The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was a nice day out, nice and moderate which was just perfect for Dominic. The bitter cold of the winter had run it's course for now and the blankets of snow were now replaced by greenery of the grassy lawns and the leaves on the trees. Since it was now spring, there was no use in staying cooped up in the house and so Dominic sat under the tree just near the lake over seeing the scenery. Once thing he loved dearly was nature. Part of it could be traced back to his powers and connection with animals, but even still, the beauty of the outdoors was just too wondrous to ignore, even if it was just in the back area of the mansion, there was still wildlife to observe. The Ducks gliding across the surface of the lake, the squirrels scurrying through the branches of the trees. The smallest things most people took for granted was just pleasing to the eyes to Dominic and he decided to combine his love of nature with his love of art. With a sketchbook in his lap and a pencil in hand, Dominic started to sketch the image of the lake on paper. Pausing in his sketching, the 16 year old reached over to his side where he had laid down a back of chocolate chip Teddy Grahams to snack on while he was outside. Opening the bag he reached in to grab one and before he could even put one in his mouth, he found himself surrounded by squirrels, who were seeming begging for a snack as well. One squirrel leaped and snatched the bag of cookies from Dominic's hand. and attempted to skitter away into the tree, but with quick reflexes, Dominic snatched the rodent by it's fluffy tail.
"Nice try..." the blonde smirked holding the squirrel upside down and bringing it to eye level. "You know, if you would have waited patiently, perhaps I would have given you some, but it looks like you wanted the whole bag for yourself. It's not nice to steal..., now is it?" the boy asked speaking to the squirrel who merely blinked it's black eyes. "...right. So now I'm debating on what I should do. Perhaps I should forgive your thieving ways and share my snack? Or maybe...eh?" Dominic noticed the squirrel had stopped moving and now hung still as if it had gone into a trance. It was weird...but when he thought about it, not as weird to him since he had seen this before. This whole time he had completely forgotten about his powers and he was touching this squirrel with his bare hands. On physical contact, the animal Dom would touch would trance for the minute it took for it's DNA to be transferred into Dominic's body. Then the tingling sensation began to go through his hand and eventually his whole body. "Oh god..."he said as he dropped the squirrel and then found himself falling to his knees, holding his head as he suddenly had craving for seeds and nuts. Each time he had absorbed an animal's DNA or would use it, his own mind would clash with the animal's mind and he would have to fight to stay in control. And it seemed that this time would prove to be difficult as Dominic suddenly found himself scurrying up the tree and perching himself on a high branch and helping himself to some of the acorns that grew on them.

The mansion grounds still amazed Luke every time he got a chance to wander them. They had been impressive that first night so long ago when Calley had brought him here but now that he'd come to realize just how much land there was they were even more impressive. Not only did the mansion provide a safe haven for mutants but it also provided a safe haven for plenty of wildlife. Squirrels, ducks, wild rabbits, and even the occasional goose would find their way into the mansion lawn where they were protected from most predators by the large wall that surrounded everything. Sure they still had to keep an eye out for birds of prey but for the most part they could live a more peaceful existance.
Well, peaceful except for the occasional mutant that decided to intrude in their realm. As Luke was walking along he heard the sound of squirrels chattering away like there was something wrong. Walking that direction he extended his sonar, finally sweeping the correct tree to find a least ten or fifteen different squirrels chittering away at a man that had climbed the tree and was apparently eating the acorns.
"Who in the world eats acorns?" Luke muttered as he walked in that direction, "They don't even taste good."
Drawing closer he could easily make out the figure of a slightly younger man that seemed just as at home in a tree as any squirrel might. From the way he was perched on a limb and digging into the nuts, Luke even had to wonder if maybe he was a were-squirrel or something like that. It would make sense considering how the young man was acting.
"You all right up there?" Luke called up easily, hands tucked in the pockets of his jeans as his sunglass covered eyes looked up in the man's general direction, "Your friends seem a little concerned about your presence."
As he continued to make noms noms out of the acorns, Dominic heard the voice of another coming from the ground below. The squirrel's instinct told him to run, but all the while he continued to dominate over the animal's mind with his own. "I'm...Fine...just give me a minute...." he stuttered and let out a small growl before leaping from the branches with squirrel like agility and landing on his back. "...Owe." the boy whimpered, holding back tears of pain. The fall wasn't that far, but still hurt and Dominic cringed as he sat back up and looked over to the man in the sunglasses.
"Sorry...Things like that happen..." he paused and picked a chunk of acorn out of his teeth. and skittered over to sniff the man's shoe and twitched his nose a bit. "Gah, stop it! Deep breaths! Deep....Breaths..." Dominic inhaled and exhaled slowly to clear his mind so that his own would gain dominance once again. After about a minute, the teen seemed to be okay and had successfully assimilated the Squirrel's DNA. "Uh...., yeah..." Dominic blushed with embarrassment for his actions and hopped back up to his feet, scratching the back of his head. "I'm sorry about that. It's complicated. Power issues..." he said and extended his hand out to the older guy.
"My name is Dominic. I'm kinda new cause I just recently came here to live with my brother Sam...or Cold Steel...which ever name you know him by."

