Maya had been a busy lady. Changing over her name, changing over her business, getting things ready for a wedding, and even getting things ready for after the wedding. She was finally going to go to London. She would see the site of her future dream and see if it had any merit. She would also get to see some of Sebastian's history in the form of a house. There were lots of things to learn about a person from where they lived.
Which was a strange thought because at the time, Maya didn't feel as if she "lived" anywhere. Half way between the Mansion and the Iris Clinic was a weird place to be.
The shopping assistant snapped in front of Maya's face bringing her back from her mental tangents.
"Maya, darling, you don't look happy for a lady in a wedding dress."
Involuntarily she wrinkled her nose at the woman. Maya just felt too personal to her. This woman didn't know her well enough to have that privilege. But she just couldn't seem to bear telling the wedding boutique that her name was Ghost. They were all so prim and decorous that she was sure they would have laughed her out of the shop.
Maya inspected herself in the mirror. She was pale. The dress was an off white and had a skirt so full that it looked more like an umbrella than a dress to her.
"I just don't like this one, I guess." It was hard to tell. Really she needed a second opinion, but the list of her female friends was so short that it was actually nonexistent. Well, there was Hymn, but she couldn't rely on a girl who had an unstable mind to tell you if you looked pretty. Maybe she could have helped her know that there were imaginary bats in the room, but not if the color white clashed with her skin.
"I think I'm going to go try on another one. Uhm. If you find more -- can it not be this color? Maybe whiter? And less poofy?"
The woman nodded sympathetically. She'd been the one to suggest Maya not be alone in the dress picking process. Really the only other person she felt she could invite would be Garrett and that would not have been very fair to him.
Getting into a wedding dress is pretty easy if you pretend you're diving and if you have someone there to hold it still. Getting out of a wedding dress wasn't as easy. But it was still do-able. Stupid petticoats.
The next dress was too horrible for words, but at the woman's urging, Maya went to see it in the 180 mirrors anyway. It sort of looked like someone had puked up fabric in strange places, but at least it was white.
>"I LOVE IT"
She'd heard stories about it, seen TV sitcoms with it in there, but she'd never seen it. Not in real life.
>"I have to have it! Take it off!"
Bridezilla. Those women so self-involved and so wrapped up in their delusional wedding plans that they loose all sense of normalcy.
"You can have it. It's ugly." Maya shrugged and hoisted the skirt. She took one step toward the dressing room before she noticed the shopping assistant's surprised eyes.
"Maya--" It was her only warning.
>"It's mine!"
The woman leapt like an animal up onto the tiny stage and in her haste pushed Maya toward the mirrors.
Maya liked places with mirrors. Go figure. Actually, the more mirrors the better, and even among places like that, bridal gown salons were on the top of her list. No, not the Useful Places list. Not even the Fun Places list. Definitely not the Awesome Places list. The list with the Top 10 Places To Prank People. No one freaks like a neurotic bride-to-be. The rest is just popcorn and a seat in the front row.
Walking across the gigantic mirrors in one of New York's biggest salons, slipping from one ecstatic, muffin-wrapped reflection into the other, Maya marveled on the levels of human (female) naivety. There were quite a few curiosities to marvel at. Did they really think those dresses looked good? Did they really think marriage was fun? Did they have some serious mental disorder in connection with colors and shapes?... And just how on earth did that three-ton lady get herself into a size 6 dress? Did someone just say her name?...
>>"Maya, darling, you don't look happy for a lady in a wedding dress."
Mirror shuddered as she slipped into the reflection of another woman - this time the one who was not buying, but selling the dress. She shuddered. That sentence sounded like something out of a nightmare. Not only she never ever wanted to imagine herself in a wedding dress, she was not even planning on becoming a bride. Of any kind, to anyone, in any freakin' universe. Groom, maybe. One day. Bride? Gimme a friggin' break.
She looked at the girl in the dress. She was prettier than she thought, and she obviously was called Maya too. What a coincidence. Mirror slipped into her reflection and mirrored her movements as she examined herself in the mirror(s). She even copied the frown, fully agreeing with the judgment. The dress did look ridiculous. No wonder Other Maya wasn't happy.
