The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Jorge
In the sunlit halls of the mansion, Jorge Cervantes, detective for the NYPD Mutant Related Crimes unit wandered in search of the kitchen. He had shown up early in the morning to bring Gemma some doughnuts and coffee, even though the mansion had a fully equipped kitchen. He could have arrested himself for that blunder, but it was enough to cause a grin to appear on his girlfriend’s face. That was the most that any man could ask for.
Now though, Jorge was wandering the halls in search of the kitchen after all. Apparently the people at the pastry shop had forgotten to give the man the cream he had asked for the coffee. Luckily he had learned that there was some cream in the kitchen. He was not surprised by this. After all, working in a school filled with teenage mutants with budding powers would require all teachers and staff to down as much coffee as was necessary. So that was the detective’s mission…find the creamer!
The detective was dressed casually for this early in the morning, wearing a short sleeved, green shirt with a long sleeved white undershirt and black slacks. Normally the detective was decked out for work in his suit or at least his leather jacket, but today was a one of his rare mornings off where he could dress more casually than he was used to. Still the detective did have a grizzly air that was sure to startle most passerbys.
What did not know was that today was a free day for the students so as he drove up, most were running around, playing outside, or relaxing around the living room of the mansion and simply catching up on some much needed television. He had to smirk at this as he watched several of them enjoying their day off from lessons and basking in the free morning air. He remembered days like that when he was still going to school. It was funny how refreshing a free day can be for a young soul. In many ways, he felt like that now as he finally found his way to the kitchen.
As soon as he stepped in, he spied that no one was around. This was surprising considering that he would assume free days meant a free attack on the fridge. But taking it as a sign of luck, Jorge moved his way over to the fridge and pulled it open. Immediately he spotted that white and blue container that sat in the midst of the cool breath of the fridge. Taking it up, he made a mental note to bring it back down after their coffee when he heard the smallest of sniffles.
sniffle…
He turned and immediately spied a young lady, situated in the corner of the kitchen and sniffled and cried to herself. Both seemed to jump slightly in surprise at one another. The detective was immediately put on alert as he watched the young blonde, she couldn’t have been no older than 12 or 13 as she sat against a wall, hugging her knees and crying gently. Her cheeks stained with tears and her eyes puff, Jorge put on as gentle a smile as he could muster and slowly moved over to her.
“Hey honey,” he said soothingly. “What’s wrong? Why are you upset today?”
The girl said nothing as she sniffled and tried to keep another torrent of tears deep inside her chest. Jorge felt his heart break a little as she watched the young girl cry. As he came closer, he knelt down close and tried to still sound encouraging.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to tell me.” he said with a warm smile. “But I am a cop, that means I have to at least try and make you smile.” He said as he looked up and spied an full, individual bottle of drinking water.
He snagged it up, cracked open the cap and set it between himself and the young girl. He gently held his hand over the opening and with a flick of his wrist, the water inside responded. In a twitch the water inside gurgled before it jumped out of the bottle. Very slowly the water hovered in mid-air, globs of the clear liquid casting tiny rainbows as it passed through the light that filtered through the open windows in the kitchen. The floating water then began to combine until three, equally sized globes of water floated between them, casting prisms even grander than from before. With another twitch, Jorge pulled the spheres close to his open hands, smiled at the young girl and…began to juggle.
Spheres of pure water flew by one another as he tossed them back and forth with his abilities, trying to bring the young girl at least a moment of happiness. The detective had to at least try.
While everyone else had the day off Kate had training with Sam. Sure, she had to expend energy every day but that didn’t that mean she had to train everyday too. All she had to do was go into the danger room and throw off a couple of fire balls and be done with it, but nooooo, Sam had to insist that she actually put the time in the danger room to good use and do a little training. So now, at 10 in the morning, Kate was starving. She had finished breakfast a little over 2 hours ago and now she was hungry again. Thanks a lot Mr. Johnson.