It was slightly amusing to watch the boy go through his various actions. Especially since Luke couldn't understand exactly why he was doing any of it. Was he really a were-squirrel? Did he struggle with the more feral side of his power or something?
"All of us have power issues from time to time." Luke said with a slight smile as he watched the young man apparently regain control of himself. At least now he was acting more like a man and less like an animal.
"Nice to meet you Dominic. My name's Luke." The blind man replied as he gave the younger man a firm handshake. Suddenly what he had said at the end clicked and Luke raised an eyebrow curiously.
"You're Sam's brother? I didn't even know CS had a brother!" The surprise as evident in his voice as he swiftly ran through all the various conversations he and CS had had. He couldn't remember one time when he had ever mentioned a brother or even a friend that was coming to stay at the mansion. Maybe he wasn't as close to CS as he thought.
"How long have you been here?" Luke finally asked, "I don't actually live here at the mansion so that's probably why I haven't met you yet."
"You're Sam's brother? I didn't even know CS had a brother!"
"Eh heh...Yep. That I am..." Dominic nodded while shaking Luke's hand. "It's okay. It's a long and complicated story, but he is my brother, even though the only thing we really have in common are genes. Other than that...." Dominic sighed and poked out his tongue in a raspberry. "I've only been here for a few days. Not even a week." he said taking a seat back down in the grass and looking out towards the lake. "Its been a weird adjustment. At first I was skeptical of staying, but this place is growing on me. I especially love the this lake view. There's just something relaxing about the outdoors and...oh dear," he paused before going into a hippie rant about nature.
"So...you have powers too? Mind if I ask what they are? Do you shoot lasers from your eyes or something or are those sunglasses just for style?" he joked.

