Jaxon Vanderhall stood staring into the store window, a white shopping bag at her side. In the pale-blue knee length skirt, white button up shirt, and low heeled sandals, and expensive jewelry, anyone looking at her would see her as what she was; a high class house wife on another expensive shopping trip. Looking closer would reveal a lot more going on. Her left hand had a flesh colored bandage skillfully wrapped around the palm, hiding a black and blue bite mark that had bled when it was inflicted, her eyes were far away, instead of focused on the pretty items in the window, and she had an aura of despondence surrounding her.
Her son was home on break from boarding school and her husband was off on a trip probably shacked up with his secretary. Yesterday had been hard. Her little boy was turning into a monster, and it seemed there was nothing she could do to change it. Looking at her hand, she knew something needed to change: when your own son bites you hard enough to bleed, there is something very wrong.
She tried to put him in time-out for hitting another boy on a play date, and he had promptly told her to ‘shut up’ because she was a ‘stupid girl’ and not the boss of him, followed by the savage bite to her hand when she tried again. She had tried to take him home only to be met with another threat, he had only listened when one of the other fathers stepped in. She had endured the pitying looks of the other mothers, the horrified looks of the nanny and driver, and the shocked stares of the emergency room staff.
Jaxon sighed, ignoring the noise of the cars on the street, ignoring the people walking past her. She turned, heading down the street as her hand started to throb. She needed to take the antibiotic and the pain killer soon.

Jaxon was seated in the posh restaurant she frequented, the outdoor seating nice today, and while waiting to be served, she flipped open the newspaper she had bought just before entering. It must have been a slow, surprising that nothing of importance was going on, and they had been so pressed for material they had dug up photos of last months Human/Mutant Valentines ball, and had written a story about how things had changed since the first one.
Looking at the picture made Jaxon’s mind wander back to that night. God, I was so young…
It had been one of the most fun evenings she had experienced, and definitely the most fun she had while at a charity ball. The first time she had felt comfortable with her powers. She laughed, her bandaged hand coming up to touch her mouth as if to silence herself. The pain it caused made her look at her hand, almost in surprise. She hadn’t realized what she was doing... Since when do I cover my laugh?
When the waiter approached with her almond salad, no dressing, Jaxon stared at him. She hadn’t realized that she had ordered that. Staring at it in shock, she suddenly felt very empty. And not just in her stomach. When was the last time she had a truly happy moment? Most of her adult moments of joy centered around being a mutant, the only exception was the birth of her son… and that was swiftly fading to a horrible realization that she had no effect on her own child.
Almost as if to reassure herself that she hadn’t become someone else, she reached for the lurking power in her mind. It was weak, like a muscle long atrophied, but it was there. It responded almost like an old dog, looking for a pat on the head, almost reaching for her consciousness.
Staring at the pictures in the paper, the bandage on her hand, and the salad, Jaxon suddenly was angry. Angry at the person she had become, angry at the life she had somehow chosen, and angry at her neglect of herself. When did I become someone else?! What am I doing?!
In a sudden revival of her will, Jaxon sat up straight and called the waiter back over. When he arrived, she handed him the salad. “Take this back and bring me a cheeseburger. Thank you.”
Watching the young man’s mouth drop open, Jaxon suddenly felt good again, a feeling that was strong in comparison to the lack of emotion she had for years. Ignoring the stares of the people around her she told the waiter to add bacon to the burger and watched him leave. With a satisfied smile, she pulled her day planner out of her purse and ripped out a page, ignoring whatever was written on it. Then she started making a list.

After eating as much of her cheeseburger as she could without throwing up afterwards, Jaxon had strode confidently from the restaurant, her list in the pocket of her skirt.
She arrived to the penthouse apartment with a smile on her face, though it wavered when she saw what was going on. Jack was running rampant, somehow he got a hold of paint, and he was jumping up on the couch flinging pigment around with his dirty hands. When ever the Nanny came close to try and stop him, he would start shouting at the top of his lungs and run away until she gave up, then he returned to the couch.