Kate walked into the kitchen on auto pilot. She did this every day, 8 or 9 times a day. It was like second nature at this point. She looked at the kitchen and thought for a moment before deciding she needed something comforting and warm. She pulled down the tea kettle and the box of earl gray she had brought from home. She had conveniently hidden it in the back of a cabinet and so far no one had used it other than her. Without even noticing the people in the corner of the room she filled the kettle and put in on the burner. She may have completely made lunch without noticing them if she hadn’t of turned to put on her gloves, that she had been stashed in a bag in the island that read, ‘For Katherine Finch-Hatton’s Mutational Required Use Only’
Upon turning Kate saw something she really hadn’t expected. In the corner there was a man juggling water. Granted in the mansion this wasn’t exactly unusual, but it wasn’t Sam and he was the only person she knew that had anything to do with water, so she was a little confused.
She chose to not think much on it and walked over only to notice that he was trying to cheer up a sad little girl. A sad little girl she knew.
Kate kneeled down next to the girl and Jorge, “Maddie?” Kate and Madeline had met previously in the music room when Kate heard her practicing. Kate was surprised since she thought that no one even knew the piano was there let alone used it. They bonded over home sickness and music and Kate had taken to helping Maddie practice and learn new pieces ever since, she was really becoming a regular piano instructor.
Kate placed her hand on the young girl’s knee, “I know how you feel, dear. I miss home too, but you have to know that your parents sent you here so you won’t be alone. There are lots of people who know what you’re going through and want to help. Your Mum and Dad only wanted you to be happy and safe, and this place is good for that.” Maddie looked up into Kate’s kind and smiling face, “How about this. Why don’t you take my phone,” Kate reached into her pocket and pulled out the phone in question as she spoke, “and go upstairs to my room and call your Mum. I am just going to eat a quick lunch and then I will be right up and we can watch some movies. How does that sound?” Kate knew how the young girl felt. It was horrible to be in a new place far from home and all alone. Kate didn’t know what she would do without Gawain or Maya to bother when she was feeling a little home sick. The least she could do was be that person for Maddie. The girl hadn’t done anything wrong to be sent here, she just had a mutation that needed a little management that her parents couldn’t provide. Hers was actually one of the better stories around the mansion.
Maddie eyed the phone before taking it, hugging Kate and walking out of the room in the direction of upstairs.
Kate stood and looked at the man for the first time. She knew she recognized him, but wasn’t sure where from. Maybe she had just seen him around the mansion, but in any case it was still polite to introduce herself, “Sorry about that. She hasn’t been here long and her family was rather close. She isn’t exactly taking the move well. I mean how can you when you’re so young. I’m Kate by the way,” And then it hit, Halloween, “It’s nice to see you again. It’s Jorge right?”

Jorge
Jorge had been in mid juggle, twirling expertly those spheres of delicate water in the air above his head. It really did look quite magical. The spheres of liquid shimmered and casts reflected rays of light that bounced around the entire kitchen. It was a display that could be written about in fantasy novels or spoken of in legends, about a man with a will over the most abundance force on the planet and how easily he toyed with it for the simple purpose of making a young girl smile. Not that Jorge was some deity or grand magician. He was only a mutant who had a soft spot for crying children.
The detective was trying his best and for a second it almost seemed like he was going to succeed. Her eyes followed the spheres as the danced about, but before he knew it, an interloper had come it.
Girl with the British accent seemed to know the crying child and immediately made the connection to what was wrong with her. So it was a case of homesickness. Jorge could relate but he didn’t say anything. Instead the detective pulled himself onto his feet and stepped back, his arms crossed over his chest with a warm smile on his face as he watched the two girls talk. He had to admit that he was glad for the intervention.
Once “Maddie” had stepped away with the phone, Jorge met eyes with the British teen who looked up at began to explain.
>> “Sorry about that. She hasn’t been here long and her family was rather close. She isn’t exactly taking the move well. I mean how can you when you’re so young. I’m Kate by the way…It’s nice to see you again. It’s Jorge right?”[/color]
For a second, Jorge was simply unsure of what to say. How did this girl know him? He couldn’t recall at first where he heard the name Kate before but slowly, as he ran through his memories, he finally found it. Kate…the girl from Halloween night. He had only met her briefly, but that accent and the epic line of names that followed her first name was not hard to forget.