Nature deffinately had a beauty to it that most people failed to appreciate any more so it was nice to hear someone that appreciated it. Especially someone that was as young as Dominic. There were times that Luke wished he had a closer understanding and relationship with the nature around him and there were deffinately times that he wished he had eyes that could appreciate the beauty of nature like everyone else. Sure, Luke could appreciate things because of their sounds and scents but his sonar didn't look at things the same way a normal person's sight did. It was difficult to pick up beauty with his sonar, though not impossible. After all, he could make out a woman's figure quite nicely.
"No, these glasses aren't just to be stylish." Luke replied with a quiet chuckle as he began to reach up for them, "They're actually more for everyone else's comfort than anything. Blind eyes a lot of times make people uncomfortable." He continued as he lifted his glasses, allowing Dominic to see the cloudiness of his blue eyes before dropping the tinted lenses back down.
"Apparently my mutation either caused my blindness or knew I was going to be blind and compensated. I produce a sonar that allows me to 'see' in a manner of speaking. Of course I can't make out colors or anything like that but I do see a full three hundred and sixy degrees around me so I guess it's a trade off."
Over the years Luke had come to appreciate both the strengths and weakness of his ability. Sure there were times when it was extremely frustrating to not see colors and things like other people did, especially when it came to Raina, but there were deffinate strengths to his sonar as well. It made him the perfect man for the job of being a rear guard and it also gave him the ability to quite literally see around corners. As long as there was no metal doors or concrete walls to get in the way he could see things that would be hidden from most people. There was no way that anyone was going to be using the shadows to hide from his sonar!
"So how did you hear about the mansion since you and your brother aren't all that close?" Luke finally asked, deciding to continue and keep his new power growth under wraps for the time being. Until he had it mastered he didn't want to reveal it to a lot of people. He hadn't even told Sam about it quite yet. As far as he knew, only Raina and Sara even knew that something had changed.
Dominic looked up at Luke listening to the man speak about the use of his glasses and when he lifted them up, Dominic couldn't help but feel a bit bad as he saw Luke's eyes. He couldn't imagine going through life with out sight. The scene before them was beautiful and there were many other wondrous sites to behold, and Dominic hoped to see those also, but this Luke guy wouldn't get to have that privilege Well, to see the colors anyway.
"360 degrees? I guess there's no way someone can sneak up on you," Dominic joked. "And your eyes don't bother me. You don't have to wear them for me. Everyone has their flaws, so I don't know why people judge others by their appearance. It kind of makes me sick," he said bringing his knees to his chest and wrapping his arms around his legs.
"I had heard about this mansion before by word of ear, but the only reason I ever came was for my brother," Dominic answered Luke. "Kind of glad I did come. Not only do I have Sam now, but I can get help with my powers. As you can see..errr....well, at least with your sonar you could have I guess, I have a lot of trouble with them. I absorbed a squirrel's DNA moments before you had arrived and saw me going nutty in that tree. I involuntarily absorb an animal's DNA through physical contact and I guess I can choose to use whatever abilities it has. As you saw when I scurried out that tree like clock work using the squirrel's agility and speed. Thing is when I absorb or use a power I gotta fight that animal's mind cause it wants to take control. Kinda scares me a bit. I can usually control it but I'm afraid of losing my mind one day and hurting someone. That's the last thing I wanna do."

"Thankfully around here," Luke said with a smile as he kind of nodded back toward the mansion building, "people don't judge me because of my abilities but I've still gotten a few strange reactions because of my eyes. Mainly its because they just don't know how to react. Sure they've seen people with strange physical manifestations for their power but they've rarely seen someone that had a physical problem that was apparently caused by their mutation. Pretty much everyone accepts the idea of a sonar that can let me see all around but they don't want to think about the fact that I can't see color or anything like that. It's just to strange for most."
It was at that point that Dominic finally launched into an explanation about exactly what his power was. It made sense that along with their strengths he would also be absorbing the animal's weaknesses.
"Have you done much mental training since you got here to the mansion?" Luke asked slowly. He could still remember how much time he had put into learning to really control his sonar and be able to turn it off completely for short periods of time. The memories of all of the headaches and annoyance were still relatively fresh but in the end he had been able to achieve what was necessary. "It takes a lot of work and discipline but you can train the mind just as much as you can train the body. I had to learn how to control my sonar which was all mental ability and it was tough. Took me sevearl weeks to even get some semblance of control but I had to do it afte rI found out that my sonar could actually hurt ceratni people. I couldn't let my power hurt others if there was any way to prevent it."
"Training my mind? Nah, I haven't done any of that. I haven't done anything really. I haven't even been leaving my room until recently. I'm still getting used to actually having people around. Especially Sam," Dominic replied remembering the past year or so he had been alone at the orphanage he had been sent too after being abandoned by his anti-mutant foster parents. "I will soon though! I mean I want to have some piece of mind. To know that I will be in control every time I use my powers and that I won't lose it and maul someone." he said and then asked Luke.
"Do you ever regret being a mutant? I mean, if you could, would you trade your abilities so that you could be normal? So that you could actually see in color?"

