The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Her name was Gemma Taylor, but absolutely everyone he had asked about her called her Mama T. It really made the Mansion environment feel very family like when they had staff called after relative titles like 'Granny' or 'Mama' instead of 'Mrs' or 'Doctor' and it was no wonder, since many of the mutants in the mansion had gone through rocky relationships with their own families and it made sense they'd cling deeply to the surrogate ones.
Kealey and Granny had said as much regarding mutants having family issues and Miles situation was not unique in the least. In fact, he actually felt his problems were small compared to some (Kealey's parents had actually died in an explosion in Ireland) but the way he had suddenly extricated himself and cut every contact with his parents still hurt him. Kealey had suggested a visit to Mama T, the mansion's counselor, and it made perfect sense for him to do so.
He'd brought both of his dogs with him this time, even 'beautiful' Astor, like Kealey had called him, but ordered them to stay outside by the door to Mama T's office. He checked his watch to make sure he was in time for his appointment and in fact, he was five minutes late. Miles knocked on her door with one knuckle, hoping he wasn't interrupting anything and waited for a cue to be let in.

"... I need to go. Yeah. One of the kids just showed up for his appointment. Yes. All right, I'll call you later. Bye."
The phone went mute with a click, and Gemma stood to walk to the door. It was unlocked, but she still prefered to open if for guests, especially if they were visiting her for the first time. It made them feel more comfortable.
"Hey. Miles, right?" she smiled at the boy in the doorway "Come on in."
The young mutant was followed by two dogs. That was not uncommon, having dogs, cats and other creatures around; some of them were Calley, some of them were pets, and then some of them were something more than that.
Gemma closed the door and offered a hand to Miles.
"Nice to meet you. I am sure you have heard this before, but welcome to the Mansion."
This was unexpected. The woman was TALL. Like, a whole foot taller than him and fit, like an older Serena williams or something. She was, however, very welcoming, she already knew his name and offered him her hand, which he shook in courteous fashion as she closed the door behind him. The dogs followed their master, then flopped suddenly on the floor.
That was odd. He hadn't even commanded them to do that but once in a while they acted on their own.
"Thank you ma'am. It's very nice to meet you" he said. Mama Haxton had raised a polite son and whenever the opportunity arose, he was conscious to show it, specially with his elders. "I'm very glad you could see me and I'm hoping not to take too much of your time."
As he waited to be offered a seat, he felt something was amiss. He instinctively brought his hands up, but both were obviously still there and yet, why did he feel... incomplete? Like something he could feel before was no longer there?
Unknown to him yet, the red glow from his dog's eyes was no longer there.

>>"Thank you ma'am. It's very nice to meet you. I'm very glad you could see me and I'm hoping not to take too much of your time."
"You can take all the time you need" Gemma smiled, taking a seat too. The dogs lay down; they well very well behaved. She was glad for that, the last time she had a four-legged creature in her office it ended up creating quite a mess.
"Before we begin, fair warning. You might or might not already know this, but I am what they call an adapted: I have an aura that cancels out mutant powers. This makes some people uncomfortable, depending on what their abilities are, so if you are not okay with being within my range, please tell me. It's okay."
Miles took a seat as she told him he had all the time he needed to work on his issues which he found reassuring, but then she followed that with a warning. Adapted? That's the first time he had heard of such a thing and he even found it hard to believe. Did mutations have some kind of on and off switch she could flip at will? She had no reason to lie to him though, so he took her word for it, besides, he thought of his mutation as a curse and having it turned off for a few hours would be a blessing. Then again, unless someone actually died and he felt all conflicted and weepy about it, he didn't foresee his mutant abilities suddenly going off at any mom...
His train of thought derailed. His dogs remained lying on the ground by the door, lifeless... well, more lifeless than usual. This was so not like them, they usually stood still and shined their red eyes over OH MY GOD!
Miles looked befuddled at Mama T and then back at his dogs.
"My dogs... they... is this what you mean by that?... I..."
The boy didn't wait for explanations. He stood up from the chair and ran back at his canines, calling their names. "Astor! Tinaker! What...?"
The moment he put some distance between himself and Mama T however, the dogs eyes lit up again, like computers getting restarted. They stood then sat down like nothing had happened, waiting for orders. Miles checked on them, realizing that her counselor could indeed shut off his powers when near him and his dogs were tied to him in ways he could not explain yet. The moment he returned back to his seat near Mama T, the dogs eyes blacked out and they flopped to the ground once more.
He stared into the woman's dark eyes.
"That's all kinds of awesome... AND creepy at the same time."