“Yes, it’s a pleasure to see you again, Kate. Halloween, right?” he smiled warmly. “Glad to see you got outta that mess all right. A lot of people didn’t.” Jorge shook his head at the morbid way he sounded. Quickly he shook his head and nodded back to the girl. “Thanks for the help back there. I just came in to grab some creamer and I found her upset.” he smiled then he saw an odd reflection slinking across the walls. Another glance and he found that the spheres of waters he had been manipulating were still floating about. With an apology, he flicked his wrist and gently floated the orbs over towards the sink and let them fall with a brief sound of rain hitting the basin. “Sorry about that. I was just trying to cheer her up.”
>>Yes, it’s a pleasure to see you again, Kate. Halloween, right?
“Exactly.” Kate smiled.
>>Glad to see you got outta that mess all right. A lot of people didn’t.
Kate’s smile faded at the mention, “I saw about it on the news but to tell you the truth, I don’t remember a thing from that night. Well not anything after meeting you that is. You would think I was used to big blank spots in my memory but it is still rather inconvenient,” By what Kate knew of that night she wasn’t so sure that it really was inconvenient not remembering it. So much death and destruction that Kate couldn’t help but wonder how much of it she had caused. She knew that other part of her didn’t care about human life or the things around it. All it really cared about was protecting its self and protecting its vessel. For all she knew she could have killed half of the people that died that day because they were in her way. She wasn’t too keen on knowing the truth really.
>>Thanks for the help back there. I just came in to grab some creamer and I found her upset.
“Oh of course. Maddie is just scared and lonely. I know what it’s like to be far from home and not know anyone so I spend time with her. Make her feel welcomed and wanted. It’s the least I can do to help.” Kate watched with a little bit of awe as Jorge placed the water back into the bottle. She sometimes wished she could control fire. It may have made her feel better about being able to create something so destructive if she could also stop it if needed.
>>Sorry about that. I was just trying to cheer her up.

>> “I saw about it on the news but to tell you the truth, I don’t remember a thing from that night. Well not anything after meeting you that is. You would think I was used to big blank spots in my memory but it is still rather inconvenient,”
Jorge nodded as he listened to the teen attempt to recount something, anything that happened from Halloween night. The truth was that it was a story he had heard over and over again ever since that whole madness occurred. Nobody could recall what had happened except for a select few. Gemma for example, but he was sure her powers had something to do with that. Even he himself had a hard time remembering anything except for snippets here and there, and had to trust anything that Gemma told him happened. He smiled and nodded sympathetically after she was done.
“It’s okay, you’re not the only one. The after that night, the precinct and the phonelines were filled to the brim with people who could not remember what happened.” he shrugged gently. “Sometimes, I guess ignorance is bliss. At least that is what my girlfriend keeps telling me.”
He said this with a small chuckle, but also with that same sense of understanding. It was obvious he knew where she was coming from about not remembering that night, but he truthful in what he told her. Things were probably best left to her not remembering.
>> “Really it was kind of interesting. Other then Sam, I’ve never met another elemental.”
He smirked as he finished returning the water to the bottle and flexed his fingers a little bit. He was still a little dehydrated and manipulating the water to entertain the girl had made him even more thirsty. Any longer and he might have made himself sick so it was needless to say he was thankful for Kate’s intervention.
As he reached over, he took up the bottle of water he had just filled and took a very thirsty drink before he returned his attentions to Kate.
“It’s nothing major, but I’m thankful for the ability,” he said with nod. “I’ll tell you one thing, it save my life more times than I can count.” Another drink of water and he raised a arch brow back to the teenager. “I take it that you have an element based power as well?”
And…who is this Sam? He’s overheard Gemma speak about him as well. He must be important to the mansion if pretty much everyone knows his name.
>>It’s okay, you’re not the only one. The after that night, the precinct and the phonelines were filled to the brim with people who could not remember what happened. Sometimes, I guess ignorance is bliss. At least that is what my girlfriend keeps telling me.
