but I absolutely hated the movie Cinderella when I was little. I thought it was so dumb that she hung out with the prince once and they were suddenly in mega-super-fantastic-over-the-moon-love. I was five and sitting there like ‘You don’t even know if he likes the Packers or not’. ” A pause as she digested what she just said. “Sorry, that was random–the name of the drink and all that.” A shrug, if Maya didn’t already know she was kinda weird it was better for her to find out sooner rather than later.
"Cheers." Maya grinned, and she didn't mind at all that this time there was no alcohol in her drink. ... All right, so maybe she did. A tiny little bit. But hey, if she decided she had to chose between the usual going-wild party and a nice night out with Twyla, alcohol could pack and go straight to hell. Remembering things was always a bonus.

Maya laughed, and almost spat out Cindy in the process. Almost. Almost's good.
"I hear ya, Bubblegum" she grinned, stirring the mocktail with the straw "Disney does that a lot. But let me tell ya, my money's on the Prince not likin' the Packers, at least not in an appropriate way..." she giggled, leaning against the bar.

“Disney princesses never seem to have their heads on straight. It’s always ‘Save me, I love you!’. It’s so ridiculous.” Twyla rolled her eyes and took another drink of her...drink. I was pretty good, she had to admit–props to Maya for picking it.
“I always really liked ‘Sleeping Beauty’ just because he meets her before he knows she’s a princess and all that. Neither of them know the other one is royalty and they hit it off anyway. I always thought it was cool... ‘The Princess and the Frog’ I liked for pretty much the same reason and when I was little I used to have a thing for frogs.” An embarrassed smile when she realized what her statement could be implied as. “My brother and I used to collect them, I mean.” Not very often though, the Ashby farm wasn’t anywhere near any water sources. The only time Twyla and Nate got to catch frogs was in the summer when they stayed with their grandma in town, she lived a block away from the Mississippi and prime hunting grounds.
Twyla swivelled on the stool so she could face Maya and then did it again because she thought it was fun. “What about you, favorite fairytale?” It’d be interesting to see if Maya related to any of the heroines in the typical damsel in distress stories or if she didn’t have a favorite story.
