The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Meld stood in front of the Mansion gates, all her possession son her person save her bone saw which she had stored in a safe place. The emotions that now cascaded through her mind were confusing, to say the least. Uncertainty and determination were primary among them; uncertainty because she was about to pose as and live with those her esteemed Order considered to be the enemy and determination because she was certain that she was doing the right thing. Lori was a fool for not utilizing her skills and even more of a fool for not realizing that someone needed to be positioned within the Mansion and should have been positioned there long ago. And, as seemed to be a pattern in her life, since no one else was willing to take the job it would be up to Meld to do so. And she would do so because failure was not an option.
Most of her other turbulent emotions involved thoughts of who and what she was leaving behind and what she was entering into. She hoped that her notes to Aura and Predator would be enough, hoped that they would understand what she was doing and why she was doing in. As for the other Order members, she didn't really care all that much, not having much of a personal connection to them. Even the so-called high ranking members she had met, primarily Isabel and Abyss, she didn't care for. They seemed like fine mutants and Abyss in particular seemed very sure of his values and wanted to fight, but how was it that The Order had been so infective since she had come to join its ranks? And from what she could tell it did little before she joined either, aside from making the abomination that was Haywire. And, if she were honest with herself, she would admit that she blamed the Order leadership for its catastrophic lack of accomplishing anything at all.
There was also the sense of anticipation, not only that she was about to attempt something that no one had previously attempted and the success and prestige that was sure to bring her, but for a more vain reason as well. This would be the first time her newly constructed tail flesh meld would be visible for all to see and she couldn't' help but be proud of this most ambitious of creations. She knew most didn't' view her flesh melds in quite the same way she did, but their horror and discomfort was almost as good as their admiring glances in her mind. Strong reactions were good, proof that she had done something exceptions, whether the reactions were positive or negative was almost entirely besides the point.
In truth, this was Meld's last stand within the Order. If it went well, and she hoped desperately that it would, and she managed to actually accomplish something than she would remain within the Order's loving embrace and hopefully ascend its ranks and accomplish yet more. But if it didn't...if it didn't then she would once again be alone in the world, fighting the cause on her own and in her own way. Better to accomplish what little she could by working alone then to accomplish nothing by working for a feeble and useless organization that did nothing but hold her back through reputation and through orders she couldn't possibly obey.
With a deep breath Meld crossed the street to approach the gates. She schooled her expression to one of careful neutrality, letting only a tinge of her unsureness reach her eyes since she knew that very quality would be more effective than almost anything she could say upon entrance. She needed to allow at least a little of what she was feeling shine through as it would lend credence to what she was about to say. She rang the buzzer. "Is Ghost available? This is Meld." Her voice didn't shake but there was an almost unnoticeable hesitation in the question.
Someone scrambled for an answer. "Uhh. I-uh. I'll see." Obviously they weren't used to personal requests.
"It's not too short!" The voice came from no where in particular but was clear as a bell followed by the sound of a cell phone ringing.
The wind picked up rustling leaves and the tree boughs around the gate. Ghost stalked in a ruffle of her own power. And that power was ruffling a short skirt. A swarthy, tall man trucked after her. Their conversation became evident the closer they came. Though it wasn't too hard since they were practically shouting at each other.
"It's indecent! You've been running around like this for two years?"
"It's not indecent, it's my day off. And no. Camp uniforms didn't breathe this well."
"Well at least the Camp boys had some decency."
"Yeah. As they were unlawfully holding, torturing, and killing people!" Ghost just couldn't reach the gate fast enough so she ghosted the rest of the way, passing over Meld and solidifying on the other side of her. "Hey, Meld. I got a message you were here. What's up?"
"Don't you walk away from me, I'm not done having this conversation yet!"
Ghost closed her eyes and worked very hard to ignore the man fumbling to punch in the correct gate code while angry. "I didn't remember you having a uh--" Despite the fact that Ghost's eyes were closed she motioned to the tail area of Meld.
The man finally got through the gate and marched up to the two women. He sort of slowed at the sight of Meld. "Meld, this is Allen Swift, my dad." Once you knew what to look for the resemblance was easy to spot. Allen, meanwhile, seemed a little bit at a loss for what to do. Did he shake the girl's metal hand or keep yelling at Ghost for dressing indecently?