Calling out to the poor nanny, Jaxon hadn’t thought when she had left Jack with her that it would end up like this, she breezed past the scene, completely ignoring the child. “Marcie? Would you join me in my room, please?”
The harried looking woman, normally well groomed, was splattered with paint and some of her hair had been pulled out of her ponytail, making her look like a crazy person. Jaxon couldn’t blame her. “Mrs. Vanderhall, I am so sorry! I don’t know what happened, but I promise this is not my usual….”
Jaxon smiled at her and made a motion to stop talking. “I know Marcie. I’m not mad. Well, not at you, because this isn’t your fault.” Pulling her wallet out, she handed the distressed woman a hundred dollars in twenties. “Go change, get some lunch, and make sure to get those clothes to the cleaners. On me. Come back in an hour or an hour and a half.” Looking at the closed bedroom door, the screaming child in the living room quiet thanks to his confusion, she took a confident posture. “I’ll handle the little monster.”
The poor woman looked so surprised, and she stammered out a question about being fired. Jaxon shook her head with a commiserating look. “No, you are not fired. Now go, and ignore him on the way out. Thank you Marcie.” Though the woman looked very confused, she did as she was told, the noise reviving as she walked through, but it quieted as she ignored him.
Jaxon closed her bedroom door, and changed into a pair of jeans she had to dig to find. A little snug, from a few years ago, the jeans still fit. Pulling on a plain white t-shirt, still far too fancy for what Jaxon had in mind, it was the best she could do. She began unpacking her purchases.
She heard the click of the bedroom door, indicating that Jack had opened it. Looking over at him, she gave him an expectant look, as if to say ‘What do you want?’ He watched her with wide blue eyes, before he reached into the jar of paint and flung a handful of it towards her. Though it fell short, it was what Jax had been waiting for. He started to giggle, and she headed towards him.
Reaching out with her good hand, before he knew what was happening, she gave him a sharp slap across his chubby cheek. Though not hard enough to really hurt, it was enough of a blow to make his pay attention. Grabbing his ear, making him drop the jar and start squealing, she forced him to look at her. “You be QUIET and listen! I don’t care what that school has been teaching you, but I am your mother, and by god, you WILL respect me and you WILL obey me.”
The child looked surprised but he recovered quickly, shouting at her. “I’m ‘onna tell Daddy!”
Jaxon just smiled, making the child’s eyes widen. “Your Daddy is gone Jack… He is far far away, and the only one here is me. So, you go ahead and tell Daddy, and when you do, tell him that Mommy is the boss now.”
Jack stared at her as if she had lost her mind, and maybe she had, but at least he was behaving better than before and Jaxon felt for the first time in years, like she had control. He had finally seemed to realize that he was not the one in charge. Pulling him by his ear into the kitchen, Jaxon opened a cabinet, revealing the cleaning supplies. Still holding tight to his ear, she grabbed a sponge, a small bucket, and some rug cleaner. Filling the bucket with a few inches of water, she poured in some soap.
Dragging the supplies and the child back to her room, she pointed to the paint on the carpet. “Now you clean this up. And if you even THINK of making a bigger mess… I will show you something that will make you wet your pants. Oh, and, as of now, consider yourself enrolled in military school. They don’t like spoiled little brats there!” Releasing Jack’s red ear, Jaxon stared down at him, a new smile painted on her face.
After a moment’s hesitation, the boy got to his knees and began tentatively cleaning up the blue paint, watching his mother with a wariness he never had before. Jaxon simply turned and finished what she had been doing. After putting away her new purchases, she pulled a suitcase out of her closet, and began packing.
The nanny returned to find Jaxon reading the paper in a chair, she had changed again this time into a nice pair of grey slacks and a colorful blouse she had bought on the way home, Jack on the floor of the living room still cleaning up paint, and a packed suitcase with a few other items next to the door.
“Marcie! Feeling better?” Jaxon stood, ignoring Jack, and reached for the page she had printed out of the computer. “Now, I’m leaving for a while. This is a written statement, so you shouldn’t have any problems. I am tripling your pay, so I hope you will agree to stay with Jack for a few days. You have full use of our driver and the credit card, to buy anything Jack needs for school but nothing else. I have also given you the right to use corporeal punishment if Jack starts to misbehave again. But don’t worry, he will be going to the Jamison Military Academy on Friday, so if he does act up, you won’t have to put up with it for long.”