"There are moments when I wish I could see like everyone else." Luke admitted after a moment's consideration, his expression thoughtful, "Especially since I fell in love with a certain red haired teacher here at the school. The only erason I know she has red hair is because she and other people have described how she looks. There are times walking down the street that I wish I could see how beautiful she looks when I hear other people make a comment. People speak of the beauty of a sunset or how wonderful a particular piece of artwork looks. Things that most people take for granted are just like a dream for me because I can't even really imagine what it would be like."
Luke's sonar continued to sweep the grounds around him as he spoke. Sure he could 'see' things because of his mutant ability. If he was close enough he could even make out the expressions on people's faces but it wasn't the same. Sure this was all he had ever known but he still knew deep down that there was something more.
"What about you? Ever wish you were just a regular teenager that could be doing what everyone else does?"
"Red haired teacher? You mean Raina, right? I haven't met her yet, but I've hear of her from Sam. She seems to have a good reputation." Dominic said and nodded as Luke spoke. "It's true that a lot of people do take the things they have for granted. Their senses, their friends and family...their lives period. People think they have it so bad when they could be way worse off..." he sighed and then began to think hard as Luke asked him the same question he had asked. Did Dominic wish he was normal? When he really thought about it...it was a complicated answer.
"Yes, and no..." he began. "I think that as mutants, we're blessed and cursed. Blessed with cool powers that most normal boys and girls wish they could have because lets face it, who didn't want to be a super powered person when they were a kid? Except I always thought I'd get Telekinesis or Psionic blasts instead of having to fight the urge to groom myself with my tongue. The dark side of being a mutant is the discrimination and being shunned by society. After my parents died, my life was getting half way back to normal until these powers came and the foster family didn't want a 'demon' in their house. Then again, the positive side that if I wasn't alone in that orphanage watching tv, I probably would have never seen the coverage of that Valentine's day ball and I wouldn't have been reunited with my bro." he smiled."Bitter sweet, really."
"You know now that I think about it, if I was in your shoes, I probably wouldn't mind being blind. Sure there are lots of beautiful things to gaze at but there are so many ugly things I wish I didn't have to see. Like every time I watch the news, to see some poor mutant killed in a hate crime, or not just mutants but everything since it ticks me off to see animals abused and mistreated as well. The world is a sad place. That's probably why I spend so much time in my room so I don't have to deal with it. I rather just stay in my own world in my head. It's not as screwed up."

Luke smiled slightly and nodded at Dominic when he asked whether the red haired teacher was Raina. She was a very special woman and even without his sight to appreciate her beauty in its entirety Luke felt lucky to be in a relationship with her. He had stood by her side through the situation in Canada and he knew she would do the same for him if he ever needed her to.
"The grass is always greener on the other side." Luke quoted the old adage with a smile after Dominic finished talking, "And while I may not be able to see anything on TV, I've seen more than my share of hate crimes. You see, my sonar is both a blessing and a curse. It allows me to see but it also allows me to see different. With concentration I can penetrate drywall and see what's happening to match the screams I can hear."
Shrugging slightly, Luke turned his face toward the sun, enjoying the feeling of its warmth shining down on his face. "It all comes down to a decision. Either you ignore the world because of all the bad things within it, or you pay attention to the world while doing your best to focus on the good things instead of the bad."
Turning face back around so that his sunglass covered eyes were looking for Dominic, Luke gave the younger man a quick smile. "I'm sure I'll see you around the mansion or around town. Sam and I seem to bump into each other on occasion."
Dominic nodded at Luke's words of wisdom. The older man did have a point that one should look at the positives in life, rather than the negatives which was true when Dominic thought about it. For now he didn't really have that many positives besides having found Sam and haven been taken in and given a place to live. There were some people and mutants who didn't have a home, food to eat or even a long lost older brother. The last few years were a bit rough, but now it was time to think about whats ahead in his future.
"Yeah, I'll be around here. I'm still trying to get used to the feel of this place. I don't know about town, though. New York City is huge" Dominic chuckled. "I eventually venture out to it though. The city seems like a cool place. Way diff from Colorado Springs. It was nice meeting you. Mr. Luke. I'd like to chat with you again sometime. Though if you bump into Sam a lot like you said, I'm sure we will."

"It was nice talking to you too Dominic but please, stick to just Luke. I have to use the whole 'Mister' thing for business and official stuff, not here." Luke said with a smile as he turned to wander back towards the mansion. It was a beautiful day and the blind man planned on enjoying at least a little longer outside as he walked across the vast mansion grounds., "Take care of yourself!" He called back over his shoulder, "I'll see you again."