Meld stood in front of the Mansion doors, not letting her discomfort show. She could be patient when she needed to, in fact it was usually one of her better qualities, but just now she wasn't pulling patience off very well. With everything that her self imposed mission meant and with all the risks involved, she wanted nothing more than to simply get started and not be stuck out here waiting. The longer she waited the more time she had to consider the danger, not only from the enemy she was about to join but also from the allies she had supposedly abandoned.
Luckily she didn't have to wait long although Ghost having an argument with someone was not what she expected especially not an argument about her...indecent dress? And then Meld heard the comments about the camps and, although she had thankfully never been a victim herself, barely restrained herself from growling. She had heard about them and it was one of many reasons why she engaged in the the fight he had dedicated her life to.
"Hey, Meld. I got a message you were here. What's up?"
Meld started slightly as Ghost appeared out of thin air from the other side of the gates, having never seen her utilize her power before. "Um..." She didn't have to feign her uncertainty at the situation. She looked towards the man who was currently berating Ghost. "Could we, uh, talk privately?" Her nervousness was evident not only in the lack of her usual confidence but also in the fact that she didn't even comment on her tail. She wasn't sure that she could have completely hidden her inner turmoil if she tried but knew that it would likely only work to her benefit in convincing Ghost of her sincerity so she didn't make the attempt.
Almost as an afterthought Meld extended a metal hand towards Allen Swift. "Pleasure to meet you Mr. Smith. My apologies at requesting your daughter's presence privately, its nothing personal." Her voice was distracted but her politeness was nevertheless unfailing.
"It's Swift and 'course it's personal." He growled and took a conceding step backward. He did not take Meld's hand. "You wouldn't have asked for privacy if it weren't." Meld was the sort of person parents had nightmares about their children befriending. Everything about her screamed bad influence. Not only did the girl have metal coming out her lip and nose and ears, her stinking arm was metal and the girl had a tail for goodness sakes. Nothing good ever came of those with tails.
Ghost was far too eager to drive a tolerant thorn in her father's side.
"Meld is my friend, Dad." She prickled at him, but turned an understanding face to Meld. "Of course. You want help carrying your stuff in?" It didn't matter why she was here, she just was. And she needed inside. Ghost was already straining to lift a backpack. Holy cow, what was in there? Refrigerators?
"Maya." He started forward to take the backpack from her.
"No." The word was firm and stubbornly Ghost hefted the bag onto her shoulder. Ee gads, she was gonna be sore tomorrow. "Would you like to see my room? No roommate or anything so it's plenty private." Ghost was so glad she'd stayed on the girl's hall. Now, with her dad staying in the adult hall, it was a whole lot less attractive to her. Also, he had nothing to complain about with her living alone on a hallway meant for girls only.
Ghost made a flourish with her hand that indicated that Meld was to go first through the open pedestrian gate. That would march Meld right under a huffing Allen Swift's nose.

If Meld's glare towards Ghost's father didn't have quite the same impact as it usual would, it was nevertheless enough to intimidate all but the most stalwart of individuals. She focused her baleful eyes upon the man as he refused to shake her hand, making no move towards violence or antagonism and yet making it perfectly known that any distaste that the man felt for her and her mutations was returned in kind and then some and that if circumstances were right she would have no qualms about eviscerating the man. After a moment, as the human was really only worth a moment's attention, Meld turned her attention back to Ghost.
"I don't think I need-" before she could finish her denial that she needed any assistance with her stuff, Ghost was there trying to lift her suitcase. Seeing her struggle with the weight of it Meld offered to take it from her. After all, Meld had the advantage of stronger than human metal limbs and Ghost did not. At least, it didn't appear as if super strength was among her powers.
"Your room would be fine," Meld agreed, far more tentative than usual. She walked in the direction indicated, mind all ready spinning with what she would say, how she would explain her situation. She wasn't sure whether it was better or worse that that most of her soon to be stated reasons for being here were true.