Bridezilla came as a surprise. Maya was just about to slip out of her namesake's reflection and be on her way, when a shower of white ribbons and skirts and tangled limbs crashed against the mirror. The fat lady was screeching like some kind of bird of prey, and not the noble kind either. Maya stared, completely forgetting she was supposed to be rolling on the floor as well, as good reflections do. Unbe-friggin'-lievable. She just got herself in the middle of a girl fight. A grin spread on Ghost's mirror-face. Oh, this is all too good to be true.
Planting fragile hands on her hips, she looked down on the two girls still rolling on the floor, and gave Bridezilla a hard glare. In case she looked up. Which she will, in a couple of seconds.
The woman had poor Maya's white hair bunched up in her hand and was pulling. She had come down on her hard taking them both to the ground so that she could sit on Maya's back and pin the slip of a girl to the ground.
>>"What on Earth do you think you are doing, huh?"
She... was delusional. Had she eaten lunch? There was no way this was happening. A woman had attacked her for a disgusting dress and now her reflection was passing judgement on them both. In... not her voice.
"Who are yo--?" Before she was even done talking the barnyard bridezilla was at it again. "Dirty sneaking mutant. You think this is funny? Some of us have weddings to plan." She was shouting again. This woman only seemed to have one setting: loud. And Maya was tired of her already.
All it would take was one quick inhalation. The dress might come with... might not. Maybe pieces of it would? Who knew? She might even loose some of her hair... Hmm. Musn't look bad for the ceremony.
"You know. You are absolutely right."
The bridezilla had opened her mouth to say something mean and nasty, but was distracted since Maya had agreed with her. The inhalation of air seemed to make the woman on top feel heavier. Something was tugging at the woman, probably a friend of store clerk. Any movement was making more and more air push out of Maya's lungs.
Could an air elemental really suffocate? Yes. She'd been strangled before. Of course, Maya could start suffocating the woman on top of her, but... there was no guarantee that when she fell that she wouldn't just fall on her. Plus, it was probably considered rude to randomly asphyxiate people. Not that the woman hadn't already tried to claw Maya's eyes out...
"You know, this dress isn't for me." Maya sounded calm and placating, if a little winded. "Why don't you stand up and let me take it off before something damages it? It wouldn't be wearable it it's damaged."
The logic seemed to be a bit of a stretch for the woman. She was really distracted by the version of Maya in the mirror. Truth be told, Maya was interested in her too. Because it wasn't her.
"Stop with the mirror trick."
Maya blinked as the woman pulled with a fresh vigor on her hair. "I can't."
"Why not?"
Maya made her best 'help me' eyes at her own reflection.
>>"Dirty sneaking mutant. You think this is funny? Some of us have weddings to plan."
Now that was just Not Nice. Maya screwed up her face - well, Other Maya's face, really, hoping it would look as menacing as her own - and watched as the store lady dragged Bridezilla off her namesake. Who had pretty white hair, by the way. And was trying to reason, which must have been quite the challenge with that kinda weight sitting on top of her. She looked very fragile.
>>"Stop with the mirror trick." >>"I can't." >>"Why not?"
Maya sighed and gave Bridezilla another hard glare. This whole mess had to end right there.
"Because, you stupid witch, she is not doing it. I am. I am the ghost of weddings past, and came here today to tell ya you suck on so many levels there are not enough corpse brides in the universe to save your ass. And talkin' about ass, you're gonna need more help to cram yours into that dress. Believe me, I live in mirrors and even I haven't seen a rack like yours, hun. So, why don't ya let go of the lady's hair and walk away before I reach out and drag ya through the looking glass, huh?... And yeah, I might not be homo freakin' sapien, but at least I act like one."
Taking a deep breath after her little speech, she folded her arms, daring anyone in the room to complain. Or utter a word.
"Geez, I have no clue how females like you ever get themselves a groom in the first place." she added on second thought, with honest curiosity.