The boy looked confused at first, but things cleared up fast as he looked at his dogs.
>>"My dogs... they... is this what you mean by that?... I... Astor! Tinaker! What...?"
His powers, whatever they were exactly, kicked in as he walked away from her aura. Gemma watched quietly, allowing him to make sure everything was right, and figure things out on his own.
>>"That's all kinds of awesome... AND creepy at the same time."
"That about sums it up" she chuckled "The effects are only temporary, and you are back to normal once you are outside my aura. You have seen it for yourself, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask."
Questions? Miles had tons of questions. When did she find out she was an adapted? What did her family think about it? Could a mutant who needed his powers to survive actually die when near her? Can I clutch to your leg and stay there forever? Why is the sky blue?
No.
Miles knew himself. He was evasive by nature and disliked talking about his personal problems but this time was different. He needed help. He needed counsel and he wasn't going to waste her time beating the bushes just to see if he could trust her. Kealey had recommended her and he already trusted Kealey, besides, she was an official badge carrying counselor and he probably was under the doctor-patient confidentiality clause. He could tell her anything. Pretty much... anything! There was no danger of him going into dark mode when she was around, so even if he lost control of his emotions... absolutely nothing would come of it. This gave him a sense of relief he hadn't felt in a long time.
"I can't" he said flat out to her 'ask me anything' offer. "Maybe later, because if you give me leeway right now I will hold to that like a dog to bone and won't let go till we grow old and we still won't be anywhere near the point. I'm just like that. I don't like talking about my issues and I'll take any opportunity not to do so, except... I have to. There's stuff that's been bugging me that I want to get off my chest and... I don't know how."
Miles paused and sighed. He brought his hands up and gestured trying to come up with the right words but deep down he just didn't want to get into detail or reveal too much, so he kept his question as vague as possible.
"How do you deal with guilt? The kind that doesn't let you sleep well at night sometimes?"

Gemma nodded as the boy rambled on. He obviously had a very good reason for coming to see her (most students didn't unless they did), and she gave him time to gather his words, thoughts, and courage.
>>"How do you deal with guilt? The kind that doesn't let you sleep well at night sometimes?"
There it was. He askedfor advice. And help. That was the first step everyone needed to take for himself. From this, Gemma could take it.
"Well, in my experience" she said with a friendly smile to make him comfortable, but not make him think she was taking the matter lightly "Talking about it to someone is usually a good first step."
The moment she mentioned talking about it to someone, his stomach twisted a bit; which was a natural reaction to the concept of opening up to his problems, but come on! He was here, this is what he'd come for, he'd done it with Kealey and she was nothing but supportive, so what are you waiting for, Miles!? COME OOOON!
The boy twiddled his thumbs, staring at his own hands. He might as well start from the beginning or she wouldn't know where he's coming from.
"I'm the eldest son in a small family" he stated. "My dad is in insurance, my mom is an events organizer working freelance and my sister is ten years old. I'm not a grade A student but I'm good at what I like. I murder english when I text and I think history is a waste of time because really, why on earth do we need to know all those useless factoids about..."
Maybe too much from the beginning. And focus, Miles...
"... never mind, the point is... there was a lot of hope riding on me. I like medicine and was thinking of becoming a doctor and the day I told my dad about it, he was ecstatic. He'd been saving on a college fund and all that, he even called me 'Dr. Haxton' from time to time and then..."
Miles paused. He then just jerked his head towards his dogs "...that happened."
He had stopped twiddling his thumbs by now and was simply looking at his own hands. His voice came out as a mumble.
"I crushed his hopes. I crushed his hopes into dust."