It was interesting to think that she wasn't the only one not to remember. There were so many times that she has woken up with spots missing and they had always come back to her in one way or another. It was an inevitability that they would. She found herself wondering if she would ever get it back seeing as so many other people didn't remember either.
>>It’s nothing major, but I’m thankful for the ability. I’ll tell you one thing, it save my life more times than I can count. I take it that you have an element based power as well?
“Yes, I’m a fire elemental. I am not so thankful.” Kate rose as the kettle whistled, “Fire isn’t exactly the most tame and easy to handle of all elements.” She pulled it off the burner and placed it on a pad on the counter, “Well I suppose they are all hard in their own ways.” She pulled out a tea pot that she had brought from home and filled it with the hot liquid, placing it on the table and then putting a cup and saucer down after it, “Would you like a quick cup?” While she waited for an answer she took out a box of Jasmine tea, placing the blossom in the first cup, “I’m sure Mrs. Taylor wouldn’t mind you indulging a lonely student.” With a final smile she waited for a response.

>> “Yes, I’m a fire elemental. I am not so thankful…Fire isn’t exactly the most tame and easy to handle of all elements…Well I suppose they are all hard in their own ways.”
“Aint’ that the truth?” he said with a genuine smile.
As a matter of fact it was true, or at least he figured so. In his experiences with the mutants, he had only run into one…maybe altogether two other elemental mutants before coming to New York. That including a man who could turn himself into a living lightning bolt and a woman turning into a walking, talking statue. Those were tough cases to handle, but it was true, they each had their own problems to deal with. The elements could be considered some of the most powerful forces on the planet and the ability for a single person who sway over any form of them could be a dangerous combination.
But that did not mean that they did not have their drawbacks as well.
Himself for example, could not control water for too long a time without getting dehydrated. This point was demonstrated right now as he sipped the water from the bottle and tried to quell the thirst that choked inside his throat. Thankfully though the sensation was beginning to wane as he took another and another sip and before he knew it h finished the entire bottle. He was a little surprised at himself but he turned his attention back to Kate
“So…a fire elemental? You’re right, I can imagine that can definitely be a hard one to tame. Fire is pretty unpredictable as it is. But I guess that means you’re in the right place.” he smiled encouragingly at her. “Seems like if there is any place that can teach out how to hone those abilities, it would be here.”
>> “Would you like a quick cup?...I’m sure Mrs. Taylor wouldn’t mind you indulging a lonely student.”
He smiled and nodded his head. “Sure, that actually sounds pretty good right now.” The detective stood back and waited as she prepared the cups of tea. As she did so his mind fluttered back to the case about Halloween. There were a few reported deaths of people who died by fire. For a second he eyed Kate but did not let his expression give away his thoughts. Instead he simply smiled and nodded his thanks when she was done pouring the tea. What were the odds that she had actually hurt anyone that night? They had to be astronomical…right? Quickly he changed the subject. “So, if you don’t mind me asking, how did you come to find yourself here?”
>>So…a fire elemental? You’re right, I can imagine that can definitely be a hard one to tame. Fire is pretty unpredictable as it is. But I guess that means you’re in the right place. Seems like if there is any place that can teach out how to hone those abilities, it would be here.
She had never really thought about it but in all truth she was learning a lot about what she could really do while she was here. Sam had grown up with a lot of the same problem and she was learning a lot about how to deal with them thanks to him.
>> “Would you like a quick cup?...I’m sure Mrs. Taylor wouldn’t mind you indulging a lonely student."
>>Sure, that actually sounds pretty good right now.
Kate put the second blossom into his cup and poured the hot water into both, “Now watch.” Kate pointed at Jorge’s cup for him to look into it. At first nothing happened, and then slowly the green blossom started to open. Each tendrils slowly detached and released a beautiful white blossom from within.
“It’s beautiful isn’t it? I love watching it bloom in the water.” Kate picked up her tea and started sipping it with the blossom still inside.
>>So, if you don’t mind me asking, how did you come to find yourself here?
