The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

There was this big Peace Rally of some sort that Audrey had heard of on the news a few days ago and for some reason, this had intrigued her. Only a week ago, the young Shapeshifter had been trying to save an Anti-Mutant from being torn apart by two girls from what she later found out was the Sanctuary. More specifically, a little group inside that building that called themselves "Order". She'd been half-passed out at the time, so the information given by Jenny hadn't been too clear, but the fact that the Order was up to no good definitely was clear. Oh well, she wanted to go to that Rally anyway, maybe meet a few Mutants and get herself known a little better in the Mutant society. After two weeks, she had come a long way.
From being scared of other Mutants to actually wanting to meet some? Crazy huh? Unfortunately, Audrey wasn't finished with crazy. She may not know this at the time, but the rally today was going to change her next two weeks, change in more ways then she could ever imagine. So, why was Audrey walking towards the Mansion anyway? Well, she was hoping to find Jewel, Shana, or even both, and ask if they wanted to acompany her today. Maybe even Jenny, the two had gotten along well in Times Square, and then she'd been good help after the accident at the Jewelry store.
Today was a nice day, a little cloudy yes, but there was still sunshine peaking out sometimes. Audrey was dressed in a jean skirt that ended mid-thigh and a white blouse. To complete the look she had a silver necklace, bracelets and an anklet. To be honest this was more or less her formal look. She didn't like dresses or fancy black pants. This looked nice enough, and it would have to do for the Rally.
"Hello?" she said awkwardly, ringing the buzzer near the Gates. "This is Audrey Walker..." Yet, did anyone remember her? She was sure Jenny, Shana and Jewel would most likely recall the Shapeshifter, but who else knew her? Dominic? Yes... He might remember too, though they didn't really hang out much. Oh well, now feeling like an idiot for not saying much more, the young woman could only wait and hope her curly dark hair wasn,t going to be too messy from the wind.
The phone was silver. No flippy thing. No slidey thing. She'd learned her lesson from the first phone she'd accidentally trashed. Moving parts are just begging to be broken. So this one was simple. What they called a "candy bar" type. "No, no, no. You have got to be kidding me."
This was one of those days.
Ghost pulled her feet off the security desk and rubbed her long fingers through her hair. "You called Derryl? And Jean? Did you try--are you sure Aurum's gone? What? Deposition? Oh come on!" The buzzer for the front gate rang and she held up a single finger at the screen as if the girl waiting at the gate could see her and know to wait patiently while she figured out who to call and take care of the store until she could get there.
Wait. Her priorities were getting mixed here. Ghost looked more carefully at the screen. She didn't know the girl and she was on Mansion door duty. She had a job to do already. "Okay. Well hold down the fort. I have to get someone to cover for me here. No-no don't close early we did that when the Time's Square thing happened. No. I'll be there. I will!" And she hung up. What else could she do?
Ghost pressed the button, "You wearing comfortable shoes?" Her voice crackled over the intercom. This was so wrong. The X-men should have her x-communicator for even thinking it. "Sorry. Forget I asked, I'll be right out." She ran through the Mansion at the speed of legs until she found Johnny. Good ol' Johnny. She promised him cookies nad cake and anything that would get him in that security booth instead of her and then Ghost jogged out to meet the new kid.
Slightly winded (which was a funny concept for an air elemental) Ghost reached the gate. "Hey, are you looking for a Mansion tour? If that is the case, I'm really sorry, but I have a really, really insanely huge favor to ask you." Wait she was getting ahead of herself here. "Hi." She offered the other girl her hand. "I'm Ghost. Do you have a car or should we walk and talk on the way to the bus?" Ghost could whisk her away by air if she wasn't sure she was already freaking the girl out.
It didn't take too long, maybe a little longer then others would have expected, but to Audrey it wasn't long at all. A woman's voice carried out somewhere nearby, asking about comfortable shoes. She glanced down at her white heels, no those weren't comfortable shoes. Not in the slightest. To her relief though, the voice changed her mind, and a few minutes later, there was a woman with pretty short white hair running toward her. "I was jus-" she smiled a little when the woman cut her, definitely in a hurry.