Gemma was starting to see what Miles meant by going off on tangents to avoid a topic. Still, exactly because he admitted to it himself, she allowed him to go on and gather some courage to hit the actual point whenever he was ready to. She did not lie when she said she had time.
>>"... never mind, the point is... there was a lot of hope riding on me. I like medicine and was thinking of becoming a doctor and the day I told my dad about it, he was ecstatic. He'd been saving on a college fund and all that, he even called me 'Dr. Haxton' from time to time and then...that happened."
She followed his glance towards the dogs that were now lying on the ground once again. she knew he meant his mutation. She wondered how exactly it worked with the dogs and all; she had a general description is his files, but not many details.
>>"I crushed his hopes. I crushed his hopes into dust."
Gemma nodded slowly, letting him know she understood what he meant by that.
"Miles, would you like to tell me what happened when your powers kicked in?"
It was a conscious word choice; it always had been. She called it powers, or ability, words that meant strength and natural skill, not something abnormal or awful. It was like that with many other things that made people different from the crowd; word choice was half the battle.
Mrs. Taylor's last question made Miles look up at the ceiling, as if trying to remember or find the answer somehow written in it. It had a nice finish and the lamp was fancy, not like the ones his parents had at home with...
Stop that.
He had already told Kealey the gist of it, but he had been sparse on the details. Docprof knew his dogs weren't exactly alive and that they were totally under his control, but how it happened? He hadn't told anyone. His own father saw him turn Tinaker into a thrall but that was the second time he had used his 'power'. Heh, at least she hadn't called them a 'gift' like others had.
The first time had been the worst.
Miles lowered his gaze again, sighed, shrugged his shoulders and no word came out of his lips. It actually took a moment for him to find his voice.
"Astor died. And I refused to let him die. That's what I do. You can't die under my watch."
Way to generalize, Miles. The boy turned his gaze at his dogs, who seemed just as lifeless as the first time he had reached out to them with his black touch. They looked so peaceful.
"I don't know for sure how it happens or why, but I have my money on it being emotional. The day Astor, my big dog there..." he said, pointing at the 'sleeping' boxer so she could know which was which "... the day he died, it was from old age. He was old and sick. He had lived a happy dog's life, he had fulfilled his mission on earth. He had been my best friend, always loyal, always there, always willing to play and protect me. He deserved to be let go. He deserved his peace, he had earned it..."
By this time, Miles had brought a hand to his mouth, squeezing it tightly, a sign of regret and remorse.
"... but I refused. He was so beautiful when he was alive and look what I turned him into. A thrall. Always obedient. Never himself. A slave, forever under my control."
The boy once again lowered his gaze. "The worst part is... this could happen again. I can't control it and I could do this again... to anyone."