Flipping to the next page, Jaxon showed the woman the list and the map. “This is the list of what he will need, and a map to take him there Friday. Thank you so much, you have done a fantastic job with what must have been a horrible assignment. I will be leaving now.”
Turning her gaze to Jack, she added “You will keep scrubbing until Miss Marcie thinks you have learned you lesson. And you remember what corporal punishment is?” He nodded slowly, looking back and forth from Marcie to his mother. “Then you know it means that Miss Marcie can spank you just like I can… So be good.”
With a pat to the boy’s head, Jaxon headed for the door, picking up her bag and purse, leaving the apartment with a jaunty step.

Jaxon had gone down to the garage of the apartment building, and had driven her BMW to the outskirts of the city. She had stopped in the parking garage of a semi-busy mall, and turned on her cell phone, which had been off since she left the restaurant. Digging through the bag on the passenger seat she found what she was looking for. A few of the things she had saved from before her marriage.
In her hands now was a journal. Flipping it open, looking at her young handwriting, she chuckled, flipping past some of the most important things in her young life. Reaching the pages she was looking for, she scanned down, checking for phone numbers. This was the time in her life when she started meeting other mutants.
She had gotten rid of all the official cards from the Sanctuary and the Xavier Mansion. A journal with friends numbers in it would be fine if her husband had found it… Cards from mutant organizations? Not at all acceptable to him; he would want to know why, and what she did, and Jaxon would have ended up telling him she was a mutant. Not that she might not have to soon anyway… She did have a son who could become a mutant.
Finding the number David had given her, she tried his number… only to be met with a dial tone and the phrase ‘this number is no longer in service.’ Venus’s number came back the same way. Bacchus’s was different, ‘this number is out of range and cannot be reached at this time. Please try again later’ but it still meant the same thing. Scanning through the pages she found Pluto’s number. One of Venus’s brothers, a fun guy, and Jaxon had really started to like him before she lost contact with the mutant side of herself.
“If this number works, I hope he remembers me.”
Dialing the number, she waited, her heart lurching when she heard the hesitation, thinking it was another dead number. But then… a click and the sound of ringing! Trying to keep from getting too excited, she waited with bated breath: it could be someone else’s number by now or he could not remember her, after all it had been ten years.
A male voice answered, but her memory wasn't perfect and she couldn't tell if it was Pluto or not... So, Jaxon hesitantly spoke, trying to be careful incase it wasn't him. "Hello? May I speak with Pluto please? I'm an old friend... and I really need some help if he is there..."
Pluto winced as he rolled to his other side and then picked up his cell phone, He was currently crashed at the mansion, He had recently been in a post epic end of the world battle and he was quite honestly hating life, He tried to help the world out and he succeeded to a point but it was at his own sacrifice and of his brothers even more so. He wasn’t in the best mood, but he was a butterfly so far as social things were concerned and couldn’t resist a phone call particularly from a number he couldn’t recognize.
"Hello? May I speak with Pluto please? I'm an old friend... and I really need some help if he is there..."
“ Jaxon? Yeah its me, what Can I do for you action?”
He rolled to a seated position and stretched, he tossed the video game controller onto the pillow next to him after pushing pause. It was a simple strategy game. Nothing too violent or Gorey.

Jaxon sighed in relief when it was him, but then her eye widened. He recognized her voice? She must not have changed much. Hearing his nickname for her made her smile wide enough to make her cheeks hurt. “Hey, I’m so glad your number still works…”
Running a hand through her hair, they slipped easily through the short strands, and she sighed. “I know it’s been a while, but… I need some place to stay. Some place mutant friendly, you know...”
Then with a softer voice she added, “I’d go to a hotel, but… I don’t know how long it will be before he finds out I’ve left… I need to not be found for a while.” Not only would Fredrick come to wherever she was and physically force her back to the apartment, but if he couldn’t find her he would cut her funds until she was forced to go back. She wouldn’t last long penniless in New York, especially not as soft and useless as she had become.