The... ghost of weddings past? She didn't have a hand to slap her forehead so she contented herself to let her face splat into the carpeted floor when the woman released her hair. And then her burden lightened.
The woman was going toward the mirror and asking it questions about her past husbands and why it hadn't worked out. Maya wasn't listening. She was busy breathing. Glorious breathing.
"You alright, dear?" The clerk was patting her on the shoulder and grabbing her elbow to help her stand.
"Yes. In fact, I think I might be done shopping for today."
Of course the clerk was sorry to hear that and eager to schedule another time. At this point, Maya didn't really care. She hiked up the fountains of putrid cloth and marched to the dressing room and away from the ghost of weddings past, present, and future.
Step one. Try to figure out the lacing in reverse.
Step two. Backstroke out of the frills and froths of chiffon.
Step three. THROW the dress out of her dressing room stall so the crazy lady didn't break down the door to come get it.
There was an answering squeal of delight from the outside world. "Idiocy." The word was a breath. A breath that seemed to sum up her current situation. Ghost caught a glimpse of her ring as she slipped out of the under corset of torturous death and into her normal shirt. She was technically already married. The ceremony was for show since no one had made it to the court date.
When Maya came up with the 'weddings past' part, she wasn't really thinking about how the whole thing would backfire on her. Bridezilla turned out to be not only annoying but also gullible to the extent that kills the joke. When she started asking questions, Maya rolled her eyes.
"Dude, ya're talkin' to a freakin' mirror and ya want me to tell ya what's wrong with y're marriages?! Bugger off."
As soon as Other Maya left the picture, of course the illusion was gone too. Her reflection changed back into that of a slightly annoyed teenage girl in baggy pants, a football sweatshirt three times her size (it was getting cold outside) and a green baseball cap. With all that said and done, she turned around and walked out of the mirror too, just to appear for a moment in the next one, then the one after that, making her way over to the dressing room in no hurry. Bridezilla might have made some kind of comment or half-sob, but as soon as the dream-dress flew out of the changing room all her earthly miseries were gone at once.
>>"Idiocy."
"Couldn't agree more" Maya nodded, leaning against Other Maya's mirror frame casually "Some folks are just too stupid to be worth prankin'."
The mirror talked in that same sassafras tone. "You." Maya grabbed her long skirt and pulled it over her meager hips. She flashed only a little tummy and a little of the large silver scar that resided there. If the skirt didn't have a drawstring, the whole thing probably would have fallen down. Maya was built rather like an ironing board and while dresses looked okay on her, they looked okay on a hangar as well. She wished for curves. Any curves at all.
"You know this is hard enough to do by myself without someone egging the crazies on." Maya didn't get angry often. She wasn't even technically angry now. But there was the potential for it in her voice and stiff movements.
"Augh. I never asked for a wedding anyway." Ghost ran her fingers over her sore scalp. Those pudgy fingers had pulled hard. "So you're gifted. You just hang out in people's mirrors all day waiting for a chance to use their reflections in order to mock them? That's a constructive use of your talents." Maybe she was just grumpy because she'd been sat upon.
Maya gave her scalp one last good scrubbing before she grabbed her jacket. She seemed to completely forget that her shoes were still sitting neatly next to the dressing room door. "Sorry. That was rude. I'll just go."
The dressing room door opened and Maya slipped past a pair of gossiping ladies, a pregnant woman trying on a dress, and the inevitable crazy woman digging through the jewelry to find the perfect tiara.
Maya had made it half way to the door when she saw it.
It had curves all on its own even just hanging there on the plastic hangar. There was texture to the dress because of the lace. And it wasn't an old lady lace either. The dress itself was slightly beige white while the lace as pure a white as her hair. It had a train, but not one long enough to spell disaster. It looked... good.
But would it look good on?
Maya grabbed the hangar and marched back toward the dressing room. "I changed my mind." She told the woman who was gathering up Maya's discarded choices. "I want to try on one more."