“At the school? My mother sent me here to try and have a normal life. I sometimes wish she had thought to do this when I wasn’t almost 18 but I can only make the best of what I’ve been given.” Kate smiled at Jorge and thought about what her life would have been like if she had come to this school when she was 12 and her powers first manifested. The prefect face of Marie flashed into her head and she quickly pushed it down and focused back on the moment she was in now.

>> “Now watch…It’s beautiful isn’t it? I love watching it bloom in the water.”
In all honesty Jorge had first expected that Kate was going to pour him a regular cup of tea from a regular seeped bag as he was used to. But as he watched to demonstration, he had to admit that he was pretty impressed. He had never had this type of Jasmine tea before and his appreciation of its beauty and fragileness showed on his face as he watched the warm water open the jasmine blossom, thus flavoring the warm water that surrounded it. He nodded with a smile as he picked up the small cup and watched the flower bob back and forth on top of the liquid inside.
“To our good health,” he mumbled as he put the cup to his lips and sipped a little.
It was warm but definitely refreshing. It was good tea and one that he would try to keep an eye out for from now on. Another sip and he watched Kate a she responded to his question about how she found herself here at this mansion.
>> “At the school? My mother sent me here to try and have a normal life. I sometimes wish she had thought to do this when I wasn’t almost 18 but I can only make the best of what I’ve been given.”
He watched her face and knew that this was going to be touchy territory. That was the thing with being a mutant. Your abilities manifest and before you know it, your life is completely flipped upside down all because someone upset you, you got emotional, or some other reason you really cannot believe triggered it. Jorge knew that he felt like that from time to time when it came to the subject of his abilities manifesting. He thought had always thought that after all these years it would get easier and in a way it has…but memories still have the power to hurt. That will never change.
With another nod and another silent sip, he gave Kate a small, smile of understanding.
“Yeah, we always have to deal with the cards the higher powers have given us,” he said with a sigh. “Tell you one thing, you may wish you got here earlier but at least you got here and you know these people are here to help you.” he replied with a smile. “I’ve seen too many who don’t understand that. Most of them end up in handcuffs. Or they don’t learn to control things in time.”
His expression went blank momentarily as he was thrusts back to that lonely beach on the other side of the country in Southern California. All his senses became bombarded with that memory: the sound of the roaring waters, the sparkling of the high walls of ocean, the feel of the formerly wet squishy beach sand beneath his feet, the sight of a drowned young girl, the cry of a fifteen year old boy….then blackness.
Pulled back to reality, he gave Kate another smile as he continued to sip his tea.
>>Yeah, we always have to deal with the cards the higher powers have given us. Tell you one thing, you may wish you got here earlier but at least you got here and you know these people are here to help you. I’ve seen too many who don’t understand that. Most of them end up in handcuffs. Or they don’t learn to control things in time.
Kate watched Jorge’s expression go blank and then he gave a rather unconvincing smile her way. She didn’t feel it appropriate to ask the older man about what had happened and chose to just continue the conversation as if nothing had, “I don’t think I would have ended up in handcuffs. I mean it’s hard to when you can’t leave the grounds to get in trouble. I am just saying that it would have been nice to have known something of the world really. I feel like a grand idiot most of the time. Someone my age should know how to live on their own and I don’t.”
Sometimes Kate really did feel like her mother had taken opportunity away from her by doing what she did. Yes Kate loved her mother and understood it all but that didn’t change the facts. Kate had one good friend in the world and a bunch of little ones. She had scared off one of them only a week earlier and hadn’t talked to him since. She had told him so much about herself that it worried her a little too thing that they weren’t talking.
Kate continued to sip her tea and pushed the thought of Andrew out of her head once more.

I am just saying that it would have been nice to have known something of the world really. I feel like a grand idiot most of the time. Someone my age should know how to live on their own and I don’t.”
Jorge smirked and nodded as he took a sip of tea. He had not known the kind of home life that Kate had but based upon what she just described to him, he indeed was curious. He wondered what she meant when she said she was not allowed to leave the grounds. Was she in some institute before? Hospitalized? Maybe she just came from money and had a strict upbringing? He did not know for sure but he was curious to say the least. But that was not a matter for him to pry in if she did not want to reveal it.