Ghost marched next to Meld and opened the mansion door for her. It was only after the Mansion door was closed and the visual link between her father and herself was severed that Ghost leaned heavily against the door. "This thing is heavy." She sounded very sad for the fact. It sort of did feel like her arms were going to fall off, though, so she set the burden down as gently as was possible for her. Which was a sort of plop. Hopefully she didn't just break something.
"Sorry. I just... he's trying. He really is." She hadn't entirely appreciated the look of death that had passed over Meld's face, but surely it was a passing thought. No one is able to keep every stray thought from their mind.
"I'm just up these stairs on the left hall, the girl's hall. Are you... wanting to stay for a while?" She was trying not to read into the baggage too much. She was also sort o stalling so she didn't have to pick up the bag again. Her arms were a sort of tingly jello at the moment. She just wasn't meant to carry anything that heavy... maybe she could with her mutation, though. She considered this carefully.

"Sorry about the weight," Meld said apologetically. As she followed Ghost she made careful observations about the building around her and the inhabitants walking around. It appeared much the same as the previous time she had been here except that there were, perhaps, a few more people wandering the halls. It was difficult to be certain of that, however, since she had only been here once before. Every step caused a light clanging noise as metal feet hit the floor.
"I know how parents can be." Meld shrugged. Her own parents were much the same way, entirely disrespectful towards mutants, including herself. Their lack of tolerance was, in large part, what had caused her to leave so long ago when her mutation had first manifested. She had dealt with them recently, however, returning home to announce that she was disowning them as she should have done at the moment she discovered she was a mutant. She hadn't seen them since nor did she particularly care what had happened to them.
"Are you... wanting to stay for a while?"
Meld took a deep breath. This was the question she had been waiting for and the question she had been dreading. But she was glad it had finally come, hopefully she would only have to explain herself once. "I was, um, hoping to." She let her discomfort and uncertainty show. "I had a sort of...difference of opinion with some of those at Sanctuary and I don't think I can stay there any more." All of it true, even if not the entire truth. Hopefully it would be enough.
"I was, um, hoping to. I had a sort of...difference of opinion with some of those at Sanctuary and I don't think I can stay there any more."
Really? Last time they had talked there seemed only a spark of hope that Meld and Ghost's ideals were overlapping. "Well, you wouldn't be the first to come from the Sancturay to the Mansion, and maybe you won't be the last." Kaz had once been an member of the Order, after all.
"I have to admit it's usually the other way around." She couldn't even remember all the faces that had started here and ended up there... she also couldn't help but wonder what each of them were up to. Especially Leila, the were dolphin that had been a spy in their midst.
Meld handled her own bag like it wasn't weighing anything at all. Ghost sighed and scooted the one she had carried to the side of the stairwell so that it wouldn't get trampled. "Just like before, we ask you don't harm any here at this school, human or mutant." Though who wanted to pick on the cute little kids was beyond Ghost. "Would you like a room mate or a single room? Girl's hall or adult?"
She asked the questions but popped off to the side hall to grab a resident's folder. She was still listening and she would still hear. When she came back with the folder Ghost considered the bag she had let down onto the floor. Now that her dad wasn't watching, she didn't have a thing to prove and it looked so much less inviting. "Can we come back for that?" She wanted to be a good hostess, but... it was really heavy and she didn't want to risk lifting it via wind.

Meld didn't have to feign the relief that came across her face at the confirmation that she would be allowed to stay at the Mansion. Had she been forbidden a room she wasn't exactly certain what she would have done. At this point someone at Sanctuary probably would have noticed her absence and even if they hadn't she wasn't really sure she wanted to go back anyway.
"Thank you Ghost. You have no idea how much I appreciate this." It was certainly interesting to learn that there had apparently been others from Sanctuary who had made their way here and it was a piece of information she filed away for later use. The fact that, apparently, Mansion dwellers had come to Sanctuary in the past was also a good sign, potentially making her job just a little easier.
"You have my word that I will harm no one at the school, human or mutant. Your humans here must certainly be tolerant of mutants and even if they weren't I don't harm children." And she hoped she would be able to say that for a long time to come. Children were the innocents of the world and if their upbringing had done them the misfortune of turning them against mutants than surely they could still be shown the truth of the mutants without all the prejudice. If it came down to it she would do what had to be done but she dearly hoped never to have to seriously harm a child.