A favor huh? Audrey was good at that, if it wasn't something that cost her a lot of money (She didn't have a Job yet, even after so many Interviews) or took a lot of time. Oh, one more thing: It really shouldn't be something ilegal. She was done with those days. "No, I don't have a car..."[/color] she drifted off again when Ghost started walking down the street.
Fine, then they could go to the Bus... Ghost seemed like an exciting person to go to the Rally with. "Before you get me involved in anything," Audrey said, "Could you please explain what this favor is? I know you're in a hurry... I don't mind helping out, though it would be helpful knowing what it is I'm going to be doing."
Another pause as Audrey kept up with Ghost's brisk pace, "I came to the Mansion to ask a few of my friends if they wanted to go to the Rally later, but your thing sounds more important." she explained, returning to the question about needing a tour.
Ghost walked to the the stop. It wasn't too far, but it was still a walk all the same. She checked her phone again and was grateful that they had made it in time. Unless the bus had somehow snuc by while she was conning Johnny to ge-- "Wait did I introduce myself?" Yeah. She was definitely frazzled, but she couldn't for the life of her remember if the girl had said her name.
"Are you gifted or are your talents more huma-- oh dear, those shoes are going to hurt." She eyed the white pumps. Ghost had made the mistake of working on heels before. Not only did she suck at the whole balancing thing, but they seemed to suck all the grace out of her system leaving her with sore feet and an achey back.
The bus arrived and Ghost pulled her new found companion on before she ever got around to explaining what was happening. "Right. The favor, well you see I'm in a tight spot. I own this bookstore and there is this author coming... Well it's getting to be a big deal." For an explanation, that one sure didn't explain much. Ghost brought her amber eyes back to bear on her companion. "Did you say your name yet?"
When Audrey mentioned the peace rally Ghost actually laughed a sharp chirping sound. "Yeah. That rally? It's at my store. And you just got hired if your shoes are up to it. Want to work Coffee or Sales? Both requires you to be on your feet, but right now I got no one." Could this bus drive any slower?
Man Ghost seemed to be distracted, it kind of made Audrey want to laugh, though she didn't. 'Cause that would be impolite of her. Maybe the White-haired woman had very good reasons!
They climbed on the Bus after Ghost commented on the white shoes, it wasn't as if she'd never walked a lot in Heels before, she'd live through it, tolerating pain wasn't that hard, it would be good practice for what she planned on doing sometime in the near future. She could maybe practice tonight, see if anything changed over the months she hadn,t used her powers. Oh, she still hadn't answered Ghost about her powers had she? It was a typical question to be asking in the Mutant society, and Audrey was definitely getting used to it. Shapeshifting, or any word close to it, had come out of her mouth more these past weeks then it had her entire life.
"I'm a Shapeshifter, but I don't use my Powers very often. They can be quite a... pain." she made it sound a little like a joke, but honestly it was nothing but the truth. Her powers were very painful, the pain she'd have tonight after walking in these heels was nothing compared to what Shapeshifting did to her. Though, the pain went completely away after the Transformation was done.
Then came the vague explanation. Bookstore huh? The young Mutant loved reading, not to mention she was very social. This could be fun. "Oh, I can definitely lend a hand! Would this be permenant or only for the day? If you really need some help... I've been looking for a Job for the past month and a half." And she was getting very desperate for money, having spent her last bills on these shoes the other day. Now she was left to eat last week's chicken and whatever else she found around the kitchen.
It was kind of gross, but as poor as she was right now, she wanted none of her siblings' help. Not to mention the fact that they would probably ignore her calls. They'd been nice to her growing up, her eldest sister even giving her a roof over her head after their parents had died. But deep down, she knew they were scared of her. They hated their Mutant sister. Her own family were Mutant haters and there was no way they would give her money, even if she was stupid enough to ask.
She didn't care though. She didn't need a family. She never really did need one. "I did have a Job as a Cashier once back in Louisiana. I had some training so it shouldn't be to hard. If you need me with Sales I'll do that, if you need me with Coffee I can do that too." She was at her new Boss' desposal now. Her lips twitched in a smile. Even if this wasn't going to be forever, finally she had a Job!