“I know it’s a big favor but…” A tear slipped down her cheek, but Jaxon quickly wiped it away and cleared her throat. “… I would really appreciate it…”
He really should probably be changing his number. Not cause of her, but because of the reason he was sore and more so the fall out with his family was going to stick.
~`“I know it’s been a while, but… I need some place to stay. Some place mutant friendly, you know...”
“Well, I am at the Mansion for the next couple days”
~~“I’d go to a hotel, but… I don’t know how long it will be before he finds out I’ve left… I need to not be found for a while.”
“But soon as my pal, down in Antarctica gets the energy to make the jump back we will be heading that way. And if there is somewhere not to be found that’s the place.”
~`“I know it’s a big favor but…” “… I would really appreciate it…”
“No problem and done and done, if you are up for it. If not to Antarctica, I could get something together here for you more than likely, to be honest though I could use the company down there.”
He looked down at the half stump of his tail with the bandage at the end and shook his head.
“though, if you troubles could be solved in a couple of days with a strong arm, I’d be happy to sort things out if possible.”
“The Mansion, really? Wow.” Jax could tell he was serious by his voice, but the idea of one of the large red mutant hanging out in the Mansion was… Odd… to say the least. “I wasn’t sure if they were still in operation.” After all the annoying ‘no service’ messages, she had assumed they’d closed Thanks to the mutant virus that had been released.
Antartica?... Would she really be able to handle that? With a stiff shake of her head she stiffened her spine. “Actually, Antarctica sound great. I had heard there was something going on there, and I would love to keep you company.” However, none of her clothes were suitable for that kind of weather. She would need to go shopping, or back the apartment… She was going shopping, it seemed, while she still had working plastic.
She chuckled at his offer, there was the guy she knew. Pluto had really grown up apparently. “Thanks, I wish you could solve this with just a little muscle… but it’s not quite that simple…” Jaxon had to learn to stand on her own again, and going away with Pluto seemed like a great way to do it. The more she thought about it the more she liked the idea.
Fredrick would never look for her there, and even if her found her, he couldn’t force her to leave, not with all the mutants there who would probably object to that kind of thing. And even if she suddenly decided she wanted to leave she would have to wait for a scheduled jump or flight back, which would give her time to think.
“Okay, I’ll meet you at the mansion in a few hours… And… Thanks.”
“Yeah, I know, but after I tell you the rest, you probably will understand.”
~~“I wasn’t sure if they were still in operation.”
“Yup, they are still kicking. So is the order, actually they are all over the place.”
~~“Actually, Antarctica sound great. I had heard there was something going on there, and I would love to keep you company.”
“Cool.” Pause and let the terrible pun set in. “heh.”
~~“Thanks, I wish you could solve this with just a little muscle… but it’s not quite that simple…”
“Everything is that simple to some people… But it’s good to hear you aren’t one of them.”
~~“Okay, I’ll meet you at the mansion in a few hours… And… Thanks.”
“My Pleasure, believe me.” He hung up the phone and leaned back on the bead, He was going to beat this Pokémon version black before they left for the frozen south…and apparently he only had a few hours before he had company that would make him feel goofy for playing it….hmmmm odd that Jaxon rated enough to him to be embarrassed about gamming. He might have to look into that…
Jaxon pulled slowly up to the mansion a few hours after her phone call with Pluto. She had gone shopping, doing her best to change from boring housewife and back to herself… Throwing out everything that was black and white, tan, or grey in her suitcase as well as all the slacks and all the skirts that hit below the knee. She had repacked it with soft sweaters, long sleeve and short t-shirts in a soft fabric, jeans, soft warm pants, and pajamas, all of it in a multitude of colors. No more stiff and starchy fabrics, no more stiff and starchy Jaxon. It wasn’t logical, but it had been the only thing she could think to do until she figured out herself and her life.