"Uh. I'll get you the right undergarment for that."
Maya knocked on the mirror in her dressing room. "Uhm. Excuse me. Mirror girl?" If she saw a lot of people in a lot of different mirrors, she cold maybe give Maya a good opinion about this next choice. Her blunt manner might be an asset in this situation where Maya actually wanted a frank answer rather than the pushing nods of the saleswomen. "I would like your opinion..." And if she tried to prank Maya? Well, they would cross that bridge when they came to it.
Other Maya was not particularly enthusiastic about having someone in her mirror. Maya could sympathize. Few people were, and none above the age of 5. On the other hand, the white-haired, fragile girl didn't look surprised at all. Hmmm.
>>"So you're gifted. You just hang out in people's mirrors all day waiting for a chance to use their reflections in order to mock them? That's a constructive use of your talents."
She rolled her eyes. Of course. Technically, the accusation was fair, but this time, she just wanted to help. It was a rare notion in her life. Most of the time, it ended exactly like this.
"Yeah, ya're welcome."
Other Maya walked away. Mirror frowned. Something about the girl made her curious. But then again... most meetings in her life ended with someone walking away. See if I care. Picking up her backpack, she was just about to leave the dressing room, and managed to get to the mirror on the other side, when the pixie-girl returned.
>> "Uhm. Excuse me. Mirror girl?... I would like your opinion..."
Maya grinned as she turned around, and seeing the dress she let out a low whistle.
Every bit of sass was like nails on a chalkboard. Maya cringed. She had been mean first... kind of. Right? This was her fault? Probably.
She hung the dress on the peg and sighed. "Can we start over? I'm Maya. And it is nice to meet you." She started to offer her hand, but then thought better of it since... well, she was offering her hand to a mirror.
"You do have a physical body don't you?" The girl no longer looked like Maya so that meant she had an image of her own, but who was Maya to judge if she didn't have a body? She waved her hand to clear the air. It didn't really matter so long as she could see out of the mirror. And obviously she could.
"You need help in there?" Every time the lady brought her new undergarments she asked.
Every time Ghost's answer was the same. "No thank you. I'll let you know." She accepted the silky and stiff underthings that were passed to her from over the door.
The garments were set aside, but Maya was pleased to note that they were much... less than the others. No petticoat. No extra side boned slip with an attachable armpit strap of confusion. Nope. It was just a simple strapless slip this time with a little boning along the seams to support the dress.
"I used to live at the Mansion. I sort of still do. On the weekends anyway. I own an equal opportunity bookstore called the Full Circle in Uptown, Manhattan. I live with my husband on weekdays at the Iris Clinic, another equal opportunity establishment." It was almost a perfect sound byte like the one they used on the news, only with her personal information interjected in. Maybe it was a little weird sounding from her lips to say "my husband" but it was fast growing on her.
"I'm also gifted. Like you." Maya wasn't an exhibitionist. She worked carefully at undressing herself and re-dressing herself in a way that would be the least embarrassing to either of them. Maya had scars. A silver set of claw marks across her stomach was the most noticeable of them. That and the discolored spots on her hands.
>>"Can we start over? I'm Maya. And it is nice to meet you."
Mirror grinned.
"Same here, and... same here." she could have reached or even walked out of the mirror without any trouble, but she decided the dressing room would probably have been too crowded for her, Other Maya, and the Dress. So she settled for leaning against the frame and watching. >>"You do have a physical body don't you?"
She nodded "I do." and left is at that, tilting her head as she listened to Other Maya's introduction. It was more than interesting.
"The Mansion? Ya mean the school for muties?" oh yes, she'd been there. Once. And still had problems with seeing why everyone was so obsessed with that place. It was full of weird people. Yeah, nice people too, and definitely a haven for folks like herself, but still... the place had 'school' in it's name, for heaven's sake! >>"I'm also gifted. Like you."
"Oh. I see." it was funny, calling it a gift. It had been a lot of things for Maya - 'ablility', 'power', 'mutation' - but she rarely thought of it as a gift. Never, since Mom left. "That's cool. What's your deal?" she didn't sound too enthusiastic. She tried not to.