"A single room would probably be best and an adult room." She didn't have much experience with roommates and wasn't sure how well she'd get along with one. Meld smiled in slight amusement at Ghost's reaction to the weight of her bag and instead of agreeing with her made certain the blades of her new tail were safely closed and curled the tail sightly around the handle of the bag, lifting it up. It wasn't quite a graceful move, belaying the newness of the appendage, but it accomplished what it was supposed to and she held the bag behind her, grinning in amusement at the action. Her eyes sparkled as she turned her grin to Ghost, shrugging her shoulders apologetically. She needed the practice using it anyway. Yes, that was her excuse. Couldn't have anyone see that she was more than a cold hearted killer and could actually smile and be amused now could she?
"Tolerance has a sort of negative connotation, don't you think? It implies that there is something irksome that you permit to exist. There's nothing unnatural about humans and mutants living harmoniously together in close quarters." Ghost shrugged and ducked back into the administrative hall to grab a key. By the time she was back Meld had her bag in hand (or rather, in tail) and amusement in her eyes.
"Or you could do that..." She hopped over Meld's extra appendage and then proceeded to take the stairs two at a time. "This way." Ghost had rather hoped Meld would be on the girl's hall with her, but even she was a little old to be staying amidst the teens and tweens. "Middle hall is adults." Ghost checked the tag on the key and matched it to the correct door number.
The key slid home. The door unlocked. Inside was something akin to a hotel room. All generic and matching colors of white. The room needed life. "Okay, so there is a bathroom in here." Ghost went to flick on the light and open the door to show it to Meld. Standard shower and toilet and sink, equally boring. "Obviously that's the bed and desk and all that. It's not much, but it should be enough, right?"
Ghost handed over the keys to Meld's very own room. She then handed the manilla folder to the other girl. "A map of the Mansion and a schedule of group meal times are on a piece of paper in the back. Help yourself to the fridge and pantry if you can't make it for a cooked meal. Also, If you don't mind, please fill out the paperwork in the front. It's normal stuff like name, previous address, mutation, and if your gift might unwittingly be hazardous to others. There is a clear container thing on the back of the headmistress' door so you can just drop it off whenever you get it done."
"As for the walls and stuff, you're free to paint to hang things up. Just don't accidentally demolish a wall or you'll be seeing more of your neighbor than you might care to see." Ghost pat the wall that backed up to the bathroom of the room next door.
She rocked from her heels to her toes and back again. Aaaand I think that is it. Need anything else?" Also in the packet would be the rules of the Mansion and Danger Room. Since Meld was over 16, after she registered for use, she could go in at any time if she wanted.

Meld couldn't help but smile at Ghost's description of the harmonious living arrangements of humans and mutants. She still thought it was more than a little naive, that even if some humans were ready to embrace such arrangements many were not. But it was a good image to have, a good goal. And she would help to achieve that goal, even if her methods would not always be as the other woman would approve of. But, it was her calling in life to do those things that others were unable to do and in the end, when Ghost's dream of mutants and humans living together was finally achieved, she would thank Meld for doing those things. If she ever learned that it was her doing at all, since the last reason Meld did as she did was for the recognition.
Meld followed Ghost and listened as she explained things. For the first time in a long while she felt true optimism though she didn't want to explore the feeling to closely. Was it, as she suspected, because she was finally, at long last, actually doing something productive? Or was it because she was just beginning to discover that The Order wasn't everything she had hoped it would be and she was finally getting the courage to leave its family and do something on her own...she hoped it wasn't the latter and refused to consider it.
"Um, thanks." Meld accepted the papers she was to fill out. "And I don't think my mutation is hazardous to others unless they try to sleep with me or something." Her attempt at humor though she was pretty sure it was a failed attempt. When was the last time she had attempted to be humorous anyway? She really couldn't remember.
"And I promise to demolish no walls or people or anything else." She grinned, showing she wasn't being serious. "And thanks again Ghost. I promise to prove to you that you will not regret accepting me here. I don't think I need anything else."
