A little blonde sat cross legged on the floor of a dark steel room. A fox kit lay resting in her lap, not a whisker twitching, though he wasn't asleep. In the room above them, the computer hummed, waiting for a command. It felt weird to talk to a computer, but Katrina tried it anyway.
“Computer, observation mode. Please.” Was one supposed to be polite to a machine? She shook her head at herself, this was just like the holodeck on Star Trek, except it was real. At least, it was as real as holograms could be.
“I'd like to see examples of fire manipulators' attacks, please.” The little illusionist was startled when, without even a telltale beep or anything, a young red head with spiky hair appeared in front of her. His angry eyes twitched at the corners and his hair burst into flames that soon engulfed his body.
“Slow motion replay, please.” Katrina noted the eye twitch. That was the telegraphing Sam had spoken of at one of her self defense lessons. She noted the shape of the flame. She noted the color. The relative transparency. The random movement.
Then she tired it herself. A little ball of orange light appeared in front of her, it's edges like shifty spikes. Almost, but not quite.
“It's not as easy as it looks,” she commented to the fox kit.
She adjusted the color, made the spikes more fluid and random, added another layer of spikes. Better. Next would come heat and more light. She stirred and poked at it until it looked right.
In front of her, while she worked, the computer continued to play through reels of three-dimensional video. Example after example played with different fire manipulators until finally the computer ran out of pre-programmed examples for her to view.
“That's it?” There weren't as many as she had expected. Then again, she had been working rather a long time. She tossed a fireball, minus the heat, from one hand to the other. It had been a rather productive day.
“C'mon 'Hawk, let's go get some ice cream. My mom bought caramel swirled stuff last time she went grocery shopping.”