Watching Other Maya dress up, she raised an eyebrow. The dress looked complicated. Of course, for her, everything over jeans and shirts looked complicated.
"Can I ask ya somethin'?... Ya are already married, and everyone who's not dumb and blind can see ya're not the greatest fan of bridal fashion, so... why are ya here?"
Maya kept her mouth shut. She wasn't sure if the mirror Maya was really a Maya or if she was mocking her. If Ghost-Maya had to pick one, though, she would put her money on mocking. Another sigh. At least the girl wasn't forever trapped in the mirrors. She had a physical body by her own admission.
Once the new undergarment was securely in place Maya brought her hands together over her head, perfect diving form. With the dress unzipped and unbuttoned, but still on the hangar, she positioned her hands at the bottom opening. Yes. It probably looked ridiculous but with only one person at this this, it was the best way.
"The Mansion? Ya mean the school for muties?"
Maya cleared her throat and spoke through the material as she shimmied her way up. "Yes. Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. I am a member of the X-Men who are based there." The girl's tone had seemed less than enthusiastic, but she'd met many with a stigma against the school. That and mirror-Maya didn't seem to particularly like anything. Not without a heaping side of sassafras.
"What's your deal?"
"My deal?" Her arms crested the top of the dress and disentangled the hangar before the rest of her shimmied up there. "I'm an elemental, Air elemental to be exact. They call me Ghost." She tugged and tugged until the dress was falling straight from her hips. Then came the task of zipping it up. Really another pair of hands were needed with the placement of this zipper. Bravely, Ghost-Maya tried it herself. She was pretty flexible, but after 1/3 of the way through she realized that she wasn't that flexible.
"Can I ask ya somethin'?... Ya are already married, and everyone who's not dumb and blind can see ya're not the greatest fan of bridal fashion, so... why are ya here?"
Maya wriggled and tried a different angle for the zipper. Her fingertips brushed it, but couldn't gain purchase enough to zip it any more. "My... Uhm... It's kind of complicated. Lots of people weren't happy that they weren't invited to the actual wedding so we are planning to have a ceremony and a celebration. Some kind of his friends should meet my friends party complete with wedding dress... hopefully. Uhm. Could you?" Maya turned away from the mirror so that the zipper was facing it.
Maya followed the show with growing curiosity. Both the girl's unique way of putting on a dress and what she was saying managed to catch her full attention. X-men? Air elemental? Ghost?...
>>"Uhm. Could you?"
"Yeah, sure." stepping out of the mirror, Maya dropped her backpack to the floor, and pulled up the zipper, careful not to do any damage. The dress looked very easy to rip.
"So, ya're some kinda mutant superhero?" she grinned "Sounds like a lot of fun. Codenames and all. I know someone who goes to that school, but she never mentioned this part of the curriculum..." she never mentioned any part of the curriculum, really. Not to mention the fact that she was a mutant. Whatever. Leaning to the side, she looked up at M... Ghost's face and winked.
"By the way, name's Maya Morris. Really. But some folks call me Mirror."
Finished with the dress, another idea popped into her mind. Stepping back into the mirror, she slipped into Other Maya's reflection, and twirled around.
"So, how do ya like it? 'cause I'm telling ya, this one's gonna get ripped off on yer wedding night."
That made Maya smile, laugh even. The idea of her running around in spandex... well, it wasn't as if Sam hadn't suggested it. "I hadn't exactly thought of it with those words attached, but... maybe. We do try to help people."
"Sounds like a lot of fun. Codenames and all. I know someone who goes to that school, but she never mentioned this part of the curriculum..."
"Oh it is by no means part of the curriculum. We don't pressure the kids into anything, but they all seem to want to grow up and join the team anyway. Can hardly pry the Danger Room time slots out of their grabby hands sometimes."
"By the way, name's Maya Morris. Really. But some folks call me Mirror."