After buzzing the gate and driving through, she had parked in an out of the way spot, and climbed out. Even though it wasn’t cold out, she got chills looking at the building. Seeing it, hardly changed in ten years, was both disconcerting and comforting. She hadn’t spent much time here but it brought back memories anyway.
Checking her reflection in the car window, Jaxon reached up to pat her hair into place. Freezing she stared at her self. She wore jeans and a soft yellow t-shirt with poppy flowers printed on it, looking better already in her opinion, and her hair was straight and perfect. Quirking her mouth to the side, she reached up and purposely ruffled it, a little at first, but she liked it so she did the whole thing. Running her fingers through it, she smiled. She missed her long hair when she thought about it, but she had cut it off after her son was born so it was a bit late for regrets.
Squaring her shoulders, she marched up the steps to the front door, putting on a brave face, and rang the bell.
A boy answered the door, Bright luminescent purple hair, like a blacklight and glowing white pale skin. His eyes shimmered with the same luminesces as his hair, He smiled and his teeth glowwed due to the light his hair was putting off.
"I have seen, this all before. You are here to see the red one...no?"
He then laughed a loud laugh that was at his own joke before it could even set in.
"no, really I buzzed you in at the gate. I'll show you where big red is recouping." The boys hair changed to the deepest black and then his skin took on a yellowy glow in the dark tint, his flesh and hair cycled through until they reached a door on the first level.
"Hey Pluto, There is a pretty woman here to see you, You want me to send her away? No way she wants you right?" He waited about a second until he heard the first heavy step hit the ground, waved to Jaxon and ran, a neon faded blury trail was the only thing left in the spot where he stood.
Pluto opened the door with only a Baggy pair of scrub pants on, one leg was rolled all the way up to his thigh, The would be bare leg was wrapped in a clean white bandage as was what was left of the rest of his tail. "Neon, Tell her I'll be ready right now." He said looking into the hall.
His musclur red chest held an array of cuts and bruises,stiches and scratches all healing but still not all the way healed. "hey Action, long time no see." In the background the closing credits to the latest pokemon collcetion was scrolling by on the screen.
Staring at the boy for a moment, it had been a long time since she had seen someone with a visible mutation, she gave him a slightly hesitant smile. “Oh, yes, I am. Thank you…” Judging by the boy’s responses to her, she would guess he was some sort of psychic, though the glowing might be some other mutation. He was a bit odd, like he was a step ahead of her, but he seemed nice enough.
Then she heard something else he said. Recouping? Is he hurt? Jaxon’s face furrowed in confusion, but she waited, her patience vastly improved since she was eighteen. Laughing when the boy called her a ‘pretty woman’ and then teased Pluto through the door, she watched him run away, turning back just as he opened the door.
Inhaling as she turned, she forgot to exhale. Pluto looked mostly the same, with the bodily changes that came with age; slightly broader shoulders as if he stood differently were on display since he was shirtless. She saw the scratches and bruises, but what caught her attention was the bright bandage that stood out against the red skin of his leg.
Her mouth dropped open and her hand flew up in shock. “Pluto! What happened to you? Should you be standing?..” Glaring at him then, she narrowed her eyes. “How could you let me go on about my problems when you…”
Tears filled her eyes and she sighed. “Jesus, Meatball… We’re quite a pair, huh?” Then, careful of his leg, she leaned forward, wrapping her arms around him in a desperate hug, her head pressed against his chest. "I should make you sit down..."
Neon smirked at her, he wouldn’t bother pointing out that he was just messing with her, better for him if word got out that he could see the future as well as run really fast.
~~“Pluto! What happened to you? Should you be standing?..”
Pluto smiled at her, how long had it been since someone worried when he was banged up?
“I’m fine, gravity means little to me, if I was carrying around a house or something maybe.”
~~“How could you let me go on about my problems when you…”
“When I am perfectly fine, and you are telling me you are going to run off with me? I am not seeing the part where I am supposed to stop you. See I am getting hugs already.”
~~“Jesus, Meatball… We’re quite a pair, huh?”
“I'm more meatball then Jesus and Yes. yes we are.” He said it like it was a good thing, I high contrast to the downward spiral that Jaxon seemed to think they were going down.