“Well, you seem like a good egg,” he said with a smile. “I doubt that you would’ve gotten into a lot of trouble. Least of all being arrested by me.”
That was a comment that Jorge wished he could have said to more of kids. The trouble is that so many kids falls through the cracks, get forgotten or are simply not cared for. If no one is around to tell them right from wrong, how can they be expected to learn? Those were the types that he mainly had to deal with. The social rejects, the kids who know no life other than crime and causing problems. Back in Miami it was nearly all he saw while on the job. It was an unfortunate, hidden truth about society these days. Too many kids being forgotten.
Kate, on the other hand, did not seem like this type of person. She seemed to have a sweet and genuine personality. He hoped that it was true.
“Don’t worry kid. You’ll get the living on your own thing down pat before you know it.” he smiled a fatherly and friendly way. “Life is a surprisingly easy thing to learn how to do. It’s sticking with it that’s hard.” he winked as he took another sip from his tea. “But you keep making tea like this…you can do anything.”
>>Well, you seem like a good egg. I doubt that you would’ve gotten into a lot of trouble. Least of all being arrested by me.
"Thank you." In all truth Kate hadn't had much experience with the bad eggs. She had lived a very sheltered life and would be the first to admit it. She hadn't known anything beyond being polite and lady like. Her mother had raised her to be a perfect lady even if no one else ever got to see it.
>>Don’t worry kid. You’ll get the living on your own thing down pat before you know it. Life is a surprisingly easy thing to learn how to do. It’s sticking with it that’s hard. But you keep making tea like this…you can do anything.
"I drink a lot of tea and because of that I have a rather extensive collection. You get tired of drinking the same thing over and over again. Tea is one of the few things I can drink the way it is supposed to be served. I know a lot has to do with preference but some things are supposed to be served cold and the like. My heath doesn't' permit me such a luxury. Tea is hot and for me hot is good." Kate sipped her tea and looked at Jorge. She knew nothing about this man but it seemed to her that he had lived a lot of life and had seen a lot of things in that life.

Jorge was a little surprised by that last statement but then again, should he really have? She was a fire elemental and he could only imagine that their bodies must have run hotter. He did not know the specificities of Kate’s condition or what her abilities do to her own body but if hot drinks were all she really could have, he had to admit there were worst drinks out there. Tea seemed like it would be absolutely perfect for her condition.
He nodded as he listened to her, finding someone he could almost relate to when it came to mutations and the limits they can put on the body.
“Oddly enough I understand where you are coming from. Because of my mutation I need to drink a large amount of water, as you saw.” he said a little encouragingly. “And most of the time it has to be pure water. The more chemicals in like soda or juice, it doesn’t always help. So I always keep a case of water in my car for emergencies. Wouldn’t believe how that’s saved my life. This one time, I had to keep this cyborg mutant from running off with a hostage so I had form this…” he made the shape of a sphere with his hands, “…globe of water around her head. Was a strain to keep it going but I managed to run her off. Unfortunately I nearly passed out from the ordeal. Good thing I had some water bottles in my car.”
The situation was mentioned very casually but the occurrence was anything but. Jorge still had issues with trying to make amends for what happened that night. An officer died at the hands of that mutant. Yes he was a bigot but that did not give her the right to kill him. He should have been dealt with by an honest and true court of law, not some mutant vigilante. That made them all look bad.
He sighed as he took another sip of the tea and then glanced back over to the creamer which he left on the counter. “Well, it’s been fun, Ms. Kate. But I have a caffeine deprived girlfriend waiting for me,” he said with a smile and picked up the container of creamer. “Thank you so much for the tea and the assist back there. If you ever see me around, don’t be afraid to say hi.”

Kate listened intently. It was nice to know that other people at the same problems at her. As he talked she was reminded of how she would sleep for days sometimes when they would push her powers to the limit in the name of research back home. She had learned a lot about what she could do and how far she could take it back then and was very grateful for it.

“It was really no problem and tell Mrs. Taylor I said hello and would like to stop in to speak with her later.” Kate smiled and watched Jorge leave before going back to making herself the food that she had come down here to get.