"Code names just kind of happen sometimes, don't they?" It was nice to know she wasn't being toyed with. Not that Maya didn't trust just about everyone to tell the truth all the time anyway.
Ghost-Maya looked over her shoulder as the other Maya was retreating back into the mirror.
"Who is your friend? Maybe I know them?"
She picked up the bottom of the dress and shuffled herself around to get a good look.
Other Maya was ready, already controlling her reflection and twirling around.
"So, how do ya like it? 'cause I'm telling ya, this one's gonna get ripped off on yer wedding night."
"Could you twirl a bit slower?" It was an odd sensation to watch herself move but not be moving. "What does it feel like in there? Can you feel how this thing fits?" Maya ran her finger under the lip of the neck. Her one complaint so far was that the top hem rolled the lace over onto the back of the garment and she could feel it's itchiness.
Maya tugged at a bit of cloth that looked rumpled on the other Maya not sure if it even was rumpled on her end or not. "Technically, I've already had my wedding night. What do you think about this one?" Ghost swished her hips a little. It did look like she had hips. That was a success all on its own.
That school sounded more and more interesting by the second. Danger Room? Seriously? Maya made a mental note to return to the subject later on. Maybe a second visit wouldn't hurt. Strictly off the record, of course. And only for study's sake.

The girl grinned at that, and didn't comment. Code names did happen. In her case, having a neutral name like Mirror had the nice side effect of not having to worry about the gender change. Of course, she could have just picked a normal unisex name, but to tell the truth... Mom picked Maya and Gawain, and Mirror liked being Maya and Gawain. End of story.
>>"Who is your friend? Maybe I know them?"
"Um... it's a gal called Twyla. Same age as me." she answered, shrugging a tad too obviously, and suddenly seemed very much interested in how the dress looked on Ghost.
>>"What does it feel like in there? Can you feel how this thing fits?"
Maya shook her head.
"Nah, not really. It's just... um, it's like an illusion or somethin'. I only know what I see." twirling a bit slower, she made sure Ghost had plenty of time to examine the dress from every possible angle. She had no clue about fashion, but about looking at oneself in the mirror... well, she was a champion.
>>"Technically, I've already had my wedding night. What do you think about this one?"
"There's always time for a rematch." she grinned a cheeky grin as she slipped out of the reflection, leaving Ghost to do whatever she wanted to do with it "I like the dress. And I'm sure ya can already tell how great I am in the fashion department." she added with a serious face, folding her arms in her oversize sweatshirt.
"Twyla. Twyla." The name sounded familiar, but there was no face that came to mind when she said the name. "I don't believe I've met her. I fell like I should have, but I don't know... How old are you?" Ghost-Maya took a step back to appraise the other-Maya. Of course now she was wearing her skin and her dress, but she couldn't really place an age through the baggy clothes she'd seen her in.
Ghost appreciated the line of this dress on her slow twirling self. This... could be the dress. She was sort of starting to feel attached to it already.
The clerk knocked on the door hard enough to make Ghost-Maya jump.
"Maya, dear, are you coming out?"
Ghost-Maya wrinkled her nose at the voice and the door. "Are there any more nut-balls out there?"
There was some flustered huffing from beyond the door and some sputtered "I never-- we don't cater to--" Before she finally settled on "Well, I don't know, but I'll keep you safe this time. Scout's honor."
Ghost shot a dubious look to other-Maya. "You think?" She really couldn't help but laugh at the situation. If there were crazies this time, she would have to beat them off herself because she did like this dress. Even other-Maya liked the dress.
Ghost unlocked and opened the door. She did have to go out and find the pieces that went with the dress. Veil and shoes and such.
"Well, you've helped me with my fashion needs. I would love to return the favor some day." Did she wave to the mirror or something? She seemed able to go between them with relative ease. Ghost-Maya settled with a half bow sort of thing (it was only half because the dress was tight enough around the middle that it constricted her movement) before she tottered out to the large mirrors again. Yeah. She wouldn't be leaping any hurdles in the dress, but somehow that situation seemed unlikely.