~~"I should make you sit down..."
“You really should.” He lifted her in one arm with ease and carried her into the room. Grabbing the remote and hitting the off button on the screen and the speakers as they made it toward the futon. He then placed her on the futon and set down toward the other end. “So, Step says we can be out of dodge in about a couple hours. He is just waiting on some more stuff that some of the residents down south requested. He teleports everything and everyone in the room with him, so you can take whatever you want down there, though you can get anything you actually need down there too. You feel like talking about it? Or you want to leave it for awhile? Once we are down there, we’ll have not a whole lot else to do. I mean we will but you know what I mean. It is nice to be out of the city, but man does it feel like nowhere. There are stars, though, they make up for not having shops.”
Jaxon’s face broke with a smile at the idea of running away with him. She had to laugh. “Since when are you the charmer?” She gave him a squeeze for the hug comment, and was about to pull away when he picked her up.
“Pluto!” Her peal of laughter and surprise shot out of her, her hands grabbing him for security. When he deposited her on the couch, she shook her head, glancing at the television. “I was wondering how the transport was going to work… I tried to pack light.”
She shrugged leaning her side against the couch as she turned to look at him. She looked down at her hand with a sigh. “I came to you for help, you have a right to know what you are getting into…” Jaxon unwound the bandage from her hand, exposing the black and blue healing bite mark. “But, the sort version? I woke up from the coma of my life, married to a man who won’t let me leave and a son who thinks this is okay...”
His description of Antarctica made her want to go all the more. Jaxon had lived in the city her whole life, so the stars were a real treat, something she loved. And being in the middle of nowhere sounded better than being in the middle of everything. A fresh start, and a chance to find herself again, without all the distractions.
Leaning her head against the back of the couch, she rolled her eyes. “But you don’t get to escape. What happened to you?”
“Charmer? You are coming with me right? Oh, runaway, runaway.Hmmmm.” it sounded like he was now considering this charming possibility.
~~“I was wondering how the transport was going to work… I tried to pack light.”
“ he says it’s the only way he can do it with out getting really disoriented.” He shrugged.
~~“I came to you for help, you have a right to know what you are getting into…” “But, the sort version? I woke up from the coma of my life, married to a man who won’t let me leave and a son who thinks this is okay...”
“hmmmm, I think maybe a bit of that muscle we were talking about earlier, would solve at least the guy’s issues.” He didn’t like the way she said ‘wont let me leave.’ He then looked thoughtful for a moment “How old is the kiddo? That looks pretty rough.” He reached over onto his night stand and got some salve and a roll of bandaging. He took her wrist and undid the last of the bandage whipped some of the questionable smelling and looking substance on her wound. “I’ve been doing this all week and it is patching me up quick. I promise the smell goes away when it dries and it is more than worth it.” he then gently but methodically wrapped her hand.

“I happen to me. Life caught up with me too, in a different way though. Most of my brothers were out of control more so then they used too. I am sure you have heard some of their insane rhetoric before…well they are following through with a hundred kinds of violence in Australia…….and now they are getting wrapped up in this whole Russia vs. China Fiasco. They are doing a lot of things in the name of mutant kind in the way of the inquisition or any other planned genocide of a race….they are aiming for the humans…and well I decided to stand up to them and it got out of control fast….It has been out of control for a looooooong time but I passed my breaking point a long time ago. They thought I’d go along with them since Russia is kidnapping mutants. I don’t know it is wretched, what I have done and what they have done in turn…Its bad. We will be safe in the arctic. But after I heal up, whenever that is, I need to get back out there and stop the ones still out there that are causing pain to innocent people.” He eyes held a lot more pain then was coming out in his voice. If she took a close look at his eyes she would see they were about as tired as hers were.
He wasn’t sure what he could say out loud, could he say he killed mercury or Saturn? He didn’t want to…they weren’t the mercury and Saturn she would remember anyhow. Saturn turned into a drug abusing manic and Mercury had turned from maniac into…a monster, literally. Not that that made their deaths any less dirty on his hands. He didn’t think he could.