"I have to warn you that this store is very special to me, Shapeshifter." Why was it that she cold remember the girl's power but not her name? "It's neutral territory. No fighting, sorry if your powers are testy but we'll be trying to minimize usage of flashy powers anyway -- it sometimes makes the humans squidgey. Honestly, I told Sam a million times not to bring the ice golems. They even freak me out." Seriously. Did they have brains? And what was with their eyes? Creep out.
"What was I saying?" She looked out the window and practically bounced on the seat. Not too far now. Janni was gonna kill her for making her stay late on her own. "Neutral Territoy. Right. So whatever you views on humans, you'll leave that at the door. I've even called for a cease-fire between mutants. It wouldn't do to have them torching the place would it?" No. It wouldn't. "I'm not gonna lie to you, shifter. I need good people. I can't be at the store all day everyday and I need to know that I have capable hands behind the register. Capable hands that know how to diffuse situations and defend an ideal as well as the merchandise."
"I'll give you my cash register tonight. We'll call it a test run." It was a lot to trust to a stranger practically right off the street. Ghost was hoping that she was at the Mansion for a reason though. She had said she had friends there, right? Did she mention her name yet?
"Ah. Here we go." The bus stopped and Ghost jumped out of her seat like something bit her. She waved to the bus man and walked right past a growing line of people on the Manhattan street. "Welcome to the Full Circle!" Ghost passed by the classic rotating door that the store was known for and went for the side door, the handicapped entrance that was the straightest shot to the circular enclosure where the antique cash register was housed.
A rumpled looking employee popped the gate that gave the illusion of a perfectly circular enclosure and stepped out. "About time!"
"Thank you, Janni! Meet our newest employee... uhh... yeah!" She still couldn't remember the blasted name. Janni handed Audrey her green canvas apron. "In those shoes? Good luck."
Ghost bustled around to the back disappearing for a moment to get a fresh cash drawer. She returned in record time, only dropping a roll of dimes once to slow her down. "Okay so it's your typical scanner deal here. Pops up the old timey numbers on the register. You may want to keep the drawer quiet when the speakers are speaking, but other than that - you know what to do. I hope." Ghost grinned "If you need me, I'll be at the coffee bar." Ghost pointed to the other register at the other end of the store, across the temporary platform and grouping of chairs. "Enjoy your front seat." And wit that Ghost was slipping through the crowd to open the abandoned coffee section.
Audrey smiled, only realizing she hadn't said her name when Ghost called her Shapeshifter. She was about to say it, when Ghost continued talking about everything else. Though honestly, it wasn't much of a shock her name had gone unsaid. Being dragged in a bus by a complete stranger who needed you tended to make you forget some important things. "I'll do a good Job, don't worry. I'm definitely not the type of girl to pick fights, especially not in public places." There was a pause while Audrey glanced out the window.
"I'm a Mutant/Human peace supporter all the way. I don't use my powers often either, but I do have some trainning in self-defense so if there is any trouble I'm notr entirely useless."[/b] She thought back of when she'd said she didn't use her powers often. 'I never use my powers' would be a better choice of words for now; though she hoped to change that. Maybe practice enough so that it became easier, faster and perhaps with less agony? Who knows, maybe she could eventually do it.
Then she remembered the name Sam being used earlier, and felt interest bubbling in the pit of her stomach. Ice Golems? This Sam must really be awesome. "I hope you don't mind me asking, since we're on a tight schedule and everything, but who's Sam?" Yes, she was a bit nosy sometimes, but Ice Golems, come on any Mutant who did giant Ice monsters were awesome! Anyway, Cash register sounded good, it was easy enough. "I'm Audrey, by the way." There, it was about time Ghost knew the name of her savior.
That was about the time when the bus stopped. Audrey fallowed the white-haired woman out of the Bus and passed a line of people. They were at the Bookstore, and honestly Audrey was facinated. The two ladies walked inside, and already Audrey could feel her excitement boiling up inside. She'd never been this important before, it felt good. She was going to help out with an entire Rally in New York! That was big, and it made her feel proud.
"About time!"