>>"Astor died. And I refused to let him die. That's what I do. You can't die under my watch."
It came out, just like that. Gemma had been wondering about the exact nature of Miles' powers; the effect of her aura was some indication, but she did not like jumping into conclusion before the story had time to unfold.
>>"I don't know for sure how it happens or why, but I have my money on it being emotional. The day Astor, my big dog there... the day he died, it was from old age. He was old and sick. He had lived a happy dog's life, he had fulfilled his mission on earth. He had been my best friend, always loyal, always there, always willing to play and protect me. He deserved to be let go. He deserved his peace, he had earned it..."
Gemma's gaze moved to the dogs and then back to the boy. He was struggling to get the words out, putting them together in some kind of order while he was still dealing with the emotions that came with them.
>>"... but I refused. He was so beautiful when he was alive and look what I turned him into. A thrall. Always obedient. Never himself. A slave, forever under my control. The worst part is... this could happen again. I can't control it and I could do this again... to anyone."
There it was. The guilt. The truth about the powers, and the emotions a boy Miles' age should not have to deal with. Then again, life as a mutant was hardly ever fair. Gemma put a hand on the boy's arm and looked at him.
"That... is entirely possible."
It sounded harsh, the words themselves, even if she said them in a calm tone. But she believed in facing the truth, and seeing it as it was.
"However. You are very young, and your powers have just manifested. That means two things, and I am sure you know this: one, you have no complete control over them yet. That is why we have this school, to help you change that. Two: mutant powers, nine times out of ten, evolve with time. That might make them easier to manage, or completely different. We can't really know. But one thing we do know: you are in the best place on the planet for dealing with anything that happens to you. It is safe, it is prepared, and there is very little we have not seen before."
She smiled a bit and gave his arm a gentle squeeze.
"With that speech done" she said, sitting back "It is completely okay to feel the way you feel. God knows I would feel the same."
Mrs. Taylor's touch felt warm and comforting as did her voice, but her words were blunt and to the point. Where he expected some reassurances 'Don't worry, we won't let it happen!' style, he got a bucketful of truth instead. They really couldn't stop it from happening and this was a responsibility he would have to carry for the rest of his life. Her next words did sound more hopeful though and not the sort of hope that comes from blind faith, but the sort that comes from experience.
The mansion was indeed the sort of place that could help him deal with his mutation and it's consequences. To think his father and grandfather were looking for a hospital when they brought him to New York, like he was sick instead of... evolved.
She said she'd feel the same way in his shoes. That's the sort of understanding he wanted to have from his old man, but no, Mr. Haxton did not understand. He wanted to see Miles' dogs dead. He wanted his son to be normal again, to get rid of his mutation, to 'fix' him... never to accept him as he now was. Ever since he ran away from them both, he hadn't had the nerve to contact his parents again.
"It's not easy" he admitted to her, regarding how he felt. "I try to ignore it and to lead a normal life but I know it'll never be normal. They always remind me of that, of what I can do and of what can happen if I don't keep my cool" he said as he gestured at his dogs.
"I wish my father was supportive and thought the way you do. He tried to be helpful but... he didn't know much about mutation and it didn't work out that well" he said, sugarcoating it as much as he could, but his face was starting to reveal a hint of frustration just by remembering the whole incident. "Parents sometimes think they have everything figured out even when they're clueless."
Out of the blue, Miles asked the counselor a personal question.

>>"It's not easy. I try to ignore it and to lead a normal life but I know it'll never be normal. They always remind me of that, of what I can do and of what can happen if I don't keep my cool"
"As long as you remember that, you are doing fine" Gemma nodded. She knew those feelings, not from first hand experiece, but from the hundreds of kids she had worked with in the past years.
>>"I wish my father was supportive and thought the way you do. He tried to be helpful but... he didn't know much about mutation and it didn't work out that well. Parents sometimes think they have everything figured out even when they're clueless... Do you have kids of your own, Mrs. Taylor?"
The boy was right about parents in general. Gemma had seen that before too. Especially with the ones that brought a burning angel to the Mansion...
"Yes" she nodded with a small smile "My two older kids are in college, and they are human, as far as I know. You might know my youngest, he is in the school too, his name is Chase."
"Can't say I've had the pleasure" Miles responded regarding Chase. Most of the students at school had family problems just like he did and actually lived in the dorm section of the school, but he had settled in Sanctuary instead and traveled every day to classes, so most of his free time was spent at Sanctuary or in New York instead of the walls within the mansion. This made his acquaintances limited to whatever he could manage during school hours or breaks.
His question had a purpose though and was not the fruit of his usual evasion tactics at work. Miles fidgeted a little as he tried to make his line of inquiries as hypothetical as possible but made no attempt to pretend he wasn't talking about himself.
"So, as a parent... how would you react if a son actually ran away from you? Say, he's doing all right with you and then one day you both have a big argument and then... he runs off. No calls. No e-mails. He just... takes off. Would you be mad at him?"