It was Audrey's new Co-worker...Janni? Yes, that was it. "I'm Audrey." she repeated for the second time, not even minding the fact that Ghost had forgotten it already. Who cares really, she'd seemed pretty busy back there and it just slipped her mind. Audrey had those moments too, so she could relate. The Shapeshifter took the apron with a smile, thanking Janni quickly. "My shoes are fine, I can just take 'em off it I need too." she laughed.
"Okay so it's your typical scanner deal here. Pops up the old timey numbers on the register. You may want to keep the drawer quiet when the speakers are speaking, but other than that - you know what to do. I hope."
"Alright, it's all good, thanks Ghost!" And with that said, Audrey Walker was no longer unemployed. In fact, she was working at a Bookstore that seemed to be quite popular and perfect for both Humans and Mutants who wanted to get along. It was the perfect place for Audrey since she had those exact views, with her family almost disowning her, it was hard for her to see Humans and Mutants fighting. Normally Mutants who had Anti-Mutant family were most likely to be like the Order girls she'd met, but Audrey wasn't...
She wanted to keep the other Mutants in the future from being treated differently. To do that though, the young woman needed to do her share of work by showing everyone that, Hey, Mutants aren't mean and scary! They're just as nice, just as helpful as anyone else. That was her plan, and if she could fufil that Goal in life, she would be happy.
Ghost hadn't been planning on being here during the rally, but in all actuality, she was glad to have ended up tending the coffee bar. She got a first row seat on respected authors and local politicians who were talking about peaceful resistance, how to participate in potentially violent situations in a non violent way.
It was useful information and, though there weren't as many people as Ghost had hoped, there were still enough to fill at least half the chairs. And half the chairs full of people meant that Ghost was kept hopping for quite a while with the people coming and going. Hopefully the new recruit was kept hopping too since she was running the till and that meant she'd be taking in all the money tonight.
Ghost wouldn't necessarily blame the girl she'd shanghaied if the girl took all the money of the day. It'd be a blow to the store, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. Ghost was pretty hopeful that she'd found an honest one. She sounded earnest, but she usually trusted people more than she should. Today would tell. When the rally ended and the people started trickling out, Ghost closed up her side of the store, washing cups and tidying up before making her way over to check on her new found friend.
"So, did you survive?" Ghost, despite being the owner, was in a matching green canvas apron with obvious spill spots from the hectic night. It was quite obvious she still needed to hire more people if she was still having to hop in like this.
Ghost's Bookstore was hard to manage, she didn't blame the other employees for escaping work today and leaving Ghost to pick someone off the street! Actually, it was hard the first dozen of Customers, but afterward it became easier. She had developed some kind of pattern, and although the line became more and more impatiant as time went on, it got faster too. Thirty seconds per person, tops. Maybe the fussier ones or the troublesome ones took more time, but other then that she was doing good.
Anyway, a lot of people were coming in compared to what Audrey had first thought when she'd heard of the Rally. They were Mutants and Humans alike, ready to help out with the entire Peace thing. Audrey could tell some of these people might not be all that into the Peace thing, heck a good quarter might even be Anti-Mutants or Anti-Humans, but she didn't really try to pick them out. Everyone was welcomed today as long as they didn't cause trouble. Some had fur covering their body, others had wings, she even saw a few that had tails. It was fun speaking to a few, just general conversation as she took their money... It was new to her, speaking to so many Mutants all at once.
Sll and all, it was fun though. She could listen to the Authors and Politicians speaking a little further away, and have a good view of them too. She could get used to this quite quickly actually. Bookstores were fun, Audrey loved books. "Muffin Miss?" She didn't even notice who had offered, simply taking it out of politeness. It didn't taste half bad either. "Thank you, those are very good." she said, "It's no problem at all." and the man left. If the Shapeshifter's mind wouldn't have been at other places, she might've noticed the weird way he'd said those last words.
The End of the Rally
Audrey's elbows rested on the counter, her eyes trailing behind the crowd as it made its way out. "Hey Ghost, yes I did survive. It was actually quite fun. Do you host many events like this one here? she asked, straightening up so that she looked a little more formal at least. This could be her Boss next time she came in here, she had to look decent enough to have that chance.
